How to Improve the Brain Power Simple Techniques : Brain Power

Article by Jamie Starr

There is a popular notion that our life is just a set of different challenges. If this is the case, we have to be always ready on what our life is in store for us. We have to learn therefore to improve our brain power.

You do not need to be super intelligent like Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein for you to be able to use your brain better for there are some simple techniques that you can do to increase your brain power even with any IQ level that you have.

The first thing is for you to breathe deeply. This is because if you are taking in more air, there will be more oxygen to flow into your brain through your bloodstreams. As you breathe through your nose, you would notice that your diaphragm will drop naturally. This will give your lungs additional space to expand to. And also, successive deep breaths help your body to relax. The more relaxed you are, the more you can think well.

Another basic technique is to improve your posture. Having a good posture such as sitting straight is not just what your mother is always insisting you to do, it is also a simple technique to improve your brain power. Check this out, try to slouch down looking at the floor and letting your mouth open. Then try to solve some math problems mentally. And also try sitting up straight, shut your mouth, look forward and then solve the math problem. You would notice this is easier than the other.

Having physical exercise is also one technique to improve your brain power because by moving your body, so will your mind. It is not necessarily to be so intense physical exercise. Even for just 20 to 30 minute walk will do. This is enough to stimulate your breathing and your blood circulation. You will be able to remove your stress so you can think clearly.

There are some people who learn the skill of improving brain power by using mental technique. This is what we call as “mindfulness exercise.” With this technique, you will focus on things that are actually nagging your brain. Thus, when you already noticed those things, you will learn to deal with these by making your list on the things that must be done later. In doing so, your mind will surely be cleared from annoyances and eventually enhances your concentration.

These are some of the simple techniques for you to improve your brain power and there are many more ways that you can do. There are different foods that you can eat as brain enhancers and many herbal supplements as well that are available in the market. Therefore, if you are really serious to improve your brain power, you have to change your habit and start right now. According to psychologists, it will take 20 – 30 days for a new habit to be established. Thus, you have to commit that you will regularly do your routine for at least three weeks to become a habit.

Spinach As Brain Food: He Was Actually Popeye The Memory Man : Brain Foods

Article by Z.N. Catex

That spinach Popeye slugged down at the end of every cartoon was actually doing more than giving him bizarrely muscular forearms. If recent research involving the anti-aging properties of spinach is right, he must have had one helluva memory.

A 2008 study of more than 3,500 Chicago-area senior citizens showed that eating at least 2.8 servings of vegetables a day can slow the rate of cognitive decline by as much as 40% – making the rate of decline about the same as that experienced by people five years younger.

Spinach turned out to be the top memory booster, though all green leafy vegetables (which are high in antioxidant properties) were highly effective.

Green leafies not your thing? Then go for the most colorful produce you can find, since foods with the highest antioxidant activity are generally the most colorful.

The Chicago study confirms animal studies that showed spinach to be a potent tool against brain aging. The animal research found that feeding large amounts of spinach to aging lab animals resultes in improved motor skills and learning capacity.

Surprisingly, the Chicago study didn’t see the same level of improvement when participants’ diets included increased servings of fruit. However while its possible that increasing the intake of certain vegetables is particularly effective in slowing cognitive decline, upping the consumption of any antioxidant-rich food is almost certainly beneficial.

University of California research indicates that purple fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, cranberries and Concord grapes, may be especially beneficial for the brain, and compounds found in apples, strawberries, and even curry spice activate neural pathways and enhance memory.

Even if your memory is already great, there are lots of reasons to add spinach to your diet; this is one veggie that packs some serious nutritional punch. Research has identified more than a dozen spinach flavinoids that function as antioxidants and have anti-cancer potential.

Vitamin K, which is abundant in spinach, is essential to maintaining bone strength and is considerred important to the prevention of bone diseases like osteoporosis. It’s also an excellent source of vitamins A and C, which can help prevent cholesterol-related heart and circulatory problems.

The nutrient combo in spinach has proven to be beneficial to conditions that involve inflammatory problems, including asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Spinach is an outstanding source of dietary iron, which is crucial for metabolism and energy production. Iron is integral to the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to all body cells, and is also a necessary component of key enzyme systems.

Have you noticed that you’re finding it hard to hear other people on the phone? If you’re over 50, there’s a good possibility that the cause is simple age-related hearing loss. Special amplified telephones can get your life back to normal again. Find out what to look for in phones for hearing impaired.

Omega-3 ba brain food ads pulled in UK : Brain Foods

Article by White Digital Media

Magazine adverts for follow-on formula containing prebiotic and omega-3s are in hot water in the UK due to making brain health claims unauthorised by the European Union Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) admonished the UK firm, HiPP Organic, that its ads must be changed due to omega-3-infant development claims not being adopted into EU law even though they had won positive opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Given no such claim was authorised in the UK when the NHCR became active on January 19, 2007, it could not therefore gain transitional status until any EFSA opinion became EU law.

Moreover, the ASA found the EFSA opinion HiPP Organic referenced, along with other supportive data, was for formulations that were sufficiently different to HiPP’s own, and therefore not directly supportive.

“We therefore concluded that the ad was misleading,” it wrote in its judgement.

In its defence, HiPP submitted a summary of omega-3 claims that had been assessed by EFSA and a list of claims in the area being used in other countries. They noted omega-3 form ALA (alpha linoleic acid) was an essential nutrient for all age groups, including infants.

HiPP stated that its claim related solely to the role of ALA in normal and healthy development of the brain and nervous system tissues and not specifically to mental performance.

However, the ASA said the evidence was not strong enough for the baby age group the ad targeted and that the dosage was not proven to be sufficient to deliver the stated benefit.

It was discovered though that HiPP’s advertisement did not imply the product was equivalent to breast milk, and therefore not in breach of infant formula rules despite stating: “We’ve learnt from the breast.”

It contained the disclaimer saying: “…Breastfeeding is best for babies. HiPP Organic Follow on milks are intended for use after 6 months of age as part of a mixed diet and should not be used as a breastmilk substitute before this age. Use on the advice of a healthcare professional…”

HiPP’s ad in part stated: “Essential Omega 3 fatty acids… for healthy brain and nervous system development.”

In addition, the “unique mix of prebiotic oligosaccharides” supported, “the growth of good bacteria in your baby’s tummy and promote comfortable digestion.”

Subliminal Mp3s – What are they and do they work? : Subliminal MP3

Article by Patrick Fitz-Gibbon

There has been lots controversy recently on the topic of subliminal messages and there is still a lot of mystery around the subject.

Subliminal messages are a form of mild self hypnosis that works by sending positive affirmations into you sub conscious mind. You will not actually hear the subliminal message and you are not supposed to. You see 10% of your brain is made up of the conscious mind and the rest is sub conscious. So really when you are making every day decisions you are only using 10% of your brain.

Now if you can tune in to the rest of your brain, the sub conscious part which is 90% then you can see the power of this can’t you? The messages you are receiving are getting into the larger part of your consciousness, therefore having a deeper meaning than if you were using just your normal everyday 10%.?

Say you wanted to stop smoking. Well normally you would think yes I want to stop smoking and I will start tomorrow and I will throw out my cigarettes etc. By doing that and saying that to yourself, you are only using your conscious mind which equates to 10% so the results are going to be somewhat limited to say the least.

Now if you decided. I am going to use subliminal messaging as a form of stop smoking hypnosis and you found a hypnosis download and listened to it, you will now be using 100% of your brain to stop smoking. The results are only going to be more powerful!

The opportunities for this are limitless. For example if you were to use subliminals for self hypnosis weight loss imagine the information you need to lose weight gets into 10% of your brain AND the 90% that is not normally used? So 100% is going into you losing weight! Weight loss hypnosis is becoming increasingly popular amongst all types of people including celebrities and politicians. Try it you will be amazed at the results.

The great thing about subliminal Mp3 is that you can listen anywhere, anytime. You don’t need to be in a quiet room tucked away for an hour. You can listen while you work or whilst you are travelling and even while you sleep! Because although it is a form of hypnosis it is very mild, so mild in fact you won’t even realize it. Whereas more traditional methods of hypnosis can send you into a deep trance like state a message that is subliminal will allow you to carry on with your everyday tasks and not interrupt your patterns or affect you in any way!

If you need to make positive, long lasting changes in you life in whatever area, then you can! There is not only weight loss hypnosis there are thousands of hypnosis downloads for you to choose from, so whatever area in your life needs changing there is guaranteed to be a subliminal Mp3 to suit you.

Photographic Memory : Adding The Personal Touch To Your Wedding Photo Album

Article by Matt Jackson (BagsOfLove)

Whether you’re looking for a stunning and personal anniversary gift idea or are trying to find the perfect photo album to use on your big day, personalised wedding photo albums are a superb option. Not only is the album itself filled with your best and favourite wedding day photographs and even honeymoon shots, but you can personalise the front and rear covers too including a picture and text on the front and the option to add a second, different picture on the rear cover.

Updated Wedding Albums

As anniversary gifts, updated wedding photo albums can prove a real success. It is an unfortunate fact that older photo albums can become damaged or look aged but by giving a new and personalised photo album to the happy couple you can let them relive the photographic memories from years ago. Smaller albums are perfect for adding standard 6 x 4 prints while larger A4 photo albums are also available offering even greater freedom over the type and size of picture that is included inside.

Quality Materials Means Quality Products

The satin cover of the photo album not only offers you the chance to include a favourite wedding day photograph but it can also be customised to include a text caption or message of your choice. While it’s traditional to use this to include the names of the bride and groom as well as the date of the wedding it could also be a good space to include a personal greeting or message.

A Photo Book

As an alternative to the wedding photo album you might also consider using a personalised photo book. The cover of the photo book can be customised in much the same way as with a photo album, but instead of having to crop and mount your own pictures, they can be scanned and printed directly onto the pages of the book. Pictures can be printed right up to the edge of the leaf of paper so there is no visible white space or border around the picture, although this will obviously depend on the size and orientation of pictures to be added.

Photo Books As Anniversary Gifts

One of the great advantages of giving photo books as personalised anniversary gifts is that they can be customised even more. A good design team can work with pictures to combine more than one onto a single page using various different methods. You can also opt to have a personalised photo book storage box to match, further enhancing the use of the photo book as the perfect anniversary gift.

Update Your Memories

Wedding photo albums can become damaged or aged, and it’s highly unlikely that every picture from the big day will have been used and added to the album. Having a photo book created means that you can also add pictures from other big events; for example, anniversaries or the birth of your children to create an incredibly romantic and especially good looking anniversary gift. The possibilities are really only tempered by your imagination.

Wedding albums and photo books from Bags of Love are perfect for the big day and also make great looking, high quality anniversary gifts. The best materials and processes combine with some of the best looking items to give a feel of quality and a touch of class.

Why Vitamin D Is Important For Our Health : Vitamins

Article by David Tracy

Vitamin D is one of the several vitamins which are crucial for our health. This fat soluble vitamin can be found as ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) or cholecalciferol also known as vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the naturally occurring form that your body produces so it is easily absorbed by your body where as vitamin D2 is synthesized from plants. Once Vitamin D is produced, it is carried in the bloodstream to the liver, where it is converted into the prohormone calcidiol which is the storage form. When vitamin D is needed it will transport calcidiol to the kidneys where it is converted into calcitriol (potent steroid hormone), a more biologically active form of Vitamin D. The main purpose of calcitriol is to regulate calcium and phosphorous levels to support healthy bone function such as proper bone growth in children (rickets – soft bones) and proper bone mineralization in adults (Osteoporosis – porous bones) as well as preventing many other bone diseases such as osteomalacia (bone pain) and renal osteodystrophy (bone loss) in people with kidney failure. It is important to have enough Vitamin D to keep your calcidiol stores high as vitamin D’s secondary functions will not occur if its main purpose of maintaining healthy bone functions is not met. Once the body has enough calcitriol to regulate the calcium and phosphorous levels in the body the additional calcitriol is transported to the tissues where recent research has discovered some very exciting secondary functions of Vitamin D.

Secondary Functions * Vitamin D promotes normal cell function and growth by working as a key factor in maintaining hormonal balance and reducing inflammation of tissues. It has been shown that Calcitriol assists in the build up and break down of healthy tissue which may be why studies have shown an increase of cancer in countries with less sun light.* Sufficient amount of vitamin D in their body can hope to cope with the influenza virus as well as other respiratory tract infections much better as the immune system gets a boost by this extremely beneficial vitamin. Vitamin D helps increase the activity of your body’s “killer” T cells that destroy viruses and other foreign pathogens. * Increases cardiovascular health as it activates Vitamin D receptors in the heart and blood vessels to shut down the production of Renin which has negative effects of on oxidative stress, inflammation and regulating blood pressure. * Vitamin D can delay or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes as it is required for normal insulin secretion by the pancreas according to researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital. * Evidence suggests that vitamin D may help mood and according to vitamindcouncil.org in certain cases has been shown to be just as effective as light therapy in treating depression patients.

Side EffectsWhile an intake of vitamin D is deemed to be essential, the popular conception of consuming extra amounts in order to remain healthier does not hold true here. An excess of vitamin D can prove to extremely dangerous as it tends to calcify the soft tissues like the heart, lung and blood tissues impairing their functions greatly. The functioning of the kidneys are affected by high doses of vitamin D and severe muscle cramps, headaches accompanied by nausea and high blood pressure may often be an outcome of increased levels of vitamin D within the body.Vitamin D can also react adversely with some prescribed drugs. Phenobarbital and phenytoin affects calcium absorption, particularly when taken together with vitamin D supplements. Intake of vitamin D together with steroids and cholesterol-lowering drugs like cholestyramine may prove to be counterproductive. If vitamin d is taken it in tandem with Orlistat (a weight reducing drug) it may cause a reduction in the absorption of vitamin D.

Conclusion

There are no visible symptoms of vitamin D deficiency; however, the lack of vitamin D can have a detrimental on your health. It has been estimated that about 70% of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. While vitamin D can be found in small amounts in a number of food products such as fatty fishes and fortified in products such as dairy and juices; the primary source (80-90% of what the body gets) of this extremely beneficial vitamin is sunlight. Humans require about 20 minutes of sun exposure a day to receive the daily recommended amount 200 IU but some health care providers are suggesting you can take up to 2,000 IU a day without any adverse affects. If you live in colder climates, work inside all day, wear a high SPF cream/sun block or depending on the season (winter months) this may be difficult to achieve. Vitamin D supplements may be the easiest way to ensure you are receiving all the health benefits from this essential vitamin all year round. If you are a vegetarian, vitamin D2 may be a better solution for your vitamin D deficiency as many vitamin D3 supplements are derived from animal wool or feathers.

It is so important to eat a balance diet because your body will only run as good as the fuel you put into it. Short Term Memory : Using Vitamins to Improve Your Memory

Article by Martin Mak

Can vitamins help you improve your memory? An Australian study has found that older folks who took vitamin B12 and folic acid (vitamin B9) supplements for two years had greater improvements on short and long term memory tests compared to adults who did not.

Though the results were modest, they were certainly encouraging according to Dr Janine Walker, a researcher of Australian National University and one of the authors of the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. She said “Vitamins may have an important role in promoting healthy ageing and mental well-being, as well as sustaining good cognitive function for longer on a community-wide scale.

In tests, researchers asked more than 700 people aged 60 to 74 years to take a daily dose of 400 micrograms of folic acid and 100 micrograms of vitamin B12, or placebo pills that resembled the vitamins. Participants did not know which pills they were assigned to take.

The test subjects were chosen because they had showed signs of depression although none had been diagnosed with clinical depression. Dr Walker said, “We felt that older people with elevated depression symptoms were an important cohort to target given evidence that late life depression is associated with increased risk of cognitive impairment.”

There seemed to be no difference between the groups in how well people scored on mental tests, including those on memory, attention and speed. after a year. But after 2 years, those who took the vitamins showed more, if modest, improvement in their scores on the memory tasks.

On a short-term test, for instance, those who took the fake pills improved their score from 5.2 to 5.5 over 2 years. Those who took the vitamins raised their test scores from 5.16 to 5.6.

Using short term memory, a person dials a number that someone has just told him, while long term memory comes into play when he calls that number a day or week later.

The mechanism on how taking vitamins might work to improve brain function is not yet clear. Perhaps the vitamins reduce the body’s levels of a molecule called homocysteine, which is linked to cardiovascular disease and poor cognitive function.

The idea is that lowering homocysteine could perhaps reduce the cardiovascular risk and in turn, after mental function.

Further tests are needed, including that on whether other groups of people, especially those older than the people in the study, would also benefit from taking Vitamins.

Martin Mak has developed a new program to help people enhance their memory and learning experience. Find out how with his free and popular ecourse athttp://www.mightymemory.com

Article by Healthy_Woman

Many people worry about loss of memory as they become older. As we get older our brain start to degenerate which can result decrease in memory and cognitive function. However, memory loss not only occur in older people but it can occur to anyone.

One of the best things you can do to optimize brain function and prevent memory loss by taking brain vitamin supplements. Here are some types of vitamins that can protect and enhance your brain and memory:

1. Ginkgo Bilbo a Chinese medicine, which is traditional and used for many years is marketed as enhancement to aid concentration and memory. The basic evidence of these benefits is credible though. Ginkgo’s most exciting application may be in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by helping to speed the blood flow to the brain and aiding the brain to utilize glucose efficiently. Ginkgo Biloba is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the brain from neurotoxicity. It is said to prevent free-radical damage and age-related declines in brain function.

2. Omega-3 play a vital role in enhancing memory and improving our thinking skills. Studies have shown that Omega-3 fats can protect the brain against inflammation. Food sources rich in Omega-3 are cold-water fish (such as salmon, mackerel and tuna ), walnuts and Flax Seed.

Top 10 Brain Training Future Trends: New Mind/Body Focus, Brain Trainers, and More : Brain Training

Article by Alvaro Fernandez

Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains

In an emerging, dynamic, high growth market, like brain training, it is difficult to make precise projections. But, we can observe a number of trends that executives, consumers, public policy makers, and the media should watch closely in the coming years, as brain fitness and training becomes mainstream, new brain trainers appear, and an ecosystem grows around it.

1. We predict an increased emphasis on brain maintenance in locations ranging from retirement communities to gyms. As a computer-savvy baby boomer population looks for ways to stay mentally fit, brain fitness, or brain training, is becoming part of their vocabulary and concern.

2. Physical and mental exercise will be better integrated. Physical exercise has been shown to increase the rate of neurogenesis, whereas mental exercise helps ensure the survival of any newly created neurons. Today both activities usually take place in very different settings: the former, in health clubs, the later, in universities. We predict that the borders between them will become more diffuse. Expect new programs such as brain fitness podcasts that allow us to train working memory as we jog or exercise bikes with built-in brain games.

3. Watch for a broad government initiative, similar to the one JFK led, to increase the public awareness of the need for brain fitness. It is becoming more widely understood by the medical and policy community that a combination of physical exercise, nutrition, mental exercise and stress management can help us maintain our brain health as we age. As politicians and policy makers look for ways to delay the onset of Alzheimer-related symptoms of our aging population, new initiatives may be launched.

4. Better and more widely available assessments of cognitive function will serve as objective baselines to measure the impact of cognitive training interventions. There will also likely be better diagnostic tests to identify early Alzheimer’s symptoms, for example. Reliable diagnostic assessments of cognitive abilities will help move this field forward just as jumping on a scale tells you if your physical fitness and diet program is working.

5. Improved computer-based tools will come to market. The growing pipeline of research studies will enable the market leaders and new entrants to refine existing tools and devise new ones. More clinical studies will show the benefits of brain fitness programs to address specific clinical conditions and learning disabilities.

6. Low tech options will play an increasing role in the brain fitness field. Already, increasing research is showing the cognitive value and brain plasticity impact of interventions such as meditation and cognitive therapy. More research and wider applications will help refine our understanding of when and how they can be most helpful.

7. Doctors and pharmacists will help patients navigate through the overwhelming range of available products and interpret the results of cognitive assessments. This will require significant professional development efforts, given that most doctors today were trained under a very different understanding of the brain than the one we have today.

8. Insurance companies will introduce incentives for members to encourage healthy aging. Many insurance plans today include rewards for members who, for example, voluntarily take health-related questionnaires that enable them to identify steps to take to improve health. Increasingly, brain-related lifestyle factors will become part of these incentivized interventions.

9. Investments in new cognitive interventions for the U.S. military will be commercialized. As the military increasingly funds research to improve the diagnostic and treatment of problems such as PTSD and TBI, the resulting products will ultimately find commercial uses.

10. Brain training will be added to corporate wellness and leadership initiatives. Memory Enhancement Techniques That Can Change Your Life : Memory Exercises

Article by Gregory Frost

You might have a face that is anti-wrinkle despite being 60 years old, but your memory capacity will definitely be eaten up as you continue to age. Memory loss in old age cannot be stopped for sure, but it can definitely be slowed down. There are plenty of supplements out there but unfortunately, none of them is The Miracle Pill. Hence, the only way to give your memory a boost is to learn some of the memory enhancement techniques that can really change your life.

When using the memory enhancement techniques, the main idea is to make full use of our brain and memory so as to keep us thinking and “moving” at all times. Most of the memory techniques available here are easy to follow, as such; you would definitely not have to worry about going to the extreme ends of the spectrum.

Firstly, we must learn some of the ways whereby our memory power can be built up. Remembering information such as addresses, numbers and names will help to ensure that our memory is being worked out. This is also a form of memory exercise that allows you to exercise your brain to take and store in memory. Alternatively, playing mind-boggling games and puzzles will help out in developing your memory power.

Another technique to improve your memory is to learn the tricks of storing memory. This would refer to how different people are able to store in memory, within just a short period of time or so called ‘Photographic Memory’. The technique used to develop this photographic memory varies from people to people. But the more common one is to have a mental scenario of the things that you are supposed to remember. For example, when you are given a list of items for grocery shopping, simply use the words from the list to form a mental scenario. Example, if you are given a list of: cat, skirt and banana, try to create an image whereby there is a cat wearing a skirt trying to eat a banana. If there are plenty more items to add to the list, then just continue to link these items to the initial image. Lastly, just remember to link the last item back to the first item. Do explore newer methods of remember long twinning information.

Let us not forget that the most common method is the ability to keep up with a healthy diet at all times. Despite being relatively easy to do, many have ignored this and choose to lead the unhealthy and unbalanced diet, which consists of chips, chips and more chips! A healthy diet helps with the circulation in the body and as such the brain is able to benefit from this too. Foods like broccoli, spinach and blueberries are definitely encouraged. At the same time, remember to include a few simple exercises as part of the healthy routine. Believe it or not, simple exercises can help to rejuvenate the mind and soul. This will allow you to free yourself and loosen up the tensed muscle that might have accumulated whilst you were busy running around in rage in the office.

These memory improvement techniques do not cost you a single penny. However, you will definitely have to put in some discipline and effort to make sure that you are able to keep up with every itsy bitsy detail. Nothing can beat these free and easy methods!
