Boost Memory : Fruits and Vegetables That Can Boost Memory

A lot of fruits and vegetables can help improve memory. So if you are suffering from memory loss, then you should add some of these fruits and vegetables to your diet.

We usually eat 3 times a day, 7 days a week. Just imagine if you put these memory-boosting fruits and vegetables in your meals every day. Consistent digestion and absorption of these nutritious foods will really maximize your brain’s cognitive function and enhance your memory. Studies even show that people who consumed high amounts of fruits and vegetables over the years had less age-related memory loss.

Here are some fruits and vegetables that can improve your memory.

1. QUERCETIN-RICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Quercetin is a phytochemical that makes lemons yellow, apples red and onions purple. In the human digestive system, quercetin acts as a biological response modifier that boosts the immune system against infections and diseases. It has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties that protect the brain cells from oxidative stress. It is also believed that it can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Quercetin is a flavanoid that can help improve memory. It can also be found in broccoli, tomatoes, parsley, blueberries, black currants and red/purple grapes.

2. ANTHOCYANIN-RICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Anthocyanin is responsible for the dark pigmentation of eggplants and berries. Like quercetin, anthocyanin is also a potent anti-oxidant that can help boost memory since it protects the brain cells from getting damaged from free radicals that are natural byproducts of our body. Red apples, red grapes, rhubarb, red beets, red/purple cabbage, and berries are rich with anthocyanin.

3. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

Brussels, cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, collard greens, arugula and watercress are examples of cruciferous vegetables. A study conducted by Harvard researchers found out that women in a Nurses’ Health Study who ate a lot of cruciferous vegetables had performed better in their memory tests. This shows that this kind of vegetables can enhance memory to its optimum level.

4. LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES

Leafy green vegetables contain folic acid or folate. It helps protect the brain from memory loss caused by aging. Having an adequate amount of folate in our body can prevent the risk of developing cerebrovascular diseases like stroke which can lead to

dementia. Folate is also important to lessen the amount of homocysteine, an amino acid that affects nerve cells, thus, reducing development of Alzheimer’s disease. Leafy green vegetables that you should include to improve memory are mustard green, spinach, kale, collard and Swiss chard.

Incorporating just a few of these fruits and vegetables into your diet can greatly improve your cognitive function and lead to a happier, healthier memory.

Memory Exercises : Combine Memory Exercises With Juicing Fruits and Vegetable For Your Memory

The most common cause of memory failure is aging; but while we can’t stop ourselves from getting old, we could still do a lot to improve brain functions and restore our memory – through memory exercises and nutrition.

Just as it is important for our bodies to exercise, our brain too needs to exercise. A great way to exercise our brain is to use it often. Just as an old unused knife becomes dull and rusty, our brains also become “dull and rusty” if you don’t exercise it and use often.

The number one way to use and exercise our brain is through reading. Through reading we are able to improve our brain’s capacity for comprehending and analyzing. As part of your daily memory exercises, try reading the newspaper every day. If you read the newspaper daily, you will be able to recall the news and events yesterday and be able to connect it to the news and events you’re reading today.

There are also more complex but effective memory exercises like mnemonics and use of peg words. Try this exercise, it is one of the most common memory exercises to improve your memory. It’s difficult and takes some time to apply at first, but in the long run you will get used to it.

Here it is –
Link System: In the link system memory technique, you have to link the things you need to remember by incorporating them into a story in consecutive form.

For example, you need to remember to do these things tomorrow: driving your granddaughter to school, going back home to do laundry, walking the dog, paying the internet bill, and buying flowers for you and your wife’s anniversary.

You have to remember the words: granddaughter, laundry, dog, internet, and flowers.

Using the link system to remember these, create an associative story like this one:

You suddenly wake up early on a Sunday morning because you hear your grandchild crying. You go out to buy some treats for her but when you were able to buy a cupcake for her, you notice that it smells like laundry detergent. You go back to the cupcake shop but on your way you were stopped by a talkative internet salesman. When you finally reached the shop and got your new cupcake, the shop owner’s dog which looks like your dog suddenly snatched the cupcake. The owner apologizes and offers to give you an extra cupcake and a flower bouquet.

It’s a bigger challenge to remember and memorize names and numbers. However if you could train yourself in doing some memory exercises and strategies daily, then eventually you will be able to improve your memory and brain functioning.

Better yet, combine this with eating nutritious foods and juicing fruits and vegetables for their brain vitamins and minerals (much better than taking memory supplements).

If you do all of these, then you’re sure to be on your way to a better memory and Bran health.
