Games to Improve Memory for Greater Recall : Memory Exercises

Article by Tyler Buchanan

Among the best methods for improving memory is playing games that enhance the memory and by doing activities that exercise the memory. Improve memory games and activities of this type are available and can be practices each day to improve memory without exhausting yourself.

Mental exercises can be performed as you go through your day. Many have made the comparison of the brain to a muscle that can be exercised for increased mental strength when using the right kind of activities. Using routine daily activities to give your mind a workout is one way to accomplish that. Games to exercise the memory can be improvised that help enhance recall. Perhaps you’re a TV watcher. Make an effort to come up with the answers to the questions when viewing a game show. Make a mental note of the questions and answers and see how many you can remember later. In your mind create a list of the most often played commercials and try guessing which one will be aired next.

Working crossword puzzles in the daily paper is a good memory improvement game that will give you a good mental workout. And while you’re at it read the paper the paper, because reading is a great mental exercise in itself. And while reading practice understanding what’s being said. To fully concentrate on what you’re reading read out loud slowly, and repeat it back to yourself later before moving to the next line.

You can create memory exercises while you’re working. A good game to improve memory if you work with other people is to assign a number to each person and practice recalling each person’s number later. Use three-digit numbers to make it a little more difficult. As you go to work and back to home try a different set of streets or roads and then recall the names of each later.

Doing new activities can present a healthy challenge to your mental stamina. Taking on a foreign language requires concentration and memorization, as does learning to play an instrument. Tap into your creative faculties by writing poetry or songs. Release your imagination. Don’t wait to be inspired. Make up your mind to be creative and come up with something.

Make it a habit to practice using your memory. There are so many games that strengthen the memory and provide ways to practice concentration on a daily basis. Games that improve memory are fun and helpful in passing the time when you’re in a waiting situation such as waiting to see the doctor or dentist. These exercises and games not only help to improve your memory, but they help you have fun doing it.

The biggest hindrance to concentrate is distraction. Distractions can be labeled in two ways: external or internal.

External distractions are actual physical distractions that occur in your environment. You can easily reduce or eliminate these. For example, if you can’t concentrate as a consequence of noise, you could leave a noisy room or turn off the radio.

Internal distractions are psychological distractions. Daydreams, anxiety and indecision can hinder your ability to focus. Learning how to quiet your inner voice and putting those thoughts aside until a much more ideal time will help lower internal distractions.

Lifestyle Affects Mind Electrical power

Taking care of one self is key to increasing your mind power. Adequate sleep and an appropriate diet are critical to help you being mentally alert. Concentration is best when the body and mind are well rested; therefore, morning is the best time for activities that want mental focus. A diet rich with fruits, vegetables, omega-3 and vitamin B also increases mind electrical power.

Emotional health is just as important as physical health and wellbeing. Being under stress lowers mental performance. Having a positive approach grows mental performance. If you find that you will be stressed, taking a break (quite possibly for as short since ten minutes) assists you to restore concentration and random access memory.

Exercise, both physical and mental, is the best method to improve your imagination power.

Physically, aerobic exercise brings oxygen to the brain, which helps to increase memory. Examples of aerobic exercise are running, swimming, and participating in cardio workouts. But physical exercise will not need to be aerobic to increase mind power. Yoga and meditation will maximize intellectual alertness.

Exercises For Short Term Memory : Short Term Memory

Article by Jonathan Higgins

Exercises for short term memory improvement are fun and effective. Short term memory is the one that helps you remember a phone number for a few minutes while you are trying to find the phone. Or, when you’ve just met someone and you attempt to remember their name only a few minutes after being told. If you are always forgetting names of people you just met or can’t remember a phone number for a few minutes when you don’t have a pen to write it down, then you need to improve your short term memory.

Reading Comprehension

I always like to try and kill two birds with one stone when I’m doing something. So, one of the best short term memory exercises to me is trying to recall the details of an article I’ve just read. Pick up your favorite magazine and read an article. Don’t make any extra special effort at trying to remember what you are reading. After you’ve finished the article, put it down and using a pen and paper write down everything you can remember about the article. Again, the point isn’t to memorize the article deliberately, but rather to recall what you read. You’ll find that if you do this once a day that you will get better at it and your short term memory will improve.

Setting Game

Here’s a game that friends and I have played on several occasions. While eating at a restaurant, one of us will suddenly ask another to close their eyes and describe what they can recall about the surroundings. The key is that the person has had no time to prepare. They close their eyes and we them ask them questions such as, “What clothing are the waitresses wearing?” Or, “What color are the walls?” and so on. The person is made to recall as many details about the surroundings as possible.

The Game Of Concentration

Here is the old standard. You can use the actual Concentration board game, or you can use a deck of cards. Be sure there are 2 of each card. Spread them out face down. Each player turns over two cards. If they match, he or she gets a point. If they don’t match, the two cards are turned back over. Each player needs to remember where the cards are. Say you previously turned over a two of diamonds. On this round you turned over the other two of diamonds. Now you have to remember where you saw the matching card earlier and turn it over. If you can you get a point. And so the game goes. This is one of the best exercises for short term memory.

Conclusion

As was mentioned above, short term memory is like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, it becomes weak. Work it out everyday and it will become stronger and stronger. The exercises for short term memory above are some of my favorites.

phoenixnutritionals.com (CLICK HERE) With the baby boom generation moving into their senior years, we have more people over the age of 55 than ever before. This shift in aging has forced medical science and others in the healing field to pay closer attention to heath concerns of aging than ever before. One of the areas of concern as we grow older is our memory. As the body and brain age, our short-term memory seems to become less acute. As memory fades the mood of the brain and hence the person, also changes, and older people are more susceptible to depression and an overall lack of mental clarity. For some reason, still full not understood, it is short-term memory that seems to falter first. Mental clarity is also compromised and many older people complain of being in a brain fog or that everything seems fuzzy. The very real connection between memory loss and depression or mood problems must also be addressed. Nutritional science has come to the rescue for many older people by identifying foods and nutrients for better memory and providing natural memory supplements and natural memory boosters to help this annoying situation. Loss of short-term memory can have many contributing factors. Aging itself is a major factor as the brain, like the rest of the body, does not work as efficiently as when it was younger. Stress is another major factor that can dramatically affect memory, especially short-term memory. Prescription drugs are another area of concern since many drugs

Online Brain Training Games and Exercises: Can They Turbocharge Mental Capacity? : Brain Training

Article by Gene Suser

There are more brain training games (and exercises) available than hours in the day in which to use them. In fact, with the first day of kindergarten, the brainstarts its lifelong journey of training. So, why use gamesin the first place and how are they useful? Great questions! The answers lie in recent research thatreveals how quality of life (mentally speaking) is influenced by the level and quality of lifelong brain activity. This article takes a look at that relationship andsome fun activities that can enhance it.

For most of the 19th and 20th century, the results of scientific research characterized the model of brain development in the shape of a wave. This is to say, thebrain reached a maximum point of development during adulthood and then began an inescapable downward march intodementia. The once sharp mental processes would simply losetheir potency, irrevocably breaking down due to age.

Today, new research indicates (as with that old Porgy and Bess song) it ain’t necessarily so. Current research indicates the brain has the ability to adapt to new demandsplaced on it. Far beyond simply developing folds with age, this organ has the ability to reconfigure itself in response to information processing demands. This means it can re-assign, re-task or rebuild cognitive processing (sometimes to alternate physical regions) as required.

Though it had been believed that cognitive processing was fixed to specific physical regions of the brain, advances in technology have now shown a much different picture. The brain is much more pliable, subtle and adaptive in handling the information demands coming fromits environment. The key is in maintaining a constant level of demand that keeps the brain developmentally active (as opposed to just keeping your heart beating).

Brain training and exercises leverage this adaptive capability (now referred to as neural plasticity or brainplasticity). These exercises and techniques engage the brain using specially designed basic cognitive processing tasks (for memory, visual processing, response time, etc…) in the form of simple games. These small demands for information processing, essentially exercise the brain by requiring it to really focus,to win the game. The games begin simply. Then ever so gradually, craftily, seductively, they escalate indifficulty until, though your brain is really working, it becomes difficult to pull away. Oddly, in some ways, it’s relaxing.

Of course, there are alternate ways to engage in more brain training. Consider active learning. In active learning our advanced cognitive processes (critical thought, creative problem solving, deductive reasoning, etc..) are brought to bear in acquiring new knowledge aboutsome subject.

An example would be learning a new musical instrument or foreign language. Such endeavors would exercise reaction time, motor control, pattern recognition and abstract reasoning (not to mention a very intense use of basic memory processes). Learning the subjects can be time consuming, though each carries its own rewards when mastered. Learning is an activity most of our brains are well suited in performing. It is the original form of brain training.

A significant advantage derived from engaging in more braintraining games and exercises (online at least), is dollar savings and convenience. Rather than exercise basic cognitive processes through advanced cognitive processactivity, as with active learning, online software based brain training engages the basic processes directly. This approach does not require books, musical instruments or any other item except a computer and an internet connection. All in all, quite convenient and less expensive than most activelearning approaches (tuba and tuba lessons, anyone?). Additionally, online game content is updated as neural research advances. Not to mention, it can be a lot of fun. Who would’ve thought that getting a bigger faster brain could actually be fun?

Regardless of the approach, be sure to engage in a consistently exertive level of activity. This is best because a consistent and rigorous workout level causes the brain to interpret the activity as definite information processing demand requiring an adaptive response. Like a muscle, the brain’s response to significant increased workload is to become stronger (be sure to include a proper amount of rest).

Over the long haul, a regular and rigorous cognitive workout can yield significant health, well-being and long term quality of life benefits. Even though such results are desirable, it can be difficult to generate the needed motivation. That being the case, it is important to make sure to maximize the fun factor associated with a workout regimen. If the workout is not fun, at least make certainthat it is interesting. Otherwise, the least distraction will serve as reason to find something else to do. Where the mind leads, the brain and body will follow. It’s one of the reasons online brain training games tend to be so effective. They start simply, but remain engaging.

Online brain training games are an excellent way to help extend high cognitive function and quality of life. Ashigh-tech research proceeds, we find increasing evidence that the brain has amazing capabilities previously unsuspected. Oddly enough, to take advantage of these capabilities no exotic equipment is needed. Simply by engaging in more brain training games and exercises, the long term health benefits are easily attainable.

Here’s one of our favorite brain training sites on the net. There you will find free information, gamesand exercises scientifically designed to increase yourbrain’s processing power. Just register and go. Enjoy!

Memory Game – The Modern Exercise Phenomena : Memory Exercises

Article by David Akihito

The modern memory game is truly a phenomenon. Normally, we associate the word exercise to hours of sweat and hard work, jogging hard on that treadmill that we hate so much. However, never before in history has exercise become as enjoyable as it is today with the introduction of games. This is especially so for the memory exercises, many of which have been turned into memory games for helping us to develop our memory and mental ability. There are a variety of different memory games and exercises which can help you to improve your memory, productivity, performance, and overall mental health.

Different exercises may address different forms of memory as well as different part of the brain, so let us first examine a few of the various types of memory and how they play a role in the types of memory games that have been developed. The most commonly understood types of memory include short-term memory and long-term memory. These are forms of memory that we use in our daily lives. Most of the memory game assortments that exist out there are built on training the short-term memory facility of the brain. However, there is still the random memory game that goes into deeper sub-categories of the short-term memory. These include areas such as our spatial memory, meaning the memory of the position of various items that we have.

Some of the more common memory games that are available include the match memory game. In this form of memory game, we need to match one thing with another, and this is usually in the form of a one upturned card with another card that is lying down and whose face and position we need to remember. This is actually quite an easy game to play, but it does wonders for improving the memory ability of an individual. This type of match memory game is popular among both children and adults, and there are many computer versions of the game as well.

Other memory games basically focus on simple short-term memory task such as remembering symbols or pictures which are given to the players. These are often set in different environments and can have added sets of rules for small challenges that the players would enjoy. One variation on this type of memory game is the requirement to memorize audio. Thus, instead of memorizing pictures of symbols or shapes, participants are required to memorize audio playbacks. This is more challenging than the normal visual memorization as most games are focused on visual memory such that most people have never thought of training their audio memory.

If you have been concentrating on memorizing things through pictures so far, you might want to consider giving your brain a twist with a memory game that is focused on other parts of the senses, such as memorizing an audio playback, or memory related to other senses of the body. There are also certain memory games that you can play at home that require you to memorize things based on your sense of touch or even your sense of taste. Have a try at all the different varieties of memory game available, and exercise different parts of your brain for the most benefits.

4 Exercises to Improve Memory

Imagine remembering every little detail that you experience with your senses. You would eventually go mental with information overload. That is why the brain filters out information it does not regard as relevant. The downside to this is that at the same time it dismisses information that we might need or want to access at a future point in time. However, there is a solution to this as there are exercises we can do that help improve our memory.

Memory Palace
This technique is the one used by the eight time memory world record holder Dominic O’Brien to remember the sequence of 2808 playing cards. The concept is pretty simple. You create a route through a location you are very familiar with such as your home or your way to work. You then break this route down into little steps, each step being an object. You must have this route very clear and memorable in your mind as without this factor, the memory palace is useless. You then take the list of whatever you want to remember and associate each item with the next object along the memory palace path.

Book summary
When you read a book, you will only remember the most relevant aspects or those most interesting to you. However, if you take the time to summarize what you have read after each chapter or reading session, your mind will draw relations between the different subjects in it, forcing you to recall them all (or at least more that you would have otherwise). A great way to summarize themes, characters, relations, themes, etc is mind mapping as this really breaks it all down wonderfully.

Childhood memories
We have many of your memories stored in little fragments in our brain.

However, not all of these fragments are equally readily available when we need them. For this reason it is good to train ourselves to dig into our memories from time to time as try to assemble as many bits of information as possible to get the most complete picture vividly in our minds. This will help train the brain to find relevant stored information and bring it forward to be used. Over time we will become rather good at providing very thorough memories when we need them spontaneously.

Children’s Homework
It is very likely that what you did at school is still being taught to children now. However good or bad you were at the subject at the time, it is still a great way of forcing the brain to bring back the ability to solve those problems.

Restore Your Lost Youth – Naturally : Memory Exercises

Article by sacha tarkovsky

Is it our fate to merely be young in our teens till perhaps our 30’s, and then without any alternative, just join middle and old age?

Can we really restore our lost youth, naturally without surgery and expensive medications? We can, as our body is inexorably linked to our mind and those morphogenetic fields that determine our future.

The Konov Principle

Named after the Russian artist and creative thinker, Sergey Konov, the Konov Principle, once learned, will let you recover your youthful thoughts, and those thoughts will lead the body to a more youthful and healthy appearance.

This is because the body will respond to the mind’s instructions, and the mind always follows the morphogenetic pattern which it perceives.

How the Konev Principle Works

Based on the mechanism of genetic memory (which is grounded in morphogenetic field by Rupert Sheldrake who postulated the mind has all the records of what occurred in our youth, including the production of youthful hormones known as Human Growth Hormone (HGH).

By accessing the genetic memory, one can re-awaken the processes that took place in our youth, and at least in part, re-start them

Studies have shown that when we live a natural life in clean unpolluted air, eat natural food, and have an active life, we retain a youthful appearance anyway into old age.

The effects of modern life mask our genetic memories, and we begin to adopt life-styles that age us prematurely. The Konev Principle works to restore those essential parts of our genetic memory.

An good example would be where we watch a game of sports, say football, and recall it was a favorite of ours in our youth.

Something in the mind is activated, and we suddenly desire to play football again.

Granted, the body may not now be equipped to play, but the mind has perceived that playing is possible, and desirable. The Konov Principle is at work, as the genetic memory is accessed.

Turning Genetic Memory to Our Advantage

Having regained the desire for football, with the mind assisting the body, we might start a diet, go to a gym, and begin to bring the body into shape. Once started, the body will produce its own HGH, testosterone, and other enzymes that will aid the body in its desire to regain the lost youth.

You will look and feel younger. You will produce your own HGH, and you will find your health and appearance improving as collateral benefits to your effort.

Since all memories are stored in some mechanism of the brain (we assume) that is not fully explainable, we also then have to assume the genetic memory of physiochemical events that took place in our youth can be recalled (if not to mind, to the control mechanism that activates the endocrine system).

Pre-Mature Aging and the Genetic Memory

We age, and perhaps pre-maturely due to our shutting out the genetic memories of our lost youth, seek relief in creams, in beauty treatments and exotic medications, but in fact, pre-mature aging in only a symptom of forgetting our genetic memory.

Genetic Memory Exercise

With some basic relaxation exercises accomplished, and in a contemplative state, visualize yourself in your golden moments of youth.

Remember consciously when you were strong and in full recent growth, and see yourself again in that appearance. Visualize yourself as looking in a mirror, and see yourself as you were, not are. You can also visualize yourself as you wish to be,

This exercise, done daily for as little as 10 minutes, will relax you, but more importantly, will help you to open the doorway to your genetic memory (whether or not you can perceive it). Your body cannot help but respond.

Granted at 60 you will not look 30 again, but you will look a youthful 60, and that may mean 50, or less. You will look it and begin to feel it.

Memory Exercises That Will Increase Your Memory Power

Various kinds of memory are stored in different parts of the human brain. Within seconds, the brain has to be able to pull information like telephone numbers or dates. Every now and again our minds fail us and it does not always allow us to retrieve the memories when we need them, when we need them the most. At times, memory lapses are trivial like when you misplace the grocery list and find it later hanging on the refrigerator the whole time. Other times these lapses in memories can be more severe like when we forget that the boss just went through a messy divorce after asking how his wife is. Gratefully memory lapses are not a done deal. You do not have to live with this the rest of your life. Improving your memory is not a difficult thing to do. There are some easy ways to approach this. It does not matter if you are a District Attorney arguing a complex case or someone who is worried about passing the LCATs, there are a few things that everyone can do to improve their memory.

You know the old adage of tying a string around your finger to remember something, don’t you? This action may seem a bit funny and questionable but the reason behind it makes sense. By putting something in your environment that does not belong, a visual reminder is created for yourself. The important thing is to take the time to create a strong visualization for why there is a string around your finger in the first place. A string is not the only thing that you can use. You can use anything that will help you to remember what it is that you are trying to remember. Use a different coffee mug you don’t normally use. You can also try using an object in your environment. If you need to remember to pick up your dry cleaning on the way home from work, try placing something on your dashboard blocking your view after you park the car. This strange object in your view will help you to remember to pick up your dry cleaning.

By using visualization and association, you can improve your memory. This plan requires you to turn words into images so that you remember the words better. Let’s say you need to remember that you have a doctor’s appointment at three in the afternoon. Take a moment and think of a visual image for three. This could be the story of the “Three Little Pigs.” Visualize those three little pigs waiting around in the doctor’s office talking to other patients and reading US Today. The key word here is easy. Funny images are easier to remember with the information you need to remember. Now, you will immediately remember that your doctor’s appointment it is at three o’clock because of those funny pig images you created.

Improving your memory does not have to be difficult. Using easy methods like the ones suggested can help tremendously. By using these methods everyday, it will get to be a habit and you will begin to have an easier time recalling information that you once had a hard time with.

Arnold Smith has compiled a FREE mini-course that will greatly improve your memory. His course is packed with great innovative ways and techniques to increase recollection of information. If you are ready to get to the root of your memory loss and

Mind PowerYes it is possible to go through a programme to help you build up mind power and we have a quantity of of the best here on our site. Nevertheless for those of you who want to have a lighter touch you can assist your memory by doing a little fun workout with mind games everyday.

Here are a few thoughts to get you going:

Story Telling

Ask your friend to put a few bits and pieces on a tray and then you have to try and memorize them all correctly. Do it by making up a story – or even better make up a story about them all with your friend. It isn’t cheating! Each of you take a turn telling a story you are just making up on the spot which connects each object with the next one. As you tell the story use your imagination to really design a good image of what is happening in the story. That makes it much easier to remember.

Here is an example of a story about the first three objects on a tray when they are a bowl, a leaf and a pen Person 1:on the sideboard there is a big tall bowl made of very shiny metal and….

Person 2: John’s mother decided that it would look beautiful if she put some small branches with autumn coloured leaves in it so shePerson 1: Decided that she would gather some branches from the park on the way to the supermarket. She took out her pen to write down her shopping list and on it she… …. Once all the objects have been integrated in the story, take them away. Now see if you can remember everything. Next try to do it together as you will both probably remember different parts and that will help you get the whole list right.Matching Pairs

This involves matching pairs of like playing cards when they have all firstly been placed face down. One person at a time turns over a card, lets everyone see it and then places it back on the table, face side down again. Steadily the group of players begins to get an idea of where particular numbers or face cards are lying and can locate a matching pair when they turn up a card on their turn. You can also play with a half deck of cards by removing two suits first and then use the 24 cards left. Once they are face down, move the cards around on the table so nobody really knows what is lying where anymore.

Jenny Rachel Wilsen is a psychologist specialising in developing and researching techniques for brain enhancement. 70% of our brain power comes from what we put into our brains and how we stimulate them. Only 30% is to do with genetics.

How Short Term Memory Exercises Can Help You : Memory Exercises

Article by Gregory Frost

Memory loss is just one of the illnesses that commonly hit the folks once they reach their golden years. One of the examples will be Alzheimer’s disease that is pretty common among our grandparents. It might be shocking to you if you hear that your 35-year-old friend is suffering from short-term memory loss. How can a 35 year old have the memory capacity of a 53 year old? No, it is not impossible and short-term memory loss can happen to you. It can happen to anyone actually. Short-term memory loss can be a serious problem and not to mention you can cause quite a lot of confusion and frustration to the people around you. So, check out these sleek tips and see for yourself how short term memory exercises can help you.

These short-term memory exercises do not even cause you a penny. These cheap and easy techniques are good for use anytime you want to remember loads of information.

The link system is very ideal for use, especially when you are trying to remember information in the form of a list. For example, if you are given a grocery list, try to make use of the words in the list to form a ‘link system’ and link all the images together to form a mini film. Let’s say that you are given this list of items – cat, bread, flowers and shirt. How to remember all these items the quick and easy way? Simple imagine the image of a cat wearing a shirt with flower prints and eating bread. Continue linking more and more items together as the list of things grow. Tried and tested, this particular technique will allow you to remember all the things in the list in a jiffy.

The second memory exercise is to use the peg system. This is good to use when you are required to memorize a set of things in a particular order. To proceed with the peg system, simply associate a number with an image. So let’s say that you have a series of animal to remember in a particular order – cat, dog, dolphin and giraffe. Give a number to each of these animals i.e. 1 cat, 2 dogs, 3 dolphin and 4 giraffe. After which, use the link system mentioned previously to create some kind of mini film so as to allow you to memorize the arrangement with greater ease.

Alternatively, you can use the ever classical method of remembering large amount of information – Mind mapping. This technique has been used for eons of years to teach students to compress large chunks of information onto a piece of paper. This method is effective if you are planning to remember large amount of information at one go. However, some choose to think otherwise and are not in favor of using the mind mapping technique, as things can get messy as you keep of branching out new ideas/information from the key concept.

All these 3 memory techniques can provide you with great ease when it comes to remembering information. Some people panic when they are unable to remember what was being said to them just a few minutes ago. This does not mean that they are suffering from short-term memory loss. It is just that sometimes, the brain is not able to retrieve all information fast enough; hence we might miss out the certain details. Using the 3 methods suggested above will sure help you hold on to information longer. Go and try it today!
