Short Term Memory : Memory Foods – The Diet That Will Improve Your Memory

Article by Jamie Starr

Any activity that is related with our mind pertains to memory and the activity involves recalling of any information that is learned or experienced. Our memory can either be long term or short term. It is said to be long term memory if the information are retained for a long period of time. For the short term memory, the information will stay in your mind within minutes or even with a few seconds.Aside from regular brain exercise, consider the following basic things to further improve the retention of your memory. You have to practice to be always attentive; solicit information on how to improve further the learning style that you have; involve your other senses as much as possible to enhance your memory; relate your gathered information to what you already know; organize the information that you had gathered; understand and at the same time practice interpreting complex problems; rehearse the information then learn from it; and always have a positive mind and keep motivated.

Some scientists discovered that there are certain foods which can actually enhance our memory. Therefore in every meal know the active ingredients of those foods that you are eating because this will affect your memory. Choose the foods that are high in antioxidants because aside from boosting our immune system, antioxidants are also good enhancers on our brain activity because these help the oxygen in circulating to our body. Check out also for the food with a lot of vitamins particularly the Vitamins C, B12, and B6. Vitamin C helps prevent health condition that leads to memory loss while Vitamins B12 and B6 protects the nervous system. Consider eating more on fishes, vegetables, and berries because these are brain boosters.

First, you have to eat more fatty fish because these are very rich in omega 3 oils that help improve our memory. Omega 3 also reduces the occurrence of infection and inflammation of our cells the ends with memory loss. The fatty fish that are good source of this are salmon and sardines. Therefore, you have to eat not less than 3 servings of fish per week to have an improved memory.

Increase your intake of vegetables especially those dark and leafy ones. Make sure to eat this right after you cook or blanch. You have to avoid overcooking it so that the vitamins and other nutrients will not escape. Also try the spinach in favour of folic acid which is good for the brain. Onions is also recommended because of its fisetin content for this is good for long term retention of memory.

The strawberries and blueberries have very high nutrients to enhance our memory. Strawberry is very good for improving our long term memory while blueberries are for persons with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. The other foods that are known to be memory foods are tomatoes, peaches, apples, grapes, oranges and many more.

Short Term Memory : Human Growth Hormone Aids Cognition and Memory

Article by Jennifer Greenfield

As we age, we tend to be more forgetful with a steady loss of both short-term and long-term memory. It is also more difficult to maintain focus on a single task for an appreciable amount of time. Members of the middle age class and elderly also face declining mental function. Similar to our bodies slowly deteriorating over time, our minds experience a similar process where we are forgetful, lose track of our thoughts, experience an inability to concentrate, lose critical thinking skills, and even simple things like finding our keys can be a challenge sometimes.Beginning in our youth, human growth hormone is naturally produced via the brain’s pituitary gland and delivered into the bloodstream. Starting in our twenties, levels of human growth hormone production naturally decline each year. Clinical studies have made the connection that the major reason for members of the middle-age class and elderly to experience such cognition and memory issues is directly linked to declining levels of human growth hormone in our body and bloodstream.A medical study that was performed in Amsterdam at the Free University Hospital tested men who had very low levels of human growth hormone. All the men had memory related issues ranging from short-term memory problems to long-term memory issues. Most men also had some issues with hand and eye coordination. It is important to note that all the men who participated in the study had below average levels of HGH starting in their youth. Through the studies, the medical researchers concluded that individuals who experience chronically low levels of HGH also experience adverse symptoms in the brain’s function with regards to cognition and memory.Other studies were conducted on men who were not born with a chronic deficiency in HGH production. These men simply experienced a natural decline in HGH levels from the aging process. These men were given HGH treatment via synthetic injections, and the results demonstrated a dramatic improvement on memory and cognitive function. These patients who increased their bodily levels of HGH reported the feeling of alertness, ability to remember both short-term and long-term events, the ability to maintain greater focus and increased levels of hand and eye coordination.Prescription treatment plans for human growth hormone are available under the care of a physician. This option, however, can require upwards of 48 painful injections each month with treatment plans requiring a monthly investment of up to ,000. For most interested in such benefits, this is simply not an affordable or convenient option. Many individuals who seek out the proven benefits of HGH as offered by the prescription drug form of HGH have found a safe homeopathic formula that is available over the counter. Certain homeopathic formulas contain natural ingredients that help empower and strengthen the body’s pituitary gland to function at stronger and more youthful levels. The link could be made that by strengthening the pituitary gland to operate at stronger and more youthful levels that increased production levels of HGH via the pituitary gland should result. A select few homeopathic formulas offer a safe, convenient, and cost effective alternative to the expensive and painful prescription treatment.

Jennifer Greenfield writes articles about Maximum Result HGH Complex, a powerful homeopathic formula containing an exclusive blend of high-quality, clinically-proven, natural empower both the pituitary gland and the liver while also providing a significant and diverse set of health benefits that help people look and feel better similar to that of human growth hormone supplements.

Exercises For Short Term Memory : Short Term Memory

Article by Jonathan Higgins

Exercises for short term memory improvement are fun and effective. Short term memory is the one that helps you remember a phone number for a few minutes while you are trying to find the phone. Or, when you’ve just met someone and you attempt to remember their name only a few minutes after being told. If you are always forgetting names of people you just met or can’t remember a phone number for a few minutes when you don’t have a pen to write it down, then you need to improve your short term memory.

Reading Comprehension

I always like to try and kill two birds with one stone when I’m doing something. So, one of the best short term memory exercises to me is trying to recall the details of an article I’ve just read. Pick up your favorite magazine and read an article. Don’t make any extra special effort at trying to remember what you are reading. After you’ve finished the article, put it down and using a pen and paper write down everything you can remember about the article. Again, the point isn’t to memorize the article deliberately, but rather to recall what you read. You’ll find that if you do this once a day that you will get better at it and your short term memory will improve.

Setting Game

Here’s a game that friends and I have played on several occasions. While eating at a restaurant, one of us will suddenly ask another to close their eyes and describe what they can recall about the surroundings. The key is that the person has had no time to prepare. They close their eyes and we them ask them questions such as, “What clothing are the waitresses wearing?” Or, “What color are the walls?” and so on. The person is made to recall as many details about the surroundings as possible.

The Game Of Concentration

Here is the old standard. You can use the actual Concentration board game, or you can use a deck of cards. Be sure there are 2 of each card. Spread them out face down. Each player turns over two cards. If they match, he or she gets a point. If they don’t match, the two cards are turned back over. Each player needs to remember where the cards are. Say you previously turned over a two of diamonds. On this round you turned over the other two of diamonds. Now you have to remember where you saw the matching card earlier and turn it over. If you can you get a point. And so the game goes. This is one of the best exercises for short term memory.

Conclusion

As was mentioned above, short term memory is like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, it becomes weak. Work it out everyday and it will become stronger and stronger. The exercises for short term memory above are some of my favorites.

phoenixnutritionals.com (CLICK HERE) With the baby boom generation moving into their senior years, we have more people over the age of 55 than ever before. This shift in aging has forced medical science and others in the healing field to pay closer attention to heath concerns of aging than ever before. One of the areas of concern as we grow older is our memory. As the body and brain age, our short-term memory seems to become less acute. As memory fades the mood of the brain and hence the person, also changes, and older people are more susceptible to depression and an overall lack of mental clarity. For some reason, still full not understood, it is short-term memory that seems to falter first. Mental clarity is also compromised and many older people complain of being in a brain fog or that everything seems fuzzy. The very real connection between memory loss and depression or mood problems must also be addressed. Nutritional science has come to the rescue for many older people by identifying foods and nutrients for better memory and providing natural memory supplements and natural memory boosters to help this annoying situation. Loss of short-term memory can have many contributing factors. Aging itself is a major factor as the brain, like the rest of the body, does not work as efficiently as when it was younger. Stress is another major factor that can dramatically affect memory, especially short-term memory. Prescription drugs are another area of concern since many drugs

To keep the mind active throughout the life time requires lots of effort. What we generally refer to memory is actually many different processes occur in the brain. There are two types of memory, one is referred as short term and other is long term memory. These are fundamentally distinctive interactive processes.Only some percentage of short term memory is getting converted into the long term memory storage. When the event stores into the long term memory storage, the brain synthesizes the protein for axon and dendrite pathways after taking decision that whether the event is important enough to store? The hippocampus, cortex and frontal lobes are actively involved in the storage, retention and revival of the facts.

A key to building memory power that can lat long is to be able to relate the new fact with the old one. We can keep the memories working and active. Just imagine a situation that you are in the meeting and you are the only one to see the vision for the company and you can get the boost with it.

There are numerous methods that can be applied to keep memory active. A bored mind can be jolted to the activities with becoming more and more curious about the things. This can give an edge and will boost the confidence where others can refuse to trade. You can be there and will be able to talk with the edge it gives.

Another good method is to use mnemonics and memory aids. You should make habit to remember particular things with their short form s or converting them into some meaningful thoughts. This will help you when you have to remember the large amount of information. At the end, you can have many letters that you can format into tone particular string that can be remembered. And can be easy to recall. You can just remember the letters in your mind and you can immediately recall whole information. When you want to concentrate hard just think about your happy times in past, the clothes you really like, best thing you have ever done and there will smile on your face with the confidence and this confidence will help you to get the concentration.

Numerous emotions whether they are happy or sad will help you to remember the scenes in the memory. The conscious emotions always help to remember the things greatly. Remember your happy times and keep the sharp mental pictures of it. At the times of recall just go back to that state of mind where you stored the pictures. To remember long list of things in memory, this is a good method, especially when you are going for shopping.

Arrange the things in craziest method and arrange them like fish, boat, key etc. Now, imagine a picture that you went in between the sea and open the whale with the key in your hand. Even though this is crazy but it will help you to remember the things related to boat, whale and key. Try this right now and you will surely remember the things related to it.

Short Term Memory : Stop The Memory Loss! Memory Training Is The Answer

Article by Craig Smith

Our memory is quite an unreliable storehouse of the info, its contents may change influenced by new information. Some of the events linger in our memory for a while, others fade terribly fast. On the other hand if we have recalled everything, then finally our brains would fail to discern first from the secondary and its activity would be absolutely paralyzed. That is why our memory is not just the ability to remember but also to forget. Memory loss is a fact of life, but you can improve your memory.Scientists distinguish 3 types of memory: spontaneous, short term and long term. Spontaneous memory ( direct memory ) keeps the information for about 1/4 seconds, and if its signals do not attract highest parts of the brains the information is erased and direct memory is filled with new signals. Short term memory lasts for twenty seconds. If the data is not introduced once again, it vanishes with no obvious trace. The analysis proved that short term memory considerably improves at the age of 5 – 11. Then up to thirty it remains on the same level. Later from thirty to 70 it can either progress or degenerate. Infrequently we memorize some events because of their emotional significance to us, even if they do not happen any more. The more material is connected with other factors in varied contexts and from the different viewpoints the better we memorize it. There are no tricks as for developing a sound memory. Often you can’t recollect some tallies of words or figures, detailed content of the analysis essay you wrote a week ago. Sten M. Andersen wrote a book about being memory savvy, and the name of his 128-page e-book is titled, “Memory, How to Develop, Train, and Use It.” http://www.selfhelpwebsites.net/improve-your-memory“>Stop the memory loss! Short Term Memory : Sharpen Memory Skills to Sharpen the Mind

Article by Stephen Lau

Copyright (c) 2009 Stephen Lau

You don’t have to be forgetful. You don’t have to live with poor memory. Bad memory is not something you were born with and cannot be changed. The good news is that you can sharpen memory skills to sharpen the mind. Yes, you can significantly improve memory through the applications of basic memory tools.

Learn these basic memory tools to sharpen the mind to improve memory.

1. Good memory is a result of relevant mental associations. In mental processing, you associate the unfamiliar with the familiar, thereby enabling you to recall the new information as soon as you associate it with the old information you already know or remember.

2. Visualization is another powerful basic memory tool to help you sharpen the mind. Seeing is believing, and a picture is worth a thousand words. If you can vividly visualize something in your mind’s eye, your memory of that becomes more vivid, and you will retain that memory for longer.

3. Being creative and imaginative is an indispensable asset in good memory. The reason is that with a creative mind, you can come up with mental associations that are totally outrageous. The more absurd your mental associations are, the longer they will stick in your memory. You can learn to become more creative and imaginative through more practice. As long as you can think of something extraordinary, you can create out-of-the-ordinary mental associations that you will not easily forget.

4. The human mind has a great capacity for storage of information. In fact, we have used up only about ten percent of the storage space. To help you remember all types of information as well as to retrieve the stored information, you need to think logically and categorize systematically the information in your mind’s eye. The brain is like a file cabinet, where you put different types of information according to different categories or headings.

When your mind initially receives the information, it goes into your sensory memory, which is fleeting. In other words, the information becomes only short-term memory. If nothing is done about it, it will be forgotten soon. To be able to remember it and therefore be able to recall it later, you need to repeat that information, and that is where all the basic memory tools come into play.

You can associate the new information (short-term) with something you already know; you can visualize what the information will look like in your mind’s eye; you can use your imagination to make the image not only vivid but also absurd so that it will stick in your memory; and you categorize it in your mental file cabinet for subsequent retrieval. All you need is repetition of the information using all the basic memory tools to sharpen memory skills. Repetition holds the key to transfering short-term memory to long-term memory.

However, the process of repeating and remembering may not be as simple and straighforward as you wish: there may be obstacles to hinder the process. These obstacles include distraction, lack of focus, inadequate motivation, and stress.

The will is strong, but the mind is weak. You want to remember the information, but there may be distractions, such as noises around you, your memory of somethng else in the past, or your mental preoccupation with something in the future. If you cannot focus on remembering it, or if you are not motivated to remember it (that is, thinking it is not too important for you), the remembering process, despite the repetition, will not be effective. Worst, if you are under stress, your mind will not be able to utilize efficiently the basic memory tools to sharpen memory skills to sharpen the mind.

To conclude, sharpen memory skills to improve memory. You can do it!

Short Term Memory : Tips To Keep Your Memory Sharp

Article by Holothink.com

Keeping the memory in good condition is a vital part of the brain’s function. Every now and then, our actions greatly depend on a lot of information we retrieve from our memory bank. Such information can either be short term (such as specific tasks that we have to do) or long term (such as the ability to drive a car or repeat an instruction we read from a book). While long-term memory may come spontaneously without too much effort when the need arises, short-term memory requires recalling information from the accumulation of things stored in our memory. This is why you need to keep your memory in great shape to achieve efficiency in your daily endeavors:

Short Term Memory : How To Improve Your Memory With Just A Few Simple Steps

Article by George Tee

Have you ever been in the middle of a thought and could not remember what you were thinking of? Perhaps you were about to take an exam and forgot all of the information that you thought you knew. Maybe you were talking to someone and forgot entirely what his name was.

If any of these situations sound familiar to you, read on to discover some relatively simple ways to jog your memory and keep everything in perspective.

Many scientists suggest that taking ginkgo biloba will improve your memory by releasing nootropic or “smart cell” properties into your system. If using memory supplements for the rest of your life does not sound appealing to you, perhaps something more hands-on might be more useful.

According to cognitive psychologists, learning and memorization is more meaningful when it is connected to your prior knowledge of something.

When the information is presented in a manner in which it can move from your short – term memory to your long – term memory, where it remains so that you can use the information in the future.

One such method of committing material to your long – term memory is through repetition, verbal or written, of new information. This process will pull new information from your short-term memory, where it is temporarily stored to make room for new information, to your long-term memory so that you can remember and use it in the future.

Motivation plays a big role in this aspect of improvement of recognition. As with all aspects of life, if you do not desire to learn the information and commit it to memory, it will move no further than your short-term memory, as your brain will interpret this disposition as meaning that the information in question is not necessary for long-term storage.

Consequently, the use of interactive resources, such as flash cards (which aid in the repetitive process), and learning or memory manipulative make remembering information more interesting and personalized, thus drawing the new material to your long-term memory to be stored permanently.

The key in this particular aspect of memory improvement is that the new information be connected in some way to your prior knowledge of a related concept. Without this knowledge, the new information will make much less sense to you and you will be significantly less likely to remember it in the future.

For example, when learning a foreign language, it is important to connect the new concepts to ones that have previously been learned – that is, concepts that can be recollected and reused – or to concepts familiar to the learner, such as similarities between his native language and that of the target language.

Interestingly, scientists have determined that your memory can actually be improved and memory-loss diseases such as Alzheimer’s be prevented through learning of a foreign language.

The brain is a muscle, and, like the rest of the muscles in your body, must frequently be exercised or it will atrophy. If you follow these suggestions, you will be able to remember almost anything in no time!

Short Term Memory : How to Maximize the Potential of Your Memory

Article by Lilian Price

Most people believe that memory will deteriorate as you grow older and there’s really nothing that you can do to halt it. Fortunately, the reality is different. In this brief article, I’ll tell you the kind of steps to take in order to retain, or even enhance, your memory irrespective of your age.

Try to memorize things in sets of 7. According to studies, the human capacity for Short Term Memory (or STM) is 7, add or minus 2. That is why human beings memorize things better when it is in groups of 7.

Did you know that, even late in life, you can grow new brain cells within the memory center of your brain? Research has shown that proper aerobic exercise, like running and bicycling, can stimulate the growth of brain neurons in the brain’s hippo-campus. Hence, if you want better memory, try to add aerobic exercises to your daily endeavors.

Challenge your memory. Push yourself to remember little details. There are many games online and on video game consoles that are specifically designed to challenge your memory. Play them regularly. Get your brain in the habit of remembering things. Your memory is like a muscle. You need to exercise it.

In case you need to remember relatively complicated information, give mnemonics technique a try. It works by associating information with common and familiar things. When you make that association, you can think of the common item, and it will trigger your memory of the more complicated piece of information.

Never cram everything that needs to be remembered into a single study session. Researchers have found out that information retention is better if you make time to master it. You can do this by scheduling short study sessions in the days and weeks, prior to an exam. Cramming the whole chunk into one short sitting will mostly likely be counter productive.

Exercise every day. When you are engaged in physical activity, blood will circulate in your brain. This will help to keep your memory in shape. In the event that your are not the “let’s get physical type”, there are plenty of ways that you can get your blood pumping – try walking or riding a bike.

If you want to remember something new, say it! All new materials ought to be remembered by reading them aloud. When you read them out loud, your brain forms a memory pathway via sight and hearing. This gives two paths of retrieval when you want to recall this information at a future date.

When trying to remember a small group of items try to sing them. Make things that you need to remember into little songs. Studies conducted on songs show that it is easier to remember them than just remembering groups of objects in a list. Try to think of them in terms of jingles you hear on television and the radio, they are very easy to remember even when you hear them only once or twice.

Some experts believe that, on average, your short-term memory can hold a maximum of seven items for approximately 30 seconds. However, there are ways to improve this capacity. One of them is by “chunking”. “Chunking” refers to the process of taking small or singular pieces of information and consolidating them into larger “chunks” that are easier to remember. For instance, instead of storing the nine digits of a social-security number separately, it’s better to remember them by splitting them into three units this way: the first three numbers, the two middle numbers, and the last four numbers, in the way the number is written.

For important things you have to remember on a certain day, use a pen and write the information on your hands. This is a technique that has been used for generations and it works because you know the information is on you at all times. Just make sure you do not wash your hands!

Consuming certain type of food and staying clear of others can enhance the function of the brain and prevent the onset of dementia. Foods to go for include those full of Omega-3 fatty acids, vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants, moderate amount of wine and grape juice. The resveratrol present in these drinks will increase the brain’s blood flow and keep Alzheimer’s disease in the back burner. Try to avoid foods that are high in saturated fats. The culprits are red meat, ice cream and butter.

Many people use visualization to remember information. Try visualizing what you wish to remember, create mind pictures, and draw diagrams or charts to aid in remembering information in textbooks or during lectures at school. The mind has the power to recall images and remember visual details, including long-forgotten ones.

To keep memory loss at bay, make the effort to socialize with your friends regularly. Interacting with loved ones and friends helps to prevent depression and stress, both of which seriously impede memory function. Set time in your schedule to relax and enjoy with your friends. Your memory will thank you for it.

Break complicated information down into small memorable pieces. This trick is often used to help individuals remember large numbers. For instance, your credit card numbers, phone number and social security number are all broken down into small, hyphenated sections to make them easier to recall.

A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you change your study habits from time to time. This is a great method as it will help to keep your memory active. Shifting locations will stimulate the mind and open up its ability to store much more in the long term memory sector.

Short Term Memory : The Idea of Procedural Memory in “Memento”

Article by Andrew Schwartz

In the beginning of the movie “Memento”, the main character, Leonard Shelby, wakes up in a hotel room not understanding for what purpose and where he is. Leonard developed the amnesia resulting from brain damage. In the movie, Leonard keeps in mind all previous events up to the moment when he was hurt. Fascinatingly, he also remembers his diagnosis, as in one of the scenes he gives details of his diagnosis. Leonard did not lose the ability to deliberate logically; he also entirely realizes own individuality. Simultaneously, he cannot maintain memories and records those either in his remarks or makes photos of the events. Leonard is not able to go further than his own reasonable reasoning and assumptions. The main hero may get confused if a talk takes too long and lose track of the discussion. The doctor states that he had lost the short term memory. In actual fact, the doctor is wrong because Leonardo has short term memory; but the reason of problem is that it is not prearranged into the long term memory.

All activities connected with procedural memory are saved and can be retrieved in Shelby’s memory. Going even further, practical memory is most important to the plot in “Memento”, because Leonard many times flashed back at the examination that he carried out previous to the injury of a man stating that he had amnesia. In the movie, this man, Sammy, experiences a test: he received minute electrical shots as he picks up an electrified object of certain shape. The process was repeated quite a few times in order to guarantee that Sammy’s mind does not react to conditioning.

In general, the film properly reflects the idea of procedural memory and short term memory. The main character suffers amnesia, which is accurately depicted in the movie. The possible reasons of the illness contain damage to the fornix’s,, mammilla bodies or hippocampus. In case of Leonard, hippocampus was injured. Even though such situation is fairly infrequent, it still can be the motive for the illness. The disorder is indicated with the failure to create memories of the actions experienced – information to be moved from short term memory to the long term one.
