High-school, college, and for some of us after college, we spend a great deal of the time of our lives in studying. Studying can either take the form of serious studying to pass institutional examinations, or it can also take the form of leisurely reading to increase the wealth of knowledge one stores in his psyche. Regardless of the purpose or form of studying that I discuss here, I stand for Effective Studying. Effective studying, according to my dictionary, is to be able to read blocks of educational texts, comprehend the information presented, analyze the information, develop your own hypothesis, and then finalize the learning process by writing it down. Of course, in many cases of academic reading, we don’t need to abide by the ostensibly complex learning process that I’ve mentioned here. In this article, I’ll focus on the very basics – which we often seem to forget! Here is the sequence of steps that I’ve followed all my life successfully:

* Critical reading: this refers to reading any block of text slowly and getting the bigger picture. Here, you ask meaningful questions about the information you’ve just read and then answer them all by yourself. If you can’t answer, just note it down and ask anyone who seems to be much more intelligent to you!

* Critical thinking: this goes hand in hand with critical reading. Instead of just reading through paragraphs and memorizing the group of words, it would be much more generative to actually grab the core meaning of the text.

* Critical listening: previous studies on education have proved that we memorize information easily if we actually hear the words. Our brains first store the information in our short-term memory. After continuous revising and writing, the information is transferred to our long-term memory. The reason why I call it Critical listening is because you only read aloud those sentences from the text given that give you a summary, or you read aloud some sentences that you have formed in your own mind while critically analyzing the information presented in the text.

* Writing and revising: writing is definitely a good habit! I once read in the Reader’s Digest about a highly-successful neurosurgeon whose mother worked as a maid in her community. Not knowing how to help her children grow up, she took her children to the nearest library and asked them to write down summary reports of each book they have read. This was the turning point in the life of the future surgeon, from being a mediocre student in an unknown family destined to die in poverty and humiliation, reading and writing gave him the inspiration to gather knowledge and gain a strong foothold to survive in society. Now, you should definitely remember that your learning process is not finished after writing down any summary. This is because when we write down anything, our brains automatically ignore any new information relating to the written down text. You should periodically revise the written text and try to memorize to make sure that you have actually grasped the idea.

This is the way to consume information and transfer them from your short-term memory to long-term memory. I hope you have a great day studying!

Now that science has found a way to map these frequencies and the positives that are attached to them, all they needed to do was find a way to trigger those frequencies without using overly complicated machines.

They discovered that if the brain was given differing frequency stimulation in each ear, below the frequency range of normal human hearing, they could evoke a response from the cortical of the cortex – which would then in turn, fire the neurons in the exact frequency difference between the two engineered sounds. This technology is called binaural beats and is now widely available online in the form of music CDs. Various types of memory are stored in different parts of the human brain. Quickly, the brain is able to access information that we need to carry out specific activities like when a student takes an exam, facts and information need to be readily available. But our minds do not always allow us to retrieve the memories when we need them. Sometimes it’s trivial, like when we tear the house apart looking for the glasses that have been sitting on our heads the whole time. Sometimes these memory lapses are embarrassing like when you forget your best friend’s birthday. Gratefully memory lapses are not a done deal. You do not have to live with this the rest of your life. Improving your memory is not impossible. There are some easy techniques that you can do to enhance your recollection of information. It does not matter if you are a District Attorney arguing a complex case or someone who is worried about passing the LCATs, there are a few things that everyone can do to improve their memory.

I know you have heard people say, tying a string around your finger to remember something, don’t you? Amusing as it may sound, this actually makes sense. By putting something in your environment slightly askew, you can create a visual reminder for yourself. It is important to take the time to create a strong visualization for why there is a string around your finger. This will better help you to remember what it is you are trying to remember. You don’t always have to use a string. You can try wearing a ring on a different finger and/or wearing your wrist watch on the opposite hand. You can also try using an object in your environment. For example, if you are driving to work and need to remember to pick up your dry cleaning, try placing something on your dashboard blocking your view of the road after you park the car. You won’t forget to pick up your dry cleaning because your view will be blocked with the strange object.

When trying to recall recent information, using visualization and association will help you to accomplish this. This technique requires you to transform words into graphic images so that you recall the words better. For example, let’s say that you need to remember that you have a doctor’s appointment at three in the afternoon and you don’t want to forget it. Try visualizing an image for three, make it funny and amusing. This could be the story of the “Three Little Pigs.” Visualize those three little pigs waiting around in the doctor’s office talking to other patients and reading US Today. Funny images that are associated with whatever it is that you are trying to remember helps the brain to recall them better. Remembering your important doctor’s appointment at three o’clock won’t be so difficult because now you will quickly relate it to that funny image of the three pigs.

Improving your memory does not have to be difficult. Using easy methods like the ones suggested can help tremendously. If you put your tricks into action everyday, it will get to be a habit and you will begin to have an easier time remembering things that you once had a hard time with.

What is Vitamin B for? This is a question that is often asked and understandably so. There are many important vitamins that we need to be taking on a daily basis. B complex

Simply, this vitamin group consists of all eight water-soluble B vitamins.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

It enhances circulation and assists in the formation of blood. It helps the body digest carbohydrates and helps in the production of hydrochloric acid (stomach acid). It is very hard to keep tract on what foods exactly have which B vitamin. I am not saying that it can’t be done but it certainly is more problematic than not. The Dana Guide to Brain Health: A Practical Family Reference From Medical Experts. Book Review. : Brain Foods

Dana Press kindly sent us a couple of books. One of them, The Dana Guide to Brain Health: A Practical Family Reference From Medical Experts, is our topic today.

We are impressed by what Dana is doing to insert neuroscience findings and implications into the public discourse.

No big surprise then, to find out so much quality content inside a 700-page one-of-a-kind guide.

The guide is really 4 books inside a common binding. Priced at a reasonable level, and with superb in-depth text and images in all relevant areas, the book can be used as a 1) Brain 101 tutorial, 2) brief summary of the basics of Brain Care and Wellness, 3) description of the stages of brain development, 4) reference guide for around 70 brain-related conditions.

In my personal opinion, every neuroscience, medical and psychology student, clinician and researcher should have this book in their hands to keep abreast of many recent developments, and also be exposed to professional development courses based on it. Many families and individuals interested in the brain should consider buying it too.

Given the focus of our blog-brain fitness for healthy individuals-, we particularly enjoyed the sections

– on intelligence, with sentences such as “It is extremely unlikely that an “intelligence pill” will be discovered in the near future” (P. 215)

– on “The Brain-Body Loop” which explains, among other things, the effects of stress,

– “Taking Advantage of New Findings and New Finding About the Adult Brain”, with gems such as “Recent research on the brain has established two great principles. First, far from remaining static in adulthood, as we had long assumed, the human brain continues to grow and develop throughout our entire life span. This development takes place in two ways: by ongoing adjustments in signaling pathways and by the addition of new brain cells. —- “Protect the fortress” (our skull), by making sure we use security belts and helmets whenever there may be a risk

—- Exercise regularly

—- Keep Stress in Check (stress can inhibit or reduce the creation of new neurons, among other things)

—- Stimulate our minds through life, by ensuring a flow of novelty and variety that enhances the creation of a “cognitive reserve”. If is fascinating for us to see how Brain Fitness helps integrate “Brain Health” and “Lifelong Learning”, Health & Wellness and Education. Of course, these categories are human conventions that the brain itself probably doesn’t care too much about…

In short, a great reference book for professionals and for people interested in the brain. And a great starting point (the only one we are aware of) for a really useful and practical guide to Brain Health that every family should have.
