Do you feel, you are born with a poor memory, or somewhere along the line it has become unreliable? Chances are, you are mistaken – You might still have a fantastic memory. In most cases it is us acquiring bad memory habits because we don’t know how our memory works best, rather than having some sort of deficiency. Here are six powerful tips to improve memory.

1.Concentrate on what you want to remember, and avoid doing multiple things at the same time whenever possible.
Our brain needs time to convert external information into a memory – and you have to give him / her that time. So next time you want to remember the name of a person you are introduced to, give that name your full attention. Even repeat it by saying, nice to meet you Heather.

2.Stop multitasking: Research has shown that multitasking does not work well when it comes to memorizing information. So if you are talking on the phone while you are going to another room to fetch something, don’t be surprised if you have forgotten what it was. This is normally not a sign of your memory failing. The average person can only hold a very limited amount of information in their short-term memory, and this capacity is being used up by paying attention to the phone call.

3.Excessive and ongoing stress impairs memory. Constant worries and large amounts of cortisol (which are released when we are stressed) have been shown to impact our ability to recall information, and to memorize new information. So if you are feeling stressed out, it is time for a break, not more of the same.

4.To create a strong memory for new information, you have to connect it to something you already have in your long-term memory. This is the main reason why the more you know about a certain topic, the easier it gets to learn new information. How can you deliberately create strong associations? Visualize information you want to remember. Research strongly indicates that we remember images better than words.

5.Think about the meaning of information you want to remember. You can quite easily achieve this by asking questions. For example, whenever you hear a new name, number, or strange term, ask yourself: What does this mean to me?

6.Practice recalling new information. The first step to a good long-term memory for
anything you want to remember, is creating an association with existing memories. To further strengthen this association practice recalling the information. For example if you have been to an important meeting where you met lots of interesting people, ask yourself after the meeting: Who was there? What were we talking about?

Practice these 6 tips in your daily life and I am confident you are going to surprise yourself as to how good your memory actually is (and always has been).

Do you know your date of birth? The name of the President or Prime Minister? These are questions that are regularly used to test for memory loss – the first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although memory loss occurs in all cases of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be difficult to detect in the early stages as many patients manage to cover it up well during tests as a matter of pride.

It’s the recent things we’ve done such as in the last hours, days or even weeks that are the first memories to be lost in Alzheimer’s patients.

However, while those things that are placed in our short term memory are the first to go it’s only much later as the Alzheimer’s condition has become much more severe does the past or longer term memory become affected.

This makes the degree or memory loss a very useful tool in assessing the presence and scope of the disease as if the patient is co-operative and asked in a pleasant way the results can be very revealing.

The following ten questions form part of a common test as they cover both the short and the long term memory and also test for orientation as well.

How old are you?

What is your date of birth?

What day is it today?

What month are we in?

What year is it?

When was the first world war?

What is the name of the President / Prime Minister?

Where are you now?

Can you please count backwards from 20 to 1?

Tell them an address, then ask them to repeat it back to you after five minutes.

Although the test is deceptively easy it is also very useful as it’s quick, cheap, non-evasive and helps diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and gives an indication of the areas in the patient’s memory that may be affected.

Care must always be taken as a low score on its own doesn’t prove dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, as not all people will know all the answers to the questions!

Instead it’s a guide or an indication that something may be wrong and requires further investigation.

Another one of the leading ways that this can happen is through stress. Many of us are very familiar with stress and this can happen due to emotional conditions or when things happen at work. When stress onsets in the body, the physical and mental structure of the body will then respond in negative ways. Androgens, adrenalin and levels of energy will then drop and the body will enter into a mentally catabolic state where it will not respond or act in quite the same way.

This is especially true of the mental faculties, as best as it can be described, stress is like the sponge that clogs up the pipelines and the inner workings of the brain. As it can manifest itself physically, stress can clog up our memory as well and cause more than just short term memory loss. Have you ever known someone with a “photographic memory”? Such people seem to absorb information faster than a paper towel absorbs liquids. But while it’s easy to assume that people with super memories are super intelligent, the key to their ability is in the methods that they use to remember information. By learning and mastering some basic techniques, you can also boost your memory. Here are some tips to make it happen:

1. Get enough sleep.

Sleep is our body’s way of “rebooting” our systems. Besides allowing our bodies to recover, sleep also helps our brains to process all of the information that they received during the day. When we fail to get enough sleep, our brains experience an overload of memory. Besides improving the actual memorization of information, getting roughly 7-8 hours of sleep nightly will also help us to be more alert during the day. And that will further boost our minds’ ability to memorize information.

2. Organize before you memorize.

It turns out that our brains work much like today’s computers do. The more efficiently we store information, the more available storage space we’ll have. So when memorizing information, store it into chunks that are logically grouped. Storing similar information together will improve the efficiency of your memorization.

3. Use visual and auditory input.

Our senses have a crucial role in creating our memories. Catalysts such as pictures, graphs, and recordings can help to make our memorization more concrete. These types of techniques are particularly effective for those who are “visual” or “auditory” learners.

4. Learn mnemonic devices.

These are techniques that make it easier to memorize information, and there are tons to choose from. One of the most popular and effective methods is the use of acronyms. For example, ROYGBIV is an acronym that represents the major colors of the rainbow. Certain mnemonic devices work better for certain people.

5. Make memorization meaningful.

It’s one thing to memorize facts and figures for the sake of doing it. It’s quite another thing to make the information meaningful. Make it personal and seek a deeper understanding of the information. These basic steps will help you to memorize more information, and memorize it faster.

6. Connect new information with prior knowledge.

You’ll be able to store information faster, by linking new information that you memorized, with information that you memorized in the past. By linking new information with old information, you’ll improve both your short-term and long-term memories. The most effective way to do this is by finding relationships between the new and old information.

7. Link information to your interests.

Even information that’s as dry as desert sand can become easier to memorize, if you connect it to your personal interests. Learning becomes much more enjoyable (and thus more effective) when it’s related to our personal interests. This will significantly increase how fast you can memorize information.

While not all of us are born with a photographic memory, by using these tips you can transform your brain into a super computer. Forget about needing to say “I forgot” throughout the day!

Everybody wants to gain skills like that of the popular mentalists.So why are not everybody becoming like that?The only reason i can think of is laziness.I agree that i am not a mentalist.But since 24 months,i have been practicing hard and believe it or not,i will surely say that my performance at everything has grown in a monstrous way.I am a big fan of the photographic memory improvement techniques and i think nothing can beat them in increasing a person’s memorization power.But i may be wrong though since i have not tried any other method and am fully concentrating on the photographic techniques.Anyway,once i master this technique and i will move on to the other ones which have also been long known as the best techniques for memorization.

The photographic memory,according to me,plays the key part in teaching anyone how to memorize as quickly as possible.It is like capturing anything as a picture and later bringing that in focus and extracting details out of it.I can say it this way too.Suppose say there are a group of men standing in front of you and you want to remember all their faces.One thing you can do is photograph them and then see the photo again and again to recall their faces later in life.Similarly,instead of using a camera,use your brain to capture them as a picture visually and store in your mind.Retention is also important in addition to storage.There are three vital things you need to master to get the most out of your precious brain power:

1.temporary storage,

2.storing the data in permanent storage,

2.extracting the information when needed.

All these are required if you want to become a mentalist too.But all these need is your willingness to learn and practice all memorization techniques which is what most people lack as already mentioned at the beginning of this article.

It will be cool to actually remember all the names of the people we meet or recite from memory all of the books that we have read. But not all people are blessed with a photographic memory that can capture a lot of data. The most that most people can do is to remember about 50 percent of the details in the books that they have read and recall about 10 names in the 50 people they meet. But hey, this does not mean that we should all give up wanting to make our memory better.

Although we cannot actually make our memory as powerful as one with a photographic memory, we can at least improve its processes so that we can recall more names than we usually do. This is especially true with people who are already aging. As we grow older, our memory slips. This is why most of our grandfathers and mothers often forget a lot of things, even our names.

Below are some names on how to make your memory a little bit better. Read on and you might still be able to do something with that faulty memory of yours.

1. Start earlyIt is important to take care of the brain early on to avoid forgetfulness when old age comes. Brain development starts at a very young age, from 0-3 years old. It is during this time when your brain grows the fastest. Although you may not have any power over your parents actions during this time, you can at least add to their care when you are much older, say 6 or 7 years old, by eating the right foods and avoiding as you grow old vices like cigarettes and alcohol which are proven to lessen memory skills.

2. Commit to the improvementYou should at least be able to commit to the task of bettering your memory. You may not realize it but it is not as simple as memorizing a grocery list and practicing your brain with crossword puzzles and memory games; you will also be changing the way you live your life and the food that you eat. Changing your lifestyle and your diet takes a lot of gumption and self-discipline from you. You will not be able to do it if you do not commit wholeheartedly to the task.

3. Practice Use your brain. Whether it is something as simple as reading a book or playing a strategy game like chess, exercising your brain will help keep those neurons awake and working. In fact, studies have shown that those who answer crossword puzzles, read or generally use their brains will less likely become senile or acquire Alzheimer’s Disease. Using your brain will prevent it from being rusty and dusty.

4. Visualize it One of the most common techniques to improve memory is to visualize words and things. You see, the brain sees data as pictures. It will be easily stored and faster to retrieve if it is seen and visualized as one picture than when it is memorized as numbers or words. For instance, if you are trying to memorize a grocery list, you do not memorize the words. You memorize the pictures of the things that you need to buy. That way, when you go to the grocery store, you will remember to buy that item, bettering your memory in the process.

Simply put, if you can count and know your abc’s you can use these tips to improve your memory. We all have the ability to retain separate images in our minds quite easily, and by using this kind of system of combining different elements, the images remain quite distinct from one another. Since they are sequence based with a system we are already familiar with, that of counting, we know we won’t miss anything important.

Check out this FACT: When Albert Einstein died they opened up his head to look at his brain. It was actually smaller than average size! However, he used much more than most people. By practicing these memory “stunts” you will enable yourself to retain larger amounts of information. Being a genius is not so much as being smart or clever, but about seeing how one part of life fits with another part of life. The more you know, the more you can link them together. So let’s start thinking like a genius!

An example of this practice is remembering numbers. Let’s try an easy one 81476. Try to picture each number as a shape or object. (8) how about a snowman. (1) how about a paint brush. (4) how about a sail of a yacht. (7) how about a cliff. (6) maybe a trunk of an elephant. Now create a quick story linking them together. The snowman was using a paintbrush to paint his yacht on a cliff while feeding his pet elephant. While numbers tend to get jumbled in our head this method gives a visual that can be remembered a lot more easily. While this might seem complicated, having a standard shape or object for each number (at all times) will make it simple with practice.

Unfortunately, you can not decide where something goes into your memory – into short term or into long term! In fact, it will ALWAYS go into short term memory first and requires further effort to get it into the long term memory area. It’s like having a filing tray and a filing cabinet. You can only store so much in the filing tray until you need to get it into the cabinet.

It might not be too surprising to note that there is a significant link with good nutrition and a powerful memory. After all. The building blocks of the brain are organic, the electrical signals are produced from the body. The results are that the better you eat the better you are able to perform. It can begin with some minor instance like forgetting the birthday of a colleague at work. Then your friend, and then the birthdays of people really near to you: like your family. Hey! Or even worst your wedding anniversary.After that, it could be that you forget the way to your best friend’s house, or to your favorite restaurant. And then if your memory gets really bad you forget your own keys inside your home.Don’t worry! The thing is everyone suffers from moments of forgetfulness.

Even though, you weren’t probably born with a photographic memory, the good news is there are ways to improve the memory, and it doesn’t matter how old you are you can still do it!

As the body gets older, the neurons in the brain also get older. Some will die while others perform in a more sluggish way than usual. This is why people who are very old have a more confused memory than much younger people.

But hey! As stated above, there are ways to enhance the memory, and here are some ways to do it.Do you use visuals or sounds? What kind of learner are you? Some people use visuals to remember things, others sound. If you are a visual person for example, all you need to do if you are trying to remember a shopping list is to look at the whole list and you will then be able to see in your mind the list. Other people, however, are more into sounds they need to hear the list before they can remember it: they read the list out loud to themselves. If you want to find out which method will work for you, try recalling how you memorize at school. Do you see the words in your mind (visual) or do you read them out loud (sound)?

Make use of associations: the brain needs assistance when it comes to remembering things. The simpler you make the remembering task for the brain the easier it will be for it to remember information. Associating information with things that we already know has been used in memory development for centuries. For example, have you heard of mnemonics?

When memorizing a group of words, we frequently take the first letter of that word and then form a sentence or words from those letters. Associating the word that we are trying to commit to memory with the first letter makes it simpler for the brain to remember.

Try to visualize it: have you ever thought why the expression photographic memory is use for people with a truly outstanding memory? The reason is that people who actually memorize well or have an excellent memory do not see one thing or one bit of information when memorizing. They see a picture of the words in set. For example, a person with a shopping list will typically memorize the items on the list one by one, but people who have studied memory improvement will memorize it in its entirety. They will examine the list and visualize it as a whole until they can see the list in their mind- just as if they were holding it in their hands.

Eat the right foods: a great way to a better memory is to take on a healthier diet. Your diet will have a great influence on your skill to memorize things. Eating wholesome brain foods like fish, milk and tofu will assist your brain to perform better and faster.There are numerous ways to improve the memory, but the most significant thing is to promise yourself that you will improve your memory no matter what.
