Having a good memory is important in any walk of life but it is crucial when you are running your own business. Without your memory there would be chaos. Most of us don’t trust our memory but how can you improve your memory in order to become more successful in business?

There are memory techniques that can be used to make the process easier. After all when you are running your own business there are so many different names of people to remember (and let’s be honest nobody instantly looks like their name.)

In order to improve your memory you will need to first of all learn to relax. Statistics show that amazingly more people fear public speaking than dying. Therefore it is imperative to learn how to relax and to find an easy method of storing information into your long term memory rather than just into your short term memory.

One of the easiest way to do this is by using association using your imagination. For example if you are due to meet with a Tony then try to visualise a famous person that you would associate with that name e.g. Tony Blair. Or if you are trying to remember a list of a different countries that manufactures items that you need to purchase then try again to use association to store that information into your long term memory. For example if the countries are China, France and Germany then why not imagine a china tea cup for China, the Eiffel tower for France and a famous tennis player like Boris Becker for Germany . It is a proven fact that it is far easier to remember a list of words by using images associated to those words that you are trying to remember.

If you are trying to learn a long list of numbers, which is quite likely when you are running your own business, again try breaking down the list of numbers and using your imagination to visualise those numbers as images instead.

For example if you are trying to remember the number 1915927525 then try breaking it down as follows:

1915…Try to visualise a clock showing that time

9…Think of a balloon on a string that resembles the number 9

2…Imagine a swan that resembles the number 2

7525…Think of something outrageous like a man of 75 marrying a woman of 25

Suddenly that important list of 10 numbers has been broken down into 4 images which will now make it easier to store that number into your long term memory.

The power of using association is that is allows us to store boring information in a more interesting way.

I have found these simple methods have helped me enormously within my business.
The simple memory techniques that I have learned have helped to improve my memory no end. Previously I had struggled to remember names, especially when I was meeting with so many new contacts, but I now just use the power of association in order to instantly remember their names and store them into my long term memory. I also use these methods when I make videos to promote my business as I find that I am far more relaxed and able to remember my script by using this simple method.

Indeed my ten year old daughter can even recite the first 10 numbers of the mathematical Pi number by using this simple technique and my eight year old daughter instantly remembers that there are 22 bones in an adult human skull merely by thinking of 2 swans that resemble the number two rather than trying to remember a number.

It is reassuring to know that in our ever busy lives there are quick and easy ways that we can improve our memories, which will help us to run our businesses more efficiently and in the process will enable us to relax and gain more confidence when meeting or speaking with others .All we need to do is to program our memory and to use it properly.

Do you feel, you are born with a poor memory, or somewhere along the line it has become unreliable? Chances are, you are mistaken – You might still have a fantastic memory. In most cases it is us acquiring bad memory habits because we don’t know how our memory works best, rather than having some sort of deficiency. Here are six powerful tips to improve memory.

1.Concentrate on what you want to remember, and avoid doing multiple things at the same time whenever possible.
Our brain needs time to convert external information into a memory – and you have to give him / her that time. So next time you want to remember the name of a person you are introduced to, give that name your full attention. Even repeat it by saying, nice to meet you Heather.

2.Stop multitasking: Research has shown that multitasking does not work well when it comes to memorizing information. So if you are talking on the phone while you are going to another room to fetch something, don’t be surprised if you have forgotten what it was. This is normally not a sign of your memory failing. The average person can only hold a very limited amount of information in their short-term memory, and this capacity is being used up by paying attention to the phone call.

3.Excessive and ongoing stress impairs memory. Constant worries and large amounts of cortisol (which are released when we are stressed) have been shown to impact our ability to recall information, and to memorize new information. So if you are feeling stressed out, it is time for a break, not more of the same.

4.To create a strong memory for new information, you have to connect it to something you already have in your long-term memory. This is the main reason why the more you know about a certain topic, the easier it gets to learn new information. How can you deliberately create strong associations? Visualize information you want to remember. Research strongly indicates that we remember images better than words.

5.Think about the meaning of information you want to remember. You can quite easily achieve this by asking questions. For example, whenever you hear a new name, number, or strange term, ask yourself: What does this mean to me?

6.Practice recalling new information. The first step to a good long-term memory for
anything you want to remember, is creating an association with existing memories. To further strengthen this association practice recalling the information. For example if you have been to an important meeting where you met lots of interesting people, ask yourself after the meeting: Who was there? What were we talking about?

Practice these 6 tips in your daily life and I am confident you are going to surprise yourself as to how good your memory actually is (and always has been).

Do you know your date of birth? The name of the President or Prime Minister? These are questions that are regularly used to test for memory loss – the first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although memory loss occurs in all cases of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be difficult to detect in the early stages as many patients manage to cover it up well during tests as a matter of pride.

It’s the recent things we’ve done such as in the last hours, days or even weeks that are the first memories to be lost in Alzheimer’s patients.

However, while those things that are placed in our short term memory are the first to go it’s only much later as the Alzheimer’s condition has become much more severe does the past or longer term memory become affected.

This makes the degree or memory loss a very useful tool in assessing the presence and scope of the disease as if the patient is co-operative and asked in a pleasant way the results can be very revealing.

The following ten questions form part of a common test as they cover both the short and the long term memory and also test for orientation as well.

How old are you?

What is your date of birth?

What day is it today?

What month are we in?

What year is it?

When was the first world war?

What is the name of the President / Prime Minister?

Where are you now?

Can you please count backwards from 20 to 1?

Tell them an address, then ask them to repeat it back to you after five minutes.

Although the test is deceptively easy it is also very useful as it’s quick, cheap, non-evasive and helps diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and gives an indication of the areas in the patient’s memory that may be affected.

Care must always be taken as a low score on its own doesn’t prove dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, as not all people will know all the answers to the questions!

Instead it’s a guide or an indication that something may be wrong and requires further investigation.

To get into the scientifics of the issue; one of the key ways that people lose their short term memory is through old age. Another one of the leading ways that this can happen is through stress. Many of us are very familiar with stress and this can happen due to emotional conditions or when things happen at work. Androgens, adrenalin and levels of energy will then drop and the body will enter into a mentally catabolic state where it will not respond or act in quite the same way.

Simply put, if you can count and know your abc’s you can use these tips to improve your memory. We all have the ability to retain separate images in our minds quite easily, and by using this kind of system of combining different elements, the images remain quite distinct from one another. Since they are sequence based with a system we are already familiar with, that of counting, we know we won’t miss anything important.

Check out this FACT: When Albert Einstein died they opened up his head to look at his brain. It was actually smaller than average size! However, he used much more than most people. By practicing these memory “stunts” you will enable yourself to retain larger amounts of information. Being a genius is not so much as being smart or clever, but about seeing how one part of life fits with another part of life. The more you know, the more you can link them together. So let’s start thinking like a genius!

An example of this practice is remembering numbers. Let’s try an easy one 81476. Try to picture each number as a shape or object. (8) how about a snowman. (1) how about a paint brush. (4) how about a sail of a yacht. (7) how about a cliff. (6) maybe a trunk of an elephant. Now create a quick story linking them together. The snowman was using a paintbrush to paint his yacht on a cliff while feeding his pet elephant. While numbers tend to get jumbled in our head this method gives a visual that can be remembered a lot more easily. While this might seem complicated, having a standard shape or object for each number (at all times) will make it simple with practice.

Unfortunately, you can not decide where something goes into your memory – into short term or into long term! In fact, it will ALWAYS go into short term memory first and requires further effort to get it into the long term memory area. It’s like having a filing tray and a filing cabinet. You can only store so much in the filing tray until you need to get it into the cabinet.

It might not be too surprising to note that there is a significant link with good nutrition and a powerful memory. After all. The building blocks of the brain are organic, the electrical signals are produced from the body. The results are that the better you eat the better you are able to perform. Various types of memory are stored in different parts of the human brain. Quickly, the brain is able to access information that we need to carry out specific activities like when a student takes an exam, facts and information need to be readily available. But our minds do not always allow us to retrieve the memories when we need them. Sometimes it’s trivial, like when we tear the house apart looking for the glasses that have been sitting on our heads the whole time. Sometimes these memory lapses are embarrassing like when you forget your best friend’s birthday. Gratefully memory lapses are not a done deal. You do not have to live with this the rest of your life. Improving your memory is not impossible. There are some easy techniques that you can do to enhance your recollection of information. It does not matter if you are a District Attorney arguing a complex case or someone who is worried about passing the LCATs, there are a few things that everyone can do to improve their memory.

I know you have heard people say, tying a string around your finger to remember something, don’t you? Amusing as it may sound, this actually makes sense. By putting something in your environment slightly askew, you can create a visual reminder for yourself. It is important to take the time to create a strong visualization for why there is a string around your finger. This will better help you to remember what it is you are trying to remember. You don’t always have to use a string. You can try wearing a ring on a different finger and/or wearing your wrist watch on the opposite hand. You can also try using an object in your environment. For example, if you are driving to work and need to remember to pick up your dry cleaning, try placing something on your dashboard blocking your view of the road after you park the car. You won’t forget to pick up your dry cleaning because your view will be blocked with the strange object.

When trying to recall recent information, using visualization and association will help you to accomplish this. This technique requires you to transform words into graphic images so that you recall the words better. For example, let’s say that you need to remember that you have a doctor’s appointment at three in the afternoon and you don’t want to forget it. Try visualizing an image for three, make it funny and amusing. Improving your memory may seem like an incredibly daunting prospect; especially because many people believe that memory loss is a natural process of getting older. In part, it is a natural process but not for the reasons most people think. There are many methods that you can use in order to improve your memory but it will take some daily dedication on your part.

People tend to think their memory decreases with age because they find themselves forgetting things as time goes on and may not even remember what they ate for breakfast. The fact is that people spend most of their young lives in formal education that involves constant mental stress and preparation. Most people continue this education until high school or college, and then stop in order to join the work force. They will be stressed until they reach a point where they are comfortable in their career or job, and then are not stretching their minds as much. The attention level becomes very relaxed and the proper amount of focus is not paid to normal everyday events, which helps to reduce memory loss.

On average it takes approximately eight seconds for a short term memory to get transferred into long term memory, and that requires eight seconds of focus and concentration. Most people do not spend that long on normal everyday events because life today is so busy and fast. They are constantly thinking about the next event or task, and do not spend the time required that it takes to process a memory.

There are many methods that you can use to improve your memory, including repetition to ingrain an event into your brain. If you meet a new person it may help you to remember their name if you repeat it a couple of times immediately upon hearing it, and also possibly trying to connect it to an event or memory from your past. If they look like someone you know, or their name is similar to another person, then you can use it to better remember it.

When trying to remember something as simple as a grocery list, repeat the items on the list several times in the car when driving to the store and you should find much better retention when you get there. There is something about repeating the words aloud that helps the memory become impressed into your long term memory. If that memory never gets into the long term section of your brain, then it can be difficult to remember simple events or tasks such as what you had for breakfast.

Relating a story or tale that is already in your long term memory to a new experience or event can also help cement it into your mind so that you will remember it. There are also many great online courses or eBooks that you can look at or study in order to really help you improve your memory. Improving your memory will take constant and daily changes in your life that may seem uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to them fairly quickly. It takes about 21 days before something to become a habit, but you’ll find that it is well worth the effort.
