Memory is the retention of information over a period of time through storage, encoding, and retrieval. For something to be considered memory, you have to take it in, store it, and then retrieve it for use in the future. Memory is a very complex things and it can let you down sometime especially when our trying to remember something, especially during an important test in your life. Also memory can also cause some confusion, especially when two people experience different events.

For example, if two friends went on a trip and one said scenario A happened while the other says that scenario B happened then It could lead to lots of confusion. I think it’s fair to say that most individuals have experienced frustrations when they can’t recall someone’s name or a place that they visit. It’s obvious that memory is not installed like data is in a computer; human memory is a little more concrete.

The initial stage of memory is known as encoding, in which the information is processed for storage. When you are listening to music, or watching television you are encoding information into memory. Some data gets into memory practically effortlessly, while other requires some extensive time to get in there. How information gets stored into data is an interest in psychologist because it tends to vary from individual to individual. When we start encoding we use selective attention which means that we focus on a specific situation while ignoring everything else. It’s like showing undivided attention to a specific factor. Although our brain is magnificent, and is more powerful than a super computer it does has its limits, and it can’t pay attention to everything at once. Divided attention also has an impact on memory, which means that people try to pay attention to too many different things at once. When researchers measure divided attention they have participants to try and remember a list of materials, but they are asked to perform an additional task at the same time. Participants that focus their attention on one single event as opposed to trying and remember numerous of things simultaneously perform a lot better. However simply paying attention to something does not guarantee success with remembering it. Encoding is processed in three different levels. Levels of processing is known as encoding information from shallow to deep and the deeper processing produce better results than the shallow.

A discovery made by scientists during the 1990’s reveals cannabis-like molecules and are an important part of the normal chemical balance within our brains. We all have a system of nerve cells that produce naturally occurring cannaboid neurotransmitters that closely resemble thc found in marijuana. Because thc mimics these cannaboid neurotransmitters, our brains are prewired to react to the thc in pot.

New neurotransmitter system found in THC Distribution Study. Scientists attached radio active markers to the THC molecules that enable them to be photo graphed.

THC carried by the blood separates evenly throughout the brain, but surprisingly, the THC molecules quickly come to rest in specific areas of the brain. Why do our brains produce a natural receptor site for the THC? (All mammals have natural receptor sites for THC) There is barely a physiological system in which endocannaboids (natural) are not involved.

The hippocampus (an enfolding of cerebral cortex into the lateral fissure of a cerebral hemisphere, having the shape in cross section of a sea horse) plays a critical role in short-term memory, advancing events in our immediate awareness into long-term memories. Appealing research discovered a new chemical, SR141716A, in a mouse marijuana study. SR141716A does the opposite of the THC in the memory part of your brain. It occupies the cannabinoid receptors that would normally be disrupted by THC. The study revealed elder rats blocking normal enocannabinoid activity prolongs their memory. Our cannabinoid system is designed to modulate the amount of short-term memory we have. Too little short-term memory an we wouldn’t be able to learn anything new. A healthy cannabinoid system is essential for learning and memory.

In another study the cannabinoid blocker SR141716A was administered to rat babies with-in the first 24 hours of life. The baby rats turned off all natural occurring cannibinoid activity. As a result they failed to suckle and eventually died. Apparently one function of our brains endocannabinoid system is to promote the suckling and bonding critical to a mammals survival. Munchies sound familiar? These are linked with comfort foods and emotional experiences from the past.

Techniques to Increase Your Memory : Short Term Memory

Article by Christian Wallace

Have you ever been put in a situation when someone vaguely familiar comes up to you to say hello and you can’t recall the person’s name or your association with him even if your life depended on it? Have you been introduced to someone minutes ago then moments later you can’t recall the person’s name? Can you recite your social security number now? Don’t you wish your mind is like a computer wherein the addition of more memory chips would boost its capacity?

In a nutshell memory is the mental process of recalling information and events that you have learned and experienced. However, the process of storing and recalling information is not that easy. The mechanism of the brain is complex and up to now new discoveries are made about the functions and abilities of the brain.

Short term and Long term Memory

There are two kinds of memory: short term memory and long term memory. Short term memory deals with the ability of the mind to store information for a few seconds or a few minutes. This is the span of time that it takes for you to dial a phone number that you have just looked up or to look at a list of items that you need to buy. Short term memory was meant to be for if you remember every single phone number that you have dialed or remembered all the prices of goods that you saw in stores or remembered every single dish that you have cooked or retained the exact texts of the books that you have read, your brain would have been “full”. The human brain was meant to hold from 5 to 9 items in its short term memory. This is why you can easily remember a phone number for a few seconds to minutes and this is why you would have a hard time remembering a 12 to 16-digit account number.

Long term memory entails information that you made a conscious or unconscious effort to retain because it’s important and meaningful to you (facts about family and friends); you need it (materials and procedures for school or work); or it made an emotional impact. There are three types of long term memory – episodic, which are personal memories; semantic, which are facts not limited to time and place and procedural memory which involves routines like driving, playing a musical instrument, riding a bike and any other activity that don’t require conscious effort to recall.

Three Stages of Forming Memory

Acquisition is when new information goes in the brain. The key in retaining this new information is for you to concentrate on the new information. If you don’t pay attention the new information will just goes in one ear and out the other.

Consolidation is when you’ve concentrated enough for the new information to be encoded in your brain the hippocampus will send the necessary signal for the brain to store the encoded information to long-term memory.

Retrieval happens when you need to recall the memory. Your brain will activate the same nerve cell path used in storing the data. The more you retrieve the information the more it would be easier for you to recall it. Think of memorizing a song. The more times you sing it the easier it is for you to recall the lyrics each time.

Techniques on improving memory

Barring injury, disorder or disease, you can improve your ability to retain and recall memory. The more you “work-out” your brain, the better are your chances of improving your retention and recall. There are brain exercises that you can do to improve memory. One example is brushing your teeth using your non-dominant hand or getting dressed with your eyes closed. There are online sites that have details on brain exercise.

There are mnemonic techniques that you can use to improve memory. Mnemonics are clues to help you remember things with the use of association by visuals, words, or a sentence. For example, you can associate a flower to person with the name Daisy or Rosie. Remember Every Good Boy Does Fun – EGBDF ? These are the keys of the lines in a music staff. What about remembering how many days are there for each month of the year? “Thirty days hath September, April, June and November…” Until now there are still a lot of persons who recite this poem to remember the number of days per month. With this type of memory technique has no limitations as you can make up as much visual or word association you want in. The downside is, you might have to recite each made-up mnemonics every time you need to recall.

Chunking is one way remembering figures and words. The items that need to be memorized are approached in small divided parts. For example the figure 356295389 is better memorized when divided as 356 -295 -389 or 25- 62- 95 -389. A list of names like Rose, Sharon, Maybelle, Rebecca, Rita and Sylvia can be arranged as 3R, 2S and an M to better facilitate memorizing it. However, chunking might be limiting as the brain’s Short-term memory can only take in 5 to 9 new items.

Meditation is another way of improving your memory. Empty your mind of all trash. As your grow in meditation you will have an increased perception of things all around you. Your senses will be heightened as stress is eliminated. A relaxed mind will have the ability to easily absorb new thoughts and ideas thereby improving memory. The downside is you need to learn how to meditate first.

Eat nutritious food and take vitamins B 1-6-12, E, C and folic acid to protect neurons and fight free radicals. Sleep well and exercise.

Memory Loss: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment : Short Term Memory

Article by James S Pendergraft

Loss of memory could either be permanent or partial and it’s quite usual with aging. The memory loss all of a sudden is normally a result of the brain trauma and it might be partial or permanent. While the loss of memory is caused by medical conditions for example Alzheimer’s, the loss of memory is generally slow and leads to be permanent. Brain trauma couldn’t be the only reason for unexpected loss of memory. It might appear as side-effect of some medicines that are used as treatment for folks who are undergoing hypercholesterolemia. The memory is affected by the damage that might crop up in various parts of the brain like hippocampus, medial temporal lobe, frontal lobes and cortex. Damaging any of these parts might result in specific disorders in the courses of restoring and acquiring memory. For example, injure to the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe could destroy the ability to attain new declarative memories while injure to the storage areas in cortex could destroy recovery of old memories and obstruct of fresh memories.

From forgetting names and dates, managing odd jobs and forgetting the intention, simply getting lost, to having problems in carrying out the usual tasks like baking, driving, symptoms of loss of memory differ from one person to another. They actually occur little by little and might differ in intensity depending on the condition that causes it. Confusion or decreased alertness might be the first sign of memory loss and as well a grave disease, mostly in older people. The important distressing symptoms aren’t those linked to things that most people forget to do.

A few people might have issues in mixing up words for items or else could have difficulty in understanding or participating in a conversation. Being unable to make a very simple decision could imply that something isn’t working as it must and ought to seek medical advice. Whether a person is experiencing memory loss isn’t just decided based only on one’s symptoms. In turn to diagnose the state a doctor would find a thorough medical background of the patient. They would as well conduct numerous neuropsychological tests that would focus on their memory functions. Various other medical tests like an MRI, or a CT scan or electroencephalography could be conducted so as to find out a precise diagnosis.

The major type of loss of memory is short-term memory. Short-term memory is just memory from a few seconds to minutes ago. Loss of memory cannot be treated unless it’s caused by a reversible state. The treatment is generally based on the main cause of the state. While loss of memory is a sign of more severe illness, it might be reversed when the actual state is recognized and treated. Memory loss because of aging cannot be treated however the symptoms might be improved by taking up the preventive measures. Curing mild instances of memory loss might comprise of herbal medicines or else a change in the way of life. The additional dietary supplement with long and quality sleep and keeping away from possible threat factors might as well improve the normal conditions of patients. The support from the family plays a vital role in the treatment of memory loss. The members of the family are generally encouraged to take individual orientation sessions on how to deal with their sick relative and on how to help them improve their state.

Abortion Clinic. Dr. James S. Pendergraft opened the Orlando Women’s Center in March 1996 to provide a full range of health care for women, including abortion clinic, physical examinations, family planning and counseling.

Computer memory might be one of the more commonly purchased items among end users, but that doesn’t mean that its’ exact role is clear to most individuals. Quite often, users confuse memory with hard drive space, processing power and other aspects by which a machine is rated in casual conversation. Memory is a specific component and it is not interchangeable with any other part of a computer’s hardware compliment. Understanding exactly what computer memory does can make it much easier to navigate one’s choices when one is faced with the task of purchasing more for their computer.

Scratchpad, closet space, short-term memory: these terms are all used to describe the function of computer memory in some examples. In reality, memory’s function somewhat mimics all of these things. Computer memory is limited in size and can only store so many items, much like closet space. Computer memory is also erased and rewritten quickly, as is one’s short term memory. However, it is most like a scratchpad in its primary function. Computer memory allows machines to start a task while other tasks are already underway and to keep each task distinct from one another, which makes it possible to balance their demands on the system.

When one minimizes a window and then opens it again, the speed of that operation largely depends upon their computer memory. When one enters a great deal of information in a spreadsheet program and scrolls up and down the page, their computer memory makes that operation possible at the speeds that are seen today. Computer memory, to some degree, also affects the speed with which programs open and close. It most certainly affects how many programs can be opened up at one time. Every program will consume a fraction of the computer’s total memory.

Computer memory is much different from storage, such as a hard disc, as the data on that device is simply written and remains static on the disc until it is changed or erased. With computer memory, oftentimes called RAM, the data is erased each time the computer is powered down or put into a hibernate state. This is part of the reason that rebooting can sometimes fix a stuck computer. Computer memory is very easy to upgrade and replace, consisting of nothing more than a small circuit board that is snapped into the appropriate socket found on the motherboard.

Robin van Persie scored twice from the penalty spot as Arsenal staged a remarkable comeback to knock Aston Villa out of the FA Cup. Villa led 2-0 at the break through a Richard Dunne header and a finish from an acute angle by Darren Bent. But three goals in seven minutes turned the tie upside down, Van Persie making it 2-1 after Dunne fouled Aaron Ramsey. Theo Walcott levelled before Van Persie sealed victory with a second spotkick after Bent’s foul on Laurent Koscielny. Arsenal, 10-times winners of the FA Cup, will now visit the winners of next week’s Middlesbrough-Sunderland fourth-round replay. As for Villa, manager Alex McLeish will be wondering how on earth his side lost from a winning position. McLeish denied Arsenal a first trophy since 2005 11 months ago when he steered Birmingham City to a famous win over the Gunners in last season’s Carling Cup final. But the Scot was the one left shell-shocked this time as Arsenal staged a magnificent fightback. The Gunners were in desperate need of a lift after losing three straight league games, and the early exchanges suggested they were determined to make amends for their recent poor form. Villa keeper Shay Given was forced into a stunning fifth minute save to keep out Thomas Vermaelen’s 30-yard thunderbolt before Walcott was guilty of slicing a glorious opportunity wide. The England international skipped past a challenge after Tomas Rosicky’s 13th minute pass, but Walcott lost his composure at the crucial moment. Villa had

In Part I of Memory and Aging, I explained to you how growing older can affect your memory. I also gave you some brain-healthy things you can do to keep that incredible shoulder-top computer retrieving all its data well into your advanced years.

Here in Part II, I would like to talk to you about prescription drugs, and the impact they can have on your brain function and your memory. Then we’ll talk about some natural supplements and how they can help you retain more of your memory.

Each category of prescription drugs has a multitude of individual drugs that can be prescribed to you for common ailments like sinus problems, infections, insomnia, nausea, etc. The effects on your memory can range from temporary short-term memory lapses to broad, long-term memory wipe outs.In the list below, I’ve included the types of prescription drugs that can damage your memory.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS THAT CAN CAUSE MEMORY LOSS

AnalgesicsAnesthetics AntianxietyAntidepressantsAntibioticsAntihistamines Antihypertensives Anti-Seizure medicationsHormones/steroidsNausea Drugs Parkinson Disease DrugsSleep Aids RitalinStatins

Mother Nature To The Rescue

With all the pharmaceutical drugs out there that threaten to damage your brain and your memory, the good news is that there are several vitamins and natural, herbal-derived products that have brain-health preserving and memory boosting properties!

The most significant group of vitamins that enhance brain health and memory are the B vitamins, especially B6, B9 (folic acid), B12, citicoline. B vitamins protect the nerve sheath covering brain cells. They pulverize homocysteine, a nerve cell toxin, and carry oxygen. A healthy diet filled with citrus fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables, and/or supplement, aids good brain function.

Next, antioxidants like Vitamin C, E, and beta carotene, give critical protection to brain tissue by dissolving free redicals that cause damaging oxidation. These nutrients can be found in citrus fruits, yams, and wheat germ/oil and are also a staple of good vitamin supplements.

Beneficial fatty oils, like Omega-3 fish oil, help protect the brain cells by neutralizing inflammation and cholesterol deposits. Fatty fish like salmon or fish oil supplements of 1,000 mg a day ensures optimal brain levels of this nutrient.

Below, I’ve listed several, herbal-derived supplements that are beneficial to your memory.

NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS THAT HELP IMPROVE MEMORY

Alpha GPC– supports attention, focus, recall, and other brain functions.

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) – supports concentration and focus.

CoQ10 – helps with overall body energy, supports concentration and memory.

DMAE – helps with alertness and concentration.

Gingko biloba – improves blood/oxygen flow to the brain.

Huperzine A – aids age related memory loss; boosts short-term memory.

L-Carnitine– an amino acid that aids brain energy.

L-Glutamine – works as a brain transmitter, aids concentration and alertness.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom – enhances mental performance. Aids in nerve/brain cell growth.

Vinpocetine – improves blood flow to memory storage center of brain.

What You Can Do

As I’ve discussed here, you don’t have to be resigned to memory loss. There are some excellent natural sources of supplements, as well as vitamins, available that can help keep your brain and memory functioning optimally.

If you take any of the classes of prescription drugs noted here and seem to be experiencing memory problems, please contact your physician to discuss your concerns.

Short Term Memory : Memory Games and Activities for Seniors

Article by Lisa Smith

It’s important that as people age they find ways to keep both their body and mind sharp. Sandy Gibson, the Director of Nursing with BrightStar of Chicago, put together a great list of games and activities to do with seniors to help with memory. These are great exercises for those suffering from dementia.

Memory Card Game

This classic card game is a great way to exercise memory. Lay all the cards from a deck face down in a 13 x 4 pattern. The first player turns two cards over at random. If they are a match, he gets to keep them and go again. If they are different numbers, he must turn them back over and it is the next player’s turn. As more and more cards are revealed, players are forced to remember where certain cards are in the grid. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.

Simon Says

Simon Says exercises reflex skills and memory. It is appropriate for seniors already experiencing memory loss. Stand at the front of the room. Do an action, such as putting your hands on your head. Describe the action, introducing it with “Simon says.” For example, “Simon says put your hands on your head.” The participants must imitate your actions until you describe a gesture you are doing without saying “Simon says.” Anyone who does the gesture is out. The game requires that seniors quickly recall the names of body parts.

Name That Tune

This game is great for exercising and testing long-term memory. Assemble various recordings of songs that were popular when today’s seniors were young. Play a short clip from a song. Participants must write down the name of the song and the artist. Play 10-15 different songs. Announce the answers one by one. The participant with the highest number of correct responses wins.

Memory Circle

This game strengthens both long- and short-term memory. Assemble a group of senior citizens in a circle. Go around the circle and have participants share memories of a favorite hobby or activity from their childhood. Once each person has had a chance to share, go around the circle again. This time, have each person recount the same memory of another participant. Continue until everyone has had a chance to recount someone else’s memory

Tech Games

In the age of technology and gadgets, seniors can benefit from a host of games. The Nintendo DS is a hand-held game console. Among the games available for it is “Brain Age/Brain Age 2,” a game with nine puzzles, multi-level Sudoku rounds and speed counting memory tests. Another, “Clubhouse Games,” offers 40 classic senior-friendly games like “Texas Hold ‘Em,” backgammon, checkers, bowling, billiards and darts. These particular activities will challenge a senior’s speed, dexterity, memory and mental focus.

Traditional Games

You can never go wrong with traditional games that exercise mental focus and memory. Brain teasers, crossword puzzles, bingo boards and puzzles are available in large print and large sizes to make it easier for seniors to handle, see and play.

Group Fun

Trivia games for seniors can be a group activity that allows them to develop a sense of teamwork while bonding with their peers. Such games alleviate loneliness, a state of being that triggers depression, anxiety and dementia in seniors, according to The Senior Review. Trivia games can be especially enjoyable for seniors knowledgeable on subjects such as music, movies, history, art and sports.

Board Games

Board games such as chess, Monopoly, and even children’s games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders help improve the short-term memory of seniors. Board games provide seniors a way to assist their peers, giving them a sense of helpfulness. Board games with basic play rules are less about competitiveness and more about having fun and encouraging each player to do his best.

Outdoor Games

Other than getting fresh air and exercise, there are plenty of games to play with seniors outside. Depending on the physical fitness level of the senior, games such as Red Light Green Light, Simon Says, Freeze Tag, sports games or a scavenger hunt are examples of games to get senior citizens outdoors and are free to play.

Arts and Crafts

With items that you already have, you can do arts and crafts with your senior. According to the Seniors Love to Know website, scrap booking is a fun way to gather your photos and mementos together and is a great way to organize your treasures. Drawing and sketching can also be enjoyable and to make it a game, you can play Pictionary or have contests based on what picture looks the most realistic, the most bizarre, the most creative, etc.

Card Games

Card games are free and can be fun for people of all ages. There are a variety of different card games to choose from and the flexibility of cards means that you can make up your own games if you choose. Find a game your senior wants to play or you can get ideas from the Games Info Depot website and play popular games such as Old Maid, Bridge, Poker, BlackJack and Cribbage.

Bingo

Get out the bingo cards, bingo balls and bingo markers, and let the seniors enjoy a couple of games of bingo. For added fun, create the bingo cards and markers to match the nearest holiday. If Halloween is coming up, use bingo cards with pictures of bats, scarecrows, candy and scary masks. The seniors can use candy corns as bingo markers and instead of saying “Bingo,” have them shout, “Happy Halloween.” Do the same for Valentine’s Day, and use conversation hearts as bingo markers. Award the game winners with holiday-themed prizes.

Marshmallow Toss

Hang a wreath or circle ring from the ceiling that is approximately 6 inches in diameter. Dust several large marshmallows with flour to keep them from getting sticky. Mark a standing line 10 feet from the wreath or circle. Give each senior 10 marshmallows to try to toss through the wreath or ring. Award a prize to each senior who makes a marshmallow through the ring. For added decoration, make the ring heart-shaped for Valentine’s Day; use a holiday wreath for Christmas; and use a Halloween-themed wreath for Halloween. If you do not have marshmallows, play this game with beanbags.

Balloon Volleyball

Use a small rope to hang across a room. The seniors can sit in chairs or stand to play a game of balloon volleyball. Divide the seniors into two teams. Each team will get on one side of the rope. The seniors will hit the balloon back and forth like volleyball. Keep score, and the first team to score 10 points wins the game. For another balloon game, give each senior a balloon and see who can hit the balloon in the air the longest amount of time.

Brain and Mind Games

Seniors require mental stimulation and games that improve the brain and memory skills are beneficial. The Nursing Home Activities Resource website suggests games such as crossword puzzles, board games such as chess, Sudoku, Trivia games and jigsaw puzzles. To make these games free, play board games you already own and you can print out free puzzles and games from websites online or make your own!

Vacation Game

Have several people sit in a circle. Start the game by saying, “I am going on a trip to Florida and in my suitcase I am taking a shirt.” Ask the person beside you to say the same thing but add another item to the suitcase. The person will say, “I am going on a trip to Florida and in my suitcase I am taking a shirt and a [fill in the blank].” Continue to play around the circle until it comes back to you. You end the game by reciting the original saying and remembering all the items added to the suitcase.

Room Memorization

Ask a senior to look around a room they are familiar with like a bedroom, then ask the person to leave the room for a minute. Switch a few things in the room or hide some things. Ask the senior to return and tell you what has moved or what is missing.

Daily Journals

Help seniors write daily journals at the end of each day. Ask them to remember each thing they did and write each thing down. Tell them to visualize their day if they are having trouble remembering the things they did. Make a game of it by trying to remember hour by hour. Ask them to remember more each day than they did the day before. See who can remember the most details.

Human Brain Memory – How The Human Brain Memory Can Be Used Effectively : Short Term Memory

Article by Greg Frost

What is David’s number? Where did you keep your spectacles? What’s your neighbors’ family name? Are all these questions bothering you? Then this call for some workout on your brain memory. Being forgetful does not mean that you are just getting older. It just means that you have yet to give your brain the right amount of workout. The ability to keep your brain memory fresh and sparkling new is as good as keeping yourself healthy and in shape. Discover some of the ways on how the human brain memory can be used effectively, for your own advantage.

As days go by, you will soon forgot about the different memories. These memories will just drift away, no matter how hard you try to keep them as a part of you. Your memory also plays a very important role in determining your success in various aspects of life. The ability to have a healthy mind and physique will help to ensure that you will have a fair share of success too.

The human brain is a complex entity. For decades, scientists have tried to explain how to brain works, but time and again, they failed. But basically, the human brain memory functions on these 2 components – short term memory and long term memory.

The short-term memory is the kind of memory that shadows off in the shortest period of time. It just used to recall the things that happen just after we experienced it. For example, after watching a movie, you are able to recall it to your friends, just by using the power of your short-term memory. Short-term memory also applies when you are reading sentences from a book or magazine. This also means that short-term memory has a limit to the amount of information that it is able to load in. So, in order to use your short-term memory effectively, try not to clump long pieces of information together. You can use hyphens and hyphenate your phone numbers such that it is easier to remember.

The more important part of your brain memory would be the long-term memory. Long-term memory is responsible for storing all information -from your childhood days until the day you held your first grandson.

Both short term and long term memory can be sustained simply by doing various mind exercises. Otherwise, you can start now by using mind games that involve memory work. Furthermore, these mind games carries many other advantages like promoting strategic planning, visual workout, logic and problem solving techniques.

Other techniques would also to develop photographic memory. There are plenty of ways to go about doing this. One of them is to use subliminal products that help to tune the brain to develop the ability to have photographic memory. The subliminal and self-hypnosis products are highly recommended for those who are looking for a fast and easy technique to developing the right skills.

There is of course other mind training tricks out there. Regardless of the method or technique that you use, what is more important is that you are constantly doing mind exercises to make sure that you are able to sustain your human brain memory as the brain is the key operator that helps us to function properly.

Memory Improvement Made Easy : Short Term Memory

Article by Windsor Harris

Memory improvement techniques are a great help to those of us who suffer from forgetfulness and the resulting chaos in our daily lives. Memory can be defined as the ability to store, retain, and recall information and experiences. This ability to connect individual incidents, names, faces and locations in the context of time and to bring them together in a cohesive whole in the shape of memories is essential to living a full and satisfying life.

Memory Systems and Processes

The brain has three main memory systems: sensory memory, short term memory and long term memory. Sensory memory refers to the ability to accurately retain sensory impressions (visual, auditory and so on) on a short-term basis. The capacity of sensory memory is approximately twelve items, but it degrades very quickly and it is not possible to improve memory of this type.

Short-term memory (STM) also known as the “primary” or “active memory” refers to the brain’s capacity to hold a small amount of information in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. It usually holds around seven pieces of data and lasts approximately 12-15 seconds depending on the person.

Finally, there is the long term memory. As the name suggests, this is the information that the brain processes from the short term memory and stores for later use.

Some Helpful Memory Improvement Tips

Most memory development systems work on either the short term or the long term memories and the process by which one is converted into the other. There are a number of easily learnt memory improvement techniques that can help you enhance this process of transferring information from the short-term to the long-term memories. These include:

* Chunking: Chunking is a memory development system that is helpful in increasing the effectiveness of the short-term memory. In Chunking, a person organizes material into meaningful groups so that they are more easily recallable.

* For example, when attempting to remember a phone number, rather than trying to remember the entire string of 10 digits, you can group the digits into three chunks: the area code, a three-digit chunk and lastly a four-digit chunk. With constant practice and the usage of existing information in long-term memory, chunking can greatly improve the short-term memory.

* Short-term memory improvement exercises: these are simple, fun exercises that act as a sort of memory workout. They help maintain your existing memory levels and also prevent further memory loss.

* For instance, play a simple game of match-up. Match-up is an easy single player memory game involving 20 to 40 matched pairs of cards. The game involves shuffling the cards and laying them face down on a table in rows. Once the cards are laid out, flip over a card and try to find its match. If no match is found, flip both cards back, memorize their positions and try again. Continue this process until you have matched up all the cards.

To conclude, our memory is what enables us to recall information that we have learned or experienced, shaping our thoughts and characters and making us who we are. However, age and the stress of everyday life often cause the memory to deteriorate. Memory improvement exercises and techniques help reverse the wear of the memory and keep the brain in top condition.

Short Term Effects of Cannabis Use : Short Term Memory

Article by Sam Qam

Aside from legal drugs, such as alcohol, tobacco and caffeine, cannabis is the most widely used recreational drug in the world. Cannabis has a history dating back to the 28th century BC throughout which it has been used both medicinally and recreationally. Initially used in China for its medicinal qualities it quickly spread throughout the world and was put to a whole host of uses. This article aims to look at some of the short term effects that cannabis can have on recreational users.PsychoactiveThe best known short term effects of cannabis are those that are psychoactive. Psychoactive effects vary from person to person and use to use and generally are referred to as a ‘high’. Some of these effects are typically perceived to be positive, such as: becoming relaxed, introspection, euphoria, increased creativity and heightened awareness of taste, colour and music. These are reasons that marijuana is so commonly used as a recreational drug. However not all of the psychoactive effects are positive; short term memory loss, anxiety and paranoia are all common side effects, particularly when high doses are consumed.SomaticSomatic effects are those that are manifested physically by the body. Cannabis use causes a range of short term somatic effects. Most of these are deemed to be negative, such as ‘dry mouth’ increased heart rate, bloodshot eyes and a feeling of pressure in the eyes. Cannabis use also causes muscle relaxation which can help relieve pain in MS patients and is one of the main reasons that it is still used medicinally.Added SubstancesAs cannabis is illegal throughout the majority of the world there is no regulating of the quality of the product. Unscrupulous dealers are common and will often add extra substances to cannabis when it is in resin form, or add glass beads to the dried flowers which make the plant both weigh more and appear to have an increased quantity of THC crystals. These added chemicals can often add or alter side effects and users need to be extremely careful of what they are ingesting.DurationThe length of time that cannabis effects last for can vary greatly based on the concentrations of THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol; the most active chemical in the plant) and the method of consumption. When marijuana is smoked the effects will typically take effect within a few minutes, peak in the first hour and completely pass within 3-5 hours. If the cannabis is eaten effects can take between one and two hours to kick in and will generally be longer lasting than if the drug is smoked.Like most drugs cannabis has a range of side effects which are both positive and negative. In many countries it is perfectly legal to purchase and possess cannabis seeds, however, unless they are prescribed medical seeds (which are legal in a select number of countries and states), it is illegal to grow the plant or use it as a drug.

You can’t find a subject more interesting, complicated, or puzzling as the human brain. Your own memory is one of nature’s great mysteries. If you are curious, you can find many types of information on the subject. Memory theories range from how to transform short-term into long-term memory, to what foods will help memory. Even the poets find memory evocative and mysterious.

One of the greatest puzzles is the reason for shortfalls in short-term memory. What do the neurologists have to say about this perennial problem? Why does human memory fail us when we try to remember the name of someone we met yesterday–yet we remember clearly the name of our first grade teacher? Why do we remember an obscure chemical from our biology text, yet forget other, more straightforward things? And why do we struggle so hard to remember a fact for an exam?

Do you forget things just now and then? Or do you have an unwanted reputation for absent-mindedness? Here are some tips to help you either way.

Why do we forget?

There is no one culprit for memory loss. Instead, there are a handful of reasons for memory problems. For instance, perhaps you’ve had more memory problems since the onset migraine headaches. Researchers show that people with severe headaches or migraines suffer from a “migraine stupor'” This is a feeling of forgetfulness that starts when a migraine or strong headache begins, and afterwards. The stupor leaves the person feeling somewhat confused and bewildered.

Lifestyle issues can also impact your memory. Heavy drug and alcohol use can alter human memory. Heavy drug use, for instance, can substantially reduce the ability to recall information and memories. This results from the action of hallucinogenic substances contained in the drug. Excess consumption of alcohol can also cause permanent memory issues. Permanent brain cell damage can result in the drinker’s inabilities to remember important dates—like your birthday—and significant facts.

Physical diseases and bodily changes can be major causes of reduced memory power. As soon as someone becomes forgetful, their friends and family members bring up the dreaded word “Alzheimer’s Disease.” While Alzheimer’s does cause damage to the brain’s ability to remember, other conditions do too. For instance, lowered thyroid levels—hypothyroidism—is another culprit. Reduced thyroid hormones cause lapses in memory, since we need these hormones for the brain to stay active, alert, and healthy. Women also experience memory issues when they go through menopause. This period changes many hormone levels, wreaking havoc with many memory skills.

Then there are head injuries and traumas. This is a popular plot line in TV shows and movies. However, amnesia is a much less common cause of memory loss than the conditions mentioned above.
