Photographic Memory : High School Yearbook Photos

Article by Addyie Weeks

The last four years of your child’s academic journey is documented in photographic memories in high school yearbooks. The senior year is the often the most important of all. Generally, your high school student won’t have control over the photo that appears in their yearbook, but you do have a choice about the ones taken to include in their graduation announcements.

Every year, the school hires a photographer to come to the school and snap a few shots of your senior in their cap and gown. If you are lucky, you get to choose which of these photos will appear in their yearbook. But today, more and more schools are allowing students to submit their own senior photos taken by a photographer of their choice.

Regardless of whether the photo that appears in the yearbook is from the school’s photographer, or one of your own choosing, you should consider having a professional photographer take your child’s senior photos. A professional photographer will meet with you and your child and take your child’s interests into consideration when setting up a photo shoot.

A professional photo shoot for a senior will usually run around two hours. You will often find that your child can make up to six wardrobe changes during this photo shoot. From casual attire in a casual setting, to elegant dress in a more classic setting, you photo shoot will provide a wide selection of choices for senior photos.

If you have a child that is involved in athletics, you will most likely wish to have some photos that capture your student in their uniform. A professional photographer often utilizes an outdoor setting that will provide a great background for these athletic type shots. My son played baseball and his photographer met him at a baseball diamond and began his photo shoot there before moving back to the studio.

You will also want shots of your senior in their school’s cap and gown. A professional photographer usually has a variety of backgrounds that will help your child’s image stand out bringing the focus on their scholastic attire. Local photographers will also sometimes have backgrounds that display the high school name, or the name of the school can be photo shopped in afterwards.

Despite your child’s objections, you will probably want some shots in their “Sunday best.” These classic photos can be taken indoors, or outdoors, in an elegant setting. But don’t forget that your child is also their own individual. Allow the photographer to capture your child in some of their everyday attire, because that allows your child to express their own individuality.

If you are worried about your senior’s photos and how they will appear in the high school yearbooks, don’t hesitate to contact and administrator or speak with the instructor in charge of yearbook production. It certainly can’t hurt if you ask for permission to submit a photo of your own choosing.

Short Term Memory : Using Memory to Improve Grades in School

Article by Andre Thunestvedt

Just how huge is memory function in our lives? It’s more than those everyday memory challenges, like remembering your license plate number when you’re getting your tire changed. It’s more than remembering the right date for basketball tryouts. And it’s even way more than remembering your girlfriend’s telephone number.

It’s your grade point average, your GPA. The reason memory function is huge is the way it effects your grades in school. Why? Both long term and short term memory skills play into academic success. Knowing how they work will help you store information and recall it when you need it. That adds up to study methods that boost your grades.

Those grades will pave your way through life…whether it’s a smooth road or a bumpy one. Are you planning to go to college? Your GPA will determine if you get there, and what school you can enter. After college, you no doubt plan on getting a good job. Once again, your grades will determine if you make the first cut.

School grades are critical from high school to college levels. If you want to improve your grades, consider ways to improve your memory skills.

Grades and Memory: The Critical Link

Do you wonder just how improving your memory skills will create a dramatic improvement in your grades? Think about how your teacher or professor determines your grades. Yes, it’s those darn pop quizzes, examinations, and essays. All three call on your ability to dredge up memories—memories of facts, lists, dates, formulae, and names. Even your answer to an essay question is more impressive when you can sprinkle in remembered facts. And definitely those quizzes and exams ask that you recall stored information, on demand.

Storing and recalling information is what the memory is all about. So just how do you go about memorizing information?

Maybe you’re the type who holes up in the bedroom and starts reading and underlining your notes until you doze off. Or perhaps you just read the information over and over again in the hopes that your stressed-out brain will absorb it. Either way, you probably don’t consider using memory techniques. You just do the same old thing even if it doesn’t work well for you.

The sad thing is that you work very hard when you study but these methods often work against effective memory function, instead of with it. That list of 19th century American History dates just flies out the window when you sit down for the exam.

Fortunately, there are proven ways to work with your memory instead of against it. Without much trouble, you can discover some of these learning skills to improve your memory. So why not give it a try?
