Article by Lynne Williams

Maybe your child isn’t doing well in school because he or she is eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) which really is sad! Maybe your own memory, alertness and concentration could use a boost, too. Try these tips for a few months and see your brain power improve.

The brain functions more effectively when the body is adequately hydrated. So, reach for a glass of cool water when you need to be alert. Ice-cold drinks disrupt digestion and impair the assimilation of nutrients by the body and should therefore be avoided. Avoid sugary, carbonated, caffeinated drinks which also interfere with the absorption of nutrients by the body.

Prepare foods that are fresh and free of pesticides. If you can’t get fresh, organic foods, try frozen foods. When you eat foods which are as close to their natural state as possible, they deliver the most potent nutrition. Avoid canned or preserved foods with artificial additives and preservatives or foods with artificial colors and flavors. These chemicals can build up and damage cells and brain function over time.

The brain is a heavy user of oxygen and it is particularly susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants are crucial for continued effective functioning of the brain. It is best to take your antioxidants the way nature intended-in foods, where they occur in a balanced form. Blueberries are a powerful brain food primarily because of their antioxidant properties. They have been shown to have the ability to improve memory and keep your brain “young.” They can also help you improve your balance and coordination. Research suggests that a diet rich in berries reduces, or even reverses, declining brain function. The acai berry from South America and the Indian gooseberry (amla) are wonderful for the brain but you may not have them stocked in your kitchen.

Other foods rich in antioxidants are broccoli, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, oranges, spinach, apricots, red and yellow peppers and sweet potatoes. Stick to bright colors when choosing fruits and vegetables. They have vitamins A and C which are linked to improving your memory and reasoning powers and keeping your arteries functioning properly. Eat several helpings of fruit and vegetables each day. Freshly squeezed fruit juices deliver nutrients quickly to your mind and body. Fruits are excellent cleansers-they flush toxins out of the body. Vegetables and fruits contain natural sugars which keep you alert. Your brain needs natural sugars to function at its best. Foods with the B vitamin folic acid (okra, spinach, lentils, collards, asparagus, black beans, Romaine lettuce, black-eyed peas, and sunflower seeds) prevent brain degeneration and keep your nervous system healthy.

Increase protein intake by using soy. Some of the powdered shake mixes are delicious!Your mother was right. Fish is brain food, too. Try a tuna salad or a tuna sandwich for lunch.

We’ve all been told to reduce our intake of fats. But, fat performs some essential functions in the body. Ghee (you can get it in the Indian Foods section of your supermarket or health food store) is valued for its ability to transport the beneficial components of herbs and spices to the brain and other parts of the body. Eat Ghee in moderation. Essential fatty acids are necessary for maximum brain power as well as promoting normal brain growth and development. They also help boost memory and your ability to learn new things. Integrate omega-3 fatty acids into the daily diet by eating fish, eggs, nut or seed oils and blue-green algae.

All nuts, particularly walnuts, are good for your brain because they keep your arteries clear and boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that controls sleep, depression, memory, and other neurological processes.

Include some dairy if you wish such as organic milk and fresh yogurt. Be sure to read the ingredients listed on the container so you avoid artificial ingredients.

What would life be without a little spice! Many spices enhance digestion and facilitate the clearing of toxins from the body. This means that the channels of the body, including those that serve the brain, will be clear. Black pepper in small quantities is particularly recommended for clearing the channels of the brain and promoting the free flow of oxygen to the brain. Did you ever try a little freshly ground black pepper on strawberries? It sounds awful but it TASTES wonderful! Other common spices which are good for the brain include: turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. The herb rosemary helps mental focus. Add some fresh or dried rosemary leaves to your cooking. If you have a rosemary plant, just pluck and sniff a few leaves. The magic is in the scent.

Benefits of Trying to Attract Success Using Subliminal MP3s : Subliminal MP3

Article by Arian David

Who would not desire to be successful? Everyone does from the lowest position in society to the highest in the land. Success is such a big word and embodies men’s deepest desires, hopes and dreams. But what is it really that drives man to search for it and work for it?

We are wonderful creations of God and we are here for a purpose. That may well be to live an abundant and prosperous life and glorifying God who equipped us with talents right from the beginning to be the best person we can be. Harnessing those potentials is an act of becoming – but it depends on us. We are endowed with a free will to make our choices of what we will be and how to be.

Success is defined as the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. So what is it we desire – wealth, eminence, harmony, peace, love? It does not have to be one or the other but may happen in its own time and in varying degrees. Living in a material world, people often equate success with material wealth to the exclusion of other life-affirming values like love of family, love of country, peaceful co-existence, harmonious cooperation and the like. But you and I know that wealth alone does not guarantee happiness and personal satisfaction.

We have in ourselves that creative energy that made it possible to explore nature’s provision for man’s interests. We also have men and women in our midst that in their brilliance, guided by a sense of purpose/direction, commitment to work, enthusiasm and perseverance, made great advances in science and technology. We are now in a highly computerized world and can reap the benefits it brings. For example, we can try to attract success using subliminal mp3s. We can aim to develop the above named qualities and more with the use of this devise.

Why can’t we just program ourselves to be achievers and not have to rely on trying to attract success using subliminal mp3s? Many self-directed individuals are open to new opportunities; they will likely see its benefits in its use. There are many, however, who needs the push to be success-oriented and stay on that course. There are indeed many lessons to be learned to achieve one’s purpose but due to fears, negativity and perceived limitations of abilities, the individual himself becomes the obstacle to attaining success.

Motivators or inspired individuals advise ‘to think about our purpose…and dream about it.‘ This is when trying to attract success using subliminal mp3s would surely be a great tool. It can imprint its messages to the brain when one is relaxed, out in the fields on a walk or going about one’s daily routine/tasks. As it works on a subconscious level, one is not aware of it but surely, changes would be evident, such as a rise in one’s level of energy in getting things done or in taking risks when one used to be overcautious. It may be coming home for dinner instead of being out with friends or stopping a bad habit by taking up a profitable and fun hobby.

The list is endless. It really depends on what good things you wish to bring into your life. What seems to be impossible to bring about before would now be within reach as one goes on receiving messages to change one’s life to what is desirable and what one desires. Indeed to attract success using subliminal mp3s is one big bargain that should not be missed.

In the last decade, photography has become an increasingly digitised medium. But while many have revelled in the convenience and high-quality photography that digital cameras have granted, others have lamented the loss of traditional photographic printing – claiming that many digital cameras are not built to provide long-lasting photographic memories. While these complaints hold some ground, developments on the internet over the past few years have meant that there is now an easy way to maintain the longevity of your photos: online photo sharing.

The burgeoning popularity of online photo-sharing sites has seen the emergence of many successful internet brands in the new generation of web 2.0 sites. Photo sharing sites have flourished as more and more people – both professional and amateur photographers – continue to post their work and invite comments, links and general debate about their photos.

Uploading your photos and sharing them online has a range of benefits. For starters, if it’s your child’s first birthday party and you’re keen to share the photos with family and friends across the world, you’ll be able to do so – both simply and affordably – by placing them on an online photo album. Sharing your photos in this way avoids the expense of having to post photos to multiple recipients by mail, and is far more convenient than emailing large photo files that can take a while to download. What’s more, using an online photo sharing site can also act as storage space for your photos, so you’ll be able to keep them for an indefinite amount of time without cluttering up your computer’s hard drive.

If you’re a budding professional photographer, placing your photos on an online photo sharing site can be a great way to get yourself noticed by your peers. Many photo sharing websites let users add tags to their photos, so that other members of the photo sharing community will be able to easily find and view photos on similar subjects or from the same geographic location.

Tagging photos that you’ve uploaded to a photo sharing site means your photos will have much better visibility, and will also be likely to generate more user comments and constructive criticism of your work. Search engine Yahoo!, for instance, have recently started incorporating photos of famous world landmarks into their search results.

Online photo sharing, therefore, has a variety of merits that can be enjoyed by a cross-section of web users. Whether you’re a developing photographer keen to share your work with the world, or you simply want to find an easy way for your grandmother to see photos of your new baby, online photo sharing is the answer for you!

Brain Training: Can it Improve Memory and Fend Off Alzheimer’s? : Brain Training

Article by Gene Millen

It may be time for some brain training.

A new survey indicates that Americans are more worried about Alzheimer’s disease than they are about having a heart attack.

And for good reason.

Alzheimer’s affects One in eight adults over 65. Those who are spared know they may end up with the burden of caring for a parent or a spouse who is affected.

Even though the number of older adults with dementias is rising rapidly, only a few drugs that have been approved to treat symptoms are on the market, and they slow down the disease but do not cure it.

Researchers, however, are more optimistic than ever about the potential of the aging brain, because recent evidence has challenged long-held beliefs by demonstrating that with brain training the brain can grow new nerve cells.

“For a long time, we held the assumption that we’re born with all the nerve cells we’re ever going to have, and that the brain is not capable of generating new ones — that once these cells die we’re unable to replace them,” said Molly V. Wagster, chief of the Neuropsychology of Aging branch of the National Institute on Aging. “Those assumptions have been challenged and put by the wayside.”

The birth of new nerve cells, she said, “has been shown to occur in the adult — not only in adult rats and monkeys, but also in older adult humans.” Most of the areas that show neurogenesis and that have been investigated so far are important for learning and memory, particularly the hippocampus, she added.

So how does one stimulate neurogenesis?

Studies of older people who have maintained their mental acuity provide some clues to brain training. They tend to be socially connected, with strong ties to relatives, friends and community. They are often both physically healthy and physically active. And they tend to be engaged in stimulating or intellectually challenging activities.

Some studies that have introduced older adults to brain exercise regimens have reported remarkable results. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recruited a group of sedentary adults between the ages of 60 and 75, assigning half of them to an aerobic exercise program that met three times a week to walk, while a control group did anaerobic stretching and toning.

The scientists measured the group’s cognitive function before and after the six-month program and found improvements among those who had done the walking.

“Six months of exercise will buy you a 15 to 20 percent improvement in memory, decision-making ability and attention,” said Arthur F. Kramer, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.

“It will also buy you increases in the volume of various brain regions in the prefrontal and temporal cortex, and more efficient neuronetworks that support the kind of cognition we examined.”

Other studies have found improvements in cognitive function after a combined regimen of physical exercise and cognitive training.

Regular physical activity may improve brain function, both by increasing blood flow to the brain and stimulating the production of hormones and nerve growth factors involved in neurogenesis.

Animal studies have found that physically active animals have better memories and more cells in their hippocampus. Exercise also plays a role in countering diseases like Type 2 diabetes, which increases the risk of dementia.

Seeking out stimulation through interesting work, volunteer opportunities or continuing education is beneficial. Travel, read, take up a new language or learn to play a musical instrument. Staying socially connected is also associated with brain health, as is managing stress effectively.

One of the most enjoyable brain training methods is by playing scientific brain games.

Do they work? Some just don’t live up their advertising but I’ve found a couple of brain training games that have the research studies to back them up, won’t cost you an arm or a leg…and just may change your brain for the better.

Natural Ways to Reduce Memory Loss and Improve Your Memory Skills : Memory Exercises

Article by Valerie Balandra

Do you occasionally have one of those “senior moments” where you walk into a room and then totally blank out on why you went in there, or scramble mentally to remember the name of a person to whom you were just introduced? These small memory lapses happen to everyone – they are simply part of the brain’s constant efforts to sort out, prioritize and file away the information it is constantly receiving.

Minor forgetfulness is a normal part of getting older and generally does not affect your life in any significant way. On the other hand, if lapses in memory start to get in the way of your ability to function normally, there may be some cause for concern. Getting lost in a familiar place or repeating the same sentence several times in a single conversation should raise a red flag signaling that there may be a more serious problem.

However, if you believe you are experiencing significant memory loss, you should not automatically assume that you are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Memory is a complex process involving many different areas of the brain, and there are many different causes of memory loss. Most of these are treatable, and even reversible. It is important to remember that in large part, maintaining healthy brain function is under your own control.

Memory loss can be caused by any of the following conditions:

* Stress, Depression, AnxietyThese common psychological disorders may damage the neural pathways in the affected areas of the brain, leading to confusion and a decreased ability to concentrate.

* Stroke Stroke can cause damage to many different areas of the brain, affecting the ability to process and recall memories.

* Head InjuriesConcussion and other head injuries can cause temporary memory loss.

* Impaired Thyroid FunctionHypo- and hyperthyroidism create hormonal imbalances which may affect memory.

* MedicationsCertain medications can cause dementia-like symptoms. Even some topical analgesics used for arthritis pain can cause memory lapses if the liver is not functioning properly and cannot flush these chemicals out of the body quickly enough.

* Environmental ToxinsCarbon monoxide, heavy metals such as lead and mercury, pesticides, and even the chemicals in certain hobby items can interfere with memory and concentration.

* MenopauseThe hormonal changes which occur during menopause can create temporary disconnects in memory recall.

* Dietary DeficienciesInsufficient levels of the vitamins B1 and B12 may impair cognitive ability.

* Excessive Alcohol Consumption and Drug UseAlcohol and recreational drugs deplete vitamin B1 levels, affecting cognition and memory.

* Natural AgingAging can cause brain function to slow down somewhat. Simply taking a bit longer to call up a memory may be misinterpreted as memory loss.

* Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)MCI may be diagnosed when memory loss moves beyond minor gaffs to more significant lapses like forgetting the names of your grandkids or getting lost in a familiar location. MCI can be a precursor of Azheimer’s disease, but it does not always lead to dementia. While it can be frightening and sometimes disruptive, most seniors with MCI are able to live more-or-less normal lives.

* Alzheimer’s DiseaseAD is the most common form of dementia. It is degenerative disease caused by the formation of protein deposits in the brain.

* Other Types of DementiaSenile dementia can have numerous causes, but the results are generally similar. Patients tend to display inappropriate social behavior, emotional disturbance, loss of communication skills, and a deteriorating ability to make judgments. Dementia can result from vascular blockages, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease.

Now for the good news. Amidst all these threats to long-term mental agility, there are plenty of things you can do to improve your cognition and retain your memory skills into your later years. The benefits of these exercises are enormous, both for your mental and your physical well-being.

* DetoxA detoxification program is highly effective in flushing toxins from the body and improving liver function, ensuring that the body can continue to cleanse itself of harmful chemicals.

* Memory exercises – crossword puzzles, Sudoku, reading, writing, and specifically designed memory games all help to keep neural pathways humming along.

* Exercise is vital for a healthy mind and body. Regular physical activity improves blood flow to the brain and reduces the risk of memory loss.

* Diets rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh organic fruits and vegetables give you the nutrients you need while avoiding toxins from pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

* Memory supplements are very useful in enhancing memory, even reversing memory loss in many cases. Some effective memory supplements:

– Gingko Biloba;- Ginseng;- Acetyl-L-carnitine;- Omega-3 fatty acids;- Vinpocetine, from the periwinkle plant;- Huperzine A (Chinese club moss);- Phosphatyl choline, found in egg yolks and soy;- Pirecetam, a synthetic memory enhancer.

By taking control now, you are giving yourself every chance at a healthy, fulfilling life. No matter what your age, you will benefit from some simple lifestyle choices and memory enhancing techniques.

Quality Food for Mental Performance : Brain Foods

Article by Carole Gayle

There are foods that definitely nourish the brain and then there are foods that can actually negatively affect brain capability. Do you understand which promote a strong brain and which do not? The following is a list of foods to help you in seeking out positive foods to sharpen concentration, sharpen memory and possibly ward off brain aging – among a great many other health advantages.

The food categories are listed by proteins, carbs and fats and oils. In each grouping we’re going to check out the most important foods and the worst foods. As well, we will check out the most important foods with respect to detox busting attributes. Antioxidants reduce the effects of toxins that can harm the brain. Think about anti-oxidants as the guardian of your brain. Antioxidants defend against the result of toxins by either busting the toxins into benign particles or by keeping toxins from targeting healthy cellular material.

When eating with the brain in mind, make sure you load your eating plan with items from the “Best” section and avoid food outlined as undesirable for brain efficiency.

ProteinsEggs, beans, protein powders and cottage cheese are quality proteins that nourish the brain. Cold-water fish like salmon and sardines are quality brain food. But, there is an imperative word related to consuming sea food. Virtually all fish come with traces of mercury. The fish detailed in this article are looked at as “low-mercury” fish. Tuna is also a great brain-food fish, although it can have increased amounts of mercury. The Food and Drug Administration advises that young children eat at the most 2 low-mercury sea food servings per week.

Processed meats, lamb and other fish don’t have the value that the previously outlined proteins have but are still good for the brain. What you want to stay away from are red meats, pork and other fatty meats, processed and deli meats. These proteins do not assist brain power.

CarbsYou can find a variety of quality fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans that supply nutrients to the brain, while also providing antioxidant defense. The following are the best foods in the carb department;- Fruits: apples, berries, raisins, plums, grapes- Vegetables: spinach, kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cilantro, parsley, bell peppers, basil, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes and yams, tomato- Whole grains: barley, brown rice, oats and oatmeal- Dark beans

Foods made with refined sugars and refined flours do more harm compared to good. Unfortunately, a lot of foods on the grocer’s shelves are made out of processed sugar and processed flour. Always try for whole-grain foods as a substitute and your mind will certainly thank you.

Fats and OilsFats have obtained a bad rep however the healthy fats and oils, in particular olive and flax oil, are quality for the brain. So are walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and peanuts. Saturated and trans fats are unhealthy for the brain and the entire body, though these are the fats you find in most refined foods. Corn oil, vegetable oil and other processed cooking oils are not beneficial for the brain either.

Brain-Boosting Antioxidant FoodsRead the list of high antioxidant foods and pick out the foods you will most likely enjoy on a daily basis. A few of these food items have already been outlined, but function in a dual purpose for the brain. You need to put these foods on your grocery list but don’t stop there. Return back to the list and pick foods that you might not eat every day but that you might not mind adding to your eating plan. Check out recipes via the internet that can include those foods. Variety is key simply because each of these foods creates their distinct combination of nutritional value.

Vegetables: Red vegetables including beets, red onion and red cabbage, broccoli, garlic, kale, sweet potato, cilantro, parsley, bell peppers and chili peppers, artichoke, brussels sprouts

Fruits: All types of berries, pomegranate, avocado, apples (especially dark-skinned apples), dark-skinned grapes, prunes, plums, citrus fruits, kiwi, pineapple

Nuts, Seeds and Beans: Broad beans, soy, red and black beans, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, flax seed, sesame seed, sunflower seeds

Cereals: Millet, barley, oats

Spices and herbs: Cinnamon, cloves, oregano, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, curry, sage, basil

Try to integrate as many of the foods outlined in this area into your daily diet regime. These foods are especially good for brain efficiency.

To complete this How-To you will need: Oatmeal Salmon Nuts Eggs Folate-rich foods Berries Dark chocolate Milk (optional) Bananas (optional) Step 1: Give them oatmeal Serve a hot cereal for breakfast. Children who ate instant oatmeal performed 5 to 12 percent better on spatial memory tests than kids who ate sugary cereal or no breakfast at all. Tip: Make the cereal with milk — protein staves off hunger, which increases concentration. Step 2: Serve salmon Replace tuna sandwiches with salmon. Tuna is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain growth and function, but salmon has even more. Studies have suggested that children whose diet is high in essential fatty acids do better on reading and spelling tests. Step 3: Go nuts Let them snack on unsalted nuts. Like salmon, they’re high in essential fatty acids, among other brain-boosting nutrients. Cashews are particularly good for developing minds; they’re rich in magnesium, which may improve blood flow to the brain. Step 4: Whip up some eggs Whip up some eggs; they’re loaded with choline, a B vitamin that

As technology rapidly develops, we depend on it more and more to make our lives easier. But does it? With easy access to information readily available to us via our computers, cell phones, and television—all sources that have all-inclusive storage and memory capacities—do we depend on these sources so much that we have lost our own ability to store and recall information?

Fortunately, leading memorization techniques can help us with spontaneous recollection without depending on technology. These techniques improve memory through natural methods. We no longer need to worry about forgetting birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, or other important dates, not to mention the ramifications!

Not long ago, it was believed that adults stopped growing brain cells. In fact, it was all we could do to keep from destroying the ones we had. Any trauma to the head could put us at serious risk of destroying our existing neurons.

Now, we know that this isn’t the case. Research shows that new cells develop in the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain in which we store memories. Every day, we grow thousands of new brain cells. There is, however, one catch: only those of us who participate in active learning get to keep them.

Memorization techniques typically rely on three methods to improve memory, including:

1. Visualization methods which help you store symbolic information. Photographic memories can easily recall details using pictures.

2. Storytelling, which includes creating stories that help us recall difficult information. Using stories engages the brain, thus enhancing memory.

3. Repetition, which can help with the memorization of numerical data as well as other types of information.

Think of these memorization techniques as a workout for your brain. By devoting a short amount of time for memorization, you will experience a new level of enhanced memory function.

Remember the old adage, “Use it or lose it”? Our brains are actually muscles that are composed of two elements; gray matter and white matter. The gray matter is composed of cell bodies of the nerve cells, and the white is composed of the axons that transmit nerve signals to the other neurons.

Muscles do, in fact, have memory, and the more we actively use our brains, the stronger we will be. In fact, our potential as human beings is unlimited.

This is an important discovery, because while scientists have known for some time that mental agility prevents senility and dementia, it is only now that they have begun to discover why.

With this recent discovery, we embark on a new era, with a bevy of research and technology in a wide range of disciplines directly tied in to the fields of neuroscience and psychology, in particularly sciences, social sciences, and engineering.

Scientists now have the opportunity to further the dialogue that aims to gain a better understanding of the human condition through the study of the mind. What they are now learning about the brain is teaching us how to resolve issues that range from sleep deprivation to mental illness to memory loss, and with this knowledge we are able to fight dementia, improve sleep, improve overall health, and increase memory and intelligence.

Brain Training Online : Brain Training

Article by Jeffery Gwin

Adrian Owen of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit and his colleagues first measured participants’ baseline performance on a battery of freely available ‘benchmark’ tests. Included were measures of reasoning, verbal short-term memory, spatial working memory and paired-associates learning (a test of longer-term verbal memory).

The participants, who had an average age of 39, then formed three groups. The first group spent six weeks, for a minimum of ten minutes a day, three times a week, performing computerised training tasks in reasoning, planning and problem solving. The second group spent the same time training on a broader range of tests of short-term memory, attention, visuospatial processing and mathematics, similar to those found in commercial brain training products. For both brain training groups, the tasks increased in difficulty in line with any gains in participant performance. The final, control group spent the same time using the internet to find answers to obscure quiz questions.

Participants in all groups showed improvements on the specific tasks included in their training regimens, but a repeat of the benchmark performance tests used at the study outset showed that these benefits had not generalised, not even when the training tests and benchmark tests involved similar cognitive processes.

The vanishingly modest transferable benefits of brain training that were observed, were no greater than those found in the control group after they’d spent time Googling the answers to obscure general knowledge questions. To take one example, consider changes to the number of digits participants could hold in memory. At the study end, the control group participants could remember, on average, two-tenths of a digit more than they could at the study outset. What about participants in the second brain training group? Their digit memory increased, on average, by a mere three-hundreths of a digit – actually less than the control group.

‘These results provide no evidence for any generalised improvements in cognitive function following brain training in a large sample of healthy adults,’ the researchers said.

What about the possibility that the training regimens in the current study weren’t long enough to generate transferable benefits? This seems unlikely because there was a negligible link between the number of training sessions completed and the amount of observed transferable benefit. ‘That said,’ the researchers admitted, ‘the possibility that an even more extensive training regime may have eventually produced an effect cannot be excluded’.

The results of this study will be shared and discussed on Bang Goes The Theory on BBC One at 9pm on 21 April and on the BBC’s Lab UK website.

The new findings are just the latest to cast doubt on the value of commercial brain training products. A 2008 investigation by the consumer charity Which? concluded that ‘none of the claims [of commercial brain training products] are supported by peer-reviewed research published in a recognised scientific journal and involving the specific product’. The Which? investigators, Adrian Owen among them, recommended a healthy diet, physical exercise and challenging mental activities, including learning a new instrument or language, or completing crosswords, as the most effective ways to maintain a healthy mind.
