This is a continuation from Eating to your Smartness – Part 1, part of a series of articles about becoming smarter through foods, so visit http://www.smarter-mind.com/ if you haven’t read it.

In part 1, I mentioned of the huge benefits that foods can have on the brain, and talked about the first of the 3 important components that will help boost your brain’s power – water. In this article, I will speak of oxygen, and the benefits and importance of keeping a good supply of it to your brain.

Oxygen for Smarts

Our brain needs a lot of oxygen, and it’s a known fact – it uses 20% of the body’s TOTAL consumption of oxygen, a very huge amount considering that the brain is only 2% of our whole body mass. This is the reason the brain starts to lose its mental abilities very quickly when deprived of this all important gas.

This is the sequence of events that follow an oxygen supply cut from the brain – within 4-6 minutes, large numbers of brain cells begin to die. No more than a few minutes later, death.

From all these facts, you can see that oxygen plays a big role when it comes to the brain. The sad truth is that most of us are not maximizing the amount of oxygen we can give to the brain and thus, not allowing the brain to perform to its full potential. The lighter effects that many people experience nowadays are fatigue, sleepiness and a lack of alertness.

Chances are that you are one of the many who suffer from this. There are various ways to overcome this problem and create results that are opposite of this, in which you generally become smarter and more intelligent. It’s all a matter of knowing how.

So how do you go about doing that?

One of the ways to do this is to eat meals of smaller quantities more often. So, instead of eating 3 larger meals every day, you eat 7 smaller ones. A good way would be to have sandwiches, as they are easily brought around. This way, more oxygen goes to the brain as less of it goes to the stomach for digestion.
