It is only thanks to recent insights from cognitive psychology about the nature of short term memory and its importance in cognitive functioning have at last enabled a training exercise to be engineered that improves IQ. We can improve IQ, but how does it work?

But more important than just remembering information by rote is being able to do mental operations on that information – to solve a problem, to figure something out, or reason through something to find an answer. The ability to hold information in mind for brief periods, and manipulate it mentally is a type of short term memory called working memory. You have to do mental work on the information, not just store it. That is why it is called ‘working memory’.

The capacity of working memory

Most people have a working memory capacity of about 2 or 3 – much less than the memory span of the ‘magical number 7’ for just storing information without doing any cognitive operations on it.

People vary widely in their working memory capacity. İt is now known that these differences predict IQ level. General intelligence – measured by standardized IQ tests – depends on working memory because working memory affects a wide range of complex cognitive tasks besides figuring out a tip, involving reasoning problem solving, and making sense of things. We use working memory every single time we reason, plan and problem solve. Even comprehending long sentences (like the ones in this article) requires working memory!

Working memory and the intelligence behind our IQ level both share the same brain circuitry – part of the frontal cortex of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. (‘Dorsal’ means up, and ‘lateral’ means to the side – hence ‘dorsolateral’). This is one of the most recently evolved parts of the brain.

How to improve IQ – the logic

The logic is simple: If you can improve your working memory capacity by training it directly, you can therefore improve your intelligence level. There is, in technical terms, a ‘transfer effect’ from working memory training to gains in intelligence and IQ.

In 2008 cognitive psychologists at the University of Bern in Switzerland and the University of Michigan in the States, demonstrated that by training on a specifically designed working memory exercise you can increase working memory capacity by over 65% over just 19 days of training.

This improvement in this type of short term memory capacity had a remarkable side effect: a 40% gain in intelligence – as measured by a version of the time limited Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices IQ test – one of the most valid and highly regarded IQ tests for culture fair intelligence.

Most people continue this education until high school or college, and then stop in order to join the work force. On average it takes approximately eight seconds for a short term memory to get transferred into long term memory, and that requires eight seconds of focus and concentration. Most people do not spend that long on normal everyday events because life today is so busy and fast. They are constantly thinking about the next event or task, and do not spend the time required that it takes to process a memory.

There are many methods that you can use to improve your memory, including repetition to ingrain an event into your brain. If you meet a new person it may help you to remember their name if you repeat it a couple of times immediately upon hearing it, and also possibly trying to connect it to an event or memory from your past. If they look like someone you know, or their name is similar to another person, then you can use it to better remember it.

When trying to remember something as simple as a grocery list, repeat the items on the list several times in the car when driving to the store and you should find much better retention when you get there. There is something about repeating the words aloud that helps the memory become impressed into your long term memory. If that memory never gets into the long term section of your brain, then it can be difficult to remember simple events or tasks such as what you had for breakfast.

Relating a story or tale that is already in your long term memory to a new experience or event can also help cement it into your mind so that you will remember it. Improving your memory will take constant and daily changes in your life that may seem uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to them fairly quickly. Work it Baby!

The old adage “use it or lose it” is just as true for memory as in other areas. If you want to improve your memory, you need to give it a “work out” on a daily basis in order to have it available and at its best for you.

If you have been feeding your mind limiting thoughts about your memory, you might have convinced yourself that those limitations are real. You might have found other ways to compensate for what you believed about your memory, or you might have stopped depending on it altogether, and as a result are not giving your wonderful memory the practice it needs in order to stay in tip top shape. It’s time to take it back out of the box and start actively using it again. If you still have limiting beliefs about your memory running rampant, you might want to review Part 1 of this series.

As with starting any new practice or skill, when starting to improve your memory by reengaging it, start small. Remembering a shopping list of 4 items without writing them down is reasonable, trying to remember a shopping list of 40 items without writing them down or using a pneumonic is an unreasonable request on your memory, and is likely to defeat the purpose of putting you in touch with how wonderful your memory actually is.

It’s a good idea to take baby steps. Take a small step, then recognize your accomplishment. Take another small step, experience another small success. One of the best ways to improve memory is to experience and recognize a series of small victories, and build on each one. As you begin to appreciate your mind’s incredible genius potential, your memory will continue to become stronger and stronger, and serve you better and better.

It may not seem like much, but even small memory exercises, such as remembering lists or closing your eyes and remembering how many people around you on the train are wearing a certain color, can keep your memory muscle flexed and ready for action. The best way to improve your memory is to continuously use it.
