Brain vitamins are more important than you think. Most of us are aware that vitamins and nutrients are important for our bodies, but when is the last time you considered what vitamins your brain needs to function at its highest level possible? Many vitamins have a proven effect on brain function, and neglecting to address this issue may limit our brain’s potential, and even increase our risk of cognitive decline as we age.

There are many vitamins for overall brain health, but we are going to look at some of the most powerful vitamins today.

Antioxidants are a great place to start our journey. Antioxidants help our bodies (and brains) by protecting our cells from damage caused by free radicals that build up as we age. Our brains are over 50% fat tissue, which makes our brain even more prone to damage from free radicals than the rest of our bodies. Consuming high amounts of antioxidants can help slow the oxidation process down and reduce our risk for negative mental side effects associated with aging.

Two of the best antioxidant brain vitamins are Vitamin E and Vitamin C. A study from the University of Copenhagen found a link to Vitamin C and the development of spatial memory in Guinea Pigs (chosen because they rely on outside sources of Vitamin C and can’t make it in their own bodies- just like humans). Without enough Vitamin C, their memory skills were lacking. So not only is Vitamin C a powerful antioxidant, it also has other proven effects on the brain.

Now that you’re probably convinced, let’s look at some foods that contain high amounts of these vitamins:

Vitamin C can be found in many fruits and vegetables. Some of the largest quantities of Vitamin C can be found in Oranges, Strawberries, Hot Chili Peppers, Yellow and Red Bell peppers, and dark leafy greens like Kale.

Vitamin E can be obtained from a wide variety of foods, including various nuts and seeds, as well as vegetable oils, spinach, and broccoli.

That covers antioxidants, which are a great place to start when it comes to vitamins for brain health. But we have one more powerful vitamin that should not be left off the list- Folic Acid. Also known as Folate and vitamin B9, Folic Acid has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke, memory loss, and other cognitive decline as we age, as reported by CNN in 2002.

You might be thinking “I’m too young to start worrying about memory loss, this doesn’t effect me.” Did you know that we actually start losing some memory capabilities in our mid 20’s? Memory loss doesn’t just effect seniors, and it’s never too soon to start preventing the loss of mental capabilities.

Folic acid can be found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and whole grains. It also can be found in fortified foods such as bread, pasta, and white rice.

Those are the “big 3” brain vitamins. If you only took 3 vitamins for brain health, Vitamin C, E, and B9 are a great place to start.

Vitamin D or Cholecalciferol is an important fat soluble vitamin that can help lower your risk of osteoporosis and colorectal cancer. While you can get this vitamin from some foods the best way to get it is by getting out in the sun! your body can actually make this vitamin on its own with exposure to sunlight. Now this doesn’t mean that you should go bake in the sun because then you increase your risk of skin cancer. Just 10 or 15 minutes of exposure (without any sunscreen) to sunlight a day can be enough to get your body to make this vital vitamin.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which means that the body can store it up and draw on those stores later on if need be. This also means, that you can get too much of it and this can cause problems such as kidney stones, over calcification of bones and teeth, and may cause calcium deposits which can harden arteries.

This vitamin plays a vital role your body and helps it absorb calcium which, as we all know, keep your bones strong. Therefore, getting enough Vitamin D is an important way to ward off osteoporosis as well as joint damage. This vitamin is said to help control back pain and the effects of arthritis. Your body also needs this vitamin to absorb phosphorus.

Recent studies are showing that Vitamin D can be an effective way to protect yourself against colorectal cancer as well as some types of auto immune diseases. Studies are still in the early stage but show promise for this important vitamin.

Getting Enough Vitamin D

The RDA or recommended daily intake of vitamin D for adults is 200 to 400 international units (IU) per day. if you are 50 to 70 years old you want to be at the high end and take 400 IU. individuals over 70 should get 600 IU each day.

These days most milk is fortified with Vitamin D and this is a great source because you will be getting calcium along with your vitamin D and since this important vitamin helps your body absorb calcium it’s a match made in heaven. Other sources include foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids like tuna, salmon, mackerel and sardines as well as organ meats, egg yolks, butter and dairy products that have full fat. If you don’t eat enough of these foods, you might consider taking cod liver oil.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Most people have heard of rickets but probably think that this disease is from olden times and doesn’t happen anymore. Unfortunately it’s beginning to show up again and children that do not get enough vitamin D. Symptoms of this disease include soft bones and abnormally developed bones. babies that don’t get enough vitamin D may have a condition where bones don’t harden. The results of these diseases is stunted growth, bowed legs and bone pain.

In older adults of vitamin D deficiency can cause osteoporosis which weakens your bones. it’s important to note that vitamin D is absorbed in the small intestine so any diseases that affect staff such as problems with the gallbladder, intestines, liver or pancreas can block the absorption and lead to deficiencies.

Vitamins are essential for proper body function. If you do not
get enough of the essential vitamins you need, several
problems can occur, from bone loss to headaches. So, the
question you need to ask yourself is: Are you getting enough of
the vitamins you need?
You need lots of vitamins, and all are going to strengthen your
body in various ways. Let’s take a look at vitamin C, for
example.

Vitamin C is a very important vitamin. Vitamin C is an essential
vitamin to get enough of if you want to keep your immune
system functioning and for keeping your connective tissue
healthy. Vitamin C is a great vitamin to get enough of if you
want to slow down the aging process. If you get enough vitamin
C in your diet every day, it will help to keep away the wrinkles
by keeping the connective tissue under the skin strong and
healthy. Not to mention that vitamin C is a strong anti-oxidant,
and is often used in large doses to treat patients with cancer
and other chronic diseases.

Something to consider with vitamin C is that our bodies don’t
store it very well and we can’t make it, so we must get all of our
vitamin C from our diets. Eating a healthy diet chock full of fresh
fruits and vegetables, we will get plenty of vitamin C. However,
not everyone eats fruits and vegetables in the quantities
needed to get enough vitamin C. Many can’t get their children to
eat enough fruits and vegetables. So what is an alternative
solution?

While nothing can completely replace the value of eating fresh
fruits and vegetables in your daily diet, there are things you can
do to fill in the gaps. Everyone needs 5 to 9 daily servings of
fresh fruits and vegetables for the nutrients they contain and for
general health, but if you take a look at your eating habits you
will likely find that 5-9 servings is probably close to double what
you and your children are actually getting.

The following is a list of some simple things you can do to
implement more vitamins into your diet without significant
changes to your daily routine:

1. Instead of buying juices, try buying whole fruits and a
juicer and making your own. It does not take much longer, and
can provide you with many more vitamins than the prepackaged
variety. The closer you get your food to nature the better it is
going to be fore you.

2. Have fresh veggies on hand and available for snacking.
Cut cucumber, have baby carrots, and any of your other favorite
vegetables, already washed and ready to go so that the next
time you reach for a snack. It is as easy to grab a slice of fruit,
or a piece of vegetable as it is to grab junk food.

3. Make your own salsa, ketchup, etc., or buy the fresh
made variety. While it is convenient to purchase processed
salsa that does not require refrigeration until after it is opened,
many of the nutritional values are lost. So, when you are in the
mood for salsa, slice up your favorite salsa ingredients and eat
fresh salsa.

4. Try all natural supplementation of the vitamins and
minerals your body is missing. A good choice for this option
would be Zija. It is an all natural health beverage that is
conveniently packaged in a small can that can easily fit in your
purse or bag. It is made from the Moringa oleifera tree, which is
an excellent source of many vitamins, including vitamin A, B, C, D
and much more. It is also a great source for calcium, protein,

5. Have one day a week where you abstain from the junk,

may be reasons you eat certain fruits and vegetables, there are
many other reasons why you choose the ones you do, such as
crunchiness, juiciness, or bright colors. Whatever the reason, try
to eat them often; most are quick to prepare and easy to eat.

6. Try all of the above, this is a great way to meet all of
your nutritional needs with little change to your already
established eating habits. You can make small adjustments like
fresh juices and salsas, etc., instead of packaged ones, and
then fill in the gaps of your diet with the well-rounded and
extremely healthy drink Zija.

Vitamins for Panic Attacks

A panic attack is normally thought of as an out-of-control or extreme bout of anxiety. Anxiety and panic are emotions with corresponding bio-chemical reactions in the brain.

Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances in the brain can contribute to susceptibility to and severity of panic attacks. While not necessarily a cure-all, vitamins and nutritional supplements can thus play a positive, even critical role in improving the brain’s ability to function properly in regards to anxiety and panic.

Note also that stress tends to deplete the body of nutrients, or the diet may be nutritionally imbalanced or fail to deliver adequate amounts of a particular nutrient needed to maintain brain function in handling anxiety.

Vitamins and supplements helpful for panic attack follow, not necessarily in the order of importance. As always, if you are taking pharmaceutical drugs to control panic and anxiety or depression or for anything else, consult your doctor in regards to possible negative effects of combining the drugs with specific nutrition.

1) B-vitamins function best when there are enough of each kind present, hence the prevalence of multi-B supplement products. B vitamins are essential in many metabolic reactions in the body, some notably in nerve cell functioning. Vitamin B-6 or pyridoxine is known to have a calming effect on mood. Inositol (B 8) and niacinamide — the latter being an amide of niacin (B 3) and not to be confused with it — are useful for enhancing GABA functions in the brain.

In this connection note also that probiotic supplements, such as those with acidophilus and/or bifidus strains, consist of helpful bacteria that enhance B vitamin production in the gut.

2) GABA or Gamma-aminobutyric acid is an amino acid which inhibits or decelerates nerve firings from the limbic to the cortex portions of the brain. During panic attacks, the limbic system, and amygdala in particular, signal the cortex rapidly and relentlessly. GABA supplementation, especially with inositol and niacinamide, help slow down the reaction. GABA is found throughout the central nervous system.

3) Vitamin C is found in high concentrations in the adrenal glands (on top of the kidneys). The body’s need for Vitamin C increases under stress. Known for having a tranquilizing effect in higher doses, perhaps because it (with glutamine) helps reduce the production of cortisol, one of the hormone the body produces in reaction to stress.

4) Magnesium supplements, taken in balance with calcium, helps reduce muscle tension and spasm. Magnesium can lower blood pressure and is useful in proper nerve function and the body’s use of B vitamins and vitamin C.

5) Taurine is an amino acid with a similar effect to GABA. Useful for epileptic and spastic conditions.

6) Tryptophan is the amino acid found in Turkey meat which helps you feel drowsy. Niacinamide helps with the production of tryptophan, which is known to help with insomnia if one’s anxiety disorder is accompanied by sleep problems. Tryptophan is used in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter used in regulating mood. Some persons exhibiting obsessive-compulsive behaviors showed improvement after supplementing with tryptophan. 5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan is an intermediate step in producing serotonin from tryptophan. It is also available in supplement form and has been known to reduce symptoms of anxiety.

7) Tyrosine or L-tyrosine is an amino acid used in the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and epinephrine useful in controlling anxiety and depression. Dopamine has a tranquilizing effect. Tyrosine should not be take when patients are on MAO inhibitor drugs.

If a natural anxiety treatment such as the above can be found to remedy anxiety and panic attack disorders, they may be preferred to the negative side effects common among drugs. As always though, you need to find out what works best for you.

And if you have panic attacks, nutritional supplements may help, but should in any case normally be included with other remedies.

Have we discovered a cancer prevention vitamin? Are cancer prevention vitamins really possible? Is the cancer prevention vitamin here?

New studies show we just might have! Some forms of cancer may be preventable with the use of a cancer prevention vitamin. Hardly any family in the United States has NOT had a family member die because of cancer. This could change with the addition of this cancer prevention vitamin to our daily diets.

There are two studies that have been conducted using very sophisticated analysis which revealed that we are close to having a cancer prevention vitamin. Almost half of the cases of breast cancer and almost two thirds of colorectal cancer, in the United States, have been helped with what appears to be the cancer prevention vitamin, Vitamin D, (25-hydroxyvitamin D).

The data from the breast cancer study showed individuals with the highest blood levels of 25(OH)D HAD the lowest risk factors for cancer. Wouldn’t it be great if we could prevent most breast cancers? The researchers for this cancer prevention vitamin divided the data from two studies into five equal groups from the lowest blood levels of 25(H)D to the highest level of 25(OH)D. The data showing whether or not the individuals developed cancer was also included with these studies. This is strong evidence that we are closer to developing a cancer prevention vitamin for breast cancer.

The cancer prevention vitamin data from the colorectal study was an analysis of five studies relating to 25(OH)D with risk of colon cancer. All these studies involved subjects with a risk of colon cancer and explored the association of blood levels of 25(OH)D. The levels were then checked 25 years later for the development of colorectal cancer.

According to one of the doctors involved in the study of the cancer prevention vitamin stated, “We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels… which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun.”

We have several sources of vitamin D3 (possibly THE cancer prevention vitamin) in our daily routine. We get vitamin D3 through exposure of the skin to sunlight, or ultraviolet B, our diet, and with nutritional supplements. (It is important to note here that the researchers underscored the importance of limiting sun exposure such that the skin does not change color (tan) or burn.) If you are sensitivity to sunlight, or you or a personal or family has a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer, any amount of extra sun exposure would be inadvisable. Therefore a cancer prevention vitamin may be taken in higher dose for those how have this sensitivity. That cancer prevention vitamin is easily available in some vitamin supplements.

Analysis of the colorectal cancer study had shown that in 2006 that a low dose of vitamin D (cancer prevention vitamin) didn’t protect against colorectal cancer within seven years of follow-up. However, the researchers wrote, the analysis did show that a higher dose (of cancer prevention vitamin) may reduce its incidence.
