I’ve been reading Joshua Foer”s “Moonwalking with Einstein,” a fabulous tale of a journey into the world of memory championships, and remembering all sorts of different tools I’ve tried over the years to improve my memory. I always wanted to have my grandfather zt”l’s memory.

Legend says that Simonides of Ceos was the inventor of the method of loci where large amounts of data can be remembered in order by placing images that represent the data into mental locations or journeys.

As a child, I hadn’t heard of Simonides, but I was raised with Simanim, mnemonics, to memorize all that I studied. One method was to take boring material (quite rare in Torah) and associate it with a more exciting memory.

Late Motza’ei Shabbat in Yeshiva, the students would somehow get into the kitchen and make french fries. They loved using this huge machine which would peel the potatoes and spit them out in pieces shaped perfectly for fries. I wanted to try a memory segula found in an old book consisting of ginger and pepper fried in honey to eat twice a day every day for six weeks to attain a photographic memory. I used my small savings to buy a frying pan and ingredients, and while everyone was playing with the potato machine and making fries, I was frying the ginger and pepper in honey. The frying pan, for some odd reason, didn’t survive my cooking or whatever you want to call my efforts. I lasted slightly longer than the pan; three days of intense stomach aches. (I found the segula, and surprisingly, it doesn’t say anything about frying. I forgot why I chose that method of cooking).

Nothing I’ve tried has been as effective as Joseph who was not only a master of memory himself, but was a superb Memory Creator. Not only did he keep his memories in the forefront of his mind, as in, “Joseph recalled the dreams that he dreamed about them (the brothers) [Genesis 42:9],” he did whatever he could to help them remember all the important events of their lives, and then some.

Note: I would have described Joseph’s dreams as being about him, and yet this verse says that the dreams were about the brothers! This would change our understanding of why Joseph shared his dreams with his brothers, even when he knew how much they were upset by the dreams. This would also explain why the brothers were so bothered by Joseph’s dreams: They could live with a younger brother who dreamed of being in charge; they could not bear this little kid having visions of what they would have to do.They assumed that Joseph’s visions of them bowing indicated their taking a subservient role. Joseph begins to challenge them to recreate their memories of their self-perceptions as reflected in their response to his dreams:

“Now Joseph, he was the viceroy over the land, he was the provider to all the people of the land. Joseph’s brothers came and bowed to him, faces to the ground (Verse 6).”

The Midrash and commentaries (Ramban) wonder how the brothers got directly to the viceroy. Thousands of people were coming for food, and Joseph surely had hundreds of people working for him all over Egypt. Why did all the brothers go to one distribution center? Would it not have made more sense for them to spread out and purchase more of the limited supply of grain? Did they not realize that appearing together would spark suspicion?

The brothers would only go directly to the top because of who they were. Here they were, bowing to the viceroy of Egypt, their faces too the ground, and still connected to their dignity as the Children of Israel. Bowing, yes. Subservient, not. They were beginning to realize that Joseph’s dreams were not as threatening as they had believed.

Joseph successfully began his process of reframing their memories.

The best format to save your scanned photo in is a jpg format. The scanned photo is compressed so that the file size becomes smaller. If you were to enlarge the photo onscreen you’ll observe that the quality of the image becomes poorer. However, the jpg format is ideal for most of your photo scanning requirements as its easy to work with and quick to download.

Scanning Slides and Negatives

You shouldn’t just stop at photo scanning. You should also scan your slides and negatives to make sure you’ve got a copy of you personal history in digital format. As slides and negatives will deteriorate over time, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to view your slides and develop photos from negatives after several years of neglect. So your best bet to maintain an accurate photographic record of your family history is to have your slides and negatives scanned to digital format.

Scanning Services

If you can’t scan your photos yourself, use scanning services which charge a fee. Don’t scan at a higher resolution than 300dpi. You don’t need much higher than that unless your require very high quality print images of your photos. Generally, 300 dpi is the best choice for photo scanning. You’ll have to pay a higher rate for 600 – 1200 dpi and the file sizes will also be larger. That means you’re going to use up quite a bit of hard drive if you’ve got plenty of photos to scan. They will also load slower when you upload them to your web photo folder or send them to your friends as an email attachment.

Photo scanning is the ideal method to preserve your prized photographs from deteriorating. You don’t have to worry about your photos fading, gluing together or getting burnt to a crisp and lost forever if you’ve got a scanned copy. If you are a photographer, memory cards are most likely the devices that hold the key to storing your treasured memories. If you know how to take care of this “key”, your lockbox of memories are safe. If not, you may be gambling with your memories.

A few things to remember about memory cards. Although there are no moving parts in the standard card there still are a few things that can be done to extend their life.

1) Format your card regularly and always do so while it is in your camera, not when it is connected to your computer. In fact, not only should you not format your card using your computer, but you should not even delete individual files. The problem with erasing or formatting cards on your computer instead of in your camera has to do with the ways in which these tasks are performed by the two and how the two ways are often incompatible.

By regularly formatting your memory card in your camera you can avoid memory variables and lost clusters. Formatting in the camera also helps to be sure that if a card is used in multiple cameras there are not any lost images or folders saved in one camera that cannot be read by the current camera. There could be times when the total available space to store your images is not accurate, due to folders or images saved from use in multiple camera.

2) Removing your memory card from your camera: It is very important to remember to always turn your camera off before removing or inserting a card. When your camera is turned on and your card is inserted the two are connected, passing information and in some cases electrical power. Pulling out your memory card can literally cause things to go haywire, often corrupting the card and making it unusable. Make sure that all the images in your cameras buffer have been saved to your card. Turn the camera off and then you can safely remove your memory card.

3)Removing your memory card from your computer: If you are using card sockets in your computer or are using an auxiliary memory card reader via a USB port, you should always use your computer’s functions to power down your card reader or USB device to safely remove the memory card or card reader. It makes no difference if you are using a Windows based system or an Apple Computer. Be sure to follow the proper procedure to power down or eject your memory card or card reader to avoid any damage to your memory card or the files contained on it.
