Your Amazing Brain – Brain Training Therapy : Brain Training

Article by Kevin Rockwell

The truth is that nearly anything that can be said about your brain in an absolute sense is not true. This statement is true, not because we don’t know a lot about the brain, we do; and more is being learned about it every day. The statement is true because the brain is such a vast, intricate and interconnected system of systems and processes that anything we can say about must be qualified by, “…as far as we know today…” or “In one sense, it can be said…”

Your brain is composed of somewhere between 100 and 200 billion neurons! Any single neuron can have as many as 100 thousand connections! The number of permutation possible in the brain exceeds our best estimate for the number of elementary particles in the Universe! Everything you sense, the totality of your experience of the world and each other, all of the ways you discern and label one thing as distinguished from another, all of your assessments and judgments, our ideas, our concepts and beliefs, all of our emotionally infused signification of your relations, all of your inspirations and aspirations are the experience of the neurological activity within this specialized 3 to 4 pounds of tissue, floating within a sac of fluid in your head. Can you see why I think it is so amazing?

And yet most of the time, just like all of the mysterious miracles we are by which we are continuously surrounded and confronted, we are completely oblivious to what’s going on within our head that allows me, for instance, to be thinking about all this, typing it into the computer, editing as I go along, intermittently noticing the sunlight changing color as the breeze blows through the trees outside the window, wondering what I’ll be preparing for dinner.

It has often been said that your brain is actually three brains in one. Deep within your brain is the more primitive, “reptilian,” brain that automatically orients us toward the five Fs, feeding, fornicating, fleeing, fighting and freezing. This brain is pretty much hard-wired and functional at birth. It is nested within your second, “mammalian,” brain which is more relational and emotional. The functioning of this limbic brain is developed in the physical, face-to-face relationship with your primary care taker, usually, this is the child’s mother. We each learn how to read other’s emotions and intentions from very subtle cues in their voice tones and facial expressions.

The third brain covers and wraps around the lymbic brain and is called the neo-cortex. This brain allows you to recognize patterns, to create music and art and ideas, to speak and understand language, to reason, to reflect and, it seems, to be conscious of your consciousness. This brain is in development until a person is in their early twenties!

The pre-frontal cortex is being considered by some people to be a fourth brain.

Is Online Bingo A Brain Training Equivalent? : Brain Training

Article by Erim Jones

When you think of a typical bingo player what springs to mind? I’d bet my last pound that you are not thinking of a person of unbelievable mental ability sitting down with their finger hovering over their mouse waiting for their numbers to come up! I would bet however that the image that does spring to mind would be that of an old age pensioner sitting in a grim bingo hall with a handful of bingo cards? It’s a well known fact that this stereotype is now a thing of the past as now, people of all shapes, sizes and nationality take pleasure in the land based bingo game, and in recent time’s online bingo.

Recent studies have shown that online bingo has a positive effect on the brains development and can also improve the mental capacity of the player. This is great news for bingo junkies as they can now feel happy about the fact that they are playing bingo, socialising with friends and giving their brain the workout all at the same time.

The tests were conducted over a prolonged period of time to give unbiased and precise results. The results showed that those who played online bingo enhanced their memory and were able to retain more brain functionality compared to those who did not play online bingo.

The studies also proved that online bingo players could focus more when tackling issues and were able to complete tasks a lot more efficiently than the participants who didn’t play online bingo. The studies were principally based on an older age bracket; however it is believed that the younger generation could still benefit from the mental stimulation provided by playing online bingo.

An excellent way to keep your brain functioning at optimum level is to keep it active. Online bingo keeps the brain active as it requires the brain to perform multiple processes. When playing online bingo you have to execute a multitude of tasks simultaneously. All players must be alert for the duration of the game to ensure they don’t miss their opportunity winning. This is the chief reason behind online bingo keeping the mind sharp and alert.

The research was carried out on a base of 112 people with an age range of 18 -82. The participants were broken in to two groups, half played online bingo and the other half remained inactive. The results were irrefutable and showed that those playing online bingo were far more accurate when undergoing a mental examination in comparison to the participants who were passive. When the findings were compared it was evident that the age groups divide had minimal effect on the outcome, and in some cases the old outsmarted the younger participants. The research did illustrate that the younger players were almost always faster to act but not always as accurate. Although there were discrepancies in the results it was conclusive that online bingo had a positive affect on the brain.

There are other methods in which to keep the mind sharp, but they are unlikely to be as amusing and profitable as online bingo.

Now that you are aware that online bingo is an equivalent of training your brain, you won’t feel as guilty being glued in front of your computer screen for hours on end.

If online bingo is a passion of yours, it’s well worth checking out http://www.expertbingo.co.uk as they provide am in depth overview of the online bingo market available to UK players as well as providing comprehensive reviews of all the major bingo sites and hosting a wealth of related content for example; free bingo diary, bingo calls, bingo etiquette, bingo lingo and much more.

Casual Games and Brain Training : Brain Training

Article by Jennifer

What is it that draws us to games like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy? Much the same can be said for “thinking puzzles” like Sudoku games. They are designed to make us think, which for many of us is actually a challenge in itself.

We’re not stupid, mind you, but we’re “out of practice.” These games are a thrill for some adults to play because it challenges them in ways they’ve not been challenged in years. Most of us have managed to graduate from the third grade and excel up to the twelfth grade years and beyond. Yet, how often do we do basic multiplication or sort through coins to see how fast we can make fifty cents with small change?

Day to day, we develop habits and focus on a specific area of mental challenges. Some of us may use small pieces of our algebra past or geometry for software development, graphic arts or construction. Others may use advanced trig to build 18th century furniture or mechanical tool design. And, there are those select few that found a niche in their basic English classes to setup a blog and go to town.

Few of us, however, have found a complete use for the broad learning we did in our younger years.

This doesn’t discount the importance of learning in our youth! We’ve learned to specialize over the years and things we don’t use fade away into the depths of our memory. They’re still back there someplace, we just have to concentrate to recall them. Yet, at the core, this method of recollection and retraining is a very fun activity.

Proof is in the success (or creation) of such shows as “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?” Where Jeff Foxworthy shows many contestants that they are, in fact, not as smart as a fifth grader. It’s a trick really, common sense tells you things they’ve learned in the last six months are going to be easier to recall than things we learned fifteen or more years ago!

We’re really not “training” our brain to do anything new; we’re teaching ourselves to recall information we once relied on in our everyday grade school life. Memorizing our “times tables” was a priority back in the day and was a chore to say the least. Now, recalling those lessons in a game like Brain Age becomes fun! Perhaps it’s fun because it recalls the innocents of our youth or maybe, as humans, we’re just looking for a challenge… a comfortable challenge.

It’s like riding a bike! Well, not really. Unless you consider picking up a bike after fifteen years and smashing your face on the pavement a few dozen times before you remember. Very few folks will have a brain age score of 20 the very first time they pickup Brain Age.

Games like Big Brain Academy use many of the senses we use everyday but have taken for granted over the years. How fast can you identify moving objects or shapes in the form of silhouettes? Who cares, right? Consider how fast you can dodge the shadow of a dog walking into the road at night. You’re good, you just don’t recognize it as a talent.

We use these magic powers in our brain each day to some degree but we hardly consider them of entertainment value. Yet, it’s the entertainment value that we’ve found so appealing. Why else would Nintendo release Brain Age 2 for the Nintendo DS? Can you imagine what you would have said if, fifteen years ago, you were sitting in fifth grade and someone said “you’ll be playing this in a video game someday.”

Have you ever said to yourself or a friend, “I really wish I paid more attention in school”? Sure you have! It seems a lot of us have matured since then and feel we’d pay more attention now than we did as a kid. Odd how things work.

Brain Training For Complete Health

Habits are what guide many people through their day-to-day routines and brain training is something you can use to help you stay mentally focused and sharp.

Your brain is a very complicated organ. There are key elements that anyone can do to help the brain remain in the best mental state possible.

When you are performing the same activities on a daily basis, your brain can become lazy. Each day you may feel as though you are on autopilot and you might even forget some of the things you did throughout the day. Your brain might need some stimuli to stay in the best shape possible and this is something that you can easily do each day at home.

When you are beginning a brain fitness regimen you might find that it can be hard to focus and keep your attention. This is a barrier that you will need to overcome in order to introduce your brain to new activities. Once you overcome this barrier you will be able to begin to start improving brain health and this can help you to begin to improve things like memory, and even motor control.

When you are looking for the right exercise it can be important to tie in things that are also familiar. This can help you to begin training your brain with things that are not familiar and also familiar. This is a key to focus and this can help you ease into the transition of learning new things.

You also need a commitment to the exercises that you perform. If you only complete your exercises occasionally, you would not see the results that you would if you do them on a regular basis.

Setting a time each week to focus and concentrate on improving brain function can be a key to learning.

As you begin to see the right changes occurring in your brain function, you can reward yourself for these new skills that you have improved upon. Positive reinforcement can keep you on the right path and help you to stay focused to do more in the future. Your daily life may be improved significantly and you will be able to remember much more then ever before.

Brain training can help many people with improvement in the way their brain functions. It is never too early too start!

Improv and Brain Training

In today’s fast paced world there is nothing like improv comedy training to sharpen your mental skills. Who is the person whose ideas most often get heard, the man who sits in a meeting and thinks and ponders or the woman who jumps on the questions posed and comes up with an idea?

I am not saying either way produces a better idea, because in reality either method could be used to come up with the ultimate solution, or more likely the two will be combined to offer the best plan.

So how does one start to develop these skills? To start with, searching the internet one can find loads of information on improv comedy whether you are looking for books, articles, groups or anything else.

The beginnings of improv are a matter of debate, but most would point to Keith Johnstone, the creator of Theatre Sports, Viola Spolin, the “Grandmother of American Improv.” For two great reads on this subject, Johnstone’s “Impro: Improvisation and the Theater” and Spolin’s “Improvisation for the Theater” are chock full of exercises and information.

But for real experience, reading about improv is like watching a movie about taking a bath. You can’t get clean with the latter and you can’t get your hands dirty with actually getting into a workshop and putting yourself out there on the chopping block.

Some would say being on stage is the ultimate test of an improvisational actor, but most people aren’t looking for that level of exposure. And it is exposure. You have to be totally open to complete disaster, and be willing to embrace it and learn from it, if you are going to climb onto a stage. Therefore group work in workshops is probably the safest format for the average citizen looking to sharpen his or her mental skills.

Most improv is based on some sort of ‘game’ where the players are going to assume some sort of role and have random characteristics thrown at them and then they have to create something interesting out of it.

Being put on the spot gets your mental juices flowing, or you can just freeze. The difference is experience and the willingness to lay it on the line.

The first time you have a reaction from those around you, (which doesn’t necessarily have to be laughter, it could be groans or tears) you can become hooked and want to do it more and more. More traditional actors may welcome the scripted role, but I have found the freedom of improv to be exhilarating.

If this interests you at all, I would strongly urge you to go online and search for an improv workshop. You may be surprised to find one within short driving distance of your home, as many community colleges are embracing this new form of brain training.

Brain Training: It Works (to Improve Mental Skills) and It Doesn’t (to reduce Brain Age) : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

Copyright (c) 2009 SharpBrains

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic and USC Davis have just announced publication of their IMPACT study at the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The press release announces:

– “Of the 487 healthy adults over the age of 65 who participated in a randomized controlled trial, half used the Brain Fitness Program for 40 hours over the course of eight weeks. The Brain Fitness Program consists of six audio exercises done on a computer, and is intended to “retrain the brain to discriminate fine distinctions in sound, and do it in a way that keeps the user engaged,” Zelinski explained.” The other half of participants spent an equal amount of time learning from educational DVDs followed by quizzes.

This is a very interesting study, in that it shows both that brain/ cognitive training works, and that it doesn’t work.

What do I mean?

Well, it is time we move beyond this superficial discussion on it works/ it doesn’t work, and we started discussing Work for Whom? Work for What?

1) It works: the intervention (computerized cognitive training) showed cognitive benefits beyond the control (educational DVDs followed by quizzes). This is significant both in that it shows that people over 65 can improve their mental abilities, and that can be done in scalable ways, thanks to emerging technology tools. Obviously more research needs to be done, but results like these would have been considered impossible not so long ago.

2) It doesn’t work: those cognitive benefits were closely related to the trained auditory areas. The results don’t support grandiose claims that the program “helps rejuvenate one’s brain 10 years” or similar, which we hear all too often.

This is but one study in a rapidly growing area (this one is pretty large, and multi-site, and conducted by independent researchers). The key questions are becoming:

– 1) who may benefit most from improving on specific cognitive domains- auditory processing in this case?,

– 2) how can healthcare professionals support patients from a preventive and brain maintenance point of view (please note the study above had nothing to do with Alzheimer’s Disease, but with the enhancement of cognitive functions)

– 3) how can consumers navigate the growing number of products and claims?

I interviewed USC Davis’ Elizabeth Zelinski, one of the scientists involved in the study, and this is what she said:

– “The program we used, Brain Fitness 2.0, trains auditory processing. The people in the experimental group improved very significantly, which was not that surprising. What was very surprising was that there was also a clear benefit in auditory memory, which wasn’t directly trained. In other words, people who were 75-years-old performed auditory memory tasks as well as average 65-year-olds, so we can say they reversed 10 years of aging for that cognitive ability.”

In short, if you are considering buying some of these new programs, for yourself, your patients, a loved one…you do need to do a bit of homework. Yes, it would be easier if there were more specific and categorical answers…but for the time being there aren’t, apart from the general guidelines to stay active physically and mentally, manage stress levels, have a balanced nutrition.

So, ask yourself, what specific cognitive abilities would you like to work on and improve? what program offers credible evidence that it may help exercise and improve them? for what group of people (age, healthy or clinical problems,…) does the program seem like a better fit?

Winning the Inner Game of Wealth is the new Brain Training system by John Assaraf and how it works is incredible! The thing that holds 99% of people back from earning the income they want isn’t the physical but is their mind.

Since they day we are born, we are absorbing data about the univerise which includes how to think about success and money. As we grow older, these thoughts are so deeply ingrained that they become automatic and often times we don’t even realize how many negative feelings we have towards what it is we think we want.

Have you ever wondered why you try so hard but fail time and time again to generate the income you want and deserve into your life? It is not because you aren’t trying or don’t deserve it but because of those ingrained subconscious thoughts that are just contradicting what you are trying to do.

If you plant a grapefruit tree will pears grow on it? Of course not! In order to change the kind of fruit that is growing you have to change the roots of the tree! Your success works exactly the same.

Can Brain Training Games Make You a Better Driver? Allstate Insurance To Test Them : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains

Insurance company Allstate just announced a very intelligent initiative. According to the Chicago Tribune:

-“Allstate, which called the Posit program (brain training games) “potentially the next big breakthrough in automobile safety,” said it expects its software exercises to reduce risky driving maneuvers by up to 40 percent and improve stopping distance by an average of 22 feet when traveling at 55 miles per hour.”

-“We’ll look to see whether over the next six to nine months there will be a reduction in” the number of accidents between the group participating in the video exercises and those sitting out, said Tom Warden, assistant vice president of Allstate’s research and planning center.

Alvaro Fernandez: I am fortunate to interview Tom Warden, Assistant Vice President and Leader of Allstate’s Research and Planning Center, based in Menlo Park, California. Tom, thank you for your time. Can you please explain the context behind this new initiative that you just announced?

Tom Warden: Our research center is constantly looking for new ideas to improve the driving behavior of drivers of all ages. Recently we have paid extra emphasis on ways to improve the safety of older drivers.

Let me provide some background here. Allstate, as a company, has always been one of the pioneers in helping to introduce new safety measures. For example, we were among the pioneers in the 60s to advocate for mandatory use of seating belts, given research studies on the benefits for drivers and passengers alike. More recently, we helped lobby for wider adoption of airbags, an effective but expensive way of protection that only became mainstream when manufacturers were required to include them.

AF: Let’s talk now about your agreement with Posit Science. What will happen over the next months?

TW: The first thing we are doing is to conduct a research study to analyze the real-life impact of Posit Science InSight, a computer-based cognitive training program, on accident rates. We know that as drivers get older, especially in their 70s and beyond, a number of cognitive problems can get in the way of safe driving. We want to see if there is a way to reduce this effect.

We are offering the InSight program for free to over 100,000 auto policy-holders in Pennsylvania aged 50-75, and to some potential clients. We recommend participants to devote at least 10 hours to the training exercises, but of course the more they can devote the better. We will compare the results with a control group.

AF: How will you measure success, and by when will you know if your expectations are met?

TW: Given that we have already started recruiting participants and training may start as soon as next week, we may have some interesting results by the end of March 2009 or perhaps during the summer. In order to have statistically meaningful numbers, we will have to see how many people enroll in the study and the size of the observed impact. We will analyze the program compliance rates since this type of intervention needs to be engaging enough for people to devote a number of hours to at home. But, at the end of the day, what we want to see is whether using the program will translate into lower accident rates and better safety.

AF: Assuming those goals are met, what would be the next steps?

TW: In that case we will have to figure out ways to roll out the program nationwide, perhaps even offering discounts to policy-holders who commit to using the program. We would also engage in public advocacy, share the results, partner with the DMV and other agencies.

But, we have not really contemplated this yet, we need to see the results first.

AF: The InSight program is a pretty specialized program. It does not train all main cognitive skills involved in driving, such as say working memory or divided attention, but focuses mostly on visual processing. Are you conducting some type of independent cognitive assessment to identify who may benefit from that program vs. other options?

TW: No, we are not. We became interested in talking to Posit Science after they acquired Visual Awareness, the company that had developed the Useful Field of View (UFOV) technology. We felt Karlene Ball and her team brought the kind of research that stood up to our standards and held the most promise to meet our needs.

AF: What was the main business case to embark on a pioneering initiative like this?

TW: As I said earlier, Allstate has a long tradition of introducing safety-related measures, and this initiative reflects that commitment. In this case, our objective goes even beyond driver safety: we want to help our clients. We want to contribute to their overall quality of life and protection. We believe that programs like InSight can contribute to better daily functioning and quality of life. We want our clients to have positive feelings towards Allstate and to know we care about them.

AF: A potential concern we have heard in similar cases, where an insurance company offered a computer-based assessment or training program, is Privacy. How can users of InSight who are also Allstate policy holders know that whatever information the program gathers cannot be used against them, for example to deny coverage or increase premiums?

TW: That’s a great question. We are aware of that potential concern, and we are putting processes in place so that Allstate doesn’t get access to any cognitive information on a particular individual. The Posit Science program is gathering the information, and Posit Science will only share data with us at an aggregated level, for overall research purposes. Allstate will be completely blind as to who uses the program.

AF: Any final remarks for our readers to understand the significance of your agreement?

TW: We believe this program has the potential to lower accident rates and improve the quality of life of millions of adults. We are excited to be able to offer it to our policy-holders, to show our commitment to innovation and to their overall protection and well-being. We are hopeful that, if the results are as positive as we believe they can be, interventions like this can become a major new safety benefit, and that it may positively reflect on AllState’s brand and public perception.

AF: Tom, thank you very much for your time. We will be very interested in learning more about the ongoing progress of this initiative.

TW: Thank you.

Brain Training with Music

Music’s an important part of life, essential, even, for many. While styles and genres are often downplayed by detractors, all music has common and unique traits alike and its uses and applications are nearly limitless. Nothing quite lifts a bad mood like hearing a favorite song on the radio, for example; or hearing a certain tune may call back memories long forgotten of an important event or just the last time you heard the song played, summoning waves of nostalgia. Music’s not all about entertainment though, and the areas it has been put to use in are as varied as the countless types of music themselves, ranging from the obvious to the shocking.

War often inspires music, Jimi Hendrix’s catalog serving as a prime example, but few give pause to consider the role music has played in the eternal struggle of man against man. Ancient armies used to use horns and drums to signal each other across the field of battle long before walkie talkies or telegrams provided simple and easy communication and coordination of troops. Even today you can see the remnants of the war drums of eras past in the cadence calls and drumming that guides marching rhythms in today’s military displays and parade marches.

A lesser known unconventional use of music, though, lies in Music Ear Training, a method to improve linguistics skills and the ability to comprehend and learn language simply through music. Scientists are discovering that listening to a large variety of different lyrical music styles stimulates the centers of the brain responsible for language comprehension and acquisition. From infancy, childhood nursery rhymes and lullabies have an impact on forming the proper neural pathways in the brain that lead to the ability to pick up language later in life; the more exposure to music, the easier it generally becomes for the child to begin learning, and thus speaking, their native language. This phenomenon is not limited only to young children, but is active throughout life and music ear training retains its effectiveness well into adulthood. As a relatively new discovery, this training lacks dedicated resources, many of which are small or incomplete. EasyEarTraining.com is one of the few sites out there offering solid and plentiful information on the matter and they even provide apps on the iPhone to help maximize the effect you can get out of the training for a reasonable price, provided you have the hardware for it; if not, the site still provides all information and updates about music ear training free of charge to site visitors.

EasyEarTraining.com is a site founded to provide information and tutorials on how to properly train your ears to not only pick up sounds more accurately but also provide your brain with the facilities to more easily learn a new language or simply understand those you already know more clearly, entirely through conventional and Music Ear Training. All info and tutorials are free and they provide an iPhone app for training on the go to boot!
