Many camping enthusiasts go on numerous trips each year. This is understandable, given that every such trip is likely to offer something a little different. But it may also be the case that the memory is of particular camping holidays will tend to blur over time.

This is almost unavoidable, unless you’re fortunate enough to have a photographic memory. For the rest of us, the real trick here is to try and make each camping trip as unique and memorable as we possibly can.

How can we go about achieving this? It’s certainly easy to create a holiday that you will remember for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to be your underlying aim. None of us like to have horrendous holidays that are a real drag. We want to spend time enjoying ourselves.

Ideally, we’re probably looking to return from our trip feeling refreshed and happy. We want to tell other people about the great time that we’ve had while we were away. Although this may not always be achievable, it certainly is something that we’re likely to focus on.

As I think about the many camping trips that I’ve been on, I tend to find that I have the most positive memories of those where I have been fortunate enough to spend time with people that I really get along with. Have a think about your own experiences and consider your own memories.

You may realise that your best holidays were spent at expensive campsites. But I would suggest that it’s much more likely that your own experiences will mirror my own. You’ll probably look back fondly on great times spent with friends and family members.

That’s why it’s clear that the most successful camping holidays are those that are spent with people we are close to. When you’re planning your next trip, don’t forget to think about those who you will be spending time with. This may be the most important element of your camping adventure.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t think carefully about the location of the campsite and about taking the appropriate camping equipment. These are, of course, also important elements. But they’re probably not as vital as the need to spend time with your favourite people.

The Method has become synonymous with many great actors such as Daniel Day Lewis, Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, and Marlon Brando to name but a few. But what is the Method? And what has made it so successful?

Below are practical exercises from the technique that clarify some of the tools used by Method actors.

1. Develop Your Concentration

A high level of concentration is essential to enable top quality acting. Concentration triggers your belief, impulses and imagination.

Concentration is not abstract. Often you will hear teachers or directors telling actors to concentrate and focus, but what on? You have to concentrate on something real and something specific this evokes real thought. Not phony or pretend thinking, but real thought.

The first exercise we tackle in the Method to build concentration and belief in what we are doing on stage, is the Sense Memory exercise.

2. Sense Memory Exercise

It is understood that we perceive the world through our senses. We see, we hear, we smell, we touch, we taste. This is what stimulates us as human beings. It’s also understood that the memory of these senses can affect us. We have all felt hungry and thought of our favorite food and started to salivate, or heard a song that has reminded us of a relationship we once had. Our memories are strongly linked to our senses.

To develop your concentration and sense memory, begin with a simple exercise.

The Breakfast Drink – Recall what you drink first thing in the morning in intricate detail. Close your eyes and recreate in your mind’s eye the room that you have the drink in – really see it, smell it, touch it, hear it. Then bring your attention to the drink and slowly start to drink, really concentrating on the senses. Try this for 15-20 minutes. Then choose a monologue you have learned by heart and start to say the lines whilst thinking about the drink. The drink is the main focus of concentration the lines are secondary.

You must ensure that you are truly focused on the drink. Test this by continually asking sense questions internally to yourself, such as ‘How hot or cold is it? What is the cup made of? How does it taste?’, whilst saying the lines at the same time. Tricky I know, but it will have a significant effect on the believability of the lines. The reason for this is that the experience of the drink is real to you – you believe in the drink. This belief starts to transcend into the words of the character.

3. Overall Sensation Exercise

In the same way as the breakfast drink, try an overall sensation sense memory. Ok, this part can be a bit uncomfortable, but take a cold shower….for real. Then later try and recreate in your mind’s eye that event. Use all your senses to relive the cold shower. Once you have done this for 15-20 mins, try saying the lines from a monologue whilst recreating the experience of the cold shower. This will have quite an impact on your senses and will impact the way that you say the lines significantly.

4. Personal Object Exercise

Ok, you are probably getting the hang of this concept by now. This time, identify a personal object from your own life that has significant meaning to you. Take the object and really focus on it. Investigate it from a sense point of view. How does it look, smell, taste, feel and sound? Whilst doing this, start to say the lines from a monologue. Do nothing more other than investigate the object in intricate detail and say the lines. The memory of the object will impact the way that you say the lines of the character.

5. The Animal Exercise

This exercise is relatively famous within the technique. It requires you to humanise an animal’s physicality to recreate a new physicality for a character. If you look at Marlon Brando’s performance in the ‘Godfather’, he plays a bulldog or in ‘A Street Car Named Desire’ you can see that he plays an ape.

Pick a wild animal that you think could have similarities to your character. Go to the zoo and study the animal physically. Study how they move, eat and sleep, in detail. Then at home, physically recreate to the best of your ability, the animal. Once you have done this for awhile, stand up and humanise the animal. How would it walk and move if it were human?

Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey Spector (Gabriel Macht) are not a match made in heaven, but for television law they make a great balance. Dry humor runs under the main theme of each episode so not to take away from very good story telling. The show lacks some true lawyer obstacles that arise when a young apprentice is being molded through the eyes of those responsible for their growth and maturity. How they come together on Suits, the glue that keeps them connected would never happen to any unlucky down on their luck lawyer want-to-be. USA Network, however, can put a spin on the circumstances to build one of the better legal dramas of 2011.

Mike Ross has a photographic memory, yielding him the ability to take the bar exam while having never attending law school. Crossroads in his life put him in a situation of choice of which once made takes control completely out of his hands. His grandmother (Rebecca Shull) does not want to be a burden to her grandson. Her faith in Mike is like most grandmothers and they have a bond that is loyal. Mike has to raise the cash necessary to put his grandmother in full care accommodations or the medical establishment she is now in will be compelled to move her to a state-run facility. Now he must choose between doing something illegal for cash or watching his grandmother be placed in a less than proficient living dwelling.

Mike chooses to follow through on his friend Trevor’s (Tom Lipinski) scheme to make a big score by meeting a man in a hotel room with a briefcase full of marijuana in exchange for money. What he does not know is that Trevor is being held against his will as not to tip Mike off. The man holding Trevor thinks there is a chance the deal is a set up by the police.

Mike accesses his eidetic memory and realizes he is going to walk into a police trap, while on the run through the hotel proceeds dead on into a room full of potential law associates waiting to be interviewed.

Harvey Spector is better able to withstand the pressures of being a high profile lawyer who can manipulate and twist the facts. His boss, Jessica Pearson, is forcing him to interview and hire a protégé for recruitment into the firm. Harvey is less than thrilled because he prefers to work alone and thinks less of everyone else but himself. Since he cannot get out of the process, he, along with his assistant, begin the grind of interviewing all the clones Harvard has to offer.

He is often challenged by his co-worker Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), who thinks Harvey is all polish with no substance. Harvey loves the debating that drives their less than friendly relationship using Litt as a verbal punching bag.

Harvey’s assistant Donna (Sarah Rafferty) begins screening the assembly line of possible new recruits by throwing out off-the-cuff lines like, “What makes you think I’m going to let the whitest man I’ve ever seen interview for our firm?” or “Kid, you look like you’re 11 years old.” Nobody has the response she is looking for until Mike blows in and gets scolded as Donna says, “Excuse me, Mr. Sorken, you are 5 minutes late. Is there a reason I should let you in?” His response: “I’m just trying to ditch the cops, okay? I don’t really care if you let me in or not.”

A stunned Mike is whisked into the interview room as his briefcase flips open and the bags of pot come tumbling out. He wins Harvey over with his skill at memory recall and soon is offered a job he cannot refuse. Secrets bind these two and will be a web that can be woven into every episode.

Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) is smarter than the position she holds at the firm, snd her looks cause her to be defensive. This comes on strong while she is walking Mike through the orientation tour. Mike uses his skill of memory to win Rachel over after he admits aloud how beautiful she is. Her look is a sub version of who she really is and she hears those words so often she now finds it a bit insulting. She works very hard at her job and with her experience, Rachel is able to help shape Mike’s future at the firm.

There are challenges with the characters that will stream continued storyline as each episode will have an independent narrative. The legal jargon is limited, which keeps even the layman connected to the thread of dialogue. The glow of high-rise cityscape is a USA Network necessity that can be found in almost every hour-long drama this cable television channel runs. Most legal shows have used a lot of dark wood which bestows a more opaque look to the sets. Suits has light beaming in from the floor to ceiling windows of the aerial building that houses the firm. The vestibule that leads to the elevators on the first floor is an immense set that is often used for scenes of fundamental segways. The music is subtle and does not become more than the show needs.

It will be cool to actually remember all the names of the people we meet or recite from memory all of the books that we have read. But not all people are blessed with a photographic memory that can capture a lot of data. The most that most people can do is to remember about 50 percent of the details in the books that they have read and recall about 10 names in the 50 people they meet. But hey, this does not mean that we should all give up wanting to make our memory better.

Although we cannot actually make our memory as powerful as one with a photographic memory, we can at least improve its processes so that we can recall more names than we usually do. This is especially true with people who are already aging. As we grow older, our memory slips. This is why most of our grandfathers and mothers often forget a lot of things, even our names.

Below are some names on how to make your memory a little bit better. Read on and you might still be able to do something with that faulty memory of yours.

1. Start earlyIt is important to take care of the brain early on to avoid forgetfulness when old age comes. Brain development starts at a very young age, from 0-3 years old. It is during this time when your brain grows the fastest. Although you may not have any power over your parents actions during this time, you can at least add to their care when you are much older, say 6 or 7 years old, by eating the right foods and avoiding as you grow old vices like cigarettes and alcohol which are proven to lessen memory skills.

2. Commit to the improvementYou should at least be able to commit to the task of bettering your memory. You may not realize it but it is not as simple as memorizing a grocery list and practicing your brain with crossword puzzles and memory games; you will also be changing the way you live your life and the food that you eat. Changing your lifestyle and your diet takes a lot of gumption and self-discipline from you. You will not be able to do it if you do not commit wholeheartedly to the task.

3. Practice Use your brain. Whether it is something as simple as reading a book or playing a strategy game like chess, exercising your brain will help keep those neurons awake and working. In fact, studies have shown that those who answer crossword puzzles, read or generally use their brains will less likely become senile or acquire Alzheimer’s Disease. Using your brain will prevent it from being rusty and dusty.

4. Visualize it One of the most common techniques to improve memory is to visualize words and things. You see, the brain sees data as pictures. It will be easily stored and faster to retrieve if it is seen and visualized as one picture than when it is memorized as numbers or words. For instance, if you are trying to memorize a grocery list, you do not memorize the words. You memorize the pictures of the things that you need to buy. That way, when you go to the grocery store, you will remember to buy that item, bettering your memory in the process.

Defeating the Decay of Memories : Memory Exercises

The decay of memory capacity is such that an hour after trying to memorise,approximately fifty percent of the facts may have been forgotten. A day laternearly everything related to the memory exercise may have evaporated. A graphdrawn to show the way in which people forget would show a sudden, dramaticdownward curve starting about five minutes after the attempted memorisation.This assumes that full attention was given to the spoken or written materials, withunderstanding; obviously if little attention was paid or the material was notunderstood, there would be little to be remembered! The amount of forgettingpasses the fifty percent mark at one hour and falls to 90% after a day. The curvethen levels off at about 90 – 99%.

Suppose instead one could turn this curve around and increase the amount ofremembered facts with the passage of time. Studies have been carried out by DrMatthew Erdelyi of New York University which showed that volunteers tryingout his ideas, found themselves remembering twice as much information the dayafter the learning had taken place than five minutes after. From these studiespractical techniques have been evolved which enable anyone to reverse the usualforgetting curve and remember things better as time goes by.

The method is as follows. Suppose you have to attend a lecture or meeting whereit is not possible to take notes or make a recording, yet it is vital to recall thesalient points which were discussed. To ensure effective recall you must set up aprogramme in your mind which will act as a store for information. Therefore, asthe session proceeds make a mental note of key points which are raised byrepeating these subject headings to yourself in numerical order. Repeat this listfrom the beginning as each new heading is added. In this way you can keep arunning total of all the successive points that have been raised. This is possiblebecause your inner thought-stream is much faster than the vocalised speech thatyou are listening to, so you can fill in the gaps with your review programming. Italso helps to accompany each heading with a visual representation of the subjectmatter, particularly if that image is striking or humorous, i.e. memorable.

Five or ten minutes after the session ends, find a quiet place where you can sitdown and relax, then go through these key topics in your mind. Do not worry ifin this short space of time quite a lot of the material seems to have beenforgotten. Spend a couple of minutes on this exercise and never strain yourself torecall elusive items. Just make an educated guess about anything you cannot recallat that time. Repeat each of the topics to yourself just once and make a writtennote if you can. This helps the initial neurological consolidation of the memoriesfrom short term to permanent long term recordings.

About an hour later, have a second recall session, exactly as before, goingthrough all the topics without undue strain, repeating them to yourself. Newaspects and data will reappear by association. The third session should take placeabout three hours later, the next after six hours, preferably before going to sleep.This makes maximum use of the consolidation occurring during the dreamingprocess. Repeat the recall procedures three or four times on each of the secondand third days, spacing the sessions out evenly through the day.Contact Rafiu Idris

Various types of memory are stored in different parts of the human brain. Quickly, the brain is able to access information that we need to carry out specific activities like when a student takes an exam, facts and information need to be readily available.
