No matter what you do for a living, whether you’re self-employed or working a 9-5 job, there is one universal truth in business – you must keep learning and honing your skills in order to get ahead and stay competitive in the marketplace. Professor Wilder Penfield was performing medical procedures on epileptic patients. While his patients were under local anesthesia, he was examining their brain tissue. Imagine his surprise when, while touching certain cells, his patients were suddenly recalling things from their past.

Even more surprising, the patients weren’t just recalling the events, they were reliving them – the sights, the sounds, the smells, the feelings- everything! And it wasn’t just recent events. Many of the memories were from when the patients were just young children.

The Professor theorized that within the brain cells of each individual lies a perfect memory of every past experience in our life. Which means, if you can tap into that ability, then any information you learn will be readily available to you in the future. It also means it doesn’t have to take weeks or months to understand something new, it can be done in hours.

When you realize the substantial amount of information our brain has, and the amazing ability it has to retain and store data, it only becomes a matter of how you tap into that ability, not whether it exists inside of you.

These scientific findings had huge implications. Based on the results, a groundbreaking new technique for speed learning was developed. Why has it taken over 40 years to discover how to improve IQ? : Memory Exercises

Back in the 1950s, Professor Jensen – a leading authority on intelligence – concluded that nothing could be done to improve our IQ level – that it was fixed from early childhood. This was the scientific consensus. Numerous studies investigating the effect of different types of cognitive training over the past 40 years have not done much to change this view – that is, until 2008 when a team of cognitive psychologists from Bern, Switzerland and Michigan, United States, demonstrated that a very specific type of cognitive training can improve IQ dramatically.

Why has it taken 40 years to discover how to improve IQ?

It is only thanks to recent insights from cognitive psychology about the nature of short term memory and its importance in cognitive functioning have at last enabled a training exercise to be engineered that improves IQ. As cognitive psychologists, we have now uncovered many underlying information processing systems of intelligence. It is this understanding that has enabled us to design the task to be effective to improve intelligence, regardless of starting IQ level. We will now look at how these mechanisms work.

We can improve IQ, but how does it work?

Our short term memory is a big part of the story. We use our short term memory all the time for any storage of information that is short term – perhaps over a matter of 10 or 20 seconds – for example, while remembering directions have have just heard while driving.

The Magical Number 7

The amount of information most people can hold in short term memory (numbers, food items, directions) is limited to around 7 items – plus or minus 2. This short term memory capacity or ‘memory span’ has been called the ‘magical number seven’ in one of the most famous papers in cognitive psychology, by George Miller at Princeton University.

Working memory

But more important than just remembering information by rote is being able to do mental operations on that information – to solve a problem, to figure something out, or reason through something to find an answer. For instance, while figuring out a 15% tip, or how much currency is worth while you are in another country. The ability to hold information in mind for brief periods, and manipulate it mentally is a type of short term memory called working memory. You have to do mental work on the information, not just store it. That is why it is called ‘working memory’.

The capacity of working memory

Most people have a working memory capacity of about 2 or 3 – much less than the memory span of the ‘magical number 7’ for just storing information without doing any cognitive operations on it.

The working memory-IQ link

People vary widely in their working memory capacity. İt is now known that these differences predict IQ level. General intelligence – measured by standardized IQ tests – depends on working memory because working memory affects a wide range of complex cognitive tasks besides figuring out a tip, involving reasoning problem solving, and making sense of things. We use working memory every single time we reason, plan and problem solve. Even comprehending long sentences (like the ones in this article) requires working memory!

Working memory and the intelligence behind our IQ level both share the same brain circuitry – part of the frontal cortex of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. (‘Dorsal’ means up, and ‘lateral’ means to the side – hence ‘dorsolateral’). This is one of the most recently evolved parts of the brain.

How to improve IQ – the logic

The logic is simple: If you can improve your working memory capacity by training it directly, you can therefore improve your intelligence level. There is, in technical terms, a ‘transfer effect’ from working memory training to gains in intelligence and IQ.

Intelligence can now be improved by 40% – as a side effect.

In 2008 cognitive psychologists at the University of Bern in Switzerland and the University of Michigan in the States, demonstrated that by training on a specifically designed working memory exercise you can increase working memory capacity by over 65% over just 19 days of training.

This improvement in this type of short term memory capacity had a remarkable side effect: a 40% gain in intelligence – as measured by a version of the time limited Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices IQ test – one of the most valid and highly regarded IQ tests for culture fair intelligence.

The question “How to get over my ex girlfriend?” is a question asked by all straight men at least once in their lives and to the seeker of the answer, it can prove to be quite elusive. Your first break up of your first meaningful relationship is the most difficult to deal with, it is unlike any pain you ever felt before and it isn’t something you can get used to. You learn to deal with break ups a little better as you experience them more, but again, it isn’t something you can get used to.

They say that break ups are as traumatic as losing someone you love by death, but we have to put things in perspective, it is the pain that is on par with death and not the reality. Every day people have to deal with tragedies that can’t be undone no matter what they do. But in your case, no matter how painful the break up might have been, the fact remains that you haven’t lost anything that can’t be taken back.

I know for a fact that you can be happy with or without your ex girlfriend and I also know for a fact that you can fall in love again with someone new. We are designed in a way so that we forget things and this is a good thing for the most part. Imagine if you had a photographic memory of all the unpleasant things that has happened to you in your life. Could you ever forgive someone for a wrongdoing? Could you ever stop grieving for someone? We never completely forget about something, but time is like an anesthetic to our memory, it numbs all our memories down. So in order to continue being happy we keep making new memories with the people we love and when we stop making new experiences with someone in particular, that person slowly but surely becomes a dusty archive in our memory.

You have to understand that pain, happiness, sadness, hatred, and all range of emotions peak at some point. Chances are that your pain has peaked already and you are just looking for a soft landing. The best thing to do in your situation is of course to keep yourself occupied with something entertaining or maybe even productive. I know your mind is telling you to stay home and to be alone, but I promise you that you will feel so much better if you surround yourself with the people that care about you.

If you feel like taking a little chance, I would also advise you to start dating again. I don’t want you to look for a serious and long-term relationship. I just want you to have a little fun by meeting new people and to re-acquaintance yourself to the excitement of starting anew. For one night don’t think about your ex girlfriend and just imagine you are having a good time with a friend. This will help you look towards the future rather look back for a past that’s long gone.

Whatever you decide to do, just remember that you don’t have to commit to anything or anyone, and you no longer have to factor in your ex girlfriend to come to a decision. The end is the beginning of something new and with that knowledge you’ll never be lost.

Boost Your Brain Power And Memory Over 40! : Brain Power

Frequently my over-40 patients start getting a little anxious when they begin experiencing “brain fog” and forgetting some things like a name, where they put their keys, appointments, if they took their medications, etc. They fear these lapses may be symptoms of Alzheimer or some other brain-disease.

I assure them that, about 95% of the time, most of these memory episodes are not due to some serious brain process. Rather, they are likely due to just the usual memory and cognition (ability to perceive and interpret) changes that start around age 40.

My patients are often surprised, and more hopeful, when I tell them that many of these changes are not permanent and may indicate just fatigue, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or even cognitive “boredom”, meaning your brain is not getting enough stimulation! In fact, you can do a lot to boost brain power and memory and in this newsletter, I’d like to recommend some easy things that will help you do that.

Your Brain: A Complex Data Base

Our brains store an incredible amount of data in them through three types of memory:

Short term/temporary – stores things like a phone numbers, addresses or where you put your keys. As your brain gets older, you may have to write down or repeat numbers to recall them. Putting your keys in the same place will also help. –Long-term recent – type of memory most affected by aging, holds info like someone’s name you just met, what you did several days ago. Inability to recall names is common.

Long-term remote – memory that stores much older data from your childhood, or what you did on a historical date, is not affected by aging as much. You’ll likely remember what color your childhood bike was than the color of the shirt you wore two days ago!

Boost It Don’t Lose It!

Now, what can you do to boost these three areas of your memory? Here’s what I recommend to my patients:

Diet/Nutrition: You’ve heard that fish is “brain food”, that’s because it contains Omega-3 oils that repair worn out brain cells and preserves all your memory areas. Your brain (and the rest of you) thrives on proteins. Limit simple sugars in your diet. Your brain (and the rest of you) functions better making its own glucose from complex carbohydrates and proteins.

Oxygen Power: Your brain needs oxygen to thrive. Working in a stuffy office or house all day can zap your brain power. I tell my patients to open their windows and take several deep breaths when they wake up in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. If possible, go for a walk, exercise, work, or play outside in the fresh air for a few hours, weather permitting.

Exercise: Aerobic exercise 3-4 times a week (running, walking, bicycling, swimming, treadmill, elliptical, dance aerobics, etc) in tandem with muscle strengthening exercise like weight-lifting, kettle bell workouts, yoga, help deliver oxygen to all the tissues of your body including your brain. In addition, it creates feel-good hormones in your brain that helps clear brain fog and depression.

Recharge With Sleep: Getting enough sleep is like plugging your brain into a recharger. Nothing zaps your short term memory and creates brain fog more than not sleeping enough. Your brain and other parts of your body repair itself during sleep. Eat a high protein, 0 sugar, snack like turkey or tuna before going to sleep to help your body release growth hormone, the master repair hormone. Sugary snacks, especially 2 hours prior to sleep, turn off its release.

Stimulate Your Brain: Do crossword puzzles, play card games, chess, any type of game that requires memory recall and/or critical thinking will stimulate both your short term and long term recent memory to stay sharp. Break your patterns by changing things up. For example take a new way to work, use your opposite hand to do tasks, build a birdhouse, take up painting, or learn a language! Your brain thrives on learning and slows without stimulation.

Avoid Substance Abuse: Research has shown that smokers and alcohol drinkers develop dementia more than nonsmokers. Alcohol kills brain cells that do not recover. Avoid Neurotoxins: Exposure to toxic chemicals like spray paints, some glues, environmental chemicals, pesticides, can all cause neurologic damage especially without good ventilation.

Avoid Aspartame: Sold as Equal, Nutra-Sweet, Spoonful, now renamed as “Neotame”, aspartame is an “excitotoxin” that creates all kinds of neurologic havoc, including memory loss, irritability/rage, damage to developing fetus nervous systems, etc. New research shows that diet sodas are linked to strokes, but do not state why. It could be the aspartame in certain diet sodas (Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Pepsi) that is the cause and not that it is sugar-free.

Memory Robbing Drugs: Many prescription drugs can cause memory loss. If you feel your medications may be contributing to your memory problems, talk to your doctor, or your pharmacist, and ask him to look into whether memory loss could be a side effect.

Brain/Memory Boosting Supplements: B vitamins, especially folic acid, B6, B12, are crucial to good brain health. As we get older, we don’t absorb B12 from our intestine and most everyone gets deficiencies making it a crucial vitamin to supplement. Other brain cognition and memory boosters that you can supplement with are phosphatidylcholine, DMAE, phosphatidyl inositine, acetyl-L carnitine, phosphatidyle serine, vinpocetine, and huperzine.

Getting older doesn’t have to be fraught with anxiety of forgetting everything and everyone you know. Stay away from neurotoxins, eat a healthy diet full of brain-memory preserving nutrition, make use of the brain-boosting supplements available, exercise and keep challenging yourself to do and learn new things. Vitamins : Holistic Medicine Secrets: Discover Two Essential Vitamins For Anyone Over 50

The health and medical communities have long acknowledged the benefits of a daily multi-vitamin, particularly for those over the age of 50. Even Medicare has noted decreased costs in caring for patients who take daily multi-vitamins.

As we grow older, the absorption and digestion of proteins and minerals becomes more difficult leading to a variety of ailments such as osteoporosis, fatigue, and chronic illness.

We can go a long way towards addressing these concerns by seeking out a few basic nutrients and nutritional supplements. Two vitamins that are essential for anyone over 50 include vitamin B-12 and vitamin D.

Vitamin B-12: Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutritional supplement for those over 50. Insufficient vitamin B-12 levels can lead to fatigue, brain fog, and a higher risk of heart disease.

Vitamin B-12 is particularly hard to absorb as we age, because we lack the biochemical called intrinsic factor. Because vitamin B-12 is difficult for the stomach to absorb, try taking it sublingually (as a lozenge, or as drops under the tongue) so that it can be absorbed through the mouth.

There are several types of vitamin B-12. The most common type, cyanocobalamin, is the least desirable because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Instead, look for methylcobalamin or hydroxycobalamin.

You might pick up a high quality vitamin B complex to take along with the vitamin B-12 to achieve a proper balance. A reasonable daily dose for vitamin B-12 is 500 micrograms (not milligrams). Vitamin B-12 is water soluble, so it is extremely unlikely that you will overdose on this vitamin.Vitamin D: Vitamin D is another essential nutritional supplement. Women who have optimal levels of vitamin D have approximately 50% decreased chance of breast cancer.

Studies have shown that most of the population living north of San Francisco is vitamin D deficient. If you live near the equator, then you can get enough vitamin D by going outside.

If you live in the north, you cannot get sufficient vitamin D from being in the sun during the winter months. During the summer months you can get enough vitamin D from 20 minutes per day of sun exposure between the hours of 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Taking 2000 IU’s of vitamin D 3 per day is reasonable.

Alternatively, you may take cod liver oil daily. Be sure to find quality oil free of toxins. A highly recommended brand is Carlson Norwegian Cod Liver Oil.

Vitamin D toxicity has been a concern because it is a fat soluble vitamin. However, vitamin D toxicity is extremely rare. No cases have been documented of vitamin D toxicity from a daily dosage of 2000 IU’s and not even from 4000 IU’s per day.
