No matter what you do for a living, whether you’re self-employed or working a 9-5 job, there is one universal truth in business – you must keep learning and honing your skills in order to get ahead and stay competitive in the marketplace. This fact has only become more evident with the current state of our economy.

Job security no longer exists. The employees that survive the layoffs must adapt and learn new techniques in order to stay on the payroll. Those who are unemployed have even more pressure placed on them to develop more marketable skills, and to do so very quickly.

Professor Wilder Penfield was performing medical procedures on epileptic patients. While his patients were under local anesthesia, he was examining their brain tissue. Imagine his surprise when, while touching certain cells, his patients were suddenly recalling things from their past.

Even more surprising, the patients weren’t just recalling the events, they were reliving them – the sights, the sounds, the smells, the feelings- everything! And it wasn’t just recent events. Many of the memories were from when the patients were just young children.

The Professor theorized that within the brain cells of each individual lies a perfect memory of every past experience in our life. Which means, if you can tap into that ability, then any information you learn will be readily available to you in the future. It also means it doesn’t have to take weeks or months to understand something new, it can be done in hours.

When you realize the substantial amount of information our brain has, and the amazing ability it has to retain and store data, it only becomes a matter of how you tap into that ability, not whether it exists inside of you.

These scientific findings had huge implications. Based on the results, a groundbreaking new technique for speed learning was developed. The techniques have been tested thoroughly and have started to become more mainstream. ScienceDaily published a recent article discussing a nutritional study from Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Brain foods: the effects of nutrients on brain function. This study was focused on how food and exercise affects the brain, going so far as to say they can stave off mental disorders.

According to the study, UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, has spent years studying the affects that food, exercise and sleep have on the brain. Considering how we tend to feel after eating too much, sleeping too little or falling out of shape, Gomez-Pinilla’s interest in this makes sense.

He found that omega-3 fatty acids helped to improve memory, learning and protected against depression, mood disorders and even dementia. While you can find omega-3 in pill form, the scientists state that you will receive more benefits from actual food that contains this valuable nutrient. Some of these foods include flax seed, salmon, walnuts and squash.

Omega-3 fatty acids help with the plasticity of your synapses – and considering the damage that is done to these vital parts of the brain by a TBI, this study may be worth paying attention to. We’ve already discussed how a brain injury often worsens with time and can lead to dementia, but with active preventative measures such as an improved diet and increased exercise, you may be able to help prevent or stall this deterioration.

Gomex-Pinilla said that “The brain and the body are deficient in the machinery to make DHA; it has to come through our diet.” The DHA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid, and is in foods such as salmon.

An interesting addition to this is the suggestion that a lower calorie diet may also help with the brain’s overall health. Too many calories can increase cell vulnerability to free radical damage and also decrease the flexibility of your synapses, leading to memory and learning problems.

Another especially beneficial supplement is folic acid. It has been proven to help with the effects of antidepressants and to prevent the mental decline that comes with aging. If it helps with aging…perhaps it will benefit a damaged brain?

Our lesson from this study seems to be smaller portions with higher nutrient values. Not always the easiest shift to make in our fast food oriented society, but one worth making if you value your mental health!

Another method to increase brain power involves exercise. It has been proven that exercise releases endorphins, which are the chemicals your body produces to refresh and re-energize the body. You do not have to go for a full workout to release endorphins, as a simple walk or light jog will do. Just make sure to exercise regularly.

The brain is also our memory store, and you should try to memorize and recall from memory as often as possible. It’s a good idea to start with your friends phone numbers. Rather than looking them up from your address book, or speed dialing, try to always recall their numbers. In addition, read books on various topics, unrelated to your current field, and also watch informative television programs. Try to think analytically and systematically about these, and think about different ways of achieving what you’ve watched or read.

Finally, learn to relax. Our world is very fast paced and stressful, and we hardly have time to really relax. Meditation is a great way to relax the brain.
