This is How Your Brain Suffers Without Vitamins

One of the significant ways in which vitamin deficiency affects the body is by impacting the cognitive function of the brain. Dementia and impaired memory can stem from improper nutrition.

Vitamin deficiency is not common among older adults in the U.S. With access to virtually any food we want, this is natural. Yet, we do naturally decline as we grow older, and that has to do with nutrients. Most often these are a declining cognitive function (e.g. memory), impaired ability to fight infections (i.e. weakened immune system), and hip fractures and falls (due to weak bones).

Here I’d like to show you the latest findings from the very best studies about how vitamin and mineral supplements can impact memory. The following two articles in my series will then look at the immune system and weak bones angles.

Dementia, in older adults, is unfortunately common. It’s estimated that about 4.5 million people in the U.S. have it, with many others suffering a milder form of cognitive impairment. Dementia’s cause is unknown. One popular theory is that high blood levels of homocysteine (a dangerous amino acid) are linked not only with heart disease, but also with dementia. Since high blood levels of homocysteine are easily lowered by folic acid and vitamin B12, there are many high-quality studies out there that have proved it. Here are some:

— 1992: 76 patients in their 70s. None had impaired memory. Vitamin B6, at 20 mg, improved their ability to store information.

— 2000: 1,430 patients over 65.

They suffered dementia. Vitamin B12 improved language function, thus their ability to communicate improved.

— 2003: 149 patients over 65. They had dementia or cognitive impairment. Folic acid (2 mg) and vitamin B12 (one mg) lowered homocysteine levels in the blood by 30%.

— 2005: 209 patients, average age 65. Found the same result as above with lower doses of the vitamins, as well as three mg of vitamin B6.

— 2006: 276 patients over 65. All three vitamins once again lowered homocysteine levels considerably.

Though these studies are great, they didn’t fully prove that the B-vitamins could improve people’s memory. They simply reduce levels of a harmful substance that deteriorates the memory. So it can be said that these supplements preserve memory. We’re about to learn more about this though, as in the next little while we will see the results of up to seven years of supplements on tens of thousands of people. Stay tuned.

Brain Foods : Brain Food: How The Food We Buy May Be Impacting The Long Term Health Of Our Brains

When we do our grocery shopping we may not be thinking in terms of brain food, but what we buy does play a part in the health of our minds. We sometimes buy things in terms of the health of our hearts, but we may need to make a few changes if we want our minds to go the distance as we age.

Americans still seem to persist in buying high fat foods even though we are aware of the risks to our arteries and heart. However, just as in the case of heart healthy foods, food for the brain requires a reduction in the “bad fat” content of our diets. Clogged arteries not only impact the heart they hind the mind.

The brain is the largest user of oxygen of all the different organs so any change in blood flow to the brain quickly effects its ability to function. Reducing fats is important in keeping those arteries free. In fact, researchers have noted that reduced blood flow is a contributing factor in cognitive decline in older people. Protecting your blood supply to the brain is critical in keeping function longer as you age.

Brain food also needs to be high in vitamins and minerals. While this is good for the body in general, the brain in particular is susceptible to deficiencies in nutrients. Many of the chemicals in the brain, neurotransmitters, etc. depend on a steady supply of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Since these nutrients come largely through fruits and vegetables most people do not get all that they need. The typical american eats nowhere near the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables that they need. The flip side of this problem is that even if they did, our modern processing of foods as well as some of the way we farm them tends to strip away rather than help retain these nutrients.

Antioxidants are another item that is important for the brain. Again, finding food for the brain that provides the right levels of antioxidants is hard. It comes back to the lack of fruits and vegetables in our diet as well as the previously mentioned depletion of these nutrients in the foods themselves.

Antioxidants are foundational in helping to protect the mind from aging. Scientists are learning that the damage caused by free radicals is a big factor in some of the age related decline we see in older people. It also may play a role in the damage to brain cells that leads to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals before they can damage cells. Good food for the brain must include a healthy dose of antioxidants.

So what do we do to get good brain food since we know that most people don’t buy what they should and when they do it is still short on nutrients? What steps can we take to ensure the health of our brains as we age?

First, we still need to do our part to cut fats and increase the fruits and vegetables we eat. Regardless of whether or not they have decreased nutrient content, eating more of them is still better for us then not having them at all.

Second, finding good fruits and vegetables for brain food may require thinking outside the box a bit. Instead of buying from chain stores who get their produce from commercial farms that use the kind of heavy processing which strips nutrients, buy from smaller local farms or farmers markets. They may be a bit more expensive at times, but the quality could be substantially better.

Third, it may be necessary to add supplements to the diet that help fill in the gaps. There are many good combination supplements out there that provide a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This is a fairly easy and effective way to make up for some of the lack of nutrients we have in our food. Make sure you find a manufacturer that has a reputation for quality and uses safe, pure ingredients.

While we may not always do our best to eat appropriate brain food, we can take steps to improve the level of nutrients we get daily. Since medicine is helping people live longer, it is more important than ever that we do what we can to help our minds keep up. Nobody wants to live to be 90 only to have their minds degrade to a miserable level. We can do something about that by giving our brain what it needs. All it takes is a few changes to what we buy and eat as well as a little commitment to stick with those changes. The end result will be worth it.

Improve Your Brain Power The Easy And Fun Way : Brain Power

Article by Sharon Bell

Stress, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and other harmful habits can all contribute to the deterioration of the brain even at an early age of 30. Nowadays, people with graying hair are not the only ones struggling to remember names, places, dates and other important things, some members of younger generations are becoming forgetful as well.

Much like the muscles in your body, your brain will regain strength and vitality if you use it and sharpen it with a daily mental workout. However, not all people are keen on reading books, solving crossword puzzles and getting into Japanese numbers game like Sudoku. If you are one of the many individuals who easily get bored with brain workouts, you do not have to worry about losing the edge of your mind. Actually, there are many fun and interesting ways to boost your brain power and here are some of them:

Sample Brainwave Entertainment

Brainwave entertainment, which uses the latest technology in binaural beat research, is designed to put the mind into a relaxed and meditative state. This kind of entertainment provides a condition where your mind becomes open for analytical thinking. Through CDs and audiotapes, brainwave technology will make use of tools that will help condition your brainwaves. Surf the Net to learn more about this technology.

Max The Slumber Time

People who are sleep deprived are often cranky and slow thinking. If you want to have a sharp mind, you really need to improve your sleeping habits, ensure that you get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each day. When you sleep, your brain shorts out your short-term memory and organizes everything that you learned for the day so that you can easily access these data when you need them. If you perpetually lack sleep, your brain will not have enough time to store your memory in the right places. As a result, you cannot remember dates, names, faces, and even where you placed your keys.

Get An Imaginary Friend

Many people think that talking to an imaginary friend is just child’s play or a sign of mental lapses. Actually, having imaginary friends and interacting with them can help you access the data stored in your subconscious mind. Just make sure that your imaginary friend is someone who is erudite or good; it would be scary and quite dangerous if you opt to have Freddy Kruger as your imaginary guest and confidante.

Sing Out Loud

If you are alone in your bathroom or in your car, you can always try making up lyrics to the song played on the radio. If you are trying to remember a name, an address or a number, you can always sing it to a tune that you like. This will greatly help in exercising the right side of your brain and help you enhance your problem-solving skills.

Never Stop Being Curious

Maintain an inquisitive mind and do not accept the status quo. A fun and mentally stimulating exercise can be made by questioning almost anything that you see. Just like when you were a kid, ask questions and seek the answers. Why is the sky blue? How does the car engine work? What is the meaning of life? These are countless scientific and philosophical questions that can help tickle your mind a bit.

Laughter Is Indeed A Potent Medicine

Whenever you laugh, you release endorphins, which are effective in bringing down stress levels. People who enjoy life and are not slaves to stress usually have more healthy brains. Furthermore, laughter also helps in making an individual more open to new knowledge and ideas.

Pop Your Way To A Healthy Brain

Don’t be afraid to pop a pill to help you maximize your brain potentials. There are many brain enhancing vitamins and supplements in the market that contain herbs and natural ingredients that promote healthier brain. But you need to carefully check if all the ingredients of the product you are planning to use are safe. One popular brain booster is Neurovar. Know more about this product by visiting http://www.Neurovar.com.

First human face only acute stressors and debilitating genetic gave our time to give us two basic options: fight or flight! In any case, the system requires a mode of action, the fight against the more exaggerated the problem acute or run from it.

People these days are facing different stresses. The same chronic or repeated stressors often the case, said an annoying boss requires a response which is certainly not physically fight or flee. His whole body responds in its own way by releasing several primitive biological molecules, the neurotransmitters in the brain that induce the body to take action. But what action is appropriate dummy?

Modern problems require more options, and do not overdo them. This means that smoking and not to “stress” as (s) play stressor at the end.

When the body is prepared activities are extremely acute, it will disable some of your own body systems, such as learning and memory, and gave the presidency to tell others of breathing and pumping oxygen-rich blood to the muscles quickly. Went to the stressor, the body reacts with the balance (homeostasis that is) its systems.

But imagine if the stress continues to repeat, and his body never returns to homeostasis? At this stage, the disease shows its head, is able to turn deadly! People have a wrong understanding, but what? United States, 75% of trips to health are stress-related problems.

Exactly what happens in your body and what you can do to improve your complaint?

The global brain dynamics are to maintain homeostasis in your body if the release of certain neurotransmitters (in particular circumstances, at the molecular level, communicators) is more than feeling the limbic system of the brain. Phylogenetically speaking, the emotional center of the fight or flight is very ancient, pre-modern man. Neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, GABA, and the precursor of adrenaline) cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) for the full functioning of the body. The brain contains the BBB to help keep the body from harmful molecules in it, and distribute the action of control molecules (neurotransmitters).

The next phase of the neurological system (of which the mind can control the center) was divided by the sympathetic nervous system to quickly move the fight or flight, and the parasympathetic nervous system, an extraordinary opportunity for the homeostasis of the body. Scalping strategies are to coordinate the body’s reaction to the threat and immediately after.

Two possible problems can occur in response to the threat (s):

1. Exaggerated the extent of the acute response.

 2. Extended Solution to chronic repeated threats real or imagined. What serious clinically identifiable symptom as their brain is not advanced enough to automatically handle the threats phylogenetically modern age. Precisely what is called the stress cycle and movements that will communicate with the disease and even death?

What can be done to mitigate, if not solve these things, because the phylogeny of the human race?

When the age of plasticity or changeability within the brain is reduced then a simple treatment of acute, as the amount of pharmaceutical professionals (infection of the approach) are generally insufficient or less. Approach to wellness (preventative maintenance is the best, because of natural supplements for health after a certain time, the advice of your physician you strengthen in acute trauma and strengthens vitality to face chronic threats.

In 1985, Lou Paradise President and Chief of Research of Topical BioMedics, Inc., the developer of Topricin Pain Relief and Healing Cream found himself in pain… Riddled with severe bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). The condition was caused by injuries he sustained as a decorated Marine Corps combat/rescue/helicopter medivac crew chief and the physical demands of conducting hundreds of rescue missions of military personnel and Vietnamese citizens. For more than twenty years, Mr. Paradise has been on a mission to help as many veterans as possible to live life without the discomfort of pain or the harmful side effects of OTC chemical pain pills and addictive opiates.

A tragic reality: Studies indicate that, along with suffering PTSD, veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are twice as likely to be prescribed opioid and other narcotic pain medications for dealing with their physical pain. These veterans are likely to abuse the drugs and become addicted, as well as abuse alcohol. This troubled behavior places veterans at risk of acting violentlyharming themselves or othersas well as increasing suicidal thoughts and actions.

Moreover, studies indicate that veterans who suffer from PTSD and who have a past diagnosis of drug and/or alcohol abuse are four times more likely to be prescribed opioid/other narcotic pain killers than veterans with no history of addiction. Another sad fact: self-inflicted injuries and suicide is more likely to occur in individuals who take Rx drugs.

Increased Brain Power Is Easy If You Know How : Brain Power

Article by Janet Martin

Stress, fatigue, emotional problems and even old age can make your memory rusty. When it does, you tend to forget where you placed your keys, miss appointments with the dentist or even forget the names of friends. These lapses in your memory are actually normal and understandable but can be completely preventable. You can actually do a lot of things and eat a lot stuff that can help make you remember things more clearly. If you are clueless on what to do to sharpen your ability to recall and recollect, read on and follow the tips below:

Keep Away From Brain Drainers

If you want to have strong cognitive abilities even when you are in your 80s, then you need to start avoiding the things that kill your brain cells. How are you going to keep a sharp memory when you are depleting the cells that are essential in making you remember things?

The number one brain drainer is chronic stress. Being in a perpetual state of stress can truly zap away your brain cells and make your mind function less efficiently. Simple organizational skills, a little help from other people, and a bit or rest and relaxation can help you fight stress.

Too much alcohol is also responsible for making your mind dense. Even if you eat right and exercise regularly, if you regularly consume huge amounts of alcohol, your efforts in boosting your brain power will go down the drain. Alcohol is definitely a brain drainer.

Other brain drainers you need to avoid are smoking, taking drugs, and sleep deprivation. Talk to people who have insomnia or haven’t slept well for a while and you will realize that their thoughts can be scattered and incoherent.

Let Blood Flow

To have a clear mind, you need to make sure that your blood circulation is optimal. If there are problems with your blood flow, oxygen and other nutrients that your mind needs will not be able to reach the brain. Buildup of fats and cholesterol in your arteries do not only pose cardiovascular problems, but also brain fogging.

In order to keep your blood flowing flawlessly, you need to minimize, if not totally eliminate, food that are rich in fat and bad cholesterol. Lay low when it comes to mayonnaise, margarine, butter, fat meats, and rich desserts.

Exercise Your Mind And Body

Physical fitness is important in helping improve blood circulation and preventing clogged arteries. Thus, you need to exercise regularly, walk at least 10,000 steps a day, and do some weight training to build your bones.

Aside from physical exercise, you also need to do some mental exercises. Like muscles in your body, the brain will atrophy when not in use. Thus, you should read a lot, do some crossword puzzles or play some mind-bending games. Doing mathematical problems in your head can also sharpen your mind and improve your memory. Remember, the more you use your brain, the better it becomes.

Go For The Bs

Eating a healthy diet is crucial in keeping your mind and body in tiptop shape. However, no matter how much you eat vegetables and fruits, your body’s ability to absorb nutrients gets less efficient as you grow older.

In order to keep your mind buzzing, you need to increase your intake of B vitamins. Experts believe that deficiency in vitamins B6 and B12, niacin, and thiamin can contribute to future cognitive problems. You can get these B vitamins in enriched grains, meat, potatoes, bananas and shellfish. You can also take some supplements that have all the B vitamins that you need.

Cleanse Your Gut

Years of consuming fatty foods, junk and sugar-rich desserts can contribute to fogginess of your mind. If you have been eating fast foods and low-fiber diet for the last couple of years, then there is a big chance that your gut is not in a very good shape. Remember, the absorption of vitamins and minerals needed by your brain happens in your intestines. Thus, if your colon is in such a bad shape, your body will not be able to efficiently absorb the nutrients from the food that you eat and the supplements that you take.

One safe and easy way to cleanse your colon is through detoxification. There are products in the market that can help you achieve a no-fuss detoxification, so you don’t have to lose mind over it. One detox system that not only cleanses your gut but also helps in repairing tissues is Colpurin. Read more about other people’s experiences with Colpurin by visiting http://www.colpurin.com/.

Brain Foods : Brain Foods – Aka Raw Food

It has been said that we only use less than 10% of our brains. Whether this is true or not, there is no doubt that many people would like to be able to use their brain better, to get the most out of their life. In this article, I will list some foods that have been shown to help our brains function at their best, and the main vitamin or mineral that qualifies them as brain foods.

First though, a disclaimer on the following information. The human body is complex, so just taking a few vitamins and minerals will probably not turn you into the guy in the movie Limitless (for the unaware, he had super brain power). The brain is dependent on other systems to be functioning properly to even get the proper nutrition. For example, if your digestive system is messed up, and you are not absorbing your food, then all the vitamins or brain foods you can swallow probably won’t help much.

Also, if you indulge in certain foods or drinks that are “anti-brain foods,” or in other words, inhibit your absorption of the required nutrients, then, you and your brain are out of luck.

With all of that said, the space of this article does not allow me to come close to all of the info on each of these nutrients, such as the bodily functions facilitated by each of the nutrients, deficiency symptoms, dosages, and other sources, but you may find that out by visiting the website below. What I will be covering is the plant sources of these vitamins and minerals that are good for the brain, and some examples of therapeutic applications.

Also, this list is in alphabetical order, not in order of importance.

B1 vitamin, or Thiamine is attained from these brain foods: almonds, asparagus, avocado, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, dried apricots, dry beans and peas, legumes, nuts, peanuts, seeds, soybeans, wheat germ, whole grains, and wild rice. It is used in therapeutic applications for heart failure, mental illness, indigestion, to name a few things.

B3 vitamin, or Niacin is important for several vital organs besides the brains, and is found in these brain foods: Beans, brewer’s yeast, dates, dried figs, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, peas, peanuts, prunes, whole grain breads and cereals. It is used therapeutically in mental illness, poor circulation, migraine headaches, and schizophrenia, as well as a few other ailments.

Choline is used in the metabolism of fats, which makes it an important component in these brain foods: Bran, brewer’s yeast, green leafy vegetables, lecithin, legumes, nuts, seeds, soybeans, wheat germ. It is used in treatment of atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries, headaches, and more. Being able to absorb fats properly is important in absorbing any brain foods.

Chromium is known to be helpful in preventing and treating diabetes, and is also a key component of these brain foods: Apples, brewer’s yeast, black pepper, fresh fruits, grapes, green leafy vegetables, honey, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, potatoes, raisins, root vegetables, whole wheat and rye cereals. It has been used in therapeutic applications for mental illness, among other things.

Inositol is a lesser known B complex vitamin, and is found in these brain foods: Brewer’s yeast, citrus fruits, lecithin, nuts, seeds, spinach, sprouts, vegetables, wheat germ, and whole grains. It is used in therapeutic applications for atherosclerosis, heart disease, and schizophrenia.

Manganese, another important component of the following brain foods is used in treating mental disease as well as nervous instability, and neuromuscular diseases. It is found in: Almonds, bananas, beans, blueberries, bran, broccoli, buckwheat, carrots, celery, cereals, green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, raisins, rhubarb, seeds, wheat germ, whole grains. A cup of pineapple contains 2 mg. of manganese.

Phosphorous is the last nutrient on my list, and it is found in: Brewer’s yeast, grains, legumes, nuts, pumpkin seeds, sea vegetables, (dulse/kelp), tofu, whole grain cereals, and wheat bran.

A quick note that I would like to point out is that in the above lists of brain foods, are ingredients for these raw food dishes: delicious carob fudge, the drink “orange whip,” strawberry pie, “b plus” cheese, cheesecake, and oatmeal date cookies, as well as hundreds of other recipes, from the raw food recipe book available on my website below.

To conclude, it boils down to taking care of your health on a larger scale than just eating some vitamins. Raw food brain foods improve digestion, and are cleansing to the blood, which directly affects the brain. As you incorporate raw food brain foods into your diet, you will be affecting your whole body for the better!

Five Easy Ways To Increase Your Brain Power : Brain Power

Article by Erin Matlock

Neurogenesis is a word being tossed around a lot lately. It means that your brain is growing new neurons – and not just while you’re young. Scientists used to believe that you were born with a certain set of neurons, and mental decline was an inevitable part of aging.

Thankfully, they now know this isn’t true. Your brain continues to produce new neurons throughout your entire life. So, why do you have trouble remembering and why don’t you feel as “sharp” as you used to? These new neurons must be put to work in order for them to survive and strengthen. You literally have to use them or you’re going to lose them.

You probably know that challenging your brain can combat age-related decline. That’s why crossword puzzles and Sudoku are so popular. You diligently work the daily puzzle in hopes that it will keep your brain in shape. Research shows it’s a great start, but you need more. Your brain needs variety and novelty.

Think of it like this – you go to the gym every day in hopes of getting and keeping a fit, strong body. You pick up the dumbbell and do three sets of right bicep curls. You put the dumbbell away, towel off, and go home. Sure, you’re getting exercise – your right arm looks amazing. Now, look at the rest of your body. Not so great. Same thing happens when you exercise just one part of your brain.

The key to a great brain exercise is to throw yourself a curve ball. Do something completely out of the ordinary, something that breaks your routine, and you’ll strengthen the connections in your brain.

Try these five easy ways to exercise and increase your brain power.

1) Are you right handed? Try using your left hand to operate the computer mouse.

2) Recite the alphabet backwards. Try this, and you’ll feel your brain stretching as you move your way from Z to A.

3) Take a different route to work, school, or the grocery store. Your brain is on autopilot most of the time, so wake it up by learning a new way.

4) Enjoy your favorite T.V. show with your eyes closed. Try it for just ten minutes if you can’t get all the way through. Visualizing the characters and recreating the scenes in your mind forces your brain to focus on the show and what’s really happening.

5) Get in the shower and start singing. A study published in “The Psychology of Music” showed that singing familiar tunes helps to improve spatial intelligence – the reasoning your brain uses to judge distance.

It would not be impossible to discuss, or even list them all in one short article; so, I have chosen six good possibilities that you may want to investigate further.

Gingko biloba has long been revered as a medicinal wonder and is one of the most commonly used supplements for brain health.

Studies have shown that gingko biloba increases blood flow to the brain, providing oxygen, which is critical to efficient brain function. An adequate oxygen supply must be continuous because it is the fuel that allows the brain to send signals to all parts of the body and keep it functioning normally

Since gingko biloba is widely cultivated, it is inexpensive when compared to other supplements and won’t leave a big dent in your monthly budget. Most gingko biloba supplements require a dose of only 1 to 2 tablets or capsules a day.

Omega-3 fatty acids improve memory, learning ability, and may also prevent depression, mood disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia. A large percentage of the gray matter in the brain is made up Omega-3 fatty acids. These help make brain cells more fluid and in turn, improve communication between brain cells. DHA also seems to slow down the buildup of a protein that forms neurofibrillary tangle in the brain, a contributing factor in Alzheimer’s disease.

The best food source for Omega-3 is oily fish, particularly wild salmon, but if fish is not your thing, there are other options. Fresh, raw refrigerated walnuts and chia seeds are excellent alternatives and both can be easily incorporated into your diet in a multitude of ways. In addition to Omega 3 fatty acids, they are full of Omega-6 fatty acids, which work as a natural antidepressant.

As you can see, Omega-3 is available in a number of foods, but if you choose to take it in capsule form, the recommended dose via food and/or supplements is 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams daily

Below are four additional supplements that you may want to consider.  These four are often found in combination supplement capsules or tablets.

1. Nattokinase (from soybeans) helps with blood flow in the body – including the brain, which is critical for lifelong mental acuity.

2. Alpha Lipoic acid (aLa) is one of the best antioxidants for the brain.

3. Phosphatidyl Serine (PS) helps with memory recall, especially numbers, names and faces, etc.

4. Acetyl-L-Carnitine helps brain produce a vital neurotransmitter and is often used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Herbal supplements are not always safe just because they have been derived primarily from plants. Many herbal plants are quite potent. There can be side effects, sensitivities and possible negative interactions with medications that you are taking.

Ontario, CA (PRWEB) November 07, 2013

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council called for a national system to track sports-related concussions last Wednesday. The sense of urgency came after an IOM report found that no one knows how often the youngest athletes suffer concussions or which sports have the highest rates. It also wasnt clear if better headgear would help. (IOM, Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture, October 30, 2013)

In the past decade more awareness has been given to seriousness of concussions and professional sports associations, such as the NFL, are finally paying attention to the problem. Despite this, the IOM panel found that young athletes still face a culture of resistance to reporting the injury and staying on the sidelines until its healed.

In a press release on October 20, 2013, IOM committee chairman Dr. Robert Graham said, Concussion is an injury that needs to be taken seriously. If an athlete has a torn ACL on the field, you dont expect him to tape it up and play. See More.

According to an article by the Associated Press, reports of sports concussions are on the rise, amid headlines about former professional players who suffered long-term impairment after repeated blows. Wednesdays report said 250,000 people 19 years old and younger were treated in emergency rooms for concussions and other sports- or recreation-related brain injuries in 2009, up from 150,000 in 2001. Its not clear how many concussions and other related brain injuries go undiagnosed. (AP, More study urged on concussions in young athletes, October 31. 2013)

Its a shame that so many of our young people are facing brain injuries at such an early age. Whats worse is that the sports culture tells them they should play through it. They dont realize that playing through can affect their mental stamina for the rest of their life. A concussion can easily cause long-term problems for a child, says Frank N. Darras, Americas top disability lawyer who is a regular expert guest in national broadcast media. Watch here.

The data is clear for high school, collegiate, and professional sports. Concussion rates for male athletes in high school and college are highest for football, ice hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling. For women, its soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. Womens ice hockey also has one of the highest reported concussion rates at the college level.

According to the IOM panel, theres no similar data on concussion rates for younger children who play sports, whether on school teams or in community leagues.

Every state except Mississippi has passed a concussion law following a 13-year-old in Washington who suffered permanent disability after returning to a football game despite a concussion. Yet, its not always easy to spot a concussion and most young athletes play without regular access to a professional trained to spot them. *

Starting in high school, trainers are there at every game. Students and professionals trained in sports medicine are watching for signs of concussions and other injuries. Earlier than that, theres not that protection and the father who volunteered to be your sons PeeWee coach isnt trained yet to recognize the sometimes subtle signs of a concussion. This leaves the youngest among us the most vulnerable. More research is needed to identify trends so we can start taking steps to really protect our kids from concussion disabilities, says Darras.
