This is How Your Brain Suffers Without Vitamins

One of the significant ways in which vitamin deficiency affects the body is by impacting the cognitive function of the brain. Dementia and impaired memory can stem from improper nutrition.

Vitamin deficiency is not common among older adults in the U.S. With access to virtually any food we want, this is natural. Yet, we do naturally decline as we grow older, and that has to do with nutrients. Most often these are a declining cognitive function (e.g. memory), impaired ability to fight infections (i.e. weakened immune system), and hip fractures and falls (due to weak bones).

Here I’d like to show you the latest findings from the very best studies about how vitamin and mineral supplements can impact memory. The following two articles in my series will then look at the immune system and weak bones angles.

Dementia, in older adults, is unfortunately common. It’s estimated that about 4.5 million people in the U.S. have it, with many others suffering a milder form of cognitive impairment. Dementia’s cause is unknown. One popular theory is that high blood levels of homocysteine (a dangerous amino acid) are linked not only with heart disease, but also with dementia. Since high blood levels of homocysteine are easily lowered by folic acid and vitamin B12, there are many high-quality studies out there that have proved it. Here are some:

— 1992: 76 patients in their 70s. None had impaired memory. Vitamin B6, at 20 mg, improved their ability to store information.

— 2000: 1,430 patients over 65.

They suffered dementia. Vitamin B12 improved language function, thus their ability to communicate improved.

— 2003: 149 patients over 65. They had dementia or cognitive impairment. Folic acid (2 mg) and vitamin B12 (one mg) lowered homocysteine levels in the blood by 30%.

— 2005: 209 patients, average age 65. Found the same result as above with lower doses of the vitamins, as well as three mg of vitamin B6.

— 2006: 276 patients over 65. All three vitamins once again lowered homocysteine levels considerably.

Though these studies are great, they didn’t fully prove that the B-vitamins could improve people’s memory. They simply reduce levels of a harmful substance that deteriorates the memory. So it can be said that these supplements preserve memory. We’re about to learn more about this though, as in the next little while we will see the results of up to seven years of supplements on tens of thousands of people. Stay tuned.

Brain Foods : Brain Food: How The Food We Buy May Be Impacting The Long Term Health Of Our Brains

When we do our grocery shopping we may not be thinking in terms of brain food, but what we buy does play a part in the health of our minds. We sometimes buy things in terms of the health of our hearts, but we may need to make a few changes if we want our minds to go the distance as we age.

Americans still seem to persist in buying high fat foods even though we are aware of the risks to our arteries and heart. However, just as in the case of heart healthy foods, food for the brain requires a reduction in the “bad fat” content of our diets. Clogged arteries not only impact the heart they hind the mind.

The brain is the largest user of oxygen of all the different organs so any change in blood flow to the brain quickly effects its ability to function. Reducing fats is important in keeping those arteries free. In fact, researchers have noted that reduced blood flow is a contributing factor in cognitive decline in older people. Protecting your blood supply to the brain is critical in keeping function longer as you age.

Brain food also needs to be high in vitamins and minerals. While this is good for the body in general, the brain in particular is susceptible to deficiencies in nutrients. Many of the chemicals in the brain, neurotransmitters, etc. depend on a steady supply of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Since these nutrients come largely through fruits and vegetables most people do not get all that they need. The typical american eats nowhere near the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables that they need. The flip side of this problem is that even if they did, our modern processing of foods as well as some of the way we farm them tends to strip away rather than help retain these nutrients.

Antioxidants are another item that is important for the brain. Again, finding food for the brain that provides the right levels of antioxidants is hard. It comes back to the lack of fruits and vegetables in our diet as well as the previously mentioned depletion of these nutrients in the foods themselves.

Antioxidants are foundational in helping to protect the mind from aging. Scientists are learning that the damage caused by free radicals is a big factor in some of the age related decline we see in older people. It also may play a role in the damage to brain cells that leads to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals before they can damage cells. Good food for the brain must include a healthy dose of antioxidants.

So what do we do to get good brain food since we know that most people don’t buy what they should and when they do it is still short on nutrients? What steps can we take to ensure the health of our brains as we age?

First, we still need to do our part to cut fats and increase the fruits and vegetables we eat. Regardless of whether or not they have decreased nutrient content, eating more of them is still better for us then not having them at all.

Second, finding good fruits and vegetables for brain food may require thinking outside the box a bit. Instead of buying from chain stores who get their produce from commercial farms that use the kind of heavy processing which strips nutrients, buy from smaller local farms or farmers markets. They may be a bit more expensive at times, but the quality could be substantially better.

Third, it may be necessary to add supplements to the diet that help fill in the gaps. There are many good combination supplements out there that provide a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This is a fairly easy and effective way to make up for some of the lack of nutrients we have in our food. Make sure you find a manufacturer that has a reputation for quality and uses safe, pure ingredients.

While we may not always do our best to eat appropriate brain food, we can take steps to improve the level of nutrients we get daily. Since medicine is helping people live longer, it is more important than ever that we do what we can to help our minds keep up. Nobody wants to live to be 90 only to have their minds degrade to a miserable level. We can do something about that by giving our brain what it needs. All it takes is a few changes to what we buy and eat as well as a little commitment to stick with those changes. The end result will be worth it.

Storing Memories: Preserving Photographs

My first camera was a Kodak X-15 Instamatic. A birthday gift from my Grandfather, it used rotating flash cubes. I captured my first images with that simple camera. Sometime later I moved up to a Kodak 110. It had a simple slide and click telephoto lens. It used flash cubes, too, but I upgraded to a battery powered strobe and thought I was quite the sophisticated photographer.

It’s nostalgic to look back on those old photos. There are faces I know. Family members and friends. And there are faces that I have no name for. These pictures have faded over the years. The vivid colors they possessed when I opened the envelope from the film lab have diminished. Faded though they are, they’re part of my life story.

So are there any tricks to preserving these memories?

Let’s start with the old photographs you have. If you have any of them in a magnetic photo book, set them free at once. Magnetic photo books have cardboard pages that contain acid, as does the adhesive on the page. Over the years it will eat away at your photos.

The plastic covers on these types of pages usually contain polyvinyl chloride. While you’ll never notice it happening, this plastic (sort of like my old uncle) releases a gas that will fade your photos and distort the images over time. Claire Maxwell, President of the Taylor Conservation and Heritage Society, is an expert in photo preservation. She says, “Put those three things together and it’s like a pressure cooker for a photograph.”

If you have photos in magnetic albums, get them out. If they’ve been in there a long time be careful as the pictures may be stuck to the page.

Use a thin metal blade to gently lift one edge of the picture, systematically lifting up. Do not grab an edge and pull because you may unintentionally separate the image from the photo paper.

If you must use sleeves to store your pictures, use PVC free and acid free plastic sleeves from your local camera store. Otherwise, a simple box made from acid free material will more than suffice.

If you were going to “store” yourself, where would you put yourself? Would it be in a brightly lit, hot, damp place? Hardly.

Photographs, like medicine, coffee and many foods should be stored in a cool, dry and dark place. Prolonged exposure to light is one of the biggest dangers to photographs.

As a kid, I would go with my Dad to Minnesota Twins games. At one of them my Dad bought for me four flannel pennants that had photos of Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Rod Carew and Cesar Tovar. For some reason the first three got pinned up on the wall by the window in my room. Cesar was kept neatly in a drawer. Over 40 years later I still have the pennants. Harmon, Tony and Rod have poorly aged. Cesar looks sharp, vivid and young. For people and pictures, too much sun really isn’t the best way to go.

As you store your photos, take time to write down the “who, what, when, and where” of the picture. Everyone who looks at old photos laments when this information is missing. You’ll tell yourself, “I’ll remember who they are.” But 30 years later, if it takes that long, you won’t.

When you do write on the back of the photo, don’t use just any pen. Make the investment in some archival markers. You can buy them at photo shops, scrapbook shops and hobby stores. They are inexpensive, come in a variety of colors and tip widths and use acid free ink that won’t bleed through the paper to the image on the front.
