Brain Training Games? Stick to the real thing… : Brain Training

Before you rush out to buy that new Nintendo DS in order to develop your brainpower and increase your thinking age, you might want to consider whether the brain training games live up to the hype.

A recent study has shown that there is no real proof that the brain training games made popular recently by Nintendo and Dr. Kawashima really have any effect at all and those of us who spend hours staring into a tiny screen, forcing our hands into an arthritic state from clamping the pointer too hard could be wasting our time altogether.

Cognitive neuro-scientist at the University of Birmingham, Dr. Jason Braithwaite said; “There is no conclusive evidence showing that the continued use of these devices is linked to any measurable and general improvements in cognition. While practice at any task should lead to some form of improvement for that specific task, it is not clear that this improvement reflects anything other than a basic learned process for that specific task.”

This leads me to consider how we might be able to improve our brain power and increase our intelligence. For me it’s simple, stick to the same old principles that have helped us over the centuries. Hard work and determination combined with a drive to learn and absorb knowledge at every given opportunity.

Books for a long time have been my staple for learning. I might not always agree with the author, but this only serves to increase my thought process and hopefully help me to see things from an alternative perspective. I often encourage myself to read something that challenges my own thinking and wipes away some of the cobwebs of my mind.

Then of course we have the process of learning from training events, schooling and universities. A lot will say they struggle to learn in these environments. However, it is my belief that when carried out correctly and in keeping with learning needs of all participants, this form of learning cannot be beaten.

The trouble with these methods of learning? Well, they’re not much fun are they (although I’d challenge that point and encourage you to attend a training event that I put together). Latest developments in E-Learning and the more recent ‘serious gaming’ (a combination of business simulations and computer generated learning events) show an encouraging step towards something ‘sexy’ in the training world. However, it is still too early to say whether these methods will eclipse the tried and trusted methods of development. Better I say to incorporate them into a holistic approach to learning and continue to stretch the boundaries of thinking around making learning fun.

You might by now be thinking that I have strayed somewhat from my initial topic of ‘brain training’, surely I can tell the difference between increasing skills and knowledge and training your brain? Well, I’m afraid I can’t. Training your brain is about challenging your thinking, keeping your mind active and learning new ideas.

I suspect the true reason people have welcomed these games with open arms is that they are seen as ‘easy’ a ‘quick fix’, a bit like belts that exercise your stomach while you sit and eat cake or essays that you can download from the internet and hand in to your teacher. The trouble with this approach is that it simply doesn’t work. If you want success, you have to put in the time and effort.

Of course all of this is subjective. I don’t think there’s any harm in these games at all and if it encourages people to learn, then more is the better. I’m sure that brain training games do provide a much needed element of ‘thinking time’ and combined with the other methods mentioned above must surely encourage your brain to memorise and at least challenge thought patterns to some extent and if not? Well, where there’s no harm there’s no worry.

Anyway, I’m off for a few challenging rounds of bowling on the Nintendo Wii…Well, you’ve got to get out every now and then haven’t you?

Memory is the retention of information over a period of time through storage, encoding, and retrieval. For something to be considered memory, you have to take it in, store it, and then retrieve it for use in the future. Memory is a very complex things and it can let you down sometime especially when our trying to remember something, especially during an important test in your life. Also memory can also cause some confusion, especially when two people experience different events.

For example, if two friends went on a trip and one said scenario A happened while the other says that scenario B happened then It could lead to lots of confusion. I think it’s fair to say that most individuals have experienced frustrations when they can’t recall someone’s name or a place that they visit. It’s obvious that memory is not installed like data is in a computer; human memory is a little more concrete.

The initial stage of memory is known as encoding, in which the information is processed for storage. When you are listening to music, or watching television you are encoding information into memory. Some data gets into memory practically effortlessly, while other requires some extensive time to get in there. How information gets stored into data is an interest in psychologist because it tends to vary from individual to individual. When we start encoding we use selective attention which means that we focus on a specific situation while ignoring everything else. It’s like showing undivided attention to a specific factor. Although our brain is magnificent, and is more powerful than a super computer it does has its limits, and it can’t pay attention to everything at once. Divided attention also has an impact on memory, which means that people try to pay attention to too many different things at once. When researchers measure divided attention they have participants to try and remember a list of materials, but they are asked to perform an additional task at the same time. Participants that focus their attention on one single event as opposed to trying and remember numerous of things simultaneously perform a lot better. However simply paying attention to something does not guarantee success with remembering it. Encoding is processed in three different levels. Levels of processing is known as encoding information from shallow to deep and the deeper processing produce better results than the shallow.

Is This Difficult?

If you work smartly and effectively, memory improvement is closer than you might think. It is essential to visualize the thing you want to achieve, and put your mind to fulfilling said achievement.

When you meet the new person we discussed, use their first name back to them, and be confident enough to do so. You will make a better impression and stand a better chance of remembering it.

Many of our fondest memories are stored in the photos we took and preserved. Formerly we were told to preserve not only the picture but also the negative; then other prints could be made. Most youth today don’t even know what a negative is! So what is the best way to preserve those digital memories?

First, don’t be shy about taking plenty of pictures. Since it doesn’t cost any more to take extra pictures, take many more than you want to keep. I recently purchased a 4 gig card for a new camera, in anticipation of a trip to visit friends and relatives. When I got home, it still said I could take another 10,000 pictures without running out of memory!

After collecting your numerous pictures, delete the ones that are not clear, exposure is wrong, people are frowning or in the shadows, or duplicates. You don’t have to keep every one. On the other hand, don’t be shy about keeping one that is special, though it isn’t your best shot. It doesn’t cost any more to keep it.

Photo albums can be set up with computer programs cataloging them by event, date, subject, or any way you want. Be sure to identify each picture clearly. My basement shelf contains a box of slides from my deceased parents but I don’t know the subjects. This frustration can be eliminated by adequate labels.

At this point you may feel you are done with your project. Yet, consider how fragile your preserved memories are. One crash of your hard drive and you may lose everything! Or if you have them on floppies, the media may be obsolete and they are as good as erased! Further, the presence of a random magnetic field could likewise destroy them.

Formerly we thought CDs were more secure. Nothing touched the surface so nothing needed to wear out. However, scratches, breaks, heat damage could all destroy your memories.

Start with this suggestion: store all your pictures additionally in another place and on copies in other parts of your home. How You can Become Smarter

This is the biggest section of the three parts – as it includes all the other foods that haven’t been mentioned yet. The brain uses approximately 20% of the total energy the body uses – same as the amount of oxygen it takes up. For something that is only 2% of the total body mass, it really is a lot. From this fact alone, you can see how much food can affect the brain, and it does.

The brain is picky about what it takes in, as it only uses certain nutrients. Brain cells, the primary component our brains are made out of, require what we call neurotransmitters to carry messages around. Proteins, vitamins and minerals are needed to convert the amino acids that we get from foods we eat into neurotransmitters, but these neurotransmitters can also be found in certain foods from which we can take them in almost directly.

Eating enough of these foods will boost your ability to think faster, better and even raise your IQ level.

If you know what to eat, your mental capabilities will skyrocket.

There are 3 key neurotransmitters that our brain – Acetylcholine, Dopamine & Serotonin – each of which is responsible for certain functions. All of these can be optimized and maximised by eating the correct foods.

The first one, Acetylcholine, is responsible for memory, concentration and focus.

Dopamine is responsible for learning, a very important feature that helps boost intelligent memory. It is the memory that contributes to your overall intelligence.

A discovery made by scientists during the 1990’s reveals cannabis-like molecules and are an important part of the normal chemical balance within our brains. We all have a system of nerve cells that produce naturally occurring cannaboid neurotransmitters that closely resemble thc found in marijuana. Because thc mimics these cannaboid neurotransmitters, our brains are prewired to react to the thc in pot.

THC carried by the blood separates evenly throughout the brain, but surprisingly, the THC molecules quickly come to rest in specific areas of the brain. Why do our brains produce a natural receptor site for the THC? (All mammals have natural receptor sites for THC) There is barely a physiological system in which endocannaboids (natural) are not involved.

The hippocampus (an enfolding of cerebral cortex into the lateral fissure of a cerebral hemisphere, having the shape in cross section of a sea horse) plays a critical role in short-term memory, advancing events in our immediate awareness into long-term memories. Appealing research discovered a new chemical, SR141716A, in a mouse marijuana study. SR141716A does the opposite of the THC in the memory part of your brain. It occupies the cannabinoid receptors that would normally be disrupted by THC. The study revealed elder rats blocking normal enocannabinoid activity prolongs their memory. Our cannabinoid system is designed to modulate the amount of short-term memory we have. Too little short-term memory an we wouldn’t be able to learn anything new. A healthy cannabinoid system is essential for learning and memory.

In another study the cannabinoid blocker SR141716A was administered to rat babies with-in the first 24 hours of life. The baby rats turned off all natural occurring cannibinoid activity. As a result they failed to suckle and eventually died. Apparently one function of our brains endocannabinoid system is to promote the suckling and bonding critical to a mammals survival. Munchies sound familiar? These are linked with comfort foods and emotional experiences from the past.

Short term and Long term Memory

There are two kinds of memory: short term memory and long term memory. Short term memory deals with the ability of the mind to store information for a few seconds or a few minutes. This is the span of time that it takes for you to dial a phone number that you have just looked up or to look at a list of items that you need to buy. Short term memory was meant to be for if you remember every single phone number that you have dialed or remembered all the prices of goods that you saw in stores or remembered every single dish that you have cooked or retained the exact texts of the books that you have read, your brain would have been “full”. Barring injury, disorder or disease, you can improve your ability to retain and recall memory. The more you “work-out” your brain, the better are your chances of improving your retention and recall. There are brain exercises that you can do to improve memory. One example is brushing your teeth using your non-dominant hand or getting dressed with your eyes closed. There are mnemonic techniques that you can use to improve memory. Mnemonics are clues to help you remember things with the use of association by visuals, words, or a sentence. This is part of the reason that rebooting can sometimes fix a stuck computer.
