Even though there is undoubtedly no correct answer as to the beginnings of scrapbooking, creating mementos and souvenirs inside of collections or other safe places is something that has been used for a long period of time. During the 15th century, books were definitely considered everyday books. Everyday books were used to document information, such as, weights, poems, medical treatments and prayers. Rather than trying to remember all of the details, it was written into a commonplace book. And, students to document mastered information used regular books. After a while, regular books also kept newspaper articles, quality recipes and pictures. Regular books had become a tool to share.

Originally a Men’s Hobby

Scrapbooking is grateful to gentlemen like Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain; the two of them maintained their favorite souvenirs in very ornamented books. The idea of collecting souvenirs of our past was more of man’s activity for many years.

Self-Pasting Scrapbook

Mark Twain was a long-term designer and owner of scrapbooking projects and committed Sundays to enjoy his hobby. He grew tired of the missing glue, rock-hard paste, and the swearing that occurred from the regular scrapbook method. He decided to produce thin strips of adhesive on the book pages to make revisions nice looking and easy to do. In 1872, he patented his “self-pasting” scrapbook, and by 1901, he had at least 57 different types of albums available for sale.

Victorian Age

In the Victorian era, friendship albums were created and provided as presents by young women. Designed remembrance books or visitor’s albums were filled with signatures, scraps, handmade cards, hair, script, poems and drawings of their family and close friends. These were a way of sharing with others and preserving remembrances.

World Conference on Records

In 1976 in Utah, Marielen Christensen fashioned imaginative pages for her family’s photograph memories that she kept in 3-ring binders. Over 50 of her scrapbooking design books were exhibited at the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City.

Today’s Scrapbook Projects

The history of scrap booking is abundant with remembrances and it is enjoyable to see how scrap booking has emerged in today’s world. After looking at the history of scrap book projects, with any luck, you’ll be inspired to keep track of your history by keeping a scrapbook of your own.

Scrap booking is an entertaining and creative way to display your pictures and souvenirs. It is easy to add a personal impact and creativity to display your memories. Sometimes a regular photo album is just not enough. Scrap booking is a imaginative technique of completing family and personal history and protecting them in a variety of ideas similar to albums in scrap booking projects, in print content, souvenirs, and, of course, photographs as well.
