I can remember memory exercises and assignments all the way back to second grade, and they always involved drudgery and tedium, like memorizing and reciting the Gettysburg address, and making faces at the kid reciting to try and make them lose their place.

I actually did that and feel some embarrassment at this moment as I remember that.

And now I am noticing that I am having issues with word recall, which tells me that my brain is now 62 years old, and my brain is earning its living recalling words and using them in counseling sessions, and I am worried that I am going to have to return to those tedious memory exercises from my childhood to keep my professional vocabulary.

However, I do hear the cavalry trumpet sounding not too far away, and I do believe that I can do memory exercises which reflect recent discoveries about the human brain and recent technological developments.

So here is what I have learned. We grow new brain cells every day, which is called neurogenesis, and those brain cells migrate to the hippocampus, which is a very important part of the memory process in the human brain, and we are making lots of discoveries about neuroplasticity, which is the capacity of neurons to form new connections when they are presented with novel learning experiences, sometimes within minutes of the learning experience.

Neurogenesis is a new discovery, perhaps a decade old.

The good news is that both neurogenesis and neuroplasticity can be encouraged, which impacts memory, and influences memory exercises, by taking care of the pillars of brain fitness.

The Pillars of Brain Fitness?

It turns out that the best memory exercise that we can do is what Simon Evans,Ph.D.

and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. tell us to do in their wonderful e-book Brainfit for Life.

We need to commit regular time to our brain fitness, which means that we take care of what the experts in the brain and memory exercise fields are calling the pillars of brain fitness.

When we do that, we are whipping the brain into its best shape for neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, which are the keys to a longer memory, or a quicker memory, certainly a brain that is ready to use any of the traditional memory exercise tools like associative images.

So what are the pillars of brain fitness? Physical activity/exercise, nutrition including lots of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids, stress management, good sleep, which is the time of day when memory consolidation happens, and novel learning experiences, which might include the use of the new computerized brain fitness programs.

The novel learning experience that the brain requires for enhanced neurogenesis and neuroplasticity is the novel learning experience that we usually get when learning a new language or new musical instrument, because that kind of learning exposes the brain to increased complexity and provides an opportunity for the appropriate amount of positive feedback (correct answers) for strong circuits to form.

Evans and Burghardt go into some detail about research on the dual n back task and how practice on the dual n back increases neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, so I found a program to use based on the dual n back task, and discovered in about three minutes that my attentional style when it comes to memory and brain fitness exercise is of the wandering kind, which makes it hard for my brain to form short term and then move short term memory to long term.

I highly recommend the dual n back task to anyone seeking increased brain fitness, or a highly effective memory exercise.

It is fun, frustrating, and addictive. Once you get a handle for how the program works, and get some improvement, you will be amazed at how this attention and memory exercise impacts your ability to remember stuff.

Photographic Memory : Photo Scanning – The Best Way to Preserve Your Prized Photographs!

You go looking for your old photographs stored in a shoebox in the attic and what do you find? Prized photos glued together. Prying them apart will destroy the images and you’d have lost your photographic memories for good.

So how do you prevent your photos from curling with mold and bonding together from damp? You could do photo scanning! Using a Scanner

The best format to save your scanned photo in is a jpg format. The scanned photo is compressed so that the file size becomes smaller. However, the jpg format is ideal for most of your photo scanning requirements as its easy to work with and quick to download.

As slides and negatives will deteriorate over time, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to view your slides and develop photos from negatives after several years of neglect. So your best bet to maintain an accurate photographic record of your family history is to have your slides and negatives scanned to digital format.

Scanning Services

If you can’t scan your photos yourself, use scanning services which charge a fee. Don’t scan at a higher resolution than 300dpi. You don’t need much higher than that unless your require very high quality print images of your photos. Generally, 300 dpi is the best choice for photo scanning. You’ll have to pay a higher rate for 600 – 1200 dpi and the file sizes will also be larger. That means you’re going to use up quite a bit of hard drive if you’ve got plenty of photos to scan. They will also load slower when you upload them to your web photo folder or send them to your friends as an email attachment.

Photo scanning is the ideal method to preserve your prized photographs from deteriorating. You don’t have to worry about your photos fading, gluing together or getting burnt to a crisp and lost forever if you’ve got a scanned copy. Photographic Memory : Memory Card Error? Top 3 Tips to Prevent Memory Card Issues in Your Camera

If you are a photographer, memory cards are most likely the devices that hold the key to storing your treasured memories. If you know how to take care of this “key”, your lockbox of memories are safe. If not, you may be gambling with your memories.

A few things to remember about memory cards. Although there are no moving parts in the standard card there still are a few things that can be done to extend their life.

1) Format your card regularly and always do so while it is in your camera, not when it is connected to your computer. In fact, not only should you not format your card using your computer, but you should not even delete individual files. The problem with erasing or formatting cards on your computer instead of in your camera has to do with the ways in which these tasks are performed by the two and how the two ways are often incompatible.

By regularly formatting your memory card in your camera you can avoid memory variables and lost clusters. Formatting in the camera also helps to be sure that if a card is used in multiple cameras there are not any lost images or folders saved in one camera that cannot be read by the current camera. There could be times when the total available space to store your images is not accurate, due to folders or images saved from use in multiple camera.

2) Removing your memory card from your camera: It is very important to remember to always turn your camera off before removing or inserting a card. When your camera is turned on and your card is inserted the two are connected, passing information and in some cases electrical power. Pulling out your memory card can literally cause things to go haywire, often corrupting the card and making it unusable. Make sure that all the images in your cameras buffer have been saved to your card. Turn the camera off and then you can safely remove your memory card.

3)Removing your memory card from your computer: If you are using card sockets in your computer or are using an auxiliary memory card reader via a USB port, you should always use your computer’s functions to power down your card reader or USB device to safely remove the memory card or card reader. It makes no difference if you are using a Windows based system or an Apple Computer. Be sure to follow the proper procedure to power down or eject your memory card or card reader to avoid any damage to your memory card or the files contained on it.

Grouping of similar things that you want to remember – Multiple and random items can be especially difficult to remember. To improve your memory function, group or categorize items that fit together. For example try and group the produce, vegetables, household items separately so that you better remember your shopping list. Organize your life – Keep items that you use daily in one set place so you are not constantly looking for them everywhere. Use electronic organizers or daily planners to keep track of appointments, due dates for bills etc. Keep phone numbers and addresses separately in an address book, computer or cell phone so that they are always handy.
