Example, if you are given a list of: cat, skirt and banana, try to create an image whereby there is a cat wearing a skirt trying to eat a banana. If there are plenty more items to add to the list, then just continue to link these items to the initial image. Lastly, just remember to link the last item back to the first item. Do explore newer methods of remember long twinning information.

Let us not forget that the most common method is the ability to keep up with a healthy diet at all times. Prevention of Memory Loss also Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease : Memory Exercises

Article by Susan Nickerson

It’s a startling fact that more than 5 million people in the U.S. suffer from memory loss. And it’s estimated that about 20% of the 78 million members of the now-graying baby boomer generation could develop heart-breaking and irreversible Alzheimer’s disease.

The good news is that the prevention of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease are within your grasp. Through lifestyle changes and anti-aging techniques, it’s possible to actually increase your mental abilities — and maintain them well into your seventh and eight decades.

Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., President and Medical Director of the non-profit Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, has studied this dreaded disease for two decades. Dr. Dharma believes the best defense against Alzheimer’s disease is to prevent it in the first place.

He has developed a 4-pronged approach to the prevention of deterioration of memory function. Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona has endorsed his work, and The Alzheimer’s Association, the Mayo Clinic and UCLA have developed similar programs.

Dr. Dharma’s integrative, holistic medical program for the delay and prevention of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease involves diet and nutritional supplements, physical and mental exercise, stress and relaxation, and the use of prescribed pharmaceuticals.

Diet and Supplements

Diet directly affects the health of your body, but also your brain. A healthy diet is one that should include fresh fruits and vegetables, be low in trans-fats and saturated fats, high in protein gained mostly from vegetables instead of animal protein. It should have the right amounts of the “good” fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, and complex carbohydrates.

In addition, a high-potency multi-vitamin should be taken daily. And supplements of antioxidants and memory-enhancing vitamins and nutrients, like vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10, acetyl-l-carnitine, ginkgo biloba and phosphatidyl serine, may be beneficial as well.

Avoid the use of tobacco and the excessive consumption of alcohol. Also, get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause confusion and memory problems, as does being tired.

Physical and Mental Exercise

Exercise plays an important part in any health-promoting routine. Make it a goal to include physical activity in your schedule at least three or four times a week for one hour. Walk, ride a bicycle, jog, or join an exercise class.

In addition to your cardiovascular exercise, it’s important to also do mental exercises, or what Dr. Dharma calls “brain aerobics.” Spending at least twenty minutes three times a week doing mental exercise will stimulate your brain, helping to keep it functioning as it should through the years, and also sharpen your cognitive skills. You can exercise your brain in many ways, including playing stimulating board games, doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, reading a book, learning a new song, or playing a musical instrument.

Of course, the best exercise of all combines both a physical activity with a mental one. Try singing your favorite song or listening to a language tape as you walk or jog. Read a book while riding your exercise bicycle.

Stress and Relaxation

Stress management is an important part of preventing memory loss. Chronic stress has been shown to have an adverse effect on brain health and memory performance. It can contribute to depression and anxiety disorders, which also interfere with normal memory function.

You can reduce stress in your life by preparing a schedule ahead of time, balancing work and leisure activities, set realistic expectations and goals. Meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises are all excellent ways of reducing stress and providing relaxation.

Prescribed Pharmaceuticals

Unfortunately, there are only a few pharmaceutical drugs currently being prescribed to treat patients with Alzheimer’s disease, and those only for mild to moderate symptoms

Aricept (donepezil), Rasadyne (galantamine), Exelon (rivastigmine) and Namenda (memantine) have been found to slightly delay the deterioration of memory in patients with Alzheimer’s as well as improve some of the symptoms.

It’s important to note here that patients taking these drugs may experience serious side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea and dizziness. Your doctor should be notified immediately if you notice these or any other reactions to these drugs.

Hormone replacement therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also be added to your pharmaceutical therapy program. A frank discussion with your physician will help you decide the right course of drug therapy for you.

Everyone forgets things. And that may increase as we age, causing us to experience “senior moments.” We notice a decrease in our ability to concentrate, and it may take longer to recall someone’s name. The good news is that age-related memory loss can be improved — and even prevented. Following these guidelines — diet, physical and mental exercise, stress management and pharmaceuticals — will help you keep your mind and memory healthy and youthful as you age. The strategies and techniques outlined here will provide you with an integrated and holistic program for the prevention of memory loss, and also help prevent Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Thus, there is a need for the use of association to create a link within the two several memories. A good way is to spell the numbers out in accordance with their corresponding alphabets. Rather than having to memorize each number format, you can just as easily convert them into a sentence that you can memorize. On the other hand, you can also connect an image to whatever it is that you want to remember. If an image is strange or weird, you will most likely never forget it.

Chunking

Chunking is a excellent trick when you want to quickly figure out how to improve memory. In chunking, your goal is to put all of the information in one place. Consider a situation in which your aim is to memorize your weekly shopping list, for that purpose what you can do is to place similar items together such as toiletries as well as vegetables, fruits etc Consequently, all you need to do is bear in mind specific categories such as vegetables and you will easily be able to recall the items under that particular label. Moreover, if you want to store phone numbers in your memory the best thing to do is to divide them into smaller groups of numbers making the entire process much easier.

Rhyming

You can also use rhyming to help you remember things. Your brain can relate to rhymes more easily making memorization easier as well. Memorizing the initial lines is all that is required because the rest just falls into place automatically.

When you talk about retaining data within your mind, you have to consider two factors which include the number of times something is repeated as well as how recent that data really is. That is why repetition is best for studying. This beats cramming which only allows you to retain data for a short period of time within your short term memory. Generally, individuals will make use of flash cards when utilizing this particular method. Normally, one side of the flash card contains a question and the other the answer.

Eating Right

How can we improve memory with lack of a proper system of nutrition? If you wish for your brain to grow properly then you will have to set a proper diet plan for yourself. An unsavory diet will render your other techniques on how to improve the memory completely useless. Don’t resort to health supplements, just improve your diet. For optimum brain functionality, you need to consume things like bread, cereal, vegetables in addition to fruits. These provide vitamins such as B12, folic acid and other such minerals. On the other hand, water is critical to your brain development since dehydration can cause confusion and lead to bad judgment. When your blood sugar level is decreased, your brain stops functioning properly and memory loss may occur as well. Consequently, it is a great idea to consumer 5 small meals rather than 3 large meals in a day.

What you need to recollect is the fact that most of these exercises will take time before you start seeing changes in your memory. Nevertheless, these methods are popular because of their success rate.

Memory Game – The Modern Exercise Phenomena : Memory Exercises

Article by David Akihito

The modern memory game is truly a phenomenon. Normally, we associate the word exercise to hours of sweat and hard work, jogging hard on that treadmill that we hate so much. However, never before in history has exercise become as enjoyable as it is today with the introduction of games. This is especially so for the memory exercises, many of which have been turned into memory games for helping us to develop our memory and mental ability. There are a variety of different memory games and exercises which can help you to improve your memory, productivity, performance, and overall mental health.

Different exercises may address different forms of memory as well as different part of the brain, so let us first examine a few of the various types of memory and how they play a role in the types of memory games that have been developed. The most commonly understood types of memory include short-term memory and long-term memory. These are forms of memory that we use in our daily lives. Most of the memory game assortments that exist out there are built on training the short-term memory facility of the brain. However, there is still the random memory game that goes into deeper sub-categories of the short-term memory. These include areas such as our spatial memory, meaning the memory of the position of various items that we have.

Some of the more common memory games that are available include the match memory game. In this form of memory game, we need to match one thing with another, and this is usually in the form of a one upturned card with another card that is lying down and whose face and position we need to remember. This is actually quite an easy game to play, but it does wonders for improving the memory ability of an individual. This type of match memory game is popular among both children and adults, and there are many computer versions of the game as well.

Other memory games basically focus on simple short-term memory task such as remembering symbols or pictures which are given to the players. These are often set in different environments and can have added sets of rules for small challenges that the players would enjoy. One variation on this type of memory game is the requirement to memorize audio. Thus, instead of memorizing pictures of symbols or shapes, participants are required to memorize audio playbacks. This is more challenging than the normal visual memorization as most games are focused on visual memory such that most people have never thought of training their audio memory.

If you have been concentrating on memorizing things through pictures so far, you might want to consider giving your brain a twist with a memory game that is focused on other parts of the senses, such as memorizing an audio playback, or memory related to other senses of the body. There are also certain memory games that you can play at home that require you to memorize things based on your sense of touch or even your sense of taste. Have a try at all the different varieties of memory game available, and exercise different parts of your brain for the most benefits.

This technique is the one used by the eight time memory world record holder Dominic O’Brien to remember the sequence of 2808 playing cards. The concept is pretty simple. You create a route through a location you are very familiar with such as your home or your way to work. You then break this route down into little steps, each step being an object. You must have this route very clear and memorable in your mind as without this factor, the memory palace is useless. You then take the list of whatever you want to remember and associate each item with the next object along the memory palace path.

Book summary
When you read a book, you will only remember the most relevant aspects or those most interesting to you. However, if you take the time to summarize what you have read after each chapter or reading session, your mind will draw relations between the different subjects in it, forcing you to recall them all (or at least more that you would have otherwise). A great way to summarize themes, characters, relations, themes, etc is mind mapping as this really breaks it all down wonderfully.

Childhood memories
We have many of your memories stored in little fragments in our brain.

However, not all of these fragments are equally readily available when we need them. For this reason it is good to train ourselves to dig into our memories from time to time as try to assemble as many bits of information as possible to get the most complete picture vividly in our minds. This will help train the brain to find relevant stored information and bring it forward to be used. Over time we will become rather good at providing very thorough memories when we need them spontaneously.

Children’s Homework
It is very likely that what you did at school is still being taught to children now. However good or bad you were at the subject at the time, it is still a great way of forcing the brain to bring back the ability to solve those problems.
