Brain Training Online : Brain Training

Article by Jeffery Gwin

Adrian Owen of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit and his colleagues first measured participants’ baseline performance on a battery of freely available ‘benchmark’ tests. Included were measures of reasoning, verbal short-term memory, spatial working memory and paired-associates learning (a test of longer-term verbal memory).

The participants, who had an average age of 39, then formed three groups. The first group spent six weeks, for a minimum of ten minutes a day, three times a week, performing computerised training tasks in reasoning, planning and problem solving. The second group spent the same time training on a broader range of tests of short-term memory, attention, visuospatial processing and mathematics, similar to those found in commercial brain training products. For both brain training groups, the tasks increased in difficulty in line with any gains in participant performance. The final, control group spent the same time using the internet to find answers to obscure quiz questions.

Participants in all groups showed improvements on the specific tasks included in their training regimens, but a repeat of the benchmark performance tests used at the study outset showed that these benefits had not generalised, not even when the training tests and benchmark tests involved similar cognitive processes.

The vanishingly modest transferable benefits of brain training that were observed, were no greater than those found in the control group after they’d spent time Googling the answers to obscure general knowledge questions. To take one example, consider changes to the number of digits participants could hold in memory. At the study end, the control group participants could remember, on average, two-tenths of a digit more than they could at the study outset. What about participants in the second brain training group? Their digit memory increased, on average, by a mere three-hundreths of a digit – actually less than the control group.

‘These results provide no evidence for any generalised improvements in cognitive function following brain training in a large sample of healthy adults,’ the researchers said.

What about the possibility that the training regimens in the current study weren’t long enough to generate transferable benefits? This seems unlikely because there was a negligible link between the number of training sessions completed and the amount of observed transferable benefit. ‘That said,’ the researchers admitted, ‘the possibility that an even more extensive training regime may have eventually produced an effect cannot be excluded’.

The results of this study will be shared and discussed on Bang Goes The Theory on BBC One at 9pm on 21 April and on the BBC’s Lab UK website.

The new findings are just the latest to cast doubt on the value of commercial brain training products. A 2008 investigation by the consumer charity Which? concluded that ‘none of the claims [of commercial brain training products] are supported by peer-reviewed research published in a recognised scientific journal and involving the specific product’. The Which? investigators, Adrian Owen among them, recommended a healthy diet, physical exercise and challenging mental activities, including learning a new instrument or language, or completing crosswords, as the most effective ways to maintain a healthy mind.

Brain Training Has long been Around For Ages : Brain Training

Article by Danielle Deercove

So, old age has began to creep up. The brain feels mushy and befuddled. The memory one had as a kid could be starting to fade as time goes on. Straightforward causal effects that had been once uncomplicated to figure out might be beginning to get a little harder to deduce. Standard doctor visits display normal, wholesome brain patterns but the dropping battle with age is something all people today have to confront. Keeping the mind sharp is really a work for brain training.

Because the day of birth, people begin training their brain. There are a myriad of techniques to do this. Most folks would concur that an education is by far the most frequent method to assistance brain teaching. Reading through, writing and arithmetic are a staple of nearly all educational methods all through the world. Some individuals have an aptitude for these topics far more than other people but most would agree that a few of the most basic elements are some thing that everyone, hopefully, can grasp. Nonetheless, most would also concur that not everyone has the exact same capability or aptitude that everybody else has and as a result is what provides each individual their set of strengths and weaknesses.

As time goes on along with the body ages, some people may possibly feel the will need for brain coaching to be able to retain the information and facts that they as soon as had. There are numerous video games for your brain that can aid, especially in today’s modern day globe of computers and technology. Using the advent of video clip games, it’s simpler than ever to help train the brain. Sort into any search engine the words, “brain games” and one can discover a plethora of games that will aid retain memory or improve mathematical abilities. Most instances these video games are so entertaining that some never observe that they’re really teaching the brain.

Most men and women would concur that brain training is some thing that everybody must perform. It’s a tragedy to believe that many people today inside the world nonetheless don’t have a grade school training. Very simple reasoning need to tell persons that training the brain is what sets humanity apart from the animal kingdom. The usage of the brain and also the discipline concerned with restraint in the direction of logical reasoning is what would make a person human. In practically every single culture, the capacity to reason can be a valued trait. Individuals flock to an individual who is wise. Most would agree that a person who trains their brain can have a higher capacity for reason than the typical individual who doesn’t.

Top 10 Brain Training Future Trends: New Mind/Body Focus, Brain Trainers, and More : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

In an emerging, dynamic, high growth market, like brain training, it is difficult to make precise projections. But, we can observe a number of trends that executives, consumers, public policy makers, and the media should watch closely in the coming years, as brain fitness and training becomes mainstream, new brain trainers appear, and an ecosystem grows around it.

1. We predict an increased emphasis on brain maintenance in locations ranging from retirement communities to gyms. As a computer-savvy baby boomer population looks for ways to stay mentally fit, brain fitness, or brain training, is becoming part of their vocabulary and concern.

2. Physical and mental exercise will be better integrated. Physical exercise has been shown to increase the rate of neurogenesis, whereas mental exercise helps ensure the survival of any newly created neurons. Today both activities usually take place in very different settings: the former, in health clubs, the later, in universities. We predict that the borders between them will become more diffuse. Expect new programs such as brain fitness podcasts that allow us to train working memory as we jog or exercise bikes with built-in brain games.

3. Watch for a broad government initiative, similar to the one JFK led, to increase the public awareness of the need for brain fitness. It is becoming more widely understood by the medical and policy community that a combination of physical exercise, nutrition, mental exercise and stress management can help us maintain our brain health as we age. As politicians and policy makers look for ways to delay the onset of Alzheimer-related symptoms of our aging population, new initiatives may be launched.

4. Better and more widely available assessments of cognitive function will serve as objective baselines to measure the impact of cognitive training interventions. There will also likely be better diagnostic tests to identify early Alzheimer’s symptoms, for example. Reliable diagnostic assessments of cognitive abilities will help move this field forward just as jumping on a scale tells you if your physical fitness and diet program is working.

5. Improved computer-based tools will come to market. The growing pipeline of research studies will enable the market leaders and new entrants to refine existing tools and devise new ones. More clinical studies will show the benefits of brain fitness programs to address specific clinical conditions and learning disabilities.

6. Low tech options will play an increasing role in the brain fitness field. Already, increasing research is showing the cognitive value and brain plasticity impact of interventions such as meditation and cognitive therapy. More research and wider applications will help refine our understanding of when and how they can be most helpful.

7. Doctors and pharmacists will help patients navigate through the overwhelming range of available products and interpret the results of cognitive assessments. This will require significant professional development efforts, given that most doctors today were trained under a very different understanding of the brain than the one we have today.

8. Insurance companies will introduce incentives for members to encourage healthy aging. Many insurance plans today include rewards for members who, for example, voluntarily take health-related questionnaires that enable them to identify steps to take to improve health. Increasingly, brain-related lifestyle factors will become part of these incentivized interventions.

9. Investments in new cognitive interventions for the U.S. military will be commercialized. As the military increasingly funds research to improve the diagnostic and treatment of problems such as PTSD and TBI, the resulting products will ultimately find commercial uses.

10. Brain training will be added to corporate wellness and leadership initiatives. Large employers with existing corporate wellness and leadership programs will introduce brain fitness specific programs aimed not only at improved health outcomes but also at increased productivity and cognitive performance in the workplace.

Finally, here goes some food for thought: Which prediction sounds more surprising? which one would you add?

Brain Training Games: How To Find The Good Ones : Brain Training

Article by Brian Jones

Brain Training Games are one of the hottest trends in the market today. Seldom can you turn on the television without being reminded of the fears of mental decline, Alzheimer’s or the need for optimum brain functioning. The answer to these problems by some companies has been the creation of brain training games. These are designed to give you daily or weekly training that works at keeping your mind working at a high level. Unfortunately, not all these games offer the same results. For this reason, we have put together a list of tips to help you decide which games will give you the results you are looking for:

1. Look for scientific backing. Although some scientific studies can be misleading, most of the brain training games that highlight how their games have improved people’s mental skills in studies are far more likely to be sound. Avoid those brain training games where they appear to be more entertainment focused. In other words, are they promoting the game as a game or as actually delivering brain improvement? This will tell you a lot about what they feel the true value is in the game.

2. Check out what skills they are trying to develop.Read the literature of the brain training games to see which mental skills they are trying to develop and how they attempt to do so. This sophistication of their answers here should give you a good indication of their true intentions and it also will let you make a value judgment over whether the games can really improve those skills.

3. Try out the demo games and determine if you think your skills are improved. There is no substitute for actually trying out the games. For most of the online games, you can find demos of games the company makes. Try out these games after reading up on what skills these games are supposed to improve upon. After playing several different demo games from different companies, ask yourself which ones you think actually challenged you in that certain skill. Your response here will be very telling as to whether you think the brain training game can help you get more brain improvement in this area down the road. These thoughts can also be compared with other people’s opinions as mentioned in #4.

4. Read reviews to determine if people are getting results. One of the greatest resources at your disposal is people’s willingness to tell you over the Internet whether they believe a certain game actually delivers results. This critical information can be found on reviews of games, message boards, or in the comments on some video game websites. This information should be pored over to give you a better idea of the game’s true value. If you are hearing comments like the game continued to be more challenging and my brain hurt after doing it, odds are these games are delivering the results you are looking for.

As you can, finding a good brain training game is not as difficult as it might first appear. By being willing to look behind the marketing hustle, you should be able to find you some brain training games that will give you results that truly deliver brain improvement.

Brain Training Zox Pro System : Brain Training

Article by Kieth Vitou

There is much research about what parts of the brain light up when people are thinking, feeling or desiring something. We have also extended our knowledge of the role of the brain in producing the hormones, neurotransmitters and other chemicals that affect moods and behavioral responses. What are we to make of all this?

There seem to be limitations to what we can learn about people simply by studying their brain activity. Perhaps it is true that certain characteristic spots light up when people report feeling, desiring or thinking something. However, it is always possible to have a feeling that does not correspond to the normal spot lighting up. Similarly, a spot may light up but without the corresponding report.

Another limitation seems to be that no matter how well grounded our correlations become, linking brain states with mental states, we cannot read off the object of a thought, feeling or desire simply by looking at a brain lighting up. For example, we might find a strong correlation between people reporting feeling afraid and the lighting up of a certain portion of the brain. We might even become confident that we can say that the subject is feeling fear just by looking at the brain activity. Nevertheless, we cannot say just what the person is afraid of. Thought is intentional activity, and we cannot arrive at the object of an intention solely by looking at the brain.

While these limitations exist, what we are leaning about the brain does affect our understanding of ourselves as thinking and learning beings. The Socratic injunction to ‘Know Thyself’ just got more complicated. The old idea that the brain stops changing early in life has given way to the idea of the ‘neuroplasticity’ of the brain. The brain changes. Can we train the brain to work better?

Brains are like muscles. We need nourishment and exercise to keep them in shape. We can develop different sets of muscles and change our physical shape over time. Now think of the brain in the same way. We need to feed and exercise the body to keep our brains healthy. Through brain training we may be able to develop new ‘second’ natures, and reprogram our responses to things, thus, over time, changing the neural networks in our brains.

New habits of mind, perception and response need time and repetition to become ingrained. It is said that one needs six weeks or so to break one habit and establish another. During this time, our brains adapt to the change we are making in our lives.

One area of brain activity is of great potential interest. This is the action of the amygdala, in the medial temporal lobe. While our understanding of this area is not complete, the amygdala is part of the story of the fight or flight response, and ‘flying off the handle’ in general. When a tiger comes around the corner, one is running before making any conscious choice. It is an immediate response. If there were ways to prevent the ancient amygdala from carrying out some of its immediate, unthinking reactions, and put a thought process between the stimulus and the response, we could, perhaps, increase our control over our actions and emotional responses. Getting a grip the amygdala might help people shape a thought-mediated response to events rather than blindly reacting to them.

All this is a little fanciful, I admit, but to pursue the theme a bit further, consider the new job opportunities that may open up for certified ‘Brain Trainers.’ They would have to know about the effects of diet and exercise on brain function, as well as amygdala training techniques. In addition, I speculate that meditation will be part of a brain training regime. Imaging studies show that the brains of experienced meditators differ from non-meditators. Their meditation predictably produces beneficial brain waves of a type that non-meditators do not. The practice calms a person who simply breathes and attends to the moment as it unrolls. Training the brain may become part of the good life and contribute to the art of living. Perhaps integrating an awareness of brain chemistry and function into our self-understanding will contribute to the philosophical goal of self-knowledge.

Brain Training to Succeed in Life : Brain Training

Article by George R. Swisher

The world is perpetually in motion, bringing about ever increasing challenges that test your ability to overpower obstacles and your will to thrive, whether in business, in sports or in your personal life. Competition is fiercer than before, there are fewer opportunities and more hurdles in your path. There really is no level playing field. There are a hanful of people who have an advantage over the majority even before the competition starts and you have to do something about it. You need to score first, because only then you would have the advantage!

Not too long ago, you could outpower and beat your competitor with sheer muscle. These days though, brute force by itself doesn’t warrant success. You require something else. You need to outfox your rivals if you really want to come out on top. You’ve probably trained your muscles enough already. It’s time to shift our focus and start training our brain.

You could train your brain in many numerous ways. You could use meditation, do word puzzles or try memory exercises, but then again these methods usually take too long to make a difference and you’d probably like to see short term results. There is an alternative, however, to traditional brain training methods: brainwave training.

Brainwaves are electrical impulses that result from neurons in your brain permanently communicating with each other. Neurologists have classified brainwaves according to the different mental processes they associate with. These brainwaves range in frequency from as high as 100 hertz to as low as 0.1 hertz and are called Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.

What’s really relevant about brainwaves, at least in regards to brain training, is that neurologists have found that outside stimuli, such as light and sound, can shape brainwaves to the point that it is possible to induce you into states of relaxation, creativity, productivity by stimulating your brainwaves. You could become smarter, be more creative and have more energy, you could achieve all this and more with brainwave training.

If it were not for brainwave training, you’d have to master meditation techniques to control your brainwaves at will. You could become an apprentice to an enlightened guru or yogi and spend lots of years learning the hidden art of meditation. That is, if you had the time and felt disposed to lead such a life. Brainwave training, on the other hand, enables you to master your brain in as little as six months.

Successful people are always a step or two ahead of the pack. They are mentally sharp and ever alert to take advantage of opportunities and situations that come their way. They are quick to adapt and even quicker to learn, absorbing and retaining new information when others fail to do so. They outwit their competitors because they tap into their brain’s unlimited potential to find solutions to problems that other people just can’t deal with. Chances are most of them act instinctively, not consciously; they just think it’s an innate trait of theirs. But what if somebody could get into their most productive and creative state of mind, at will? What if you could?

Brainwave Training gives you the ability to truly become the master of your brain. Just imagine what you can accomplish once you unleash your brain’s potential. With the right mentality, you could be in the same league of sports champions like Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky or compete head to head with business tycoons such as Steve Jobs and Michael Dell. There is really no stopping you once your brain starts performing at its peak.

The Brain Evolution System or BrainEv, uses specially mastered and engineered sounds to train your brain. It is considered by many to be the most powerful self development tool on earth, because it empowers you to completely control the level at which your brain functions. With BrainEv you can literally learn how enter into whatever mode of thought that you require to achieve your goals with maximum efficiency and creativity. This is a remarkable innovation with which you can now bring about success for yourself.

Is your brain performing at its peak? Are you creative enough, smart enough? To find out how you can tap into your brain’s unlimited potential through Brainwave Training, with the most powerful self development tool on earth, visit BrainEv.net. Don’t Delay

Embark On Brain Training With the Use of Brain Teasers : Brain Training

Article by Thomas Dark

Brain teasers, also known as brain busters, have been largely considered as games that are associated with children. Although they are good for stimulating children’s minds, they are also invaluable when it comes to brain training for the adult brain. In the same vein that exercise benefits your body so does brain training benefit your mind. Brain teasers are one such technique of doing this. Constantly feeding your brain complex riddles ensures that it is suitably stimulated. Brain teasers coupled with subliminal messaging can bring out the best desired results when it comes to enhancing the power of the brain and increasing your memory capacity.

Mental health doctors will expose you to subliminal messages to enable you to change the way your mind thinks. Brain teasers also train your brain to think out of the box and contemplate more unconventional ideas. The use of brain teasers along subliminal messages can prove to be a coup when it comes to brain training. Using both these methods separately ensures you have a better chance of achieving the desired results. With time undergoing this therapy of using subliminal messaging as well as brain busters, your subconscious mind will start to perceive things in a different manner. You may also begin to notice that not only do you have a more positive outlook but you also become quick witted. Eventually, the remnants of the way you used to think before will be wiped away and your newly acquired mind power will enable you to better your life.

The main function of brain busters is to increase the sharpness of your mind. This is done through brain training. Brain busters have also been known to increase the mental acuity of the person as well as improve their focus and their memory. People who are in the habit of exposing their mind to brain busters will realize that they tend to be more productive at work as well as less stressed than the average person. They also tend to be brighter than the average people they may interact with. The most convenient thing about brain training is that it can be tried by anybody. If you find that you are experiencing some difficulty, you can always start with less challenging brain busters before moving on to more challenging ones.

However, brain busters cannot be used to change the thought pattern of someone in an instant. Neither can they be used to transform an addict to a sober person. These situations would require a stronger sense of subliminal messaging. Once the subliminal messaging has helped the person get on the correct path, you can now incorporate brain busters so that you can help them improve their mind power through brain training. With time, you will realize how invaluable brain training is. Once you discover the mind power that you have for self improvement as well as self development, the options are limitless.

Short Term Memory : The Roman Room Method – A Time-Tested Memory Training Technique

Article by Gustavo Horton

Our memory has both short-term and long-term components. The short-term componentstores data for only a short interval. Rarely more than a few minutes. It isdelicate by nature and the brain soon discards it. It is widely believed that thebrain can typically only hold at least 7 short-term memories.

That explains why a person can usually recall their phone number but needs to readfrom their credit card when making a purchase.

A primitive but effective way of remembering information when the long or short-termcomponent isn\’t important is by using the Roman Room System. It provides the basisfor a very effective mnemonic method employed to learn new languages.

To take advantage of this system you should visualize a room that you are familiarwith like your bedroom, living room, dining room, gym, theatre, etc.

* Then visualize where within these rooms the common objects are situated. * Next, you associated the images of those objects with the data you want torecall. * To remember your data, move around the room in your mind and create images ofknown objects and associate them with the different data you need to recall. * You can enhance this technique by going into the fine details and keying datawith smaller objects. * You can even open doors from that room to another room and use items foundthere also.

It should be noted how easy it is to create extensions into the rooms you arevisualizing in your mind and then filling them with objects that would logically bein those rooms. What you are doing is creating rooms to store different categoriesof data in your memory.

The Roman Room System is but one way of linking your map of data in an easy way andyou aren\’t restricted to storing your data in rooms. You can use a town center, aforest or a park and use the objects or landmarks found there to link to your data.

Let\’s look at an example using a bedroom as the basis.

Some of the objects we may see in your bedroom could be:

* A bed * A lamp * A chair * A bookshelf * A DVD player * A phone * A television * A mirror * A photo frame

Now link each of these objects with one piece of information you want to recall suchas vocabulary words in a foreign language, renown scientists, elements of theperiodic table, grocery list, etc.

Then visualize yourself walking into your bedroom. As you walk around the bedroomlook at each object and visualize the data you have linked to it and hold thatpicture in your mind for at least 10 seconds to make sure it is imprinted in yourmemory.

When the time comes that you need to recall the information just walk back into yourbedroom in your mind and activate those associations.

The Roman Room systemis a lot like the Journey method. It works effectively byassociating images and information to remember with common, everyday items. It is anefficient way for storing lists of unrelated information. In contrast the Journeymethod is best for remembering lists of ordered objects.

As with any endeavor to learn something new, practice makes perfect. Boosting ourmemory skills is no different and the methods and techniques we employ will be moreuseful the more we use them. A better memory is not achievable without practice andeffort.

If you take the time and make a concerted effort to practicememory improvement techniques you will find the results that manifest in your dailylife to be very rewarding. You can find more tips and techniques at improve memory
