Good Mood Food : Brain Foods

Article by Mike Sweeney

We now know that regular exercise can affect your mood, increase your energy and increase confidence. In fact a recent study published in the Journal of Psychology, Health & Medicine found just 20 minutes of aerobic exercise generates the most psychological benefit including increased positivity, increase relaxation and enhanced energy levels of participants.

But what about the effects of food?

The Truth about Fat

With the benefits of exercise well established, have we forgotten about the effect food has on your mood? For example, a review published by Greenfield in 2010 found that those who regularly ate processed meats, sweetened desserts, fried food, refined cereals and high-fat dairy products were more likely to think negatively and be depressed than those eating whole foods. The best known of foods to influence mood has to be omega-3 fatty acids, partly due to the explosion of research and commercial products containing omega-3’s and claiming to be ‘brain foods’. Eating these foods may not actually make you more intelligent, but omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for normal brain structure and function. Specifically, arachidonic acid (an omega-6 found in steak) enhances cognitive function and to memorize things whilst DHA (docosahexaenic acid) is essential for normal visual and cognitive development . DGLA (dihomo-gamma-liolenic acid), arachidonic acid and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) plays a key role in regulating blood flow, balancing hormones and maintaining optimal immune functioning among other things.

What Does This Mean?Simply stated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help your brain to work, helps you to improve learning and improve memory, regulate inflammation, optimize hormones and improve recovery from exercise. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in modern diets has changed from 3:1 to approx. 20:1, this imbalance has been linked to physical and mental health disorders such as depression, ADHD, mood, appetite and reduced quality of sleep.

What can we do?There are supplements available but the easiest way to consume your share of essential fatty acids would be to consume some oily fish (salmon, mackerel), dark leafy green vegetables, dairy (cottage cheese, milk) and a good grass fed steak in your diet. These foods cover all your dietary requirements to optimize mood, cognition and recovery.

Carbohydrates, Mood and Memory

At rest the brain accounts for approx. 20% of energy consumption and it relies on a constant supply of glucose (carbs). You may be surprised to know that carbohydrate consumption can actually improve your mood and memory. It is thought the reason for this is that the synthesis of acetylcholine is increased. This is important because Alzheimers (a failure of memory) is associated with a depletion of acetylcholine and drugs that block acetylcholine disrupt memory altogether. A study published in the Archive of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in 1996 found memory and brain performance to be negatively affected by missing breakfast (yet another reason why breakfast is the most important meal of the day!). This effect was reversed by consuming low glycemic index carbs at breakfast (think oats or weetabix).

Carbohydrates are also known to be calming via an increase in serotonin, which makes you feel good and relaxed. To test this theory, Australian researchers tested the lasting effects on mood of a low-carb Vs a high-carb diet. Their research highlight that those on ketogenic diets, although they experienced more weight loss, also did not improve their mood, were more hostile, confused and depressed in the long term (over 1 year) than those consuming low glycemic carbohydrates.

Take home message: Dont skimp on carbohydrates and do not miss breakfast, especially if you need to be mentally alert.

Vitamins are essential for proper body function. If you do not
get enough of the essential vitamins you need, several
problems can occur, from bone loss to headaches. So, the
question you need to ask yourself is: Are you getting enough of
the vitamins you need?
You need lots of vitamins, and all are going to strengthen your
body in various ways. Let’s take a look at vitamin C, for
example.

Vitamin C is a very important vitamin. Vitamin C is an essential
vitamin to get enough of if you want to keep your immune
system functioning and for keeping your connective tissue
healthy. Vitamin C is a great vitamin to get enough of if you
want to slow down the aging process. If you get enough vitamin
C in your diet every day, it will help to keep away the wrinkles
by keeping the connective tissue under the skin strong and
healthy. Not to mention that vitamin C is a strong anti-oxidant,
and is often used in large doses to treat patients with cancer
and other chronic diseases.

Something to consider with vitamin C is that our bodies don’t
store it very well and we can’t make it, so we must get all of our
vitamin C from our diets. Eating a healthy diet chock full of fresh
fruits and vegetables, we will get plenty of vitamin C. However,
not everyone eats fruits and vegetables in the quantities
needed to get enough vitamin C. Many can’t get their children to
eat enough fruits and vegetables. So what is an alternative
solution?

While nothing can completely replace the value of eating fresh
fruits and vegetables in your daily diet, there are things you can
do to fill in the gaps. Everyone needs 5 to 9 daily servings of
fresh fruits and vegetables for the nutrients they contain and for
general health, but if you take a look at your eating habits you
will likely find that 5-9 servings is probably close to double what
you and your children are actually getting.

The following is a list of some simple things you can do to
implement more vitamins into your diet without significant
changes to your daily routine:

1. Instead of buying juices, try buying whole fruits and a
juicer and making your own. It does not take much longer, and
can provide you with many more vitamins than the prepackaged
variety. The closer you get your food to nature the better it is
going to be fore you.

2. Have fresh veggies on hand and available for snacking.
Cut cucumber, have baby carrots, and any of your other favorite
vegetables, already washed and ready to go so that the next
time you reach for a snack. It is as easy to grab a slice of fruit,
or a piece of vegetable as it is to grab junk food.

3. Make your own salsa, ketchup, etc., or buy the fresh
made variety. While it is convenient to purchase processed
salsa that does not require refrigeration until after it is opened,
many of the nutritional values are lost. So, when you are in the
mood for salsa, slice up your favorite salsa ingredients and eat
fresh salsa.

4. Try all natural supplementation of the vitamins and
minerals your body is missing. A good choice for this option
would be Zija. It is an all natural health beverage that is
conveniently packaged in a small can that can easily fit in your
purse or bag. It is made from the Moringa oleifera tree, which is
an excellent source of many vitamins, including vitamin A, B, C, D
and much more. It is also a great source for calcium, protein,
and potassium. Zija does not have a bunch of artificial
ingredients; rather, it is made from the parts of the tree that are
the most nutritious, They are dried, ground up, then water is
added to them and they are packaged to make a quick and easy
drink.

5. Have one day a week where you abstain from the junk,
and load up on the good stuff. One day is not too much to ask,
it is easy to do, and can taste great. While nutrition and health
may be reasons you eat certain fruits and vegetables, there are
many other reasons why you choose the ones you do, such as
crunchiness, juiciness, or bright colors. Whatever the reason, try
to eat them often; most are quick to prepare and easy to eat.

6. Try all of the above, this is a great way to meet all of
your nutritional needs with little change to your already
established eating habits. You can make small adjustments like
fresh juices and salsas, etc., instead of packaged ones, and
then fill in the gaps of your diet with the well-rounded and
extremely healthy drink Zija.

Train Your Brain Book – Want to Keep Your Brain in Good Shape? Read a Book! : Brain Training

Article by Brain Master

Train Your Brain Book

Reading a book is a great truth to do. A book can take you away to another world, into someone else’s life and to plots that will presumably never come about in your own life. Reading educates you, entertains you and aides you to keep your brain in the finest order possible.

It is wise to involve your kids in reading adventures as soon as they learn to read and write. Nowadays reading seems to be something of the dark ages, due to TV and the computer. Parents very often do not even take the trouble anymore to enthuse their offspring to read. So while the 7-year old knows all about the latest computer games and the most popular TV shows, he has not touched one single fiction book yet. That is a waste, since reading works on the imagination of children, and therefore on their brain.

We all want our children to be bright, come home with good grades and make something of their lives, preferably doing better than we did. Then reading books is a must, not only to develop their imagination and intellect, but also to sharpen their brain. And believe me, once children appreciate the value of a good book, they never stop reading for the rest of their lives, thus keep their brain tip top. Why is that? While you read, you think along with the story, you guess how the plot may develop, you hope for a certain ending of the book. The more you get involved in the book, the more your brain works.

Train Your Brain Book

The same goes for puzzles. Be it jigsaw, crosswords, sudoko, as long as you burden your brain to look for the solution, your brain gets trained. And when you train your brain, you build more connections to the brain cells inside your head; the more brain connections you have the sharper your brain is and your memory as well. With a brain in good condition, your body will stay fitter when you get older, you do not have to fear the senior years and the loss of memory.

You cannot turn back the clock, but you can start to train your brain, no matter what age you are. Even if you are already in the Golden Years, you can pick up brain training and restore what has been drained away over the years. Hurry Up! In the event you have set objectives for yourself and also you truly are determined to attain them then initial of all let me say congratulations. Creating a solid plan, setting an objective, and making a commitment to your self is the important initial step for constructive results in any area.

Are you extremely ambitious?

If you are trying something you can to realize success you then are in good business, and this is something you need to be proud of instead of ashamed of – some of the most successful individuals in business, and sport particularly read personal development books, seek out a mentor, and try a number of various issues to help give them an edge and assist them to succeed. For example when Tiger Woods was young he was already focused on becoming a world class golfer, and he put in a lot of practice, but he also sought out extra resources to assist him to realize that competitive advantage and sculpt his thoughts for success – among the issues he attempted each hypnotherapy and subliminal messages were his favourites. Stephen Speilberg, although pursuing a totally different dream also looked for alternate methods of acquiring an edge and becoming profitable. When he was first attempting to break into the movie business he did lots of “modeling” other people’s behavior – he even bought a suit and hung around the movie studios pretending to be a director – he wanted to emulate the people he wanted to be like, and would do anything he probably could to ensure his success.

Once more, he likewise became an an enthusiast of subliminal messages – later professing that it helped to boost his willpower and strengthen his thoughts against difficulties. If you are severe about reaching your goals you then need to try every thing you possibly can to achieve success. A proven way, as stated before is with subliminal messages. It isn’t immediate, but essentially acts as a mild type of hypnosis and gives your subconscious mind support towards whatever objective you’re pursuing. Foods That Are Good for the Brain : Brain Foods

Article by Chef Shael Berni

In a society where most of the food available can be more harmful to you than helpful, eating right can be quite disheartening. But not all foods available today are unhealthy, if you know where to look. Some foods can actually be beneficial to the body, especially the brain. But what foods are beneficial to the brain and where can you find them? What if you have a strict budget and don’t have hundreds of dollars every month to spend on exotic brain foods. Well, brain food is more readily available than you think, if you just know what to look for. You probably have tons of brain food in your house right now and don’t even know it.

It is a very well known fact that many of the foods we eat today might lead to many illnesses we could be getting later in life. Such illnesses may be heart problems, diabetes, cancer, even Alzheimer’s disease. There have even been reports that the top 5 cancer causing foods are donuts, chips, bacon, hot dogs, and cookies. This can be a frightening fact, especially if you have children. But instead of feeding your children food that may be rotting their bodies, as well as their brains, there is plenty of readily available food that kids like and is good for them. So, let’s dive right in.

Some foods that are great for the brain are obvious choices, while some have benefits that are not so well known. We have all heard of the benefits of eating fish, but it is also very beneficial to the brain. Fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids that help circulation of blood vessels, bring more oxygen to the brain, and lower cholesterol. Vegetables also have a long standing reputation as being healthy for the body, but they are wonderful for the brain as well. Vegetables have low levels of GI (glycemic index) which means they help slow down the sugar distribution in your blood stream, preventing a sugar crash, while providing more oxygen to the brain.

Some other foods that contain low GI levels are grains, cereals, rice, and spaghetti. Other foods that are great for brain activity are turkey, eggs, oatmeal, oranges even peanut butter. Peanut butter’s high range of protein is excellent for brain health and brain development. That is why in cooking classes for kids the first thing they always teach kids is how to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because not only do kids love them, but they’re great for their brain health as well.

Milk and dairy products oftentimes have lower GI levels than fruit and are needed for proper oxidation to the brain. Also, any food with high levels of protein is great for the brain. High protein foods release high levels of amino acids which help to improve brain power. Two of these amino acids found in high protein foods are tryptophan and tyrosine which are considered essential building blocks of neurotransmitters in the brain. These neurotransmitters serve as carriers sending signals from one part of the brain to another and are essential in high brain activity.

Brain Training Games: How To Find The Good Ones : Brain Training

Article by Brian Jones

Brain Training Games are one of the hottest trends in the market today. Seldom can you turn on the television without being reminded of the fears of mental decline, Alzheimer’s or the need for optimum brain functioning. The answer to these problems by some companies has been the creation of brain training games. These are designed to give you daily or weekly training that works at keeping your mind working at a high level. Unfortunately, not all these games offer the same results. For this reason, we have put together a list of tips to help you decide which games will give you the results you are looking for:

1. Look for scientific backing. Although some scientific studies can be misleading, most of the brain training games that highlight how their games have improved people’s mental skills in studies are far more likely to be sound. Avoid those brain training games where they appear to be more entertainment focused. In other words, are they promoting the game as a game or as actually delivering brain improvement? This will tell you a lot about what they feel the true value is in the game.

2. Check out what skills they are trying to develop.Read the literature of the brain training games to see which mental skills they are trying to develop and how they attempt to do so. This sophistication of their answers here should give you a good indication of their true intentions and it also will let you make a value judgment over whether the games can really improve those skills.

3. Try out the demo games and determine if you think your skills are improved. There is no substitute for actually trying out the games. For most of the online games, you can find demos of games the company makes. Try out these games after reading up on what skills these games are supposed to improve upon. After playing several different demo games from different companies, ask yourself which ones you think actually challenged you in that certain skill. Your response here will be very telling as to whether you think the brain training game can help you get more brain improvement in this area down the road. These thoughts can also be compared with other people’s opinions as mentioned in #4.

4. Read reviews to determine if people are getting results. One of the greatest resources at your disposal is people’s willingness to tell you over the Internet whether they believe a certain game actually delivers results. This critical information can be found on reviews of games, message boards, or in the comments on some video game websites. This information should be pored over to give you a better idea of the game’s true value. If you are hearing comments like the game continued to be more challenging and my brain hurt after doing it, odds are these games are delivering the results you are looking for.

As you can, finding a good brain training game is not as difficult as it might first appear. By being willing to look behind the marketing hustle, you should be able to find you some brain training games that will give you results that truly deliver brain improvement.

For more information on actual reviews of Brain Training Games, visit http://www.braintraininggames.net. It is a comprehensive site which offers solid tips and information on different brain training games and other brain improvement formats.

Photographic Memory : Good Digital Cameras

Article by Gordon Smith

What should you look for in a good digital camera?

Essentially a digital camera is a gadget utilized to capture pics without the usage of film. Dissimilar to the conventional camera, the digital camera does not depend on mechanical and chemical processes. It has a built in computer and records the images it captures in a electronic form.

Because the images that a digital camera captures are in electronic form, it is in a language acknowledged by computers. This language is known as pixels, small colored dots represented by ones and zeros that make up the image that you just took. Just like any regular camera, a digital camera is furnished with a series of lenses that target the light and generates the picture that you want to capture. The distinction here is that; a conventional camera focuses its light on a film while a digital camera focuses the light into a semiconductor device that electronically records the light. A built in computer now breaks the information into digital data.

An additional characteristic of the digital camera is that it contains a sensor that converts light into electrical charges. A charge coupled device or CCD is an image sensor that is found in a digital camera. Despite the fact that other low- end digital cameras use complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) as an image device, many engineers do not believe that the software can replace the CCD intended for higher- end digital cameras.

A collection of small diodes, the CCD gathers electrons when they are struck by photons or light particles. Every diode or photosite is sensitive to light, meaning that the brighter the light, the number of the electrons collected is larger. The cost of a digital camera nowadays has been depreciating, among the key causes for this is as a result of the introduction of CMOS image sensors. This is because CMOS sensors are less expensive and are simpler to produce than CCD sensors. A CCD and CMOS sensor functions the same way at first, by converting the light electrical charges into photosites. A digital camera works in such a way that millions of microscopic solar cells create a part of the entire photograph. Both CCD and CMOS perform the job with varying procedures. While shopping for good digital cameras, take note of these key features.

Image quality.

Find out the resolution of the camera. The greater the resolution, the more you will be able to enlarge your photo without the grainy or the out- of- focus effect that we all want to avoid.

Lens.

Select a digital camera having superior digital zoom. The digital zoom of the camera will let you take the photographs from a variety of distances.

Power.

Always choose rechargeable batteries, they will always come in handy, additionally you don’t waste as much money on the disposable ones.

Options.

To help you brag to pals how great a photographer you are. Or pick the one that gives options that best serve your way of life, so you won’t ever whine how you never get the right photographs.

Memory.

If you’re a photograph freak, make certain that you have adequate memory in your camera to take all the wacky, wild, and humorous photographs you can.

Computer Interface.

Always make sure that it is compatible with your Computer, laptop, palmtop or whatever your local picture printer software is, you don’t want to go running around the entire state or the country hunting for a computer that’s compatible with your digital camera.

Physical.

If you’re going to be taking it everywhere, decide a handy and portable digital camera that wont get in the way too often.

These include only the fundamental things you should to look for in good digital cameras when your thinking about purchasing one. Digital cameras are swiftly replacing all regular cameras on the market. With all its technology and convenience, the digital camera is truly the future of cameras.

Gord writes about Good Digital Cameras along with hundreds of other topics.

Sleeping is Good for Your Brain Power : Brain Power

Article by Stewart B Johnston

Today, staying up all night has been acceptable life style in the world society. In fact, sleeping at night is important and needed by your body. Sleeping at night also can sharpen your brain power.

This statement is based on a research by Geneva University, Switzerland. The study shows that people who sleep at night have better ability to recall compared to people who sleep less. Indeed, this study still needs a further research, but Dr. Sophie Schwartz concludes that sleeping at night can strengthen the relationship between brain nerve cells that have a big role in learning and recalling process.

Based on the study, you should sleep earlier to stay away from staying up all night. This activity should be done to avoid you from the senility. However, do not sleep too much.

A research about the correlation between sleeping time and dead rate is done by the Institution of American Cancer Society who works together with UCSD. The study shows that people who usually sleep for more than 8 hours in a day lean to get a higher risk to die soon.

Professor Daniel F. Kripke, an American scientist who studies about sleeping behavior of human, states that sleeping for 6,5 hours per day is sufficient for you, so there is no reason for you to add your sleeping time.

Why is sleeping more than 8 hours per day better? Jim Horne, PhD from Loughborough University, England says that sleeping too much is same as eating too much and drinking too much. It is not good to give more than your body needs.

It is known that the normal sleeping time for human varies from 2 hours up to 12 hours per day. So, how much sleeping time you need for sleeping ideally? From the American research above, it can be concluded that sleeping for 7 hours per day is the best.

So far, it is approved that sleeping for 7 hours per day is very safe. Sleeping for 6 hours or 5 hours per day is also safe for you. You do not need to worry that you will get some problems because of the sleeping habit.

However, according to Donald Bliwise, PhD from Atlanta’s Emory University, an expert in sleeping disorder topics, it is not good for you to sleep less than 5 hours per day continuously.

In conclusion, sleeping is an important phase in the correction of your body power to work. However, life is not only for sleeping even though sleeping is also an essential thing for human life. If you sleep more than your body needs so far, you should skip that habit.

You should sleep sufficiently and make sure you sleep for 7 hours per day from today. The change of this sleeping time is mainly for your better health. So, do not hold true anymore the statement that says ‘the more you sleep, the better is’.

Make sure your sleeping is good with the right platform bed with drawers. For the best option, get full size platform beds.

Brain Foods : Good Brain Foods – What Are They?

As office workers, you probably got so busy that you skip meals or just grab some junk food to save time. Are you aware that poor diet will affect your brain function? Weariness, tired eyes, poor memory are signals that it is time to take better care of your brain.

Friend, it’s time to make a change to your lifestyle, otherwise we would have to pay a high price for not taking better care of ourselves. Now, we can start from the basic but most vital change is our diet.

You require food which can provide maximum nutritional values to your brain. But do you know exactly what your brain needs?

Our brain is made up of 3 major components: Neurons, which power the message, Neurotransmitters, which create the message and Receptors, which receive the message.

Fats are not totally villains, they are actually good guys when it comes to your brain. They are especially important and useful to Neurons. Fats made up about 33% of your brain. And we are talking here about good fats – fatty acids which your brain needs to perform complex, intricate functions properly.

Now the membranes of neurons (the specialized brain cells that communicate with each other) are composed of a thin double-layer of fatty acid molecules. Fatty acids are what dietary fats are composed of.

When you digest the fat in your food, it is broken down into fatty acid molecules of various lengths. Your brain then uses these for raw materials to assemble the special types of fat it incorporates into its cell membranes. Where do good fats come from? Top two on the list should be walnuts and sesame.

The amino acids found in proteins are what form the brain chemicals, called the neurotransmitters, that motivate or sedate, focus or frustrate. In other words, they are the masterminds of your mood. Lack of amino acids is quickly detected in your emotions and behaviour. Therefore, it is important you obtain sufficient protein in your diet from eggs, cheese, yoghurts, grains and legumes, nuts and seeds.

You need carbohydrates to fuel your brain. By consuming grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, the carbohydrates are converted into glucose sugars and absorbed into your blood to your brain.

However, raising the blood sugar too fast within a short time can actually cause the slowdown of energy supply to the brain and as a result, an adverse effect on your brain power to focus, remember and learn. That’s why you feel sleepy after a heavy lunch.

Your brain also needs vitamin C to keep in its best shape:- alert, alive and intelligent. Eat at least 3 servings of fruits and green leafy vegetables daily to achieve the desired results.

Vitamin B group is needed for the conversion of glucose into brain energy and good functioning of the body immune system and mental health. Even a mild deficiency can cause you to become irritable, lack of concentration and forgetful. Foods that help include mushrooms and cauliflower.
