Brain Training : Brain Training – You Are Never Too Young Or Too Old For It!

Our brain is a wonderful thing! It does practically everything we need to do in our daily life, including moving our body, reigning the organs and feeling our emotions. It is probably one of the most – or the most – complicated ‘control centers’ existing on this earth. The only down thing: the brain declines slowly as we grow older. Thus making our lives more difficult than need be.

If the brain was to be trained and pampered the way we do our body and skin, we could all live to be a 100 and be as sharp as a razorblade till the final days. Fact is our brain is somewhat neglected until the discomforts of the older age are starting to bother us. Then we are willing to do something about it. Newest player in the field: brain training. But if we would start when we were much younger, then our brain would already be trained and all we had to do when we are getting older is some maintenance work. Therefore you can never be too young to train your brain!

When our brain is going to slip a little, we notice that our body does the same. We tend to forget things easily, get hearing problems without getting deaf, have trouble concentrating, and move somewhat slower than we used to. With a trained brain none of these discomforts are necessary. Training your brain keeps it fit, and a fit brain does the work for you like it always has. It is never too late to start (re)training the brain, because by giving it a work out on a regular base you will get all your capabilities back.

Online companies have found this niche in the market. They have websites full of games that sharpen your brain as if it were a knife. More so than video games, those are merely there for the fun. Not that brain training games are no fun… they just have a double function. Besides, the better companies are constantly testing their games, adjusting them to the newest research on how to work out the brain, and also give the possibility to upgrade in the games. That way the challenge remains and it is the challenge that makes your brain work harder and gets itself in better shape. Some sites may charge you a little fee to get access to all their games and updates, but that would hardly be more than a quarter a day. For that money you can train your whole family, as you are never too young… or too old to train your brain!

Why Brain Training?

The brain needs care just like the body

New scientific research shows that we can improve the health and function of our brains with the right mental workouts. In a study funded by the National Institute of Health, scientists found that memory, reasoning and processing speed can be improved by brain training. Moreover, they found that cognitive improvements persisted for at least five years!

Lumosity Review: Brain Training

Lumosity was established as a scientific approach to brain training. Although there are several websites out there for brain training that claim to be able toimprove your cognitive skills most of them are dodgy, badly designed and poorly setup. It is clear that designing a tool to help you improve your mental abilities is not as easy as creating a java app of a Rubik’s cube. And this is why it is something that should be left to professionals.

More specifically neuroscientists should be behind every such attempt. Doing a quick search online will easily show you that most websites are just not professional enough to be trusted. This is not true for Lumosity. This is a quick review of the website which is indeed a complete brain training system. I will highlight the essential differences between Lumosity and other websites and why you should pick that system instead of any other out there.

Lumosity was established in 2005 by Lumos Labs Inc. in California and the purpose was to provide a way to improve your cognitive abilities at as much of a scientific way as possible.

1. Lumosity has partnered with neuroscientists to utilise their experience in the fields of learning and brain training and development.

This differentiates this website from others that are setup by the average tech and SEO “expert” trying to draw traffic. Constant updates of the content are always run by the team of experts. The researchers that they have partnered with are from Stanford University, UCSF, Harvard and Columbia Universities.

2. Lumosity’s games and exercises are based on the principle of neuroplasticity.

What that means in simple words is that our neurons are able to alter/increasetheir synapses to other neurons and improve our cognitive abilities if we subject them to constant training.

This is in direct contrast to what was previously believed about neurons. That we are born with a certain number of neurons that do not change after that.

3. Lumosity games are entertaining and fun.

Hence this is not a boring experience that you will most likely abandon a few days after you register. And this is the most common problem I have encountered with this kind of brain training websites. The variety of games can be limited in some of them but not in Lumosity. The difficulty of the games changes constantly and new games are added frequently. The users can also test new games and provide their feedback. This way they are cutting down on development costs and they also add variety to the system.

4. Lumosity allows you to track your progress and improvements in performance.

Getting adequate feedback is essential to tasks like this. Comparing your skills to those that you had at the beginning of the program a few months back will give you the sense of achievement. You can track your mental speed and memoryimprovement as well as several other parameters at the dashboard. The “My History” section allows for comparisons across all games.

5. What aspects of brain training should I expect from Lumosity and how much will it cost me in comparison to other systems?

You should certainly see significant improvement in spatial working memory, concentration, visual attention and creativity. Albert Einstein once said creativity is better than knowledge and he was so right! By activating novel pathways in your brain, new neural circuits are created that allow the brain to react to new stimuli regardless of previous experiences.

The cost was another great surprise for me since I had to choose between the free programs out there that had very limited to no value and some very expensive alternatives that were beyond what most of us can afford. Their program is priced reasonably at $ 80 a year which is less than $ 7 a month.

Conclusion: If you need the absolute best in terms of brain training and stimulation this is the only program I would trust. Yes, there are a lot of completely free websites but they are not professionally developed and worth spending your time on.

Brain Training Basics

Brain training refers to activities you can do to help improve your brain health and ultimately improve your cognitive memory and other key brain functions. In order to understand why brain training works you need to understand how your brain functions and grows.

Our brain is an ever evolving organ. If you are using it and feeding it knowledge and stimulation it can continue to grow in capacity and make more connections necessary for critical thinking. If you are not using it then it will become stagnant and you will start to notice that you are not quite as sharp as you used to be.

Your brain with the proper brain training can reorganize itself to meet new challenges and be more efficient. There are many brain training activities you can do to keep your mind sharp and active.

Things that are considered brain training are activities that stimulate your brain. Those activities can include brain exercises, physical activity or learning a new skill. Anything that challenge your brain can make it grow.

Using brain training to get your brain in shape will improve your cognitive memory, help you have better focus and make you a better problem solver in general. Sharp brains react quicker and make the connections they need more efficiently.

The great news about the brain is that there is always ways to improve its performance. The same way a brain will shrink in positive activity when it is not being used. It can also grow in capacity when you are testing its limits with brain training activities.

In addition to doing things that just make you think more there are also scientifically designed computer programs that can give you brain training activities to do.

These are simple activities that you only have to spend a few minutes a day on to get the benefit from. These types of programs give you all the tools you need to set up a brain fitness regimen.

We spend a lot of time figuring out ways to eat healthy and keep our physical bodies in shape. The brain is the single most important organ you have it is the control center for everything else. So we should also spend time thinking about keeping our brains sharp and doing the brain training activities to make that happen.

So get started today figure out some brain training activities that are right for you and incorporate at least a few minutes each day exercising your most important asset.

Ontario, CA (PRWEB) November 07, 2013

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council called for a national system to track sports-related concussions last Wednesday. The sense of urgency came after an IOM report found that no one knows how often the youngest athletes suffer concussions or which sports have the highest rates. It also wasnt clear if better headgear would help. (IOM, Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture, October 30, 2013)

In the past decade more awareness has been given to seriousness of concussions and professional sports associations, such as the NFL, are finally paying attention to the problem. Despite this, the IOM panel found that young athletes still face a culture of resistance to reporting the injury and staying on the sidelines until its healed.

In a press release on October 20, 2013, IOM committee chairman Dr. Robert Graham said, Concussion is an injury that needs to be taken seriously. If an athlete has a torn ACL on the field, you dont expect him to tape it up and play. See More.

According to an article by the Associated Press, reports of sports concussions are on the rise, amid headlines about former professional players who suffered long-term impairment after repeated blows. Wednesdays report said 250,000 people 19 years old and younger were treated in emergency rooms for concussions and other sports- or recreation-related brain injuries in 2009, up from 150,000 in 2001. Its not clear how many concussions and other related brain injuries go undiagnosed. (AP, More study urged on concussions in young athletes, October 31. 2013)

Its a shame that so many of our young people are facing brain injuries at such an early age. Whats worse is that the sports culture tells them they should play through it. They dont realize that playing through can affect their mental stamina for the rest of their life. A concussion can easily cause long-term problems for a child, says Frank N. Darras, Americas top disability lawyer who is a regular expert guest in national broadcast media. Watch here.

The data is clear for high school, collegiate, and professional sports. Concussion rates for male athletes in high school and college are highest for football, ice hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling. For women, its soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. Womens ice hockey also has one of the highest reported concussion rates at the college level.

According to the IOM panel, theres no similar data on concussion rates for younger children who play sports, whether on school teams or in community leagues.

Every state except Mississippi has passed a concussion law following a 13-year-old in Washington who suffered permanent disability after returning to a football game despite a concussion. Yet, its not always easy to spot a concussion and most young athletes play without regular access to a professional trained to spot them. *

Starting in high school, trainers are there at every game. Students and professionals trained in sports medicine are watching for signs of concussions and other injuries. Earlier than that, theres not that protection and the father who volunteered to be your sons PeeWee coach isnt trained yet to recognize the sometimes subtle signs of a concussion. This leaves the youngest among us the most vulnerable. More research is needed to identify trends so we can start taking steps to really protect our kids from concussion disabilities, says Darras.

Brain Training – Why Bother?

Why bother with brain training? Why wouldn’t you bother with brain training? I believe that life is 90% mind set and as a result, if I could only train one thing it would be my brain. Our brain controls all our muscles, organs, it releases chemicals (that have long complex names) that control your feeling, it governs our perception of the world and there for our experience. Really life could even be 100% mindset, let’s stick to 90% for now.

As I have mentioned in my other articles on Life Coaching, Mind development and so on, I’m in life for a feeling, the feeling I enjoy the most is harmony. My definition of harmony is Feeling at peace with who I am being right now and therefore knowing that tomorrow will look after its self. When I am feeling harmony the whole world around benefits as a result. More than just my selfishness of wanting to feel good myself, at the same time want others to feel good and I have found that just like laughter, feelings spread. I would much rather spread harmony, happiness and love than fear anger and frustration.

I have trained my brain in many different ways over the years and I use this article as a medium to share my knowledge and experience to benefit you. I have completed memory courses, studied Christian philosophy, the yogi philosophy which both in their own ways convey ways, means and techniques to bring the mind body and sprit into harmony. And I say it in that order because I think unless your brain is geared in a way that is open and willing to learn and on top that able to process thoughts, feelings and emotions, you will be increasing limited to what you can experience on all levels.

I’d like to be able to say that I have the answer to solve everyones problems, “Here is my 14 step program to be perfect”.

For starters perfect in my opinion is an imagery state of being that humans have created. My approach rather than trying to “fix” people I teach people to be first content with what you have and to use what you have to the best of your ability, whilst being open to grow and learn.

I have spent many years of my life doing carpentry and there is no one tool that I can use to build and entire house. I can’t built an house with a hammer alone or just a saw I require several tools and even then what if someone wants a full brick home then my hammer and saw aren’t needed. When someone wants a full brick home I can choose to learn how to lay bricks or I can call in a brick layer. Either way I will be grateful that I can still do the doors and windows of the house and I will work with the brick layer to learn more about laying bricks because I like learning and increasing my skills. Which I now know is growth and half of the journey of being fulfilled.

One thing I have found that works for the majority of people that have done it for a period time… if you want to feel harmony, content, peaceful, fulfilled or the like give and grow in all area of your life.

A model for training the brain in any area that I have found endlessly useful is what I call the 4 Habit Model

Sub consciously incompetent – I don’t know that what I’m doing that isn’t working
Consciously incompetent – I know that what I’m doing isn’t working
Consciously competent – I now have change and concisely chose to do something that works for me
Sub consciously competent – I do what works for me without even thinking about it

I will give you an example of how I trained my brain with this tool. I decided that I wanted to give more smiles to people, because when people have smiled at me or made an extra effort to make me smile when I’m having a tough day, I really appreciate it, then in return I want to give that experience to others. Let’s apply this to the 4 Habit Model
Sub consciously incompetent – I didn’t know that wasn’t smiling as much as I could.
Consciously incompetent – I knew that I wasn’t smiling as much as I could.
Consciously competent – I now choose consciously to smile at people more often.
Sub consciously competent – I now smile almost all the time without even thinking about it.

I now have created a habit where I smile at almost every body. Does that work HELL YES!! I have increased my happiness because I smile more and smiles release those feel good chemicals. I help others increase their happiness by sharing a smile and then I feel even happier because I have helped brighten someone else’s day. Its good all round. Did this come naturally? No I don’t believe many things do. Let me explain. Most things even like smiling are a learnt habit, we simply forget when we learn it and when do we ever stop to think about it.

In my work as a Life Coach based in sunny Cronulla (Southern Sydney) I help people create the habits that work for them on a sub conscious level. I trust you have enjoyed and learnt something from this article. There are 4 more in this series or if you would like to find out more check out my website.

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) November 05, 2013

The New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA) has come full-circle with its current public outreach initiative by again operating an educational exhibit booth at the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) conference in Rochester, from October 24-26, 2013. NYSATA began their public awareness campaign to promote sports safety and quality healthcare for student-athletes one year ago at the NYSSBA Expo and this year went a step further by adding a general session presentation to their efforts. The Friday, October 25 morning session, entitled, Developing a Return to Academics Protocol following a Concussion included background information about why academic adjustments and psychosocial considerations are essential as part of a comprehensive concussion management plan for athletes and non-athletes alike. Various suggestions and samples were offered to the audience, as well as information on the role of the administrator in the concussion management process and the value an athletic trainer can add.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to present at the NYSSBA convention. As schools adjust to the needs of the concussed student, we are happy to help educate school board members about the various considerations surrounding this important topic and offer our services as Athletic Trainers as resources to developing the appropriate protocol,” says NYSATA President-Elect Aimee Brunelle, MS, ATC, EMT and co-presenter of the NYSATA session. ATs can be pivotal in maintaining a high level of awareness, education, and communication with school nurses, physicians, counselors, teachers, coaches, school administrators, and parents.

The focus on academic considerations following mild traumatic brain injury is undoubtedly important, but also proved extremely timely with the release of a new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study on the same topic just two days after NYSATAs presentation at the NYSSBA conference. Published in the November 2013 edition of their journal, Pediatrics, the article, Returning to Learning Following a Concussion was released online on October 27, 2013. Co-author of the study, Karen McAvoy, PsyD, who is the Director of the Center for Concussion at the Rocky Mountain Youth Sports Medicine Institute (CO), also authored a community-based concussion management program for families, schools and medical professionals called The REAP Project. REAP, which provides a comprehensive concussion management protocol including physical and cognitive aspects, is one program that NYSATA recommends and promotes and was discussed in the NYSSBA conference presentation.

Another thorough Return to Academics Protocol that NYSATA endorses was developed in NYS by the Three Village Central School District and Orthopedic Associates of Long Island. With input from both medical providers and school officials, including teachers and guidance counselors, they developed a comprehensive academic adjustments checklist form as part of their concussion management protocol. The process, which took roughly 20-plus hours over the course of four months, helped overcome terminology barriers between the medical professionals and educational personnel, as well as helped teachers understand the impact of concussions on academics and vice-versa, including cognitive function, classroom environment, and symptom resolution. Jennifer Chimienti, MS, ATC, athletic trainer at Ward-Mellville HS in the Three Village CSD supplied NYSATA with the background information on their thorough and collaborative process.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has also added a Returning to School After a Concussion: A Fact Sheet for School Professionals document to their repertoire of Heads Up concussion materials, for which McAvoy and lead author of the new AAP study, Mark E. Halstead, MD, FAAP are contributors. This is part of their Heads Up to Schools: Know Your Concussion ABCs series, which accompanies similar CDC Heads Up toolkits for Concussion in Youth Sports, High School Sports, and Brain Injury in Your Practice for physicians.

Aside from the extreme interest in academic considerations following a concussion generated by the presentation, another common area of conversation at the exhibit booth was what schools or districts without a certified athletic trainer (AT) do to monitor and manage student-athletes with concussions and other sport-related injuries. New statistics support that just over 60% of schools nationally have access to an AT up about 18% from 2005 but in NYS this number is far fewer than 50% (NATA News Aug./Sept. 2013). In most cases, the school nurse(s) assumed this role within the school, but with national statistics showing that 47% of schools have less than the recommended nurse-to-student ratio (National Association of School Nurses (NASN) 2008 Survey; Youth Sports Safety Alliance (YSSA) stats) and school nurses not being required in NYS, it is unclear how many schools may completely lack in-house medical or healthcare personnel to be at the hub of this process. In contrast to these statistics, two neighboring states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have well over 85-90% of schools with access to an AT.

As we have noted in the past, its becoming more and more evident that athletic trainers and schools, regardless of size, need to work collaboratively to help keep student-athletes safe and healthy, says Kristy Hart, MS, ATC, CSCS, NYSATAs Public Relations chair and NYSSBA co-presenter. Many people are not aware of the various ways to gain access to an athletic trainer and that, besides direct care, ATs can be a valuable resource to help schools create comprehensive injury management plans. Additionally, various sources outside of athletic trainers are beginning to reiterate the sentiments that we have noted for some time: If a school is unable to provide appropriate safety measures for their student-athletes, including a qualified healthcare provider such as an AT and proper sports safety equipment – which is possible in a fiscally reasonable way – then maybe they should reconsider offering collision sports.

In addition to Brunelle, who is the AT at Jamestown Community College, and Hart, who works as a per diem AT in the Rochester area, the NYSATA exhibit booth was manned by Jarett Rhoads, MSEd, ATC, CSCS, of Eastridge High School (East Irondequoit) and Phil Steckley, MS,

Brain Training : Free Brain Training That Really Works

If you’re interested in brain training, the first thing that comes to mind is probably video games like Brain Age or Big Brain Academy, or maybe another online program like Lumosity. In fact, probably every brain training method you can think of is probably some sort of product that will set you back a little money. But the fact of the matter is that brain training could be totally free, and even more effective then the paid solutions out there. Without further ado, I present the Ultimate Guide to Free Brain Training.

The first thing to realize is that there are several areas that play key roles in determining your brain fitness and training your brain. I assume that if you’re reading this guide, you already understand the importance of maintaining your brain health, but you’re probably only aware of a very small scope of the matter. Where brain training games fall short is this: they only work on brain exercise. They completely ignore the other three pillars of brain fitness: physical exercise, managing your stress, and proper nutrition.

Let’s take a look at nutrition first. How do you maximize your diet for brain fitness, without spending extra money? Luckily, there’s nothing to worry about missing by not spending money. Supplements that are claimed to improve your memory or brain functioning just don’t work at all. Both DHEA and Ginkgo biloba supplements are sold as antiaging or brain health supplements, and studies by various scientists show that they have no effects whatsoever. However, Omega-3 fatty acids that are found in cold-water fish do seem to improve brain functions and attention. So without spending extra money on supplements, try eating some mackerel, salmon, tuna, or herring for dinner.

Also important to brain fitness is managing your stress. Too much stress will literally burn you out and decrease your brain’s functioning abilities. One fun and free way to keep stress levels low is to stay clued in to your social network. Call a friend, schedule a date, send a letter to a family member. Physical exercise, which is a pillar of brain training in and of itself, will also help lower your stress levels. Another option would be some simple meditation, it’s an incredible tool.

Physical exercise is also a great area to efficiently train your brain. If you participate in a sport like tennis or soccer, you’ll be working your body whilst thinking intensely about the game at hand. On top of all of that, the exercise naturally reduces your stress. That’s 3 of the 4 areas right there! In reality, any basic exercise is good for your brain fitness, but if you play a sport, then that’s the optimal solution. Be sure that your heart is up in your target workout range for 20 minutes at a minimum to consider it a “workout”, and do it at least 3 times a week.

Finally, let’s talk about brain exercise. You don’t need to spend money on video games or computer software or internet subscriptions to get brain exercise. You could do a simple Google search for “brain teasers” and do those. No matter what salesmen will try to tell you, any simple activity that gets you thinking hard and working your mind is brain exercise. Your brain exercise pillar could be fulfilled simply by being really active in life, reading 20 minutes every night, or dedicating yourself to learning a new topic. Brain exercise does not have to be expensive, it just has to be SOMETHING.

That’s it. That’s all you really need. A substitution or two in your diet, a way to reduce your stress (totally free), some physical exercise (also totally free), and simple brain exercise that could be reading, or brain teasers, or just a really invigorating experience. You can max efficiency in your brain training by meditating or playing a sport, all which cover multiple areas at once. And that’s how you can be training your brain and working on mental fitness, all for free. Goodbye, expensive products.
