There are various ways or techniques that can be used to improve your memory. There are some who use mnemonics to remember facts while there are those who remember information by being attentive. Whether you use different ways to improve your memory, the important thing is you do what works for you.

Knowing a variety of techniques in improving memory is not enough, though. Food, nutrients, and lifestyle – all of these can affect your memory. How to increase short term memory with these in mind? Here are some things to remember if you want to know how to increase short term memory with a change in your lifestyle.

First, is to exercise daily. Having a routine exercise daily helps improve circulation in the body including the brain which means that an adequate amount of oxygen is delivered to the brain. Oxygen is like food for our brain and it helps the brain function well. This in turn, can help minimize or prevent the memory loss that comes with aging. Also, the mind is relaxed after physical exercise which is good for the body. You can go for a brisk walk, cycling, jogging or swimming daily. Not only does it help to keep the body fit but it also helps the brain to function well.

Another way to improve your memory is to eat well and eat right. Your choices in food can affect your physical appearance and overall health as well. The brain cells also need essential nutrients and vitamins. Feed you brain with supplement to improve memory
such as Thiamine, Vitamin B6 and Niacin which can be found in potatoes, okra, squash, wheat, chicken, beef and other vegetables. Have a good helping of vegetables and fruits daily because they contain a lot of vitamins good for the brain. Drinking tea, coffee and chocolate drinks in the right amount is also good for the brain as they contain caffeine which is a brain stimulant. Just remember that too much caffeine can cause too much excitation which can interrupt memory function.

Research has also shown that eating foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids like tuna, kiwi, walnuts and foods containing antioxidants such as broccoli, blueberries and spinach helps to promote healthy brain functioning. Also remember to drink 8-12 glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration which can impede good function of the brain and avoid drinking too much alcohol and smoking which can deteriorate and damage your brain.

Aside from eating and exercising well, the brain also needs the body to rest. While sleeping, the brain stores new memory, hence, the amount of sleep affects the brain’s ability to recall recently learned information. Have a good uninterrupted sleep for a minimum of seven hours a night. Insomnia and interrupted sleep would impair the ability of concentration and storage of information.
It is also important for you to reduce stress. Stress which is prolonged can affect the brain and can physically damage it. It inhibits the formation of new neurons needed by the brain to function well. Although stress could not be possibly eliminated totally, you can reduce and control it. Have relaxation time for yourself by reading a book, singing, going out with friends, going for a vacation or whatever works for you.

Having a healthy lifestyle is a good way on how improve memory. Not only does it promote good memory but it also promotes the overall condition of your body too.

Short Term Memory : How Do You Improve Memory With 4 Super Effective Lifestyle Changes?

Article by Timothy Romano

An individual’s behavior and lifestyle are, believe it or not, key factors to consider when asking the question, “how do you improve memory?” Additionally, one must think about both short term, and long term memory. An example of the use of short term memory might be remembering that your spouse asked you to take out the trash before you leave for work in the morning. We use this function daily, and with a few tips, can ensure the best performance of our quick recall by how well we take care of our body.

How do you improve memory by behavioral choices? For generations, we have been taught to verbalize the words we are reading to help it stick in our memory. The benefit of reading aloud is that the text is entering your brain by two different avenues, therefore more effectively implanted in your memory.

Another behavioral factor in memory dependability is how much alcohol a person drinks. Many M.D.’s agree that having a couple of alcoholic drinks regularly has some health benefits, including helping memory. On the other hand, drinking too much alcohol is harmful to the brain, in particular a person’s short-term memory. The beneficial advantage comes from the flavonoids that occur naturally in different types of red wine. They have also been shown to improve the health of one’s arteries, as well as blood pressure. Tiny arteries in your brain, also known as capillaries are kept healthy too, consequently helping you remember more efficiently. You can also get these healthy ingredients from broccoli and other veggies, thereby benefitting people not old enough to drink, or those who choose not to drink alcoholic beverages.

Spending a little bit of your day working out will have health benefits that reach far beyond the obvious. Working out has many bonuses, including brain health, and therefore a more powerful short and long term memory! Physical exercise boosts the efficiency of your heart, lungs, and arteries, thus transporting oxygen more swiftly to other organs like the brain. If you like cigarettes, or don’t get to the gym very often, these things can really take away from your brain’s ability to take in oxygen, which decreases memory performance. Getting rid of just two of these bad habits will go a long way in improving one’s memory as well as their general health. Going to the gym also will help cut down on stress, which is a major roadblock to a healthy memory.

Psychological factors are another thing to pay attention to when talking about how to improve memory. Stress and apprehension have an enormously negative effect on the human body. Another condition to pay attention to is depression. A lot of the time people don’t even realize they are suffering from the condition. Depression draws a person in and hinders effective concentration and focus. Rather than realizing that depression may be the real problem, forgetfulness is commonly blamed instead. Additionally, because of selective memory in people with depression, often the more negative thoughts and memories are retained. When someone is exhibiting some symptoms of depression, the number one course of action is to seek out the advice of your doctor. After successfully being treated for depression, the effectiveness of your memory is almost definitely going to be very much improved.

Altering your behavior is effectively one of the first things to try in answering the question, how do you improve memory? The positives of this change in behavior will be good for your general health too, which in the long run will ensure a long and healthy life.
