The answer was to look at the brainwave entrainment technology that had been around for a long time. This technology was based on the fact that the brain produces frequency ranges which were electromagnetic in nature.

This was of course from the internal chemical reactions in the brain, where the billions of neurons fire electro pulses as communication vessels for the different gateways within the nervous system in the cortex. Essentially, this meant that this was how the brain communicated within the sum of all its parts. But, there was also another level to this, in which the brain seemed to peak in certain functions based on the frequency ranges, where lower ranges meant that the brain could learn better, retain information, relax, subconscious programming could occur and in the higher ranges, there was a spike of mental focus, creativity and even coping with calculations and numbers.

Brainwave entrainment technology could evoke these frequencies; based on exactly what the individual wanted. The method of delivery was ingenious, using sculpted sounds embedded in meditative music and introduced to the left and right ear in different frequencies. The difference would be picked up by the cortical and evoked. If you need to retain information better, then you would evoke a low frequency difference in the ears and thus position the brain to be in that range. If you have been looking for effective memory exercises, then there are a couple of quick and easy techniques to improve memory that you can use right away. This article describes how to remember numbers, using the ‘Power of Association’.

The Power of Association
Most memory exercises and techniques are based on ‘associating’ or linking what you want to remember with something you already know. A powerful memory is one that is created around a strong emotion, personal meaning or image.

For example, it is easy to remember all the events surrounding the time when you fell in love, because of the strong emotions you felt at the time, and because it was so meaningful to you.

In the same way, it is also easy to remember unusual things, events and bright colours because they ‘stand out’ from the more ordinary things we come across in our lives.

So the best memory exercises harness the power of association, making it much easier to remember things such as numbers.

Memory Exercise No. 1 – Remembering Your PIN.
This is a good memory exercise to try because you can choose you own PIN. It also works for any short number with only a few digits; for example, a security code.

Firstly, pick a number that is personally significant to you, but no one else could guess. It could be the date you shot a hole-in-one on the golf course – 14 March – which you could write as 1403. In most cases that association may be enough to remember your PIN.

Just to make sure, create a powerful image to link the card with your chosen PIN. For example, imagine yourself buying a new set of golf clubs using a giant credit card with the number ‘1403’, written across it.

Remember that the strength of this memory exercise lies in finding a number and image that means something to YOU.

Memory Exercise No. 2 – Remembering Phone Numbers
You may find that you want to remember a longer number, such as a phone number. Once again, the key to this memory exercise is to find something that is memorable to you.

Let’s say that your dentist has the following 8 digit phone number that you want to remember: 65494327.

The first step is to break it down into groups of numbers that will be easier to remember. Four digits is good for each group. The number given above would then break down into 6549 4328.

The second step is to replace each of these two numbers with a short sentence or phrase related to the dentist in some way.

To do this, replace each digit of each number with a word which has the same number of letters. That is, the digit ‘6’ would be replaced with a word with 6 letters.

For example, you could write the first part of the Dentist’s phone number as “Repair Teeth Soon Dentician!”, and the second part as “Sore Gum No Pleasure!”

So there you have it – 2 memory exercises you can use straight away to improve your memory skills. Remember, the more fun you have with this, the more enjoyable your practice will be and the faster your memory will improve!

The Face Method

The Face Method is intended to help a person more easily remember the names of the people that they meet, by associating a memorable and unique image with the name that helps you to recall it. This image is then associated with a feature of the person’s face that is particularly notable. There are five distinct stages involved with the method.

Firstly you must ensure that you correctly hear the name. Too frequently people will pay too little attention to the name that they are hearing, or will mishear it. This will make it impossible to correctly commit the name to memory, and so even if you have to ask for the name to be repeated it is essential that you correctly hear and understand it.

A name in and of itself is abstract and hard to remember. To make things easier you need to associate the name with an image that makes the abstract more concrete, and the more unique the image is the greater the chance that it will be easy to remember. This is the second step.

If you had met a man named Mr Madison you may for instance imagine a small boy who is so hopping mad that his face is red and there is steam coming out of his ears! He is jumping up and down on one foot and clenching his fists. The more unconventional the image the easier it is to remember.

Thirdly you need to find something about the person’s features that stand out. It may be a mole in a particular place, or big ears or nose, or a deeply clefted chin. The feature that you choose must be permanent, as opposed to hair colour that may be changed, or a moustache that may be shaved off. This facial feature must then be associated with the image that represents the person’s name.

In the fourth step you link the image for the name with the feature that you quickly picked out. The angry boy may jump up and swing off the man’s bushy eye brows in his ranting anger, that is if the eyebrows were the feature you thought to be most distinctive about him. When next you next see the man you will be able to recall the angry little boy (the mad son) swinging from his eyebrows, enabling you to recall the name Madison for the gent.

The association may be forgotten, especially in the minutes following your choosing it and so this is then the most important time to repeat it. The repetition helps to set the association to more permanent memory, and the time period between your reflections on the association should be increased from a few minutes, to an hour, a few hours, a day and upwards. If not occasionally reflected upon this association may be lost.

It can also help to set the name to verbal memory by using it more than once in conversation, at appropriate and natural seeming times. Ensuring at least that goodbyes are offered will give you a chance to repeat the name.
