When you have found a pair, remove them from the set.  This game can be modified to make your own version but you should be sure that they are really mind-practicing games such as puzzles and solving problems.

Short Term Memory : What is Short Term Memory and How Can We Enhance It Naturally?

What is short term memory? As scientists are continuing to study the brain and how it operates we are learning more each day on how the brain processes and stores memory. We are also finding out ways to give those processes a boost.

So what is short term memory? Simply put it is the memory function in the brain that most consciously holds and processes events, images, information, etc. It is a holding area of sorts for our brains to decide to either put those memories to use promptly and/or commit them to long term storage. It is both a filter and a workplace for things we are processing. Information in short term memory is most readily available for us to use and access compared to long term memory.

Trying to describe short term memory as an exact process in the brain is a bit trickier. Science is still working on the specifics of how this works and where in the brain it works, though they have made progress in both those areas.

Typically short term memory holds items for roughly a minute or so…there is some debate as to the exact duration. It has limited capacity too, being able to hold on average 5 – 9 pieces of data. This is where trying to describe short term memory capacity get fuzzy. Pieces of data can range from single numbers or letters to whole words or phrases that the brain treats as a “single” piece of data usually because it is familiar and has already been learned.

An example of this is a phone number. The number 485-553-1182 would be 10 pieces of data if each number were treated independently. However, grouping them into larger numbers works as well and reduces the number of “items” such as 48-55-53-11-82. The brain would now treat these as five items instead of 10 because the larger numbers are familiar and it knows what to do with them. So the amount of information held in short term memory is somewhat dependent on how that information is organized and if it is related to things already in long term memory.

When trying to describe short term memory enhancement most scientist talk in terms of technique. That is they look at skills a person can employ that make better use of the function. We’ve looked at one already and that is what is called “chunking”. Chunking is taking data and organizing it into larger chunks that can be treated as a single piece of data much like we did with the phone number above. This allows the memory to hold more information than it would if you tried to remember the individual components.

Another technique is by looking at what is short term memory capable of handling in terms of duration. Since the useful life of items in short term memory is seconds to a minute or so, a person must resort to repetition in order to keep an item in short term memory for a longer period of time. We already do this unconsciously on a daily basis such as repeating a phone number until we have a chance to enter it into the phone. While not a new technique, science has validated it as a way of “resetting” the clock on the memory before it expires. An additional bonus to this is that it also makes the item a more likely candidate for being entered into long term memory.

One last thing to consider when looking at what is short term memory is the physical processes behind it. Again, science is still trying to understand exactly how this works, but it is a given that it relies on nerve cells and neurotransmitters just like any other function in the brain. That may seem obvious, but it is important as this is also a factor in how we might enhance memory.

Studies are showing that since this is a natural brain process it can be affected by various substances just like the rest of the brain. I can remember memory exercises and assignments all the way back to second grade, and they always involved drudgery and tedium, like memorizing and reciting the Gettysburg address, and making faces at the kid reciting to try and make them lose their place.

I actually did that and feel some embarrassment at this moment as I remember that.

And now I am noticing that I am having issues with word recall, which tells me that my brain is now 62 years old, and my brain is earning its living recalling words and using them in counseling sessions, and I am worried that I am going to have to return to those tedious memory exercises from my childhood to keep my professional vocabulary.

However, I do hear the cavalry trumpet sounding not too far away, and I do believe that I can do memory exercises which reflect recent discoveries about the human brain and recent technological developments.

So here is what I have learned. We grow new brain cells every day, which is called neurogenesis, and those brain cells migrate to the hippocampus, which is a very important part of the memory process in the human brain, and we are making lots of discoveries about neuroplasticity, which is the capacity of neurons to form new connections when they are presented with novel learning experiences, sometimes within minutes of the learning experience.

Neurogenesis is a new discovery, perhaps a decade old.

The good news is that both neurogenesis and neuroplasticity can be encouraged, which impacts memory, and influences memory exercises, by taking care of the pillars of brain fitness.

The Pillars of Brain Fitness?

It turns out that the best memory exercise that we can do is what Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. tell us to do in their wonderful e-book Brainfit for Life.

We need to commit regular time to our brain fitness, which means that we take care of what the experts in the brain and memory exercise fields are calling the pillars of brain fitness.

Physical activity/exercise, nutrition including lots of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids, stress management, good sleep, which is the time of day when memory consolidation happens, and novel learning experiences, which might include the use of the new computerized brain fitness programs.

Memory loss is a very serious complaint with many people these days. It is a term which is given to an abnormal degree of forgetfulness or an inability to be able to recall past events. It may have either a sudden or gradual onset, and it can be temporary or permanent.

There are many different causes of memory loss. Pregnancy and aging are two very common causes, but just because there are situations which cause memory loss this certainly does not mean that you have to deal with it.

There are many things that you can do to help improve your memory, but using games to improve memory is by far one of the best things that you can ever do:

* Using games to improve memory tends to be much more effective than most other methods, particularly because they are fun and enjoyable.
* This means that rather than being a task they are something that you will absorb, and this will offer you more significant results in terms of memory improvement.

What Games Are The Best?

If you are wondering what games to improve memory you should use, then you should know that there are quite a few, for example:

1. Crossword puzzles are always a great idea, and they are simple so they are suitable for people of all ages.
2. Jigsaw puzzles are also effective because they awaken and stimulate the brain, and
3. Match games are just as good.

You can even come up with your own games to improve memory, and to make it really fun you can get some of your friends and family members involved. This makes it a group activity and not only will you then have people you love around you to support you but they will be improving their memories at the same time so it is really a win-win situation.

Besides games to improve memory, there are also many other things that a person can do to help them deal with a memory loss condition. The best idea is to speak to your doctor if you are dealing with a condition such as this. They will help you to assess and diagnose your condition, as well as determine whether or not your memory loss is the sign of something more serious.

This is important because even short-term memory loss is often the sign of Alzheimer’s or a similar disease or form of dementia, and at least if you determine that there is a larger problem at hand you will be able to deal with it appropriately, as promptly as possible, therefore saving yourself from more serious, long-term damage.

Short term memory loss is a fact of life as we get older. Is there anything that can be done to help? There are some foods that have been proven to boost brainpower.

Organic Rosemary

Rosemary contains a wealth of antioxidant phytonutrients, including flavonoids and the phenolic compounds carnosol, rosmanol, and rosmarinic acid wich are great for short memory loss.Rosemary extract has shown the capacity to scavenge the peroxynitrite radical, one of the molecules responsible for causing cell death and aging. Consumption of its volatile oils, those that give it its memorable fragrance, help to enhance recall and increase alertness.

To retain nutrients, it is best to wash fresh rosemary under cold running water and pat dry with a paper towel. Do not soak it. Add fresh rosemary to omelets and frittatas. Rosemary is also a wonderful herb for seasoning chicken or lamb dishes. You can also add rosemary to tomato sauces and soups.

Organic Oranges

Oranges are great sources of folate which helps with memory loss. A recent study in The Journal of Nutrition found that a diet rich in folate - which helps lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid related to memory loss - is associate with faster recall and information processing.

Eat 2 oranges a day. Eat the orange on its own or cut in to small pieces and add to you salad!

Other great sources of folate are: Romaine lettuce, spinach, asparagus, calf’s liver, collard greens, broccoli.

Black Beans

This fiber rich food is an excellent source of vitamin B1, a nutrient that helps synthesize the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is crucial for memory. Low levels of acetylcholine have been linked to age-related mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Eat 1/2 cup a day!

Other great sources of B1: Romaine lettuce, asparagus, crimini mushrooms, spinach, sunflower seeds, tuna, green peas.

Sage

Two trials have showed that taking an essential oil extract of sage - which inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine - significantly improved recall in adults for up to 4 hours after consuming. Consume 1 tablespoon fresh or 1 teaspoon of dried sage, or 1 teaspoon sage infused olive oil. Add it soups or use sage infused oil in meat marinade.

Eating super food like the healthy food described above won’t magically bring back your short term memory loss but over time you will notice a significant difference. Remeber that organic products make a huge difference in the effectiveness of these healthy foods, so please consume organic products when ever possible.
