Spinach As Brain Food: He Was Actually Popeye The Memory Man : Brain Foods

Article by Z.N. Catex

That spinach Popeye slugged down at the end of every cartoon was actually doing more than giving him bizarrely muscular forearms. If recent research involving the anti-aging properties of spinach is right, he must have had one helluva memory.

A 2008 study of more than 3,500 Chicago-area senior citizens showed that eating at least 2.8 servings of vegetables a day can slow the rate of cognitive decline by as much as 40% – making the rate of decline about the same as that experienced by people five years younger.

Spinach turned out to be the top memory booster, though all green leafy vegetables (which are high in antioxidant properties) were highly effective.

Green leafies not your thing? Then go for the most colorful produce you can find, since foods with the highest antioxidant activity are generally the most colorful.

The Chicago study confirms animal studies that showed spinach to be a potent tool against brain aging. The animal research found that feeding large amounts of spinach to aging lab animals resultes in improved motor skills and learning capacity.

Surprisingly, the Chicago study didn’t see the same level of improvement when participants’ diets included increased servings of fruit. However while its possible that increasing the intake of certain vegetables is particularly effective in slowing cognitive decline, upping the consumption of any antioxidant-rich food is almost certainly beneficial.

University of California research indicates that purple fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, cranberries and Concord grapes, may be especially beneficial for the brain, and compounds found in apples, strawberries, and even curry spice activate neural pathways and enhance memory.

Even if your memory is already great, there are lots of reasons to add spinach to your diet; this is one veggie that packs some serious nutritional punch. Research has identified more than a dozen spinach flavinoids that function as antioxidants and have anti-cancer potential.

Vitamin K, which is abundant in spinach, is essential to maintaining bone strength and is considerred important to the prevention of bone diseases like osteoporosis. It’s also an excellent source of vitamins A and C, which can help prevent cholesterol-related heart and circulatory problems.

The nutrient combo in spinach has proven to be beneficial to conditions that involve inflammatory problems, including asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Spinach is an outstanding source of dietary iron, which is crucial for metabolism and energy production. Iron is integral to the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to all body cells, and is also a necessary component of key enzyme systems.

Omega-3 ba brain food ads pulled in UK : Brain Foods

Article by White Digital Media

Magazine adverts for follow-on formula containing prebiotic and omega-3s are in hot water in the UK due to making brain health claims unauthorised by the European Union Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) admonished the UK firm, HiPP Organic, that its ads must be changed due to omega-3-infant development claims not being adopted into EU law even though they had won positive opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Given no such claim was authorised in the UK when the NHCR became active on January 19, 2007, it could not therefore gain transitional status until any EFSA opinion became EU law.

Moreover, the ASA found the EFSA opinion HiPP Organic referenced, along with other supportive data, was for formulations that were sufficiently different to HiPP’s own, and therefore not directly supportive.

“We therefore concluded that the ad was misleading,” it wrote in its judgement.

In its defence, HiPP submitted a summary of omega-3 claims that had been assessed by EFSA and a list of claims in the area being used in other countries. They noted omega-3 form ALA (alpha linoleic acid) was an essential nutrient for all age groups, including infants.

HiPP stated that its claim related solely to the role of ALA in normal and healthy development of the brain and nervous system tissues and not specifically to mental performance.

However, the ASA said the evidence was not strong enough for the baby age group the ad targeted and that the dosage was not proven to be sufficient to deliver the stated benefit.

It was discovered though that HiPP’s advertisement did not imply the product was equivalent to breast milk, and therefore not in breach of infant formula rules despite stating: “We’ve learnt from the breast.”

It contained the disclaimer saying: “…Breastfeeding is best for babies. HiPP Organic Follow on milks are intended for use after 6 months of age as part of a mixed diet and should not be used as a breastmilk substitute before this age. Use on the advice of a healthcare professional…”

HiPP’s ad in part stated: “Essential Omega 3 fatty acids… for healthy brain and nervous system development.”

In addition, the “unique mix of prebiotic oligosaccharides” supported, “the growth of good bacteria in your baby’s tummy and promote comfortable digestion.”

Vitamin to Optimize Brain Function and Prevent Memory Loss : Brain Vitamin

Article by Healthy_Woman

Many people worry about loss of memory as they become older. As we get older our brain start to degenerate which can result decrease in memory and cognitive function. However, memory loss not only occur in older people but it can occur to anyone.

One of the best things you can do to optimize brain function and prevent memory loss by taking brain vitamin supplements. Here are some types of vitamins that can protect and enhance your brain and memory:

1. Ginkgo Bilbo a Chinese medicine, which is traditional and used for many years is marketed as enhancement to aid concentration and memory. The basic evidence of these benefits is credible though. Ginkgo’s most exciting application may be in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by helping to speed the blood flow to the brain and aiding the brain to utilize glucose efficiently. Ginkgo Biloba is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the brain from neurotoxicity. It is said to prevent free-radical damage and age-related declines in brain function.

2. Omega-3 play a vital role in enhancing memory and improving our thinking skills. Studies have shown that Omega-3 fats can protect the brain against inflammation. Food sources rich in Omega-3 are cold-water fish (such as salmon, mackerel and tuna ), walnuts and Flax Seed.

3. A Huperzine: – This compound is naturally found which works practically similar for Alzheimer’s disease, the activity of compound helps in slowing down of enzyme acetyl cholesterol which affect the central nervous systems. It has been found out by studies which indicate that Huperzine A can have some naturally good effects on following measures, behavioral disturbance and general cognitive function in the alzheimer’s disease.

4. The Acetyl-L-carnitine – The compound named amino acid might help the Alzheimer’s patients with some of the memory problems is observed by some studies.

5. Antioxidants are so important to protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radical is a toxic oxygen molecules that has known to contribute to many of the most degenerative and horrible diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, blindness, alzheimer, arthritis and cancers

Antioxidants are found abundant in many fruits and vegetables including vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene, lutein, selenium and lycopene. Food sources rich in antioxidant are tomatoes, berries, sweet potatoes; red tomatoes, leafy green vegetables, (broccoli, spinach and kale),carrots, tea, nuts and seeds, and animal products beef, fish, turkey, chicken, liver, and eggs).

Top 10 Brain Training Future Trends: New Mind/Body Focus, Brain Trainers, and More : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains

In an emerging, dynamic, high growth market, like brain training, it is difficult to make precise projections. But, we can observe a number of trends that executives, consumers, public policy makers, and the media should watch closely in the coming years, as brain fitness and training becomes mainstream, new brain trainers appear, and an ecosystem grows around it.

1. We predict an increased emphasis on brain maintenance in locations ranging from retirement communities to gyms. As a computer-savvy baby boomer population looks for ways to stay mentally fit, brain fitness, or brain training, is becoming part of their vocabulary and concern.

2. Physical and mental exercise will be better integrated. Physical exercise has been shown to increase the rate of neurogenesis, whereas mental exercise helps ensure the survival of any newly created neurons. Today both activities usually take place in very different settings: the former, in health clubs, the later, in universities. We predict that the borders between them will become more diffuse. Expect new programs such as brain fitness podcasts that allow us to train working memory as we jog or exercise bikes with built-in brain games.

3. Watch for a broad government initiative, similar to the one JFK led, to increase the public awareness of the need for brain fitness. It is becoming more widely understood by the medical and policy community that a combination of physical exercise, nutrition, mental exercise and stress management can help us maintain our brain health as we age. As politicians and policy makers look for ways to delay the onset of Alzheimer-related symptoms of our aging population, new initiatives may be launched.

4. Better and more widely available assessments of cognitive function will serve as objective baselines to measure the impact of cognitive training interventions. There will also likely be better diagnostic tests to identify early Alzheimer’s symptoms, for example. Reliable diagnostic assessments of cognitive abilities will help move this field forward just as jumping on a scale tells you if your physical fitness and diet program is working.

5. Improved computer-based tools will come to market. The growing pipeline of research studies will enable the market leaders and new entrants to refine existing tools and devise new ones. More clinical studies will show the benefits of brain fitness programs to address specific clinical conditions and learning disabilities.

6. Low tech options will play an increasing role in the brain fitness field. Already, increasing research is showing the cognitive value and brain plasticity impact of interventions such as meditation and cognitive therapy. More research and wider applications will help refine our understanding of when and how they can be most helpful.

7. Doctors and pharmacists will help patients navigate through the overwhelming range of available products and interpret the results of cognitive assessments. This will require significant professional development efforts, given that most doctors today were trained under a very different understanding of the brain than the one we have today.

8. Insurance companies will introduce incentives for members to encourage healthy aging. Many insurance plans today include rewards for members who, for example, voluntarily take health-related questionnaires that enable them to identify steps to take to improve health. Increasingly, brain-related lifestyle factors will become part of these incentivized interventions.

9. Investments in new cognitive interventions for the U.S. military will be commercialized. As the military increasingly funds research to improve the diagnostic and treatment of problems such as PTSD and TBI, the resulting products will ultimately find commercial uses.

10. Brain training will be added to corporate wellness and leadership initiatives. Large employers with existing corporate wellness and leadership programs will introduce brain fitness specific programs aimed not only at improved health outcomes but also at increased productivity and cognitive performance in the workplace.

Finally, here goes some food for thought: Which prediction sounds more surprising? which one would you add?

Fish Is Brain Food. Eat Fish for Brain Improvement and Memory Improvement : Brain Foods

Article by Peter Leigh

Many people are aware of the health benefits of increasing your intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids DHA and EPA. But fewer people are aware of the strong links between Omega 3 and brain function, or in other words how to improve brain function and memory, combat ADD or ADHD or improve emotional disorders like depression.

Many scientists consider that the crucial link between early human beings like the Neanderthal, and modern human beings was the point at which we began to eat seafood.

Seafood, and particularly oily fish, contains the Omega 3 essential fatty acids DHA and EPA, DHA being the most important of these.

Your brain is about 60 percent fat, and DHA is the most important of those fats. An adequate supply of DHA is one of the most crucial factors in facilitating the transmission of brain signals. But if your brain doesn’t have enough DHA it won’t work as well.

When the early human beings began eating seafood their brains began to develop because of the increase in intake of DHA. Neanderthals, for example, primarily ate red meat, which supplied very little DHA. But when the early humans began eating seafood their brains began to develop, according to hypotheses, as a result of this intake of DHA from fish.

But if plenty of DHA is important for brain development surely a lack of DHA will inhibit brain function? And evidence showing that this is the case.

Scientific evidence showing that an ample supply of DHA to the brain improves cognitive ability, improves memory, improves mental development in children, helps improve learning difficulties such as ADD and ADHD and can also help improve outcomes with emotional problems such as depression.

In fact many medical professionals are now suggesting that one of the most important things a pregnant woman can do is to maintain an adequate supply of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids in her diet because of the strong links between Omega 3 and brain development in the infant.

(Not to mention the benefits for the mothers own health).

So whilst many people focus on the general health benefits of taking Omega 3 supplements, for example the reduction in your risk of dying from heart attack, the health benefits to your brain may be as significant or even more so.

And it doesn’t just apply to the young. There is also increasing evidence that plenty of Omega 3 in the diet can help the brain function of the elderly by reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

So next time you’re wondering where you put the car keys, try and remember to write a simple notation on your next shopping list.

Buy Omega 3 supplements. And of course remember to take them every day. Your brain will thank you for it.

Brain Training Games: How To Find The Good Ones : Brain Training

Article by Brian Jones

Brain Training Games are one of the hottest trends in the market today. Seldom can you turn on the television without being reminded of the fears of mental decline, Alzheimer’s or the need for optimum brain functioning. The answer to these problems by some companies has been the creation of brain training games. These are designed to give you daily or weekly training that works at keeping your mind working at a high level. Unfortunately, not all these games offer the same results. For this reason, we have put together a list of tips to help you decide which games will give you the results you are looking for:

1. Look for scientific backing. Although some scientific studies can be misleading, most of the brain training games that highlight how their games have improved people’s mental skills in studies are far more likely to be sound. Avoid those brain training games where they appear to be more entertainment focused. In other words, are they promoting the game as a game or as actually delivering brain improvement? This will tell you a lot about what they feel the true value is in the game.

2. Check out what skills they are trying to develop.Read the literature of the brain training games to see which mental skills they are trying to develop and how they attempt to do so. This sophistication of their answers here should give you a good indication of their true intentions and it also will let you make a value judgment over whether the games can really improve those skills.

3. Try out the demo games and determine if you think your skills are improved. There is no substitute for actually trying out the games. For most of the online games, you can find demos of games the company makes. Try out these games after reading up on what skills these games are supposed to improve upon. After playing several different demo games from different companies, ask yourself which ones you think actually challenged you in that certain skill. Your response here will be very telling as to whether you think the brain training game can help you get more brain improvement in this area down the road. These thoughts can also be compared with other people’s opinions as mentioned in #4.

4. Read reviews to determine if people are getting results. One of the greatest resources at your disposal is people’s willingness to tell you over the Internet whether they believe a certain game actually delivers results. This critical information can be found on reviews of games, message boards, or in the comments on some video game websites. This information should be pored over to give you a better idea of the game’s true value. If you are hearing comments like the game continued to be more challenging and my brain hurt after doing it, odds are these games are delivering the results you are looking for.

As you can, finding a good brain training game is not as difficult as it might first appear. By being willing to look behind the marketing hustle, you should be able to find you some brain training games that will give you results that truly deliver brain improvement.

For more information on actual reviews of Brain Training Games, visit http://www.braintraininggames.net. It is a comprehensive site which offers solid tips and information on different brain training games and other brain improvement formats.

Brain Training Zox Pro System : Brain Training

Article by Kieth Vitou

There is much research about what parts of the brain light up when people are thinking, feeling or desiring something. We have also extended our knowledge of the role of the brain in producing the hormones, neurotransmitters and other chemicals that affect moods and behavioral responses. What are we to make of all this?

There seem to be limitations to what we can learn about people simply by studying their brain activity. Perhaps it is true that certain characteristic spots light up when people report feeling, desiring or thinking something. However, it is always possible to have a feeling that does not correspond to the normal spot lighting up. Similarly, a spot may light up but without the corresponding report.

Another limitation seems to be that no matter how well grounded our correlations become, linking brain states with mental states, we cannot read off the object of a thought, feeling or desire simply by looking at a brain lighting up. For example, we might find a strong correlation between people reporting feeling afraid and the lighting up of a certain portion of the brain. We might even become confident that we can say that the subject is feeling fear just by looking at the brain activity. Nevertheless, we cannot say just what the person is afraid of. Thought is intentional activity, and we cannot arrive at the object of an intention solely by looking at the brain.

While these limitations exist, what we are leaning about the brain does affect our understanding of ourselves as thinking and learning beings. The Socratic injunction to ‘Know Thyself’ just got more complicated. The old idea that the brain stops changing early in life has given way to the idea of the ‘neuroplasticity’ of the brain. The brain changes. Can we train the brain to work better?

Brains are like muscles. We need nourishment and exercise to keep them in shape. We can develop different sets of muscles and change our physical shape over time. Now think of the brain in the same way. We need to feed and exercise the body to keep our brains healthy. Through brain training we may be able to develop new ‘second’ natures, and reprogram our responses to things, thus, over time, changing the neural networks in our brains.

New habits of mind, perception and response need time and repetition to become ingrained. It is said that one needs six weeks or so to break one habit and establish another. During this time, our brains adapt to the change we are making in our lives.

One area of brain activity is of great potential interest. This is the action of the amygdala, in the medial temporal lobe. While our understanding of this area is not complete, the amygdala is part of the story of the fight or flight response, and ‘flying off the handle’ in general. When a tiger comes around the corner, one is running before making any conscious choice. It is an immediate response. If there were ways to prevent the ancient amygdala from carrying out some of its immediate, unthinking reactions, and put a thought process between the stimulus and the response, we could, perhaps, increase our control over our actions and emotional responses. Getting a grip the amygdala might help people shape a thought-mediated response to events rather than blindly reacting to them.

All this is a little fanciful, I admit, but to pursue the theme a bit further, consider the new job opportunities that may open up for certified ‘Brain Trainers.’ They would have to know about the effects of diet and exercise on brain function, as well as amygdala training techniques. In addition, I speculate that meditation will be part of a brain training regime. Imaging studies show that the brains of experienced meditators differ from non-meditators. Their meditation predictably produces beneficial brain waves of a type that non-meditators do not. The practice calms a person who simply breathes and attends to the moment as it unrolls. Training the brain may become part of the good life and contribute to the art of living. Perhaps integrating an awareness of brain chemistry and function into our self-understanding will contribute to the philosophical goal of self-knowledge.
