Your Brain Signals to Your Body It Needs Food : Brain Foods

Article by Marquis Van De Mark

It’s the cells in the brain from the hypothalamus gland that regulates when you should eat and not your stomach scientists have discovered. Food will trigger your brain to remember the way food tastes, smells and will excite chemicals in the brain to eat.

When the body needs food or nourishment, neurotransmitters are released. One neurotransmitter called Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is important in sending messages to various parts of the brain.

Ghrelin and glucose: According to the theory, low levels of glycogen and low blood sugar levels stimulate a spike in ghrelin and NPY’s activity in the hypothalamus. As NPY is stimulated, your desire for sweet and starchy foods goes up. And when ghrelin rises, so does appetite.

While you sleep, your glycogen and blood sugar stores are used up, causing the brain to release NPY. Skipping breakfast increases NPY levels so that by afternoon, you’re set up for a carbohydrate binge. This craving for carbs is not the result of a lack of willpower; it’s an innate biological urge at work.

The leptin link: After eating, leptin levels increase and inhibit the firing of NPY, so you feel full. If it has been a while since you’ve eaten, your blood levels of glucose are low and therefore leptin is low, and ghrelin is high.

The circulating levels of ghrelin peak at different times depending on when you have your heaviest meal. People who eat big lunches show ghrelin peaks at a different time than people whose main meal is at night.

The galanin-fat connection: Galanin is released when fat stores need filling up. In the evening, galanin levels tend to rise, which may be nature’s way of making sure that people have enough calories to last them through the night.

CCK: When you eat, food enters and fills your stomach and then travels to the intestinal tract. As the food is digested and the body’s cells are fed, a chemical called cholecystokinin (CCK) is released, turning on feelings of fullness and turning off the appetite.

It’s all in the Brain, food craving’s and the desire for food come from the brain first, not the body.

Do you know your date of birth? The name of the President or Prime Minister? These are questions that are regularly used to test for memory loss – the first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although memory loss occurs in all cases of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be difficult to detect in the early stages as many patients manage to cover it up well during tests as a matter of pride.

It’s the recent things we’ve done such as in the last hours, days or even weeks that are the first memories to be lost in Alzheimer’s patients.

However, while those things that are placed in our short term memory are the first to go it’s only much later as the Alzheimer’s condition has become much more severe does the past or longer term memory become affected.

This makes the degree or memory loss a very useful tool in assessing the presence and scope of the disease as if the patient is co-operative and asked in a pleasant way the results can be very revealing.

The following ten questions form part of a common test as they cover both the short and the long term memory and also test for orientation as well.

How old are you?

What is your date of birth?

What day is it today?

What month are we in?

What year is it?

When was the first world war?

What is the name of the President / Prime Minister?

Where are you now?

Can you please count backwards from 20 to 1?

Tell them an address, then ask them to repeat it back to you after five minutes.

Although the test is deceptively easy it is also very useful as it’s quick, cheap, non-evasive and helps diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and gives an indication of the areas in the patient’s memory that may be affected.

Care must always be taken as a low score on its own doesn’t prove dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, as not all people will know all the answers to the questions!

Instead it’s a guide or an indication that something may be wrong and requires further investigation.

Learning Spanish Has Never Been Easier : Memory Exercises

Article by Douglas Bower

Mnemonic memory training is a memory system that allows you to store information in and recall it from your long-term memory, and, in the case of learning a new language, your speech center. Mnemonics gives you a way to organize information, store it, and recall it. The better information is organized and stored, the easier you will be able to recall it when it is needed and the longer it will stay in your head. If you do mnemonics correctly, you concentrate and focus on information you want to remember in a way that will almost guarantee you will never forget it.

Some twenty-five years after going through my first mnemonic memory course, I still recall vocabulary words in French and I do not speak French at all. In the course, as an exercise, we learned some French words using the Substitute Word System–a mnemonic device–and I still can remember them. Now that is Memory Training. This is what mnemonics does for you: it creates a way for a simple, effective, and efficient storage and retrieval system. In other words, mnemonics provides you a way to find the information in your head. It is essentially like a search engine on the Internet in your head.

Some offer criticism of mnemonics. They say mnemonic training does not teach you to understand the information you are trying to remember. I find this a nonsense objection. Why would you be trying to remember something you do not understand? The very fact that you want to recall something means, in some way or other, you have a need to recall it and it implies there is at least some understanding of the material you are trying to remember.

Another criticism is mnemonic training is time-consuming. The truth is that it is indeed time consuming–all memory work is. But would you rather engage in something that will guarantee you will be able to remember the information or engage in some rote memory exercise that will almost guarantee you will NOT recall the information? I find I can store more than twenty NEW Spanish vocabulary words per day and ALWAYS remember them. I know some who can do ten times that amount.

Example of How I do it:

1) despejado–clear as in a clear sky

Imagine a clear sky–a totally beautiful day–spades suddenly materialize in the sky and begin falling like deadly arrows. This causes you to have to hide under a huge mound of dough until the danger passes.

2) el dependiente–the clerk

Imagine “L” tells a restaurant check out clerk that he depends on begin able to come in each day for a spot of tea.

3) el pa

Brain Training For Complete Health

Habits are what guide many people through their day-to-day routines and brain training is something you can use to help you stay mentally focused and sharp.

Your brain is a very complicated organ. There are key elements that anyone can do to help the brain remain in the best mental state possible.

When you are performing the same activities on a daily basis, your brain can become lazy. Each day you may feel as though you are on autopilot and you might even forget some of the things you did throughout the day. Your brain might need some stimuli to stay in the best shape possible and this is something that you can easily do each day at home.

When you are beginning a brain fitness regimen you might find that it can be hard to focus and keep your attention. This is a barrier that you will need to overcome in order to introduce your brain to new activities. Once you overcome this barrier you will be able to begin to start improving brain health and this can help you to begin to improve things like memory, and even motor control.

When you are looking for the right exercise it can be important to tie in things that are also familiar. This can help you to begin training your brain with things that are not familiar and also familiar. This is a key to focus and this can help you ease into the transition of learning new things.

You also need a commitment to the exercises that you perform. If you only complete your exercises occasionally, you would not see the results that you would if you do them on a regular basis.

Setting a time each week to focus and concentrate on improving brain function can be a key to learning.

As you begin to see the right changes occurring in your brain function, you can reward yourself for these new skills that you have improved upon. Positive reinforcement can keep you on the right path and help you to stay focused to do more in the future. Your daily life may be improved significantly and you will be able to remember much more then ever before.

Brain training can help many people with improvement in the way their brain functions. It is never too early too start!

Secrets of Method Acting – part 4 : Memory Exercises

Article by Neils Bohr

The Breakfast Drink is the first Sense Memory exercise.

The Breakfast Drink The purpose of this exercise is to experience and fix in memory the reliving of all the sensory aspects of the breakfast drink. Choose what you habitually drink in the morning (e.g. a cold fruit juice or a hot drink like tea or coffee). Take the cup or glass in both hands and concentrate on your five senses one at a time. Breathe in the smell. Concentrate on the aroma. Allow yourself to feel the heat, steam or cold of the cup. Explore the cup with your hands. Note the weight and texture of it. Be aware of the patterns or decorations on the cup. Note any cracks, nicks or flaws. Listen to the liquid as you stir it or swirl it. See the color, size and shape of the cup. Taste the liquid. Be aware of the temperature, texture and flavor. Also pay attention to the cup against you mouth.

This whole procedure should be done slowly. Deeply explore all of the sensations. The more time to devote to exploration, the more beneficial the exercise becomes. The idea is to be entirely focused and completely concentrated on the breakfast drink.

Now set the container down, turn away and repeat the entire procedure without the breakfast drink.

If you find that you are not able to recreate some of the sensations experienced with the actual cup or glass in your hand, go back to the physical object itself and explore it again. Concentrate on weak sensory aspects as you work with the container (for example, if you cannot re-live the odor, return to the drink and focus on the odor in particular). By thus alternating between the actual drink and imaginarily re-experiencing the drink, weak sensory aspects may be strengthened.

The goal of this exercise is to improve concentration, but specifically this is an attempt to determine how many of your senses are working.

The “breakfast drink” refers to coffee. Coffee has a distinct smell. As you have learned, smell is an important trigger for memory recall. Using a cup of coffee as the breakfast drink will make the exercise easier. However, the exercise is called the breakfast drink so that any cup and liquid may be used.

Improv and Brain Training

In today’s fast paced world there is nothing like improv comedy training to sharpen your mental skills. Who is the person whose ideas most often get heard, the man who sits in a meeting and thinks and ponders or the woman who jumps on the questions posed and comes up with an idea?

I am not saying either way produces a better idea, because in reality either method could be used to come up with the ultimate solution, or more likely the two will be combined to offer the best plan.

So how does one start to develop these skills? To start with, searching the internet one can find loads of information on improv comedy whether you are looking for books, articles, groups or anything else.

The beginnings of improv are a matter of debate, but most would point to Keith Johnstone, the creator of Theatre Sports, Viola Spolin, the “Grandmother of American Improv.” For two great reads on this subject, Johnstone’s “Impro: Improvisation and the Theater” and Spolin’s “Improvisation for the Theater” are chock full of exercises and information.

But for real experience, reading about improv is like watching a movie about taking a bath. You can’t get clean with the latter and you can’t get your hands dirty with actually getting into a workshop and putting yourself out there on the chopping block.

Some would say being on stage is the ultimate test of an improvisational actor, but most people aren’t looking for that level of exposure. And it is exposure. You have to be totally open to complete disaster, and be willing to embrace it and learn from it, if you are going to climb onto a stage. Therefore group work in workshops is probably the safest format for the average citizen looking to sharpen his or her mental skills.

Most improv is based on some sort of ‘game’ where the players are going to assume some sort of role and have random characteristics thrown at them and then they have to create something interesting out of it.

Being put on the spot gets your mental juices flowing, or you can just freeze. The difference is experience and the willingness to lay it on the line.

The first time you have a reaction from those around you, (which doesn’t necessarily have to be laughter, it could be groans or tears) you can become hooked and want to do it more and more. More traditional actors may welcome the scripted role, but I have found the freedom of improv to be exhilarating.

If this interests you at all, I would strongly urge you to go online and search for an improv workshop. You may be surprised to find one within short driving distance of your home, as many community colleges are embracing this new form of brain training.

What is causing the surge in popularity of on line Bingo and in particular its appeal among the older population? Research conducted by on line gaming companies has attempted to examine the factors which motivate older adults to play bingo. Results found that many adults are becoming increasingly aware of the beneficial effects of playing bingo, aside from sheer enjoyment. So is this the reason that our aging population are taking up the game?

In the preface of the Second Edition of The Graying of America: An Encyclopedia of Aging, Health, Mind and Behavior, published in 2001, Donald H. Kausler and Barry C. Kausler stated that

Discount Vitamins

When local nutrition stores have discount sales, they normally have a limited supply of the vitamins that have on sale.  Once they have been sold, that is normally the end of that particular vitamin being offered at discount price for the duration of the sale.  Other times, the time frame of the sale may make it hard to get to the store.  If you don’t know about the sale in advance, it may conflict with your schedule and you miss out on it.

Many stores that are going to be having discount vitamin sales will run coupons and fliers in local papers and magazines.  The Sunday paper for instance, is always full of magazines and coupons, which is normally where they advertise the sales.  Even though there may be a lot of advertisements found in the Sunday paper, it is normally where you find the best deals.  If you spend some time going through the advertisements, you can normally find some great sales, including sales at your local nutrition store.

Another great way to get discount vitamins is buy them in bulk.  A lot of people underestimate buying bulk, as they don’t understand just how great this can be.  If you buy bulk at your local nutrition store, you are more than likely going to get a great deal.  Even though your local store may be offering discount vitamins through a sale, buying bulk is sometimes cheaper than even their best sales.

The reason for this, is the fact that bulk purchases off the best possible prices on discount vitamins.  If you are looking to take certain vitamins on a frequent or daily basis, buying in bulk may be the best decision.  If you buy vitamin A or vitamin C in bulk, you can get it at a great price with enough of a supply to last you for a long time.  When buying in bulk, you’ll get a great price and enough of the vitamin to keep you from going back to the store for quite a while.

If you buy in bulk, you should make sure that you can use the vitamins before the expiration date expires.  There are many vitamins out there that have expiration dates, after which they must be discarded if they aren’t used.  Even though buying in bulk is always the preferred way to buy your discount vitamins, you should make sure that you can use the vitamins before they expire.  You should never feel pressured or even tempted to buy in bulk unless you know for sure you can use all of the vitamins.

With many options available to you, discount vitamins are the ideal purchase to get the vitamins and supplements you need.  Millions of us all across the United States take vitamins on a daily basis, making them a sound investment.  Even though you can buy vitamins on sale at your local nutrition store or online, buying bulk is always the best way to make your purchase.  You can get a great price on your vitamins – and have more than enough to keep you going for a long time.

Brain Training: It Works (to Improve Mental Skills) and It Doesn’t (to reduce Brain Age) : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

Copyright (c) 2009 SharpBrains

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic and USC Davis have just announced publication of their IMPACT study at the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The press release announces:

– “Of the 487 healthy adults over the age of 65 who participated in a randomized controlled trial, half used the Brain Fitness Program for 40 hours over the course of eight weeks. The Brain Fitness Program consists of six audio exercises done on a computer, and is intended to “retrain the brain to discriminate fine distinctions in sound, and do it in a way that keeps the user engaged,” Zelinski explained.” The other half of participants spent an equal amount of time learning from educational DVDs followed by quizzes.

This is a very interesting study, in that it shows both that brain/ cognitive training works, and that it doesn’t work.

What do I mean?

Well, it is time we move beyond this superficial discussion on it works/ it doesn’t work, and we started discussing Work for Whom? Work for What?

1) It works: the intervention (computerized cognitive training) showed cognitive benefits beyond the control (educational DVDs followed by quizzes). This is significant both in that it shows that people over 65 can improve their mental abilities, and that can be done in scalable ways, thanks to emerging technology tools. Obviously more research needs to be done, but results like these would have been considered impossible not so long ago.

2) It doesn’t work: those cognitive benefits were closely related to the trained auditory areas. The results don’t support grandiose claims that the program “helps rejuvenate one’s brain 10 years” or similar, which we hear all too often.

This is but one study in a rapidly growing area (this one is pretty large, and multi-site, and conducted by independent researchers). The key questions are becoming:

– 1) who may benefit most from improving on specific cognitive domains- auditory processing in this case?,

– 2) how can healthcare professionals support patients from a preventive and brain maintenance point of view (please note the study above had nothing to do with Alzheimer’s Disease, but with the enhancement of cognitive functions)

– 3) how can consumers navigate the growing number of products and claims?

I interviewed USC Davis’ Elizabeth Zelinski, one of the scientists involved in the study, and this is what she said:

– “The program we used, Brain Fitness 2.0, trains auditory processing. The people in the experimental group improved very significantly, which was not that surprising. What was very surprising was that there was also a clear benefit in auditory memory, which wasn’t directly trained. In other words, people who were 75-years-old performed auditory memory tasks as well as average 65-year-olds, so we can say they reversed 10 years of aging for that cognitive ability.”

In short, if you are considering buying some of these new programs, for yourself, your patients, a loved one…you do need to do a bit of homework. Yes, it would be easier if there were more specific and categorical answers…but for the time being there aren’t, apart from the general guidelines to stay active physically and mentally, manage stress levels, have a balanced nutrition.

So, ask yourself, what specific cognitive abilities would you like to work on and improve? what program offers credible evidence that it may help exercise and improve them? for what group of people (age, healthy or clinical problems,…) does the program seem like a better fit?

Short Term Loans for Short Term Needs

There are hundreds of reasons why people need short term loans. And there are hundreds of lenders who will be happy to advance you the money you need for the short period of time you need it. Here’s an overview of how it works.

What are Short Term Needs and Loans?
An emergency short-term need arises when there is an unexpected expense such as a household repair, a medical bill or a car repair that must be done right away. Other emergency situations might include the need for an immediate trip or an unanticipated legal fee.  If you had a car accident, you may need to pay for a rental car for a few days.

But not all short term needs are true emergencies. They can occur simply because the household expenses outweigh the income for the month. Or they might come about because there is some special event that needs to be paid for, such an anniversary or school event.  No one wants to tell their child they don’t have money for the school fair days.  That’s a memory your kid will never forget.

Most loans that are called short term loans are to cover the period of time between when you get the loan and when you get your next paycheck. If you get paid every week, your loan will be for no more than a week. If you get paid ever two weeks, your loan will be up to two weeks. And if you get paid monthly, your term is one month.

What to Do if You Need a Loan
You can apply for a cash loans online at any of a number of websites owned by lenders.

It’s a good idea to check out several to get a feel for which ones are reputable and offer the best terms. You will have to supply information about your job and your bank account and prove who you are. Other than that, there’s really not much to the application process.

You’ll get answer about your loan right away and the money from short term loans is usually deposited into your bank account within 24 hours. You’ll be paying the loan back from the same bank account so be sure you have enough money in the account to cover the repayment when it’s due. Otherwise you’ll have to pay an additional fee.

There has been the common notion that Vitamin E is good for the skin. What about the case of acne scars? Will Vitamin E be effective in diminishing acne scars? Of course there are other options for acne scars treatment such as chemical peels, Fraxel laser and dermabrasion. They seem to be proven methods of removing acne scars. But then again, one important matter should be put into consideration – the cost. Vitamin E ointment just may be a solution to acne scars if you want something affordable and economical. But is it really effective? Researchers in Dermatologic Surgery did an investigation on the efficacy of applying Vitamin E on acne scars.

The verdict: application of this vitamin to healing wounds can actually hinder the skin’s repair process, therefore, topical Vitamin E for acne scars treatment should be eliminated from your list. Fifteen subjects were involved in the study, each of them having undergone skin cancer removal surgery. The subjects were given two types of ointment: Ointment A whose components are that of common moisturizing agents, and ointment B which has the same ingredients but only with added Vitamin E. During weeks one, four and twelve of the study, the patients and the doctors observed the effects of the ointments on the scars.

The results of this study showed that for 90% of the subjects, topical Vitamin E either wasn’t effective or actually worsened the appearance of the scars. Thirty-three percent of the subjects also acquired contact dermatitis from the application containing the vitamin. According to the result of this study and contrary to held beliefs, topical Vitamin E is discouraged in the treatment of acne scars. While the topical form of this vitamin was proven to be ineffective in diminishing acne scars, consumption of Vitamin E in the diet, however, can actually have positive results for the skin. Ingesting this vitamin nutrient may aid in the skin’s healing process, such as that of acne scars.

This has been proven in a study reported by the International Journal of Experimental Pathology. This study investigated and found that wound healing is slowed down if the body has a deficiency of antioxidants such as Vitamin E. It’s efficacy in acne scars healing is proven especially if adequate amounts of this fat soluble nutrient is consumed. It means a daily RDA intake of 30 International Units (IU). For adults, intake level of this vitamin could go up to as far as 1,500 IU daily. Sunflower seed kernels, sunflower oil wheat, almonds, hazel nut and germ oil are rich sources of this vitamin.

Vitamin E supplements should also be considered to augment the intake of this nutrient. Vitamin E is usually sold in a form of alpha-tocopherol that preserves its antioxidant ability. The synthetic sort of this vitamin sold in pharmacies are labeled “D, L”, and the natural form “D”. Its synthetic form, however, is only half as effective as its natural form. To better state it, healing of acne scars can be hastened by both Vitamin E creams and a Vitamin E-rich diet.
