Health Diet – Eat to Increase Your Brain Function Resulting in Better Concentration : Brain Foods

Article by Candice McInnes

It is always important to stick to a healthy diet, this will give us a feeling of well-being and increase our energy levels as well. We all know that there are certain foods or drinks that can interfere with our brain function and cause loss of concentration and/or memory, but the real question here though is – are there foods out there that can increase our brain function which will result in better concentration? The answer is a resounding YES! to that question.

A) What are brain foods and how are they used?

The following nutrients are used by the brain:

* carbohydrates – for energy* omega 3 – for formation of cell structure* Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid – these help manufacture and release a chemical [known as neurotransmitters]* vitamin C, E and beta-carotene [rich in antioxidant properties] – protect brain cells from damage due to free-radicals found in environmental pollution

B) Brain Foods to eat and why

1) Spinach – this assists with age related problems [including decline in function] and may lessen damage from strokes and neurological disorders. Spinach also protects the brain from oxidant stress [as a antioxidant]

2) Eggs – containing choline [a component of fat-like molecules] egg yolk is partly responsible for general brain function and health. Choline deficiency is said to contribute to Alzheimers and age related mental declines

3) Sweet potatoes – rich in vitamin B6, C, carbohydrates and beta-carotene this vegetable is pretty important to the functioning of the brain [see A above]

4) Yellow fin tuna – rich in omega 3, vitamin B [known as niacin]. The omega 3 fatty acids help keep the cell membranes flexible, thus maximizing the intake of all the important nutrients needed, while niacin protects against Alzheimers

5) Strawberries – rich in vitamin C, strawberry eaters have better motor skills and a higher learning capacity and their brain is protected in the fact that age-related function decline is reduced

6) Cranberries – improvements in memory, balance and co-ordination have been noted in people consuming this sour berry, this berry also protects the brain from free-radical damage

7) Kidney beans – containing thiamine, needed for synthesizing choline, and inositil which is believed to improve mood disorders

8) Loin of lamb – rich in vitamin B12 [see A above] and iron [iron deficiency can cause problems with concentration and other mental performances]

9) Wheat germ – Rich in vitamin E [see A above] and selenium which are both powerful antioxidants, it also contains choline and magnesium making this food a powerful brain nutrient

There are probably a few brain foods that I have missed but as you can see by what I have jotted down, there are enough brain foods out there to give you the concentration kick you are after.

Stress Will Cause Poor Memory and Loss of Focus And Concentration : Memory Exercises

Article by Leon Edward

It has been scientifically proven that our bodies evolve to respond to stressors by altering the physiology to react the right way to the stressor. However, when we come across a stressor that is symbolic to our bodies the body alters itself the way it did before but may not react the same.

Because of this, we build up what are known as stress products. Instead of using these stress products we “grin and bear it”, so to speak. Doing this can result in many different types of illnesses and diseases when we do not deal with stressors in a healthy manner or the stress reaction is chronic.

In fact, medical research has proven that people who always seem to be anxious and stressed out produce stress hormones. Stress hormones such as cortisol can have harmful effects on the brain cells. Therefore you should make it a priority everyday to take time for yourself and relax.

It doesn’t matter what you do to relax just find something you enjoy doing that will take all your stress and let it fade away. Did you know that a poor memory is often the result of having a poor self image? It’s true, which means in order to keep you mind healthy you need to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to.

It is very important to take care of your brain and heart, which can be done by having good blood circulation. Cardiovascular workouts like walking are great ways of getting you blood pumping and helping your brain produce new cells. If walking bores you, try other cardiovascular workouts like some sports or jogging.

Did you know that exercising can lessen your chance of having a problem with high blood pressure? This is true and having high blood pressure can also lead to memory loss when you get older. This means you need to get up off the couch and get some exercise. Exercise can help you by not only keeping you fit but also sharpening you memory.

Exercising you mind is another important thing to do to keep it from having problems later on in life. You can do this by playing games that make you think or watching, reading, or listening to something educational. You also need to make it a point to learn new things and have new experiences often.

If you feel that you have taken good care of your brain and you still are having problems with memory loss it is time to go see your doctor. Memory loss can be a symptom of more serious health problems that can go on for years without ever being noticed. The only thing that does not go unnoticed is the memory loss.

Unfortunately, everyone has to deal with stress and anxiety breaking their concentration on the things that are important. It happens to everyone, which means that you are not alone. Everyone needs to learn to deal with their stress and anxiety to continue to live long, healthy lives and have healthy brains.

Short-term stress can be helpful when a person really needs to concentrate the hardest. For example, when you have a deadline on a project for school or work that is coming up quick you can work hard and fast to get it finished on time. However, it is almost the exact opposite when it comes to long-term stress.

This is because your body starts putting more chemicals into the brain like adrenaline to keep you moving and others to help you focus. While at first this can be a good thing you can really begin to have problems if it is long term. Then you end up in this harmful cycle telling yourself you have to finish it and you need to concentrate.

Therefore, instead of pushing yourself you need to stop and take a break. Relax for a bit and stop trying so hard. You know that you need to get your project done by a certain time by if you can’t get it finished because you are stressed out and pushing yourself its not going to do you any good.

The Attention Deficit Epidemic : Brain Vitamin

Article by Fresh Earth

The Attention Deficit Epidemic

Human beings are master learners – one of our definitive traits. The brain is made of specialised nerve cells, called neurones, that communicate with each other to form the process of thought itself. The brain is constantly restructuring itself and learning by forming new nerve pathways. A healthy new-born baby will form over half its learning pathways between ages one and five years. The number of nerve cells do not increase after age two, but the number of connections do. At birth a child can connect to 2500 other neurones. By age 2-3 years a child can connect to 15000 neurones.

Learning is one of the greatest and most exciting potentials we have to fulfil. But sadly our capacity to learn is being threatened. This is evident in the ever-increasing incidence of childhood learning disabilities seen today, from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to autism. Statistics from the UK show that one in three children in every classroom is diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Lancet estimate that eight to ten percent of children suffer from this condition. Boys are more prone to ADHD than girls, with a ratio of 10:1 boy to girl sufferers.

ADHD does not usually affect IQ or intelligence and individuals can be highly creative and can sit for long periods completing projects that are of interest to them. Onset is usually by the age of 3, although diagnosis is usually later when the child is in school. ADHD can occur in adulthood as well.

Symptoms of ADHD (one or more may be present):

HyperactivityRisk-taking behaviourRestlessnessReduced concentration & distractibilityShort attention spanAggressivenessImpulsivity (action before thought, abrupt changes in activities, jumping up in class)Reduced coordination and accident prone behaviourSelf-destructive behaviourTemper tantrums and impatienceLow stress tolerance & emotional instabilityDisruptiveness in the classroomExcessive talkingProblems adapting to change/new thingsMemory and thought problems – often losing things.

Causes

Although the cause or causes of ADHD have not been fully established, many theories have been postulated. Recent research has identified that ADHD is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain’s neurotransmitters, with dopamine being low in ADHD sufferers. The reasons for this chemical imbalance are varied.

Conventional Treatment

Conventional treatment does not address the underlying cause of ADHD but merely masks the symptoms by prescribing brain-stimulating drugs. Ritalin, an amphetamine-type drug, is the most commonly prescribed anti hyperactivity drug. It has been classified as a class II drug (alongside cocaine and methadone) by the US Drug Enforcement Agency. Ritalin works by stimulating the production of the brain neurotransmitter, dopamine. Dopamine helps to focus attention and concentration. The long-term effects of Ritalin have not yet been established. Numerous side-effects have been identified with Ritalin. It should not be stopped suddenly, since severe withdrawal reactions can occur (e.g. depression). Supervision during withdrawal is also needed. Ritalin should not be administered to children less than six years of age.

The role of nutrients in mental health

The nutritional approach to ADHD works on the basis that dietary changes influence brain chemistry. Certain nutrients are required to make and maintain the brain itself. Deficiencies of these nutrients at any time can have repercussions on intelligence, learning potential and behaviour.

The key nutrients required to feed the brain are:

Essential fatty acids found in oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines), nuts and seeds, are vital for brain function. These essential fats form part of the myelin sheath, a layer surrounding all neurones, and enable one neurone to communicate with another.

Protein (found in for example salmon, nuts, seeds, beans and lentils, eggs, tofu, quinoa, yoghurt) is important for the formation of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers of the brain.

Vitamins and minerals function to keep the brain in tune. The B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and zinc are some of important vitamins and minerals needed by the brain.Phospholipids from eggs and lecithin granules help with brain memory.

The main brain pollutants that hinder brain function are:

Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, copper and aluminium.Trans and hydrogenated fats found in fried foods and foods containing margarine or shortening.Preservatives and additives from processed foods.Food and chemical sensitivities (milk and wheat being the most common)Blood sugar imbalances – hyperactivity is often the result of a sudden burst of sugar. The brain feeds on sugar and low blood sugar can also result in lack of concentration.

There is a strong connection between poor gastro-intestinal function and adverse brain symptoms. Gastro-intestinal tract conditions, such as intestinal permeability, food intolerance, undigested food particles and chemicals, imbalances in gut bacteria and yeast infection, can have a profound negative effect on brain function. The term GAP (gut and psychology) syndrome, has been used to describe this link. Assessing gastro-intestinal function is an important aspect of treating ADHD nutritionally.

Functional Tests

Various tests are useful tools in identifying possible causes and contributing factors to ADHD. The nutritionist may use one or more of the following:

Hair Mineral Analysis – for identifying heavy metal toxicity and nutrient imbalances.Food Allergy or Food Intolerance Testing.CDSA – Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis – for identifying if there are any pathogenic bacteria/fungus or organisms are present.

Nutritional treatment has proven very helpful for many children with ADD or ADHD. It has few, if any, side effects and is therefore worth pursuing before considering other more harmful interventions.

There are also many people who have dietary restrictions due to religious, medical, or personal beliefs and do not get the proper nutrition from the food they eat. When maintaining a balanced diet becomes hard to do for any reason, multivitamins can play an important role to supplement it.

Antioxidants help clean up the brain and contain cell protecting properties. They also may play a part in preventing disease, while at the same time, promoting the growth of healthy brain cells. Foods high in antioxidants can dramatically reverse memory loss, restore motor coordination and balance and include raisins, apples, grapes, cherries, prunes, spinach, blueberries, garlic cooked kale, cranberries, strawberries and raspberries. Acai berries contain more antioxidants than any other berries. In addition to antioxidants, they contain omega fatty acids and are very high in protein.

Essential fatty acids promote normal growth and development. They also contain anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to stroke prevention, and help to improve blood circulation, lift mood, and prevent depression.

B vitamins are also important for proper brain health. Vitamin B6, which are found in bananas, beef, broccoli, organ meats, pork, spinach, and veal are needed to balance brain chemistry. It does this by helping in the creation of all amino acid neurotransmitters, including serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine.

Vitamin B12 contributes to DNA synthesis and the conduction of red blood cells and nerve cells. Deficiency over time may cause depression and impaired mental function. It can be found in breakfast cereals, legumes and legume products, shell fish, and poultry.

Complex carbohydrates are also good because they are needed for the body to survive. Good sources of complex carbohydrates are peanuts, dried apricots, yogurt, oat bran, and sourdough bread. Increasing vinegar and lemon juice consumption with carbohydrates help to suppress a sharp rise in blood sugar.

Selenium is a mineral found in grains, garlic, meat, Brazil nuts, and seafood such as oysters, swordfish, and tuna. Studies have shown that participants that have taken selenium supplements felt clearheaded, elated, confident, and energetic.

Vitamin E helps with blood circulation. The better the blood circulation is to the brain, the better the brain will function. Foods rich in vitamin E are vegetable oils, nuts, and green leafy vegetables.
