Short Term Memory : The Power of Mind: Sharpen Your Memory

Article by Mike Eagleston

Consecutive forgetfulness is a problem of many people. This is common among physically mature people. However, this is also a problem among some young people. It is normal to forget something sometimes. What isn’t normal is if you forget all the time. To sharpen memory, you must be aware of the power of mind.

It is a known fact that the brain is a mega-storage of information more than the greatest computers can store. Every second, the brain tracks and records information: taste, sight, touch, smell, locomotors, and memory. Even the most powerful computer can’t record these experiences all at once.

Man’s brain has a capacity to store up to quadrillion information bits so it is understandable when sometimes we forget short term recollection. This is because sometimes the information is overflowing that it is already spilling out like water out of a full pitcher.

Short term memory is the ability to remember something within a small fraction of time. You may wonder why you can’t remember anymore the meals that you have taken last week. This is because this information is already washed out of your mind and usually can’t be retrieved.

If a meaningful event happens during the process of short-term memory, it transitions into long-term memory. The power of mind is demonstrated here. A simple meal of omelet and cranberry juice is just breakfast for some but for you, you may remember it as the first meal you had with your present partner. The Eiffel Tower may just be a common tourist sit for some but for many, it is remembered as a backdrop of an arousing romance.

With that theory in notion, a possible way to sharpen memory is born. If a short-term memory is transitioned into long term memory with the help of a meaningful event, then it is easy to transition as much short-term memory as we can into long-term memory if we can just “associate” common things with a special label.

In an exam perhaps, it is easier to memorize the facts if you make them lyrics to a song. In that way, it is easy for you to remember the facts you have memorized. When you need to retrieve the information from your mind, all it takes is to remember the song and the lyrics.

Some students even claim that they can remember facts through memorizing the position of the words in the book. If a certain question has keywords of what they have memorized, then they would visualize that the answer is found at the upper right side of the book page. In that way, they can easily remember.

Mind sharpening drugs are also available in the market. These drugs claim to sharpen memory by increasing brain concentration. A herb that is famous for this claim is the Chinese Ginseng. Oriental people claim to drink tea with ginseng to increase alertness and agility.

The power of mind is not negligible. People who know how to use it and improve its use make the most out of their existence.

Photographic Memory : How to Keep Your Mind Sharp, Improve Your Memory and IQ, Impress Others, and Make More Money

Article by David Maillie

Everyone has seen or heard of someone with a photographic memory. We have also seen or know people afflicted with alzheimers, dementia, and low IQ’s. Why do some people have such memory power and others either never have it or are stripped of it by disease and neglect.

Studies have shown that 50% of brain power and function is genetic, and 50% is environment derived. What that means is that, yes, there are some that are born better off than others – Just like some people are born with more wealth than the rest of us (Paris Hilton, Martin Sheen, etc…), but for every one inherently better off rich kid (spoiled brat) there are 3 or more selfstarters that have equaled or surpassed them with hard work. This is the same with inherent genius. This means that 50% of your brain power is a direct result of its environment – what it is exposed to, the activity it receives, and can be seriously developed to even surpass the born super geniuses.

The brain is very similar to a muscle. We have all heard of stories of the underdog in sports. Someone whom has overcome great difficulty, diseases like cancer (Lance Armstrong), etc… and risen to be the best – far exceeding people with better genetics, better training, etc… The brain is no different. The number one thing to increase your brain’s thinking power is activity. Just like muscles it needs to be exercised and stretched out.

Dr’s know that the way to avoid mental decline is to constantly expose the brain to new activities. Keep it active. Studies have shown that the harder you work your brain the more it will improve. It has actually been proven that those who work their minds the hardest have actually shown definite and marked improvement in scores on various intelligence tests. It has also been proven that stagnation will cause a marked decline on those same tests. This same activity has even been proved to help those whose minds have already started to decline – even in alzheimers patients.

Now, just like the body has many different muscles, the brain has numerous functions and each has its own area or region. This is why there is autism and savants like Rainman. Gentics just like the environment can lead to gross overdevelpment of a region and underdevelopment of others (autism). Just like body builders wouldn’t want to just work on their chest muscles, you want to try and expand your whole range of thought for a more well rounded brain. There are many different areas of brain thought like short term and long term memory, spatial perception, logic, some even say there is an unknown area that has been related to psychics and communication with the unknown (studies have actually shown that there is an area of the mind unlinked with any known thought processes that is highly developed (extensive increases in neuropathways and blood flow) that is only seen in psychic and paranormal activities – interesting!

We will not go into how to exercise each of the areas of the brain as there are numerous books on this (a great one is by Harry Lorraine – The Memory Book. Just remember crossword puzzles, college and adult education classes, reading – especially different subject matter, brainstorming, etc… will all help you develope your mind and reach your peak mental fitness and potential. I just want you to realize how important it is to keep your mind active and sharp. This mental exercise will inherently improve your IQ, bolster your confidence, make you and your life more interesting, earn you more friends, and make you more money for all these same reasons, regardless your profession – what have you got to lose. Maybe through brainstorming and streching the limits of your mind you will invent new ideas, products, or maybe even start your own business. This is how we invented our patented headlight cleaner and restorer, formed a biochemical company, and became the number one supplier of TCA peel skin peels in the world. Start exercising your brain today – you never know where it may take you!

Short Term Memory : Memory is Feature of the Human Mind

Article by Dr. Mital John

It is the control center of the nervous system. The brain is located in the head. Controls and coordinates most of the movements, reactions, and homeostatic body functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure, fluid balance and body temperature. The functions of the brain responsible for awareness, feeling, memory, motor learning and other types of learning.

Brain, together with the heart, is one of the two most important organs of the human body. Stopping the operation of this body is a definition of death. The brain is the subject of scientific study of some areas – neuron-science, psychology, neurology, psychiatry, cognitive science.

Problems with the brain

Keeping Your Mind And Brain Healthy : Brain Foods

Article by Connie Limon

Mental activity can keep your mind sharp. Continue to learn and challenge yourself and your brain continues to grow.

Review the following tips to help challenge your brain to continual growth:

* Learn to play a musical instrument* Play scrabble or do crossword puzzles* Interact with others* Switch careers or start a new one* Start a new hobby with crafts, painting, wood-working* Learn a foreign language* Volunteer* Travel* Stay informed about world news* Read

Taking classes that interest you or just reading more can help you maintain memory longer as you age.

Staying physically active increases blood flow to all parts of the body, including the brain; exercise may even promote cell growth in the brain. Exercise makes you feel more energetic and alert. Just recently I started a membership at a local fitness center. I am amazed at how much better I feel after over one month of daily activity in the fitness center. I walk at a moderate speed on the treadmill for 60 minutes everyday. I started out just five minutes per day, then added one minute each day thereafter.

Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables protect and nourish brain cells. Antioxidants may also help prevent cholesterol from damaging the lining of your arteries and slowing blood flow to your brain. Foods high in antioxidants include:

* Oranges* Berries* Broccoli* Spinach* Carrot* Sweet potatoes* Tomatoes

You are more likely to gain the health benefits of antioxidants from eating whole foods than by taking supplements.

Heavy drinkers for many years can experience permanent brain damage. Heavy drinkers are also at a higher risk of developing memory problems and dementia. If you drink alcohol, do so moderately. If you do not drink alcohol, do not start. Moderate drinking means for women anyone 65 or older, one drink daily. For men under 65, no more than two drinks daily.

Some evidence shows that “moderate” alcohol consumption may prevent memory loss; this is not clear how. If you already do not drink, don’t start just for this reason.

Try to keep stress to a minimum. Chronic stress may cause your brain to release hormones that can damage the brain. Chronic stress can also make you feel depressed or anxious. These are feelings that can interfere with your memory.

Protect your head when doing exercise such as riding a bike. Head injury can increase your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Smokers may have twice the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease as people who never smoked. It is never too late to stop smoking. You can still reduce risk of memory loss later in life.

If you have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, talk to your doctor, he or she may be able to suggest ways of preventing the disease that would prove helpful to you.

Keeping regular doctor appointments is a good way to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood sugar level as well as to be sure your thyroid gland is functioning normally. These are easy ways to know what is going on inside your body.

Memory Exercises : Mind Aid For Better Memorization

Article by Shareen Aguilar

Try to analyze your memorization skill. Does your memory seem to dwindle each time you come across numbers, new names and faces? What about list of items? If you answered yes to both questions, then it is time for you to handle memorization challenges before it gets worse.

What is it really about memorization skill which people are after? It’s not only the healthy benefit of being able to remember important occasions, special events and valuable information. In fact, it is the effect on what we do for remembering such things. A good memory attracts good impression among co-workers including superiors at work. In school, good memorization ability of course gets you on top of the class. But even then, good memorization is extremely important in recalling and retaining information that matters most in day to day living.

There are in fact, memorization solutions. Start with a good and balanced diet. This ensures that your food intake everyday contains all the necessary nutrients and vitamins to battle out the free radicals that usually are the cause of sickness and other diseases. Fish is good for this purpose. Make sure you eat fish regularly because the oil from it has Omega-3 which enriches a person’s capability to concentrate on memorization. Fish oil supplements are also a good alternative if fish is not a very good choice for you.

Through exercises, your brain is apt to work even more efficiently. Not the physical exercise type (though physical exercises also supplies oxygen to your brain which makes it another important point why being physically active is also a must), the memory exercises type. An example of a good memory exercise is mnemonics. As defined, mnemonics are effective aid for a person of any age who desires to maintain good or improve memory.

Mnemonics are good because it allows your mind to wander about and imagine things that are not as they seem. Notice how an imaginary creation sticks to your mind easily? Even just funny scenarios become so vivid in your mind resulting to a clear memory recall. So if you have the chance, try what you can to boost your memorization by eating right and putting your brain to exercise.

Popular Foodstuff For A Sharper Mind : Brain Foods

Article by Sharon Bell

Everybody knows that food is important for strong and healthy growth. Eating the right type of food will help in boosting the immune system and enabling the body to perform at its peak. However, not many people are aware that eating the right type of food is also essential in keeping the mind sharp.

The brain needs certain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in order to function well. If you do not feed your brain with the right types of food, then you are depriving it of the things it needs to maintain optimum health. If you do not want to lose your marbles at an early age or if you want to keep your mind astute even when you are in your 90s, then you ought to include the following foods and herbs in your diet regularly:

Fish

Many studies have confirmed that eating fish regularly helps boost concentration and improve the performance of brain waves. Eating fatty fishes, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, can give you added brain power because they contain essential fatty acids, such as omega 3, 6 and 9, that are known to help enhance memory and prevent clots and clogs in blood vessels.

Nuts

It has long been believed that nuts, especially walnuts and almonds, are brain food because they contain amino acids and other minerals that are helpful in making the brain sharp. In fact, studies conducted in Latin America show that people who eat nuts before exams fare better than those who did not eat nuts. However, more in depth research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of nuts in boosting mental prowess.

Olive And Canola Oils

Totally eliminating fats in your diet is actually not advisable, especially because certain types of fat are necessary for optimum brain functions. You really do not have to drink liters of oil in order to boost your mind. Just a few teaspoons of canola or olive oil in your salad are already helpful. By the way, olive oil and canola oil contain memory-enhancing mono-saturated fat.

Fiber-rich food

We all know that fiber is important in sweeping out toxins and waste materials in our digestive tract. However, fiber is also important in preventing brain fogging. You see, people who experience constipation and other digestive woes usually cannot think straight and perform well.

Lean Meat

You really do not have to be a vegetarian in order to help prevent Alzheimer’s or dementia. In fact, meat, especially the lean cuts, is considered as a brain food because it contains proteins that are needed in the production of brain tissues, neurotransmitters, enzymes and other brain chemicals. Skinless chicken, lean cuts of beef, and low-fat or skim dairy products are all good sources of protein.

Berries

Almost all fruits are good for your brain because they are rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that are essential in keeping your mind and body strong and healthy. However, if you are more interested in delaying your brain’s aging, you ought to eat more fruits from the berry family. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, prunes, raisins and cranberries are all rich sources of brain-boosting antioxidants.

Wine

A glass of wine is not only good for your heart, but also does wonders for your mind. Wine contains a lot of antioxidants that are needed by your brain to function properly. However, you have to remember to drink wine in moderation because too much of anything is also bad for you and your brain.

Other brain foods include broccoli, brown rice, oatmeal, peanut butter, potatoes, soybeans, wheat germ, yogurt and cantaloupe. Aside from eating the right types of food to keep your mind sharp even when you are old, you also need to take nutritional supplements that are aimed at promoting the health of your brain. One product that is effective in improving brain functions is Neurovar. You can learn more about this supplement by visiting http://www.Neurovar.com.

The Fallacy of Brain Power – The Real Location of the Mind : Brain Power

Article by Jack Vorster

While others are searching for that elusive 90% (supposedly) unused brain power, it is possible for you to go directly to the seat of the mind within you and find it quicker than anyone else. Just the mere revelation of this knowledge should make you want to dance in the street as you prepare to tackle the world around you with a new perspective. Let’s take a look.

We humans regard ourselves as living, physical entities capable of intellectual and emotional expression as supposedly generated by our brain by means of our mind, which, in turn, we presume forms an integral part of the brain. In assured fashion, we would at times go so far as to point at our head with one finger to indicate that we are busy thinking – simply because it feels like it’s all happening up there. Fallacy!

What if you were told that the human brain is empowered by the spirit within you for the sole purpose of controlling the bodily functions of the physical part of our make-up and that it has no conscious intellectual or emotional capabilities – let alone contain a memory database? As far out as this may seem, it is fact.

Inside of our human spirit is an area referred to as the heart. This is where it all happens. And this is where the true you is reflected. Your heart encompasses the consciousness and individuality of your human spirit and seats your intellect and emotions. Your personality, in its totality, is located here and it is reflected to the world you live in. How?

Enter the chief executive officer of your heart – your mind. This baby hugs your heart like the mouse to your computer. However, this guy can be mischievous. Like an ethereal roamer around the heart he is supposed to do the honourable thing and reflect the good things of the heart to the world. Your heart contains all the good, as well as bad things that it has absorbed since entering the world. All of your physical senses have gathered information and channelled it to your heart via a conduit, called the brain.

Your physical body is, in effect, your heart’s window to the material world. And the heart of your spirit has an unlimited capacity for the storage of information and memory. This is where dreams and ideas are conjured up and processed based on its massive database of knowledge. The decision-maker, the mind, takes what is in the heart and decides how to portray it or apply it to circumstances. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:” (Prov. 23:7) This certainly tells us where all of man’s thinking takes place.

This “chief executive officer” of your spirit, the mind, acts as the spokesperson for your heart. What this spokesperson says, you get. Your brain stands at attention waiting for instructions from the mind to express the whims of the mind by means of the tongue and physical body. Talk about the power of the tongue. This lad is nothing more than the mouthpiece for the inner mind to the natural world. And now you also know why it feels like all our deliberations take place in that cavity filled by the brain.

Depending on the condition of the mind, it can either be honest or maliciously deceitful. What comes out of your mouth is the voice of the mind of your spirit. Aggression, bitterness, hate, love, joy and peace are all items of knowledge stored in the heart as a result of experiences picked up in our world. Your mind decides what to extract from the heart and present to the world. It can make or break those around you – and it can also make or break you as an individual.

Your heart and your mind are bosom buddies. They are all that you have. They are you. If you renew your mind to take only the good things of the heart, you’ll have a synergy that can conquer and overcome the world – turning war into peace and failure into success.

Guess what? You have discovered where that 90% has been lurking all the time and you are now in a position to saddle it and ride it.

Now that you know all of this, go ahead and dance in the street, but not for too long. What will the neighbours think?
